Hello, I am going to visit the US in August and I would really like to buy Samsung Captivate, but not the Samsung Galaxy S (I really hate its iPhone style design)
Is it possible for a foreigner to buy Captivate (and unlock it) and use it with my own sim card here in Russia?

The design of Samsung Galaxy S really suks and the Captivate one is awesome
dark, just in case you didn't already know, as of now unlocks aren't available, but it's highly likely that they will be soon. This means that you wont be able to use your phone right away when you get back to the mother land.
On the other hand if you hang in there, by the time unlocks come out, there will be plenty of guides on how to make this phone look as little as the ios as possible. Not to mention alot more online support for it.
Just wanted to make sure you didn't get back home to a huge disappointment .

There is a market, but you can't put stuff on there that isn't from the market.
With AT&T, the only thing can be installed is stuff from the market.

Yup thats pretty much the case, so if you do not mind it, you are good to go. I would not worry too much about an unlock as this phone is spreading faster than fire through the community and should be unlockable pretty soon.
That I have no idea about. I have never owned an Android phone so I only go by what I have read.
but as of this weekend, I will own one!

You should try asking AT&T for the unlock when you purchase it from them. They should be able to provide you with one free of charge since you are paying for the phone outright!
After paying 6 bucks, this is the reply I got from their site.

The non contract price I was just quoted from the ATT store were I purchased my phone said the the price off contract was 499.00
I was going to buy this phone for 350.00 but 500.00 is a little steep.

I got mine on Thursday 9/8. Having some fun tinkering around with it. Sadly, the pen and keyboard folio are being shipped at a later date (ordered from macconnection.com, they were about $50 cheaper than directly from Lenovo), so I haven't gotten the parts that made me choose this tablet over the many others out there.
Can't wait for root, though!

Not sure what model you ordered but I got the 64GB one from pcconnection and it came with the pen. Glad I canceled my Lenovo order and ordered from PCC...Lenovo kept pushing back the ship date. From PCC I got the tablet the next day after ordering and it was about $100 less than Lenovo since there was no tax and it came with the pen.
according to the lenovo shop where i got the tablet from, the pen is in cluded in all 32/64 GB models, only the 16GB models come without the pen.
have mine now since 1 week and i'm very happy with it! hope that an own forum will appear soon so the dev on this nice piece of hardware can start ;-)
I would also like to see this rooted! Really liking it so far!
+1 on dedicated forum and root request, this would make the tablet even better. I have to be able to titanium backup restore my angry birds .

Ah, yeah, I got the 16GB model, didn't really need more storage than that (and if I did, I could just pop in an SDHC card). Wasn't aware that the higher capacity models were bundled with the pen! I suppose that would explain the price differences a bit.
Looks like PCConnection and MacConnection are the same business, but it was just that MacConnection was what came up in my shopping search. It's interesting how much cheaper they were than directly from Lenovo, heh.

So all international sellers have to deal direct with fruitsphone.com on their gmail to make purchases. But again only payment method accepted is Western Union which is obviously risky.
Some of us have bought through Fastcardtech.com which is not an official reseller. But they have probably bought the product from taobao and are reselling.
Have ordered one for a friend from them . Should get it in 1 weeks time.
I am keen to try and get another one ( for myself) direct from fruitsphone but have asked for more specifications from them as they seem to have the 16g ones as well.

Fastcardtech just emailed me 5 mins ago to tell me they will have to refund me as I am asking them to ship to different address than my paypal address/ They want me to change my paypal address and re order.

Really nice! i like the GooApple V5 3G, but is a litte overpriced.
Also i see that they are not so far with the IOS rom that they have build in the "NEDERLANDS" -> Dutch language.
So i think to wait when they made this working.
Possible that the fruitsphone will be faster to made this possible.

Jesus Christ.. They've had plenty of time to check it.. I've not heard anything from them yet. When the refund make sure they also refund the 4.5% taken by PayPal..
BTW when you then get a phone directly from fruitsphone we can compare them..

Great . For my part am still struggling with my order. They cancelled the first one and are supposed to credit back my paypal within 24 hrs.

Yeah its very difficult to navigate on the fruitsphone.com or Taobao. But what I found was that they are actually selling it at a higher price to the chinese market . The going rate for the 8 g on Toabao is Usd 240 and Usd 260 for the 16 g.
Thats higher than the Gooapple v5 3g.
Strange that fastcardtech does not have the 16g version. But I guess we will find out that its very easy to change the micro sd.
I have just bought a 16gb card class 6 at app. $20. Just need to buy the screwdriver when I get the phone.. Will do a unboxing video for sure..

