so i have been hiding on various places reading up on and installing roms on my touch pro 2. as of the last 5 roms some part of all of them functions incorrectly or locks up, or just generally doesn't work. now i have a hard time believing all these roms have problems. some of these have been very popular and stable roms like mighty and energy. my device has been properly unlocked. right now im using a rom called Gdub i think it is and although no big deal im unable to change wallpapers nor will my computer connect ( im thinking that problem is unrelated and might be my computer) now, one thing i have done ever time has been use pim backup for my contacts but i cant understand how that would mess anything up. the only other thing i can find on this issue is someone said the device might not be completely writing over the data before and causing issues. i have searched all i can but not sure exactly what to search for. and ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Really, you have to give people a little more time to respond.
I would also suggest a Task 29 before flashes. More importantly however may be your PIM backup. Are you restoring backed up reg settings when you do PIM backup? If so, that is your problem.

I personally dont use PIM backup.. i either sync it with my comp or use Microsoft My Phone App... but some people have issue with keeping their stuff in the cloud.. but definetly if using PIM backup make sure that reg entries are not being transfered.. even then Task29 will not help you.

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone know a good OS backup software for wm6, I have always used spb backup with wm5 faria's but now that i'm on explorer 1.1 I notice whenever I try to backup i always have error logs and when I restore the file the os run slows as ever, I really dont' think spb backup is very compatible with wm6, and yes I have the newest version too. Any suggestions? or anyone that use a different soft and doesn't run into any problem with restoring in wm6 I would like to know your input, thanxs.
I personally use Sprite, but I just acquired SK Tools and I haven't used the built-in backup utility yet. My restorations are not laggy, but I do get a few errors.
I'm not really sure that there's a utility built for any WM6 devices at this point, so you may want to hold off until an updated utility is offered and make your decision then.
Normally i'm using spb backup 1.5.5. But everytime I make a backup an error is reported. When restoring this backup no problems occure. So it should be a slip the program or so. I also used Sunny Soft backupmanager 4.0. This isn't giving any problems or errors, the only thing is it makes three restore files in stead of one restore file of spb.
So I'm back to spb, it still works great even with an error report.

Do a google search for that error and you'll find a registry fix to correct it. Something about couldn't lock compimeh.dat or something similar I'll bet. Has to do with WM6, but it isn't anything vital to worry about (as I understand it). Just frustrating if you want to do nightly automatic backups.
I´m using SKTools and did a backup two times - on NotTooSmart vanilla and Xplore 1.1.
Everytime after backup I coudn´t run any message Program. No SMS, no Email, nothing. Just when I hit message in Start - Programs the wizard goes back to today. So I stoped making backups.
SOmetime I had problems to get ActiveSnc connecting after backup.
So just keep on reinstalling everything. Clean - Fast - und everytime some new apps.

I'd be curious on why you order them this way. What reasons do you feel make one better than the other?
I'm not questioning your order, I'm just curious why SunnySoft's is your number one (I've never used it so would like to know if I'm missing something).
curious why no one has metionen PIM BACKUP?---->1.5

Yes thats right. I said I stoped using backup - that´s not right. I use PIM-Backup.
But there for you have to install everything after hardreset. Some people prefer just restore after a hardreset. For me I always had problems with fullbackup - so I only use PIM backup.

Because Sunnysoft is the ONLY ONE, that has never failed on me.
After every HR (e.g. after flash, but only when reloading a backup is apppropriate), I use all 4 programs for test purposes.
Just a hobby, ain't it ?

I use restoring by PIM backup, when I did a hardreset without able to sync to my PC. When I´m home again, I sync just from PC to device and say "delete on device" So I do not have dublikates.

I think obsession is the word I'd use for myself...
I have multiple tilts, and want to make them all the same... is there a way that after I've got one working the way I want it to quickly duplicate/copy everything to another tilt?
I've looked at the kitchen stuff, but need a good walk thru to make heads or tails,,,
I basically am taking someones already cooked ROM, then modifying it and adding the CABS I want, and the config settings I want for the phone. I am also changing start menu layout to my liking.
thanks in advance!

