Looking over in the HERO forum someone has found out away to modify the phone.apk to include a roam only option. Wondering if this was possible for the evo as well. I tried using the apktool but the files do not match.
Heres the link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=745092
I'm sure it's possible. If I remember correctly when I was using CyanogenMod Nightlies, there was an option for this (it wasn't call roam only but im sure thats what it did).
Yeah this is where all of this started.... Now someone has ported it to the hero and I would really like to see if this is possible for the hero.
Why would you want to force Roam only?

I know I would. I used to do it on my Pre while I was at work.. I work in radio and in the lower level of our building in production studios all day and my signal is very weak. Forcing the phone into roam helped me have better battery life, and a more stable phone if I got a call or something.
Roam only on the Evo would be very nice!

This is the same reason why I need it..... I used it on my pre all the time as well when at work and in other areas where coverage was very spotty
I have the phone.apk (from Fresh 3.1.01) decompiled and I have made the noted changes from the original Hero thread and I'm ready to test, but I'm having fits on compileing the apk to sign and test. Can someone else try, the modifications are simple to edit.

I am not running Fresh.... Wish I knew a little more about programing. I tried the apktool mentioned in the post but the rom I use has a different dialer setup than fresh's. I wonder if he would be willing to help.
I would love to have this option in a widget, shortcut, or some other method that makes it easy to toggle on and off. There were registry edits on my old HTC WinMo phones to enable this.
I have very good Sprint coverage most of the time but every once in a while I'm somewhere Verizon has better coverage. I've seen my phone hold onto Sprint with one or even no bars, and only switch to Verizon every once in a while and get full bars. This kills the battery and of course service.
Could someone post the original stock 2.2 phone.apk (unthemed). I think that the themeing on the dialer is what is causing my issues with rebuilding the .apk. This could cause issues with the htc framework used, just my .02. We should be able to port this over.
I modded the apk for Fresh 3.1.0.1, try it out and let me know if it works:

Unfortunately I keep getting FC's after moving this one over the old one. Rebooted the phone and still no luck. I feel like something is different with the framework or something. Could theme changes (Rosie) in this ROM be the issue? What did you do to rebuild the apk. I worked a few hrs after I moded it from your instructions trying to rebuild using APKmanger. I greatly appreciate your efforts. Trial and error, we'll get there with the EVO!!! Thanks!
I would love this app also

U dont get charged for roaming it just comes out of your anytime minutes if you do not have an unlimited plan. If u have unlimited then it costs nothing
Any one have any progress to report on this
One thing that may work: load CM6, set it to affiliated networks, then restore back to your previous ROM.
It may not work, but I know on my N1, if I would set it to WCDMA only to prevent the 3G dropping to EDGE, then that would stay sticky over flashes & wipes etc.
The settings are stored in the radio, so I think setting it to roam only should stick.

Sprint doesn't charge for domestic voice or data roaming. They reserve the right to cancel your account if you roam for more than half your minutes or a specific amount of data (I can't remember how much), so it's not the kind of thing you'd leave on all the time. But there are situations where it would be beneficial to force roaming for a short period of time.
i'd def be interested in this. im using fresh.

I have a rooted phone. Im going to the Daytona 500 this weekend and thought it would be cool to listen to the drivers and such. When I try to download the app from texting NASCAR to 7777 it says I dont have a compatible phone. I suspect due to the root.
Anyone have this app I can download and throw on.

The app worked great today. It allows me to listen to drivers and team chatter from the different cars.
Its a great app for Nascar fans, albeit, Im not a huge fan. But being at the Daytona 500 and being able to listen to the teams is fun. Its was a great race.
Thanks!

No, it doesn't work or at least it is extremely buggy.
The app is sort of a portal for NASCAR news and also provides telemetry, scoring and audio feeds on race day. Its actually a great app if you're in to NASCAR (which I am) but its basically un-usable on android. It was slow on my blackberry but at least everything worked.
When I used it on my hero, the backlight would time out and the app would not update data. Also, it was just plain buggy with some screens not even loading.
I wish they would fix these issues.
Wow! I just upgraded to dc 2.1 and downloaded the Sprint cup mobile app and its running like a top. So fast and everything seems to work so far. Most functionality doesn't kick in until the race starts so i'll report back later but so far I'm just blown away. This is the way stuff is supposed to work!
I just wanted to follow up: the audio did not work during the race yesterday. No audio, no options, no nothing. Everything else I tested worked fine except there is no keep-alive option and the leaderboard is a little flakey when the phone wakes up. The audio may have been a Sprint problem. They are just as flakey as their software. Have to try again next week at Martinsville.

