[Q] Deactivate Data connection - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Hey,
I have a HTC Touch Diamond and i tried out today Android. It looks good, working with it is like under WM. There is one thing that makes me angry. During the installation it has established automaticly a connection to the internet. It is okay, if i want it. I found after 30 min. of search no function or setting to disable the automatic connection and that made it not really trustworthy. Any idea where i can find a Setting to deactivate that ?
Thanks for help

On android handsets you hold the power button, then it gives options to turn off phone, put into plane mode, and turn off data connection.

Paying for 3G

Hi everyone.
This is a really nooby question, but I can't find the answer anywhere.
If I open my internet browser on my phone, it automatically connects to the internet.
When I close my browser, it stays connected.
I have to go in to Comms Manager, switch my phone in to Flight Mode and back to Phone Mode so it switches off.
What if I just left it on?
I believe GPRS is chargable by the amount of data downloaded rather than dial-up-esque paying-for-the-amount-of-time-connected.
If I left it connected, would I be charged for it despite being idle?
I am on Orange UK Dolphin contract.
no unless they charge for the "keepalive" comm to the isp
various isp's could have various takes on that
yes you will be charged if it periodically downloads data like the weather plugin in htc home. You dont state what device you have but you can actually click on the G/E/H symbol next to the radio signal on the today screen and click on the disconnect button(if it is enabled). If you havent got a disconnect button . Download and try schaps advanced config v2 and try that if that doesnt work download tweak2k2 net that has the option to switch the button option for you
I called Orange. They don't have the 'keep alive' charge. She said that it really doesn't matter, so long as nothing gets downloaded to my device then I won't get charged for it.
Weather updates and email etc. is all set to manual.
But, none-the-less I will be looking into the programs noted by Martin.
Thank you both.
P.S. I have a Hermes. I should probably put that in my signature.
Holding the end call button for a few seconds will switch it off.

I know I'm a bit late. I thought this thread would be dead and buried now, but I wanted to say thank you. This is the exact bit of info I was looking for.

wi-fi on the diamond

Hi
I just got my first htc phone today the touch diamond it all seems very nice so far im sure i'll figure it all out soon i tried out the wi-fi but now not sure how to turn it off, it keeps popping up with new notifications of the connections available could anyone advise how to turn it off, many thanks
another question as well the 3g sign at the top just means its available doesnt it? i browsed the web briefly to see what it was like i dont want to be charged for on the net as my unlimited web browsing doesnt start for a couple of weeks, i guess when you exit the page your exited out of the internet, is that correct? many thanks
best to have a good play around with the device to learn all of what she has to offer tap start, settings connections tab then wifi then menu "turn off wifi" - press and hold the hang up button you will be provided with the option "terminate data connection".
have a look in the diamond thread lots to read and learn also check out the wiki also
hope this helps

Stop WinMobile establishing data-connections without asking

Hey mates!
First of all I wanna wish you a hapy new year
Ok, now to my question.
I've got a HTC Touch HD a week ago.
I recognized that it establishes a data-connection without asking me.
When i'm using Wifi - no problem.
But as I don't have a data-flat that gets quite expensive, if I can't use Wifi (most of the time no wifi available).
Is it possible to set up Winmobile so that it asks me BEFORE establishing an data connection?
I didn't find any solutions, google didn't help me, too.
Of yourse I could just change the adresses in the settings.
e.g- "internet.t-mobile.de" to "internet.t-mobile.deXXX" ---> no connection possible.
But i want to receive and send MMS at any time, so that would not be possible any more.
I hope you can help me, thx.
greetz
try nodata
this should do what you need....i think
http://www.modaco.com/content/pocket-pc-software/246171/new-free-utility-nodata/
thx, but not really what i need.
With this programm i still have to close connections by hand.
I just want WinMobile to ask me BEFORE it establishes a connection.
For example: When I open an programm which tries to download something, a popup should appear
--->
Establish data-connection?
[ ]Yes
[ ] NO
I hope u understand my problem

No one with the same problem here and a solutuon?