I did a search and can't find an easy answer to this. Anyone have a suggestion?
you can use sprite backup and then do a "upgrade" restore to get most of your stuff on the other tilts. will need to reconfigure email though. please read the help and faq at Sprite's website before you do it.
You want aprogram called SPB Kiosk. I'ts not cheap, but I did some beta testing for them & can probably send you a test copy that's fully functioning. PM me if u want.
why do you need multiple tilts? not to be a smart ass but just dont see the logic. in regard to your question why not install the same rom/radio on each and load your preferred cab files on an sd card and just load them up. its a bit tedious however it shouldnt exactly be brain surgery. plus use pim backup so each phone can have same contacts etc...
Probably b/c like me they are for family &/or business use.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the suggestions so far are to backup the programs and settings but not the ROM. Am I confused?
What you are looking for is something like Sprite Clone (but it aint cheap).

Spb Backup does a complete backup and restore of everything you have installed, all PIM data, and all Register settings, but doesn't install the ROM. I would think you could flash the ROM you want on every other device, and then take the Restore file from the complete unit and run it on every other unit. The Restore file is a self-contained .EXE file, it doesn't need the program to be installed (because the whole point is that it will reinstall everything even if your current program structure is FUBAR)
Does anyone know or recommend a backup tool ?
I was really more concerned with restoring options at this point, not necessarily programs. Say the Quick contacts and stuff like that. Have to set those up is a pain again and again ever time you Flash the device.
Cheers!
I'm using PIMbackup 2.8 it's very easy to use and it's free

But why don't u use the sprite backup that comes freely with the phone in one of the cds ??!?
I have used SPB Backup on my TP and previous PPC's. The technology of SPB-Backup is clever. I choose it over Sprite years back after comparing the their respective methods.
This debate has been had many times on the forums.
PPCPimbackup is great but it will only do your SMSs/ emails/ contacts and call logs.
Sprite Backup is great for doing a full backup but you really should not use it to restore options / settings etc after flashing a new ROM, particularly one which has a different build of windows or different reg tweaks applied.
You can use UC or Sashimi to restore progs etc after a flash.

Hi, i'm sorry but i have to correct you, this is not true (anymore). SPB backup does make full backups and does so VERY well.
I think you must've not looked at spb backup for quite a while.
My tp has scheduled backups with the newest spb backup and every night makes a full backup to my sd-card, reboots and voila, working phone when i wake up.

Sorry - my mistake - I meant to say PPCPimbackup (will edit this). SPBBackup suffers the same problem as sprite when flashing a new ROM - namely you use it at your own risk given the potential differences in file structure / reg entries
I'm currently running a cooked wm 6.1 ROM, if I want to upgrade is there a way to backup/restore my non-rom programs and PIM info to a new ROM using sprite or spb? I heard sprite allows you to restore across ROM/devises but I looked through all options and there wasn't one that I could see about only backing up non-rom info. I hope this makes any sense and if anyone has answer I sincerely thank you in advance.
short and sweet, you can't backup programs
You can backup their installers though (cabs) (on your storage card) and use sdauto run with a uc compliant rom to reinstall all of your programs.
but if you are not a frequent flasher than i would just suggest writing down everything you have installed and reinstalling it.
PIM backup will store things like contacts, messages ect.

thanks for the response, the sdauto thing sounds promising. I did see it in the kitchen but I don't know how it works.
I believe the latest SPB backup has an option for restoring after a ROM change. However I have not fully investigated this.
Mike
Since i've been backing up and flashing for a long long while now, i've had the distinct pleasure of finding out that in most cases, you can use a previous backup on a new rom unless the system structure stays the same.
you CAN back programs up, as mike said using SPB Backup (Or clone.. if you can afford it )

thanks for the response. just curious, if you're cooking a new rom to remove some programs that you found you didn't need, then restore a back up will it put those file back into your windows folder? I only ask because I have an apache and main memory mb's are like Manhattan real estate, there's very little of it and it's very valuable Also what's the difference between spb clone and backup? The description sound about the same. Thanks again
There's another thread going on here on the same issue.
Even if it has the feature, i would personally not recommend it. Going through the time to reinstall your stuff (use Sashimi) is more worth it imo.

