Mini USB to External HD possible? - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Specifically for an EVO is my main interest, but if it is possible at all with a droid phone I'd like to see info on that.
I was thinking about getting another SD card and just keep movies on one, and TV series on another or something like that but instead I just thought... I wonder if I could just some plug an external HD into this phone some how and watch the stuff off that.
With the location of the SD card on this phone I don't really look forward to taking the back off, and battery, and then the card itself if a little tricky to get out.
Any ideas on this? With the sales on 1-2 TB HDs that are going on occasionally it would be pretty awesome to get this kind of set up.
I did find an archive post which I can not link that seemed to be on the right track but is for WM devices.
Did search for external hd, external hard drive, hard drive and a few others and couldn't find an existing thread on this. If this is the wrong forum for this kind of post just people me in the right direction
Thanks

Someone enabled USB Host Mode for Nexus One so in Future its Possible for us Desire Owners too, but for other phones i dont know.

I found two articles showing it to be possible, or that is what it seems to be saying it is possible... I just can't really follow the technical jargon
I would link them but I can't, but you can just google "enable host mode EVO" but since most of the stuff I read is from Feb, I imagine somewhere someone hit a wall on this idea.

Do I have to have an SD card?

Just rooted my captivate. Was about to install a rom(installed rom manager via market) and forgot I haven't purchased an SD card since it didn't come with one for some reason
Can I not treat my 16gb internal storage as my 'sd card'? ie. put my roms on it etc or do I HAVE to have an SD card?
Your thread caught my eye as I have been completing my daily ritual of skimming through the days XDA threads and I thought I would respond. First off congrats on the phone and congrats on rooting. Just a little advice you really should do some research and just when you think you are ready do a little more. I say this in the nicest way I know how and please don't take it the wrong way I am just trying to save you a lot of heartache if something happens to your new phone my friend. There are a lot of things that can go wrong when you get into the rooting world as you have root to every thing on your phone. I have no idea what you have read or done, but currently there are a hundreds of roms out there, but there are none currently for the Captivate (unless you count the JM series for the i9000). That is the reason that this thread caught my eye as it kind of sounds like you are about to flash just any ROM. I may be way off of third base and if I am please forgive me. Like I said before I am just trying to save you a lot of heartache. ROMs have to made unique for every platform. For example, Nexus One users can only use ROMs that are made for their phones. There is a lot of misconception out there right now as tech blogs and places make it seem that every phone out there can run Sense or flash Froyo. This is not always the case. Those ROMs have been created by awesome developers that have taken the time to port those features over to their respected devices. So like I said just do yourself a favor and do some research. I will be checking back on this thread or you can PM me anytime with questions I will be more than happy to try and answer questions you may have as I was also once in your shoes. Let me know if you want some help finding some threads that explain things a little better as I have a bunch bookmarked. I have spent probably around 100 hours getting to know Android and how the mod community works, and the "Search" field is honestly your best friend so use it.

Holy **** you're a nice guy.
Oh yeah one more thing I should at least answer your question for you, right lol. Samsung graciously gave us 16gb of internal memory. 2 gb of that is partitioned for apps and the other is used for anything else like music, videos, and whatever else you want to load on your phone. You also have an SD slot that will fit up to 32 gb (I have not tested the 32gb card only the 16gb on the Captivate so if you plan on the 32 do some research to make sure as I read somewhere that Eclair 2.1 phones have had problems recognizing 32 cards). The 16gb is currently more than any Android phone has built in so theoretically we can store 48gb on the phone (again, with 32gb card if indeed that does work with our phones I did read that it can from the official specs). Have fun man this is a great phone and Android is the best platform around.

I try as I used to be in the same situation. You never know who you help out this could be the next Cyanogen or Paul O'Brien lol.
You can, to a certain extent, use your built-in 16GB of storage as an SD card. That extent, however, in all likelihood does not include usig it for upgrading ROMs. Practically every guide I've read so far warns that the internal memory will be erased, and that could be bad if a ROM upgrade program erases itself before the upgrade is complete. Considering that a 16GB MicroSD card can be had for $50 pretty easily, and smaller ones even cheaper, it would make sens to me to just get the damn card and not risk bricking your phone. Also, I think angermeans' caution is well advised, unless this is not your only phone, or your only Captivate, and you like tinkering with phones for fun.