I have the same problem with my Touch 3G (Jade). Turning the Data Connection off in the Main Touchflow settings tab helps but doesn't stop it completely. The worst thing is that doesn't seem to download anything but just connecting is enough to start costing.
I spoke to HTC today and they gave me a solution to this problem. Go to Settings, Connections, Connections, Advanced and then Select Networks. There you should find a drop down tab with something like ******GPRS, where ****** is your network. Now now choose New and create a new connection name like "No GPRS" for example. Click OK.
You now have a title but no settings so when you select this one, the phone can't connect to the internet. It might attempt to connect but it won't go through. Don't worry about MMS as this uses a different set of settings and works perfectly (for me).
Hope this helps, Woolly.
Find what apps are creating the connection so you can prevent it. Spb Monitor should be able to show you that.
Using Modaco NoData (link given above) will just do the same saving your time (you don't have to create a fake connection set).
What schlitzohr1812 wants is a way to make WM ask for permission to connect. I haven't heard of anything like this, but if you assign a shortcut to NoData it's almost as easy as what you are looking for. By the way, despite the name, NoData will prevent WM from opening connections, not only to exchange data over them.
Just remember that if you disable the connection while it is already open, you still have to close it manually. Also beware that if in your Comm Manager you have an enabled "Data connection" button (on some phones it's always disabled when the connection is closed, on others it can be used to open it), that button WILL open a connection even if they are disabled.
Thx for helping guys, but "Black Antitoon" is right.
That's not exactly what I was searching for but better than nothing.
I'm used to my old nokia phone (N70) which asked me before.
Incomprehensible why Windows Mobile does not have such an option...
greetz Timo
anybody wrote an app for this data permission yet please?

GPRS under control. is it possible?

Hi,
when the wifi signal is lost or activesync is dsconnected, my HTC TouchPro automatically tries to switch to GPRS connection. like when i start browser or messenger application it turns GPRS by default.
My question is: have anybody seen the application or tweak that would show the dialogue window BEFORE the gprs connection established, something like
"application XXX tries to use GPRS connection. and two buttons: Allow|Deny"
that's actually all we need to control GPRS expences, especially when in roaming. (yes, i know about "no data in roaming" app). sometimes it goes like this: you're sure you're online using wifi, and browse or download a film or music. BUT, in the middle of the process the wifi connection is lost, but you didn't notice it, the device switched to GPRS automatically without notice and questions, so the rest of your download becomes golden for you.
if there were such an app with a simple two-buttons-dialogue, life would be easier for all of us... is there?
I have been dreaming for the same thing for like years
actually i had the same problem,
i was browsing comfortably using wifi, but unknown to me, when the signal got interrupted, it switched to GPRS...
actually we would know if we look at the icon, but it's absurd to look at the icon every once in a while...
so, my solution was... to call up the provider, and have them terminate the GPRS service.
it might not serve you any good, since you probably still need the option to be able to go online when there's no wifi, but it served my purpose really well.
So, as i can see, it's not just my whim - it's really necessary add-on. are here some advanced members, coders who are able to solve it? afaik, this feature is not available in winmobile itself, but somehow implemented by Nokia, for example.
Got IT!
guys,
i found the solution. it appears much easier than i expected: just check the
start/settings/sounds and notifications/notifications - connection established. [i have localized WM version, menu strings in english version may vary from my translation. so, just find something close by meaning]
that's it!
good luck.
Yes, I always set it like that so I know it connects with GPRS/3G but I won't still ask me if I want to connect or not, the notification is only good way to try to disconnect it quickly... if I am the one using the phone but if someone else is using it, it's just worthless.

[SOLVED] Is there a .exe which can turn off your data connection.

Basically, im trying to find a program which will turn off
any data connections you have.
If there is, Id assign it to the send key (press & hold)
This would remove the need to open up the comms
manager then click "data connection"
Hope there is, it would make life a lot easier for me
and everyone else who uses mobile internet a lot
but doesnt want to murder their battery.
I use the internet a lot because of being on contract
and have unlimited internet usage, but if I left it connected
all the time, my Touch Pro 2 would probably only last
about a few hours. Im constantly having to open up
the communication manager and turn off my data connection
that way.
alternatively, do any programmers know how to turn off the data connection through coding? I know a bit of Visual basic and would happily make my own program for this, I just cant seem to find out how to turn it off.
Does holding the end-call button for a few seconds work? It has done on all htc models I have tried
now i feel really stupid
I knew that, I simply hadnt set it up to.
It was set to lock the phone whenever I held the end key,
so I just put it out of my mind. lol
thanks
youve made my life a lot easier
Ive now bound the Notes app to the green key ;D
Isnt it just sweet when theres a simple answer
Ill change your title to solved and close the thread