SPB Clone, for instance, backs up all program files folder. meaning you will get all system files and all program files directories back after the backup.
there are problems with it tho. if the app tries to update a different rom it gets stuck in most cases and stuff won't work and so.. since it replaces stuff in the new rom with stuff from the old rom.
as said here.. you should install everything again after flashing a new rom...and use backups when working on the same one.
Which would you recommend for both FULL backups of EVERYTHING?
Which is better in terms of Ease of use?
Ideally It should be able to Backup and restore everything (ROM/OS, Apps, Settings, Contacts, messages etc etc) IN ONE GO While also being able to just restore Apps, Settings etc ONTO AN UPDATED ROM.
Can either Sprite or PSB do both of the above? and if they can both do it all....which is best?
As well as answering the poll, please feel free to post whether or not you have used BOTH apps or not, also pros and cons of each etc.
Thanks.
Neither. Just use PIM backup or activesync. Backing up the whole ROM and restoring is not advisable anyways, unless you use that over and over on a same ROM.

Isn't it the whole point of making the full system backup? Kind of like making ghost images on PC - so once system becomes unstable, we can easily restore everything without the tiresome reinstallation/reconfiguration?

Same here. Using a mix of PIMBackup, MyPhone, Outlook/WMDC, and Sashimi.
SPB all the way baby!
Not used anything else since i first tried it!
The beauty of it is, it backs up absolutely everything with a few clicks, and you can restore parts of a back up if you don't want a full restore (mainly contacts for me)
Was gobsmacked when it even backed up my opera settings eg. cache on mem card. Haven't found anything it wont backup.
So personally, SPB peeps!
Hope it helps you!
Been using SPB Backup for quite a while.
Being I flash so many ROM's, it saves me a lot of time.
I have also used Sprite, but normally use SPB.
Thanks for the input so far chaps, keep those oppinions coming peeps

I think p107r0 hit the nail on the head with what I'm looking for... basically I want Norton Ghost For HD2 lol.... Or that type of FULL backup and restore.
BUT I also want the app to be able to restore everything EXCEPT the OS specific items (for if/when I flash a different ROM).
Sounds like SPB Does it all.
No votes for sprite then?
Early days yet but SPB is sounding like a winner so far (I'm lazy so I really wanted my backups 'centralised rather than having to use PIM backup AND MyPhone AND sashimi etc).
Thanks again peeps...
BTW... tkalli and snowblind: Would you say SPB is easy to use (noob friendly)?
not sure about Sprite, but SPB comes with a small desktop application similar to Ghost Explorer, enabling you to browse through the backup file and selectively extract selected files and/or even registry keys/entries
Resco Backup is very good program for Leo.
i also used it, but of no apparent reason it caused a problem on my phone. when i was changing the lockscreen wallpaper, my phone was freezing, had to take the battery out every time. with spb backup I use, no issues so far

I know 27 isnt exactly a good sample size but the votes are so stacked in SPBs favour that it looks like a no-brainer already.
Talking of no-brains...
Can anyone who uses SPB Backup, and changes ROMs frequently, tell me if it is possible to restore a 6.5 backup to a 6.5.x ROM???
Would there be any parts of the backup which could be restored to 6.5.x? all of it? none of it?
I'm using a recent EnergyRom based on 6.5. I love it and have just got it set up how I like it so its time for my first full backup, which is where SPB now comes in.
BUT, if I decide to try out a 6.5.x ROM, will I have to start all over again or can all/part of my 6.5 backup be restored???
Thanks in advance.

both apps seem to have "ROM upgrade mode", not sure though how it works,
unless someone more experienced in the subject gives his view, you could try to check in the manuals (if available online that is)