Probably not. I'm guessing that data must pass through a Sprint proxy to prevent that. That's just speculation, though.
Yeah
Yeah it installs fine...but wont even run before sayin im not sprint or nextel. This is friggin stupid id pay sprint to use it. VZ had this app for years until Winston gave up the NASCAR sponsorship
Any clue what may be wrong with that apk thedudejdog? I have installed many apks and never had an issue. I install this NASCAR and it installs...but when I open it, the app just stays on the main screen and says its loading for 3 minutes or so...then it reboots my phone.
Any help?
Well if your not on Sprint it wont work. That's the issue some of us want fixed.
Swap a couple words, and that title could be a Viagra commercial
Anyways, looking at the changes we made to reconnect to 4G faster, these values should make us connect sooner, and drop the connection later. Should be good for fringe areas. I'll describe every change and explain what they do, so bear with me:
NOTE: All these changes will be made in the EPST menu. To get there, dial ##DATA# and choose edit mode. You'll have to enter your MSL. Then choose WiMax in the menu. Don't change anything except what I tell you, because you'll eff something up most likely. If this doesn't work for you, I've also mentioned the defaults so you can go back.
WiMAX_Entry_RX(RSSI)(dBm) - Default is -89. This is the minimum signal it has to be picking up to connect. I'm not sure what the best value here is, but the lower the number, the quicker the connect, since it will connect to a weaker signal. You'll have to experiment some with this, I recommend trying about -95 to -100 first. If it's unstable, raise the value closer to -89.
WiMAX_Entry_CINR(dB) - Default is 4. This is the Carrier to Interface Noise Ratio. The higher it is, the clearer the connection has to be to connect. Change it to 3. You may be able to push it all the way down to 2, but that is probably pushing it. EDIT: Sorry, didn't realize you couldn't set this without it being 4 or higher. You can still pick it up with a weaker signal by changing the entry RSSI, but you still have to have a signal without much interference. In reality, that shouldn't matter too much though
WiMAX_Exit_CINR(dB) - Default is 2. See the entry CINR value for an explanation of it. If the signal degrades to a CINR of 2, it will drop the connection. Change this to 1. This should let you stay connected longer. If you run into problems with staying connected but having an unreliable connection, change it back to 2.
WiMAX_Exit_Delay(s) - The default is 2. Since it's measured in seconds, that means if the CINR drops to 2 or below for 2 seconds, it will drop the connection. Raise it to 5. That should be enough to cover just a random drop in signal that will pick back up right away. That way you don't drop connection if you drive under a bridge or something (I'm rocking mine at 15s here, but it'll take any value up to 600 seconds, which is 10 minutes!)
That should be it. I think I explained everything good enough. Let me know if you have any questions & I'll edit the OP. None of these should harm your device, but as usual heres the disclaimer: If you screw up and blame me, I will point and laugh.
I'm not in 4G ATM so I can't test it, but all the principles check out in theory. The only one that cause any 4G instability (ie having signal but not being able to transfer data) is the exit CINR. A value of 1 may be too low to transfer data, but I'm not sure. If you have that issue, just raise it back to 2. The rest will just make it pick up signal sooner.
Let me know how it works
EDIT: Also, if you follow this guide it'll let you reconnect sooner if you for some reason disconnect randomly. Plus it'll let you connect as soon as it picks up signal too, not 5 minutes after you first pick it up!
I've had people report to me on Twitter that this DRASTICALLY improves things for them. @cynicaloptimist said he used to get 4G a half mile from is house, and now he can get it 150 feet away. It may not seem like a lot, but a half mile more coverage is a helluva lot more when a tower (4G towers may vary, CDMA/EvDo figures here) may cover 10-12 miles.
Great work man, i just wish i could use it. Damn you Sprint for not having 4G in Long Island New York yet! All the hype for this phone and its flagship feature, 4G when you buy it and you find out, you cant even use it... smh.
That works great! Also, has anyone found out why it keeps searching for 4G when we turn it off? ALL evos are affected. Do a Logcat after you turn 4g off and watch it go crazy every 2 seconds. I think this issue has been seriously overlooked.

Yeah I've noticed that but I have no idea what may be causing it. I'll look into it, but the gist of it is, it seems to be looking for the 4G daemon running on the device, but it's been shut down already. Could be wrong tho.