Perso I have given up trying to order from Fruitsphone. While they seem to be a relatively serious company , their english comms is very poor and they only accept Western Union and the later charges almost 15% commission.
So I have reverted back to ordering from Fastcardtech. Will see what comes out of it.
To be able to download the root tools and rom package from fruitphone you have to insert yout imei in the forum to be awarded a vip status. Am registered on their forum but without a working imei , I cant proceed.
I guess it would be easier that the first one of us getting the phone to complete registration, get the roms and tools and post them here.
Am not due to get it before next week - status still unshipped with ''our honest pal'' at fastcardtech!!!
Mine is shipped (confirmed on mail from them) I've go tracking number but can't find any trace.. I did write them before I ordered, after my order was placed, before shipping and after shipping each time to make sure they did what they had to.. have a transcription in my mail.. still waiting for first step on route to be traceable.

Though some chats are very specific to the meaning behind unlock, I can't help but think that this means GSM unlock.

Obviously I hope it's true but I severely doubt it. I mean, how often do low level customer service reps know info like that before we do? Out of the 6 people I talked to at vzw none even knew the phone was shipped early for pre orders...
Hopefully it's not a way to trick the masses into upgrading to block the way we get root now.

This is what I'm thinking as they've been mentioning that specific unlock for some time as part of an early OTA update. I hope it's the bootloader that's really being discussed but I certainly have my doubts.
We can only wait and see.

Well, I don't believe it either, but there might be some light at the end of the tunnel. I went into chat and asked. I encourage as many people to do this just so verizon may realize there's a huge interest for it. To do this, just go to the verizon page and pretend you're buying the SIII. There's a button that says 'chat with rep', or just wait there for a minute and you will get a popup.

I too was hoping we would follow suit. Currently we will be offering the developers version of the SIII, which comes with a unlocked bootloader for our customers. I do hope that we make a change to the current model that is out, and that we unlock the bootloader, but currently there are no plans to do so. At the very least I hope that we at least consider selling the unlocked version in a subsidized manner with a contract, as opposed to selling it full retail through Samsung.
Your voices are being heard, and I hope we truly consider some other options for our customers in the development community. In the meantime, really, the only other option I can recommend is to maybe sell your SIII. I am sure you can find someone who may not be interested in the unlocked version, but would like to upgrade to that phone and not be under contract. Remember the 16 GB model starts at $599.99. Depending how much you paid, I would charge as much as possible for the phone since they are coming out on top without the contract, and use the money you get towards the unlocked version. It may not be ideal, but at least there are some options for now.

Can't believe he told you to sell the device.
Yea, that was like a wtf moment. What I interpreted it as was "Buy device for $200, try to gamble it off for at least $400. Then go shell out another $200 and purchase the developer edition."
Not only does that void any chance of insurance but I would purchase the phone unsubsidized if I wanted a "Developer's Phone".
This is a new corporate low even their employees don't like their actions. I work for Apple, we would never tell our customers to do something like that.
EDIT: Just to clarify, no I am not an apple fanboy... I do not own an apple product. Not even an iPod. It's just my job to represent them.

Are you trying to sim unlock the phone? Always do a little bit of research before buying something, unless of course it's a reputable site then no need to worry

Also I have my 2 cents to share. First of all the site is wrongly formatted for the left half of the screen and doesnt auto size to fit your screen CENTERED. Thats Strike 1 for False-ness.
Strike 2 is that WHY DO YOU HAVE TO TRACK YOUR ORDER WHEN YOUR JUST BUYING AN UNLOCK CODE?
Strike 2.5 if they mail the unlock code on a piece of paper to your address, that is even more suspicious. There is no need to mail it to you by postal service and its much faster and cheaper through email.
Strike 3 is that I don't see this site in any trusted reviews. If there are very little then they must be absolutely faked.
Strike 4 is that their motto is North American Unlock Specialists. Is that even a valid position to be a specialist in? 99.99999 / 133337% fake. It doesnt make any sense at all.
Strike 5 is their copyright display : " © UnlockCodeWarehouse 2009 " what?!? if their site was last updated 2009 then why do they support a 2013 phone? Makes even less sense. If you check their logo at the top it clearly says ALWAYS FIRST WITH NEW MODELS. NEW WITH 2009 COPYRIGHT?

Basically their disclaimer says that when you press "Purchase", your agreeing that they are not responsible for anything they do to you after. If they dont give you any code to unlock they are not responsible. Meaning you sorta agreed to get scammed. Ouch
Im really sorry for your loss. I also did get scammed as well some year or 2 ago in a game
EDIT: I found my last strike. If you go to their terms and conditions in the full page I noticed this one detail:

However if you check the few lines under it there is no contact method, and if you scroll to the bottom of the page, NO CONTACT METHOD AT ALL. That detail alone ends this entire case as a 100% S.C.A.M.
Ok so found this guy on ebay
and get the code in less than 30 minutes and it costed less than 2 bux !!!!

i cancelled my debit card like 2 hours ago
and get a new one
i do not want that later i found that i get charged for 200 or 500 bux
from somebody else as i already lost 7 bux from the scammer

and now have a tmobile sim installed