The acceptable range of values for the Evo is 4-10. The Evo just wont let me set it lower.
This was just what I was looking for, screwed up my epst.apk though so I hope I can just swap it back in with adb.
the "WiMAX_Entry_CINR(dB)" does not allow me to enter a value of 3. It says it's restricted values are between 4 - 10.
Edit: pwabbit also posted it. I guess I can confirm that he's not the only one unable to change that value.

Run logcat while inputing the code. You will likely see msgs that indicate the phone is trying to load a number of java classes and a reason for the failure. When I had this problem it was because I had a corrupted hosts file and the phone was failing to resolve th name localhost which is the name used to call the java classes needed to load the tool.

Awesome speeds. The network has just been live here in STL for about a month, started off never breaking 2.5Mbps. Now they've improved it quite a bit coverage wise & I get ~5mbps going 75MPH down I-55. I imagine it'd be better stationary.
And thats really weird. What ROM are you running? Are you using the stock HTC dialer? It should definitely be ##data# unless you're not on the HTC dialer. AAMOF it won't even let you enter the second one, as soon as you type the first it goes straight into EPST.

Yeah crazy speeds, i took a dump on myself when i hit that marker. I also have a head set plugged in with it snipped to half a inch of wire. For some odd reason i broke the barrier. With it plugged in. I think the 4g antenna is a small one compaired to the usb one. Iam using damage control 3.2.3 with the toast fps kernel and stock dialer. Great battery with dc profile set to performance and underclocked to 806 using the juice control not setcpu. When u got dc set to performance means its allowing more threads in the cpu not making it set to a full load. Just sayin.

Make a copy of the backed up unmodded one somewhere where you can easily go move it back. Then make a nandroid backup just in case .
Here's how I've done it. Probably a better way, but it's worked for me. Make sure the modded apk is renamed to exactly what the existing one is "SystemUI.apk". Using Root Explorer, move the modded apk anywhere NOT on the SD Card - like the root internal memory, for example. In Root Explorer, keep moving up a level until you see the system, sdcard, etc. folders: then move it here, but not in a particular folder yet (this will allow you to change the permissions). Change the permissions to rw-r-r (check the first two boxes on the first line, and the first box on the next two lines). Make sure it says "permissions changed successfully". Move the apk to system/app, override the prompt to replace the existing one. Your status bar will disappear. Turn off the device, then back on. You should see your changes.
Works great. But only one problem. My statusbar dissapered for ever. Y reatarted and its still gone. I only modded the pics.

[Q]Changing Signal Icons?
Sorry to bring this thread back to life, but I didn't know where else to put it and didn't want to start a new thread.
I was wondering if someone could make a flashable (CWM) .zip where GPRS shows G, EDGE shows E, UMTS shows 3G, HSDPA shows 3G+, and HSPA+ shows 4G? I know you can see the network you're connected to under About Phone/Network, but I'm tired of AT&T's 4G gimmick and would rather see what network I'm actually connected too.
I tried searching around, even got into the APK Manager thread and everything to try to mod the icons myself but was pretty unsuccessful since editing XML's got pretty complicated. So, as much as I didn't want to, it's time to admit how noob I am.
I have the icon images I'd like to use already, so if anyone could help me out that'd be great.

Attached should be what you're looking for. It comes from Virtuous Unity's SystemUI.apk, so might only work with Sense 3.0 ROMs? Or maybe only Virtuous Unity? Maybe someone else will be able to better specify. Either way, I still recommend you do a backup before installing. But it has E for EDGE, 3G for UMTS, 3G+ for HSDPA, and 4G for HSPA+. I've attached just the SystemUI.apk (has 5 bar signal strength mod as well, let me know if you want 4 bar) as well as a flashable Clockwork .zip that has Digital % battery and 5 bar signal strength mods (If you don't want the Digital% mod just delete the "framework" folder from the .zip and then flash). Awesome thanks. I'm actually already running VU (pretty unfortunate that they had to put the project on hold with everything thats going on with them), so even better =]
(to Simba) Correct me if I'm wrong, (I haven't actually tried this so I can't say for sure) but I wanted to keep the regular 3G (for UMTS) and 4G icons I have set up right now. I thought replacing the 3G icon with 3G+ would change the icons both for UMTS and HSDPA to 3G+, which isn't what I'm aiming for either.
[EDIT] The attachment didn't work. HSDPA is still showing 3G. I haven't checked UMTS yet, but I'm going to assume that it's showing 3G too. But yes, the icon pack I wanted to use is in the VU 1.29 SystemUI.apk, I just can't figure out how to make HSDPA show 3G+.
done.
Hey glad to see you back man .
I'll try it out later tonight since i'm already using Miui and see if MMS is working. One question though, does it have Sparksco script in it?
Yes sir! Its always great to have you back around. Ill play with miui more when I get off work tonight

Does not include GAPPS.
There are enough versions out there for you to download so no need for me to post any extras.

I was and have always been under the impression that MIUI didn't require GApps..? The ability to log into a Google account is built-in, and the ROM comes with Gmail.
I have noticed that Jeff stopped updating the ROM on MIUI.us. I can continue updating the ROM there if needed, but I'd rather have someone else take it over since I have recently left Sprint and their crappy data speeds.

I have sprint until next month but I have no way of testing. I'm rocking the OG Razr powered by Sprint on the NOW network haha. I'll keep this up to date for you and the community.

No need! I have not stopped, just waiting for a stable ICS build to port instead. There have been minor changes that don't really effect us, so I haven't been porting weekly.
So I'm going to apologize for the stupid question ahead of time, I promise I'm usually not this slow on Mondays. But quick question.. I have a 3G symbol (I think I understand the meaning of that), a signal bar with a E, and a signal bar with a 1X.....
What are all the signal bars for?

1x is not 3g..what you get when 3g is not available..like sending msgs and phone calls..
if im not wrong...e represents edge and h is hspda
It is that way because China made a lot of changes go the cdma code. Everything works besides how the signal is shown

edit - from: http://miuiandroid.com/2012/01/miui-rom-no-release-this-week/
Hi everyone,
Should of probably mentioned this earlier in the week but i’ve been exceptionally busy with work.
Due to the new year in China there will be no development ROM this week for MIUI. Normal development will resume in the coming days following from the weekend.
Please dont spam the comments with ‘Please port my phone’ type questions or otherwise. They will be deleted.
We hope everyone has a great weekend and we’ll be back in next week with a nice new update and hopefully some more exciting news on ICS and other developments we’ve been aware of by Xiaomi.
Thanks,
Mark

this one might not lol i dont have a phone to test it so just doin what i always do...if youre free tonight around 9pm eastern time come to irc.freenode.net rom #devclass im going over porting..grab the latest miui from desire z and then the one from jefftet and ill show you what to do
The first issue I found with it is... the data connction, it won't pick up any connection unless on wifi, second when I make a phone call I can not hear anything and the person I call can't hear me either... otherwise from that it is really awesome and smooth..

Anyone know of any mods to show an "LTE" symbol instead of the "4G" sign?
it can be done but its not simple. it requires moddifying framework files.
Are their any xposed modules like gravity box that will work with the oneplus one?
Could also do it from modifying the SystemUI.apk

Although I do have to warn that.... when you apply a CM theme, it resets it back to 4G and the "LTE" will only stick when using the stock theme because they have their own _4g and _lte pictures. Unless you modify the .apk to change images of _4g to _lte
The other way doing this is to modify how Android scans _4g and _lte and change it.
DISREGARD APP HASN'T BEEN UPDATED IN A FEW YEARS.
Looking around I ran into the video below but not sure if it'll work for OnePlus One though, if anybody is willing to attempt. App is called NinjaMorph FREE but there's also NinjaMorph Pro paid version which is $4.99.

Considering the app Ninjamorph hasn't been updated since 2010,2011 I would strongly advise not doing this.

Yeah it probably wouldn't be any good for Kit Kat. The workaround I listed above works, by modifying the SystemUI.apk with the 2 files, it'll work.
But if you apply a theme, you'll need to modify the apk to do the changes for _4g to _lte as well.
The only other way around it is to modify the rom on how it correlates our signal to "4g" instead of the "lte" status bar. I wish that CM stuck with "LTE" instead of "4G" but to me it really doesnt matter and is just cosmetics.

I definitely agree with you on that. Maybe if we send feedback next OTA update will include LTE =)
The Gravity box xposed module will swap from LTE/4G. I'm not sure if it works on cm11s though since I'm running cm nightlies which already have LTE. Maybe someone could try it out on the stock ROM.

Or at least a option to swap the two if the user wants to swap it. I get told "wah your phone doesn't get LTE?!" when in actuality it does but everybody is so used to seeing "LTE" instead of "4G" when in reality, LTE is 4G but marketed differently.

That would be a great suggestion to be able to swap between the two. I bet it's the iphone fanboys that tell you that lol HATERS.