I also read that same thing and I should of added that info. The way that Samsung built this phone is still done in a way different way that all other Android phones before it. I am still wondering why the leading company in flash memory decided to go with an internal SD card for memory. I hope I am wrong about this little bit of info, but from what I have read that is exactly what they have done.
thanks for the replies. i learned last year how to root my g1, install recoveries, roms, etc. even learned how to turn my sd card into ext2,3,4 partition, etc.
it's just been a while and i just assumed people busted ass to get some polished roms out for the galaxy s phones. i really appreciate your post and will just give the community some more time before i jump the gun again.
i was hoping to flash froyo on it
and i don't mind getting an sd card, just didn't want to run into town yesterday afternoon just for the memory card.
thanks guys!

New Users -- New to Android??!

New Users and folks New to Android:
First let me say, "Been there. Still working on it!" But on to some practical suggestions and comments:
1. If you are new to all this, don't try to move too fast. Read these forums and you will find many messages saying "I don't know what I am doing, but I just finished doing it all and my tablet looks dead! Help?!" If you are new to all this, read these forums for a good while and make sure you understand before you leap. Definition: A "good while" is not minutes to an an hours -- how about a day for experienced Android people and a bunch more for the rest of us.
2. Learn the factory setup first. I can understand some of the early adopters moving too fast because the early gtabs had a mess for software and some of it worked really poorly. But whatever you buy now should flash to OTA (Over the Air Update) 3389 fairly quickly, and it is usable. You can use it to find out where all the settings, bells and whistles are to get what you want done.
3. Go a step at a time. When building computers or working with software, it is always better to work with and prove something before introducing complications. If you are burning a ROM (say CWM -- ClockWorkMod -- for example), don't just install it and move on. When you get it installed, learn it and test the functions and see what is there to be used -- before moving on. If it's not working right or you don't undestand it, don't move ahead -- look for answers or fixes.
4. Read the manual. Learn what you can from the paper and online manuals. There is a Vega site -- I have a thread posted in "Development Forum" which tells where the manual for the Vega tablet it and it does a fair job of introducing the Vegan ROM look and stock features. Viewsonic's G-Tablet site also has this kind of info. And the devs here have put together countless FAQs, guidelines, etc........
5. When things don't go right, take a breath and don't panic. I have had G-tabs for over a month now and I don't honestly know of any that were totally bricked. (I know many have been given up on and sold or returned or ???). I would say that by now most all the iterations of G-Tab failures that can happened have turned up in these Forums. Search and find answers. Ask questions about what you don't understand about the fixes. Then fix it.
6. REMEMBER WHAT THIS PLACE IS!!!! I have read any number of folks who have come here, messed up their tablet and then gotten angry with someone (or all of us) here about it. Remember that this is a place where private individuals are developing alternatives that are on the bleeding edge and sometimes even beyond!! If you are using anything except stock here, you have to assume the risk that all of us assume in trying to do something neat!
Don't fuss. Ask for help.
This post probably has been too long. But I have been developing hardware and software (not Android) since 1979 and I know a bunch about making mistakes!!! Also about preventing mistakes.
I hope the principles I suggest above will help you keep it together and accomplish something great!

Have you been spying on me?
This describes my situation exactly and I appreciate your input and advice.
I've never used Android, don't even own a smart phone. I'm in the situation of not knowing what I don't know, if that makes sense.
I managed to accidentally add some icons to the home screen and it took me a day and a half to figure out how to remove them.
I've been hesitant to try to make any changes but I realized that I've only been using the tablet to play Angry Birds and do some light surfing. The gtab has so much potential and I have barely scratched the surface.
I will be taking the plunge this weekend with some of the mods that are available, but as you've suggested I need to keep reading. Lots of reading.
Thanks again for the tips,
Neudle
Another thing I would emphasize is when doing something like flashing recovery or loading a new ROM make sure you follow all the instructions. I've had more than one friend come to me asking for help with their phone because they skipped a few steps when flashing a ROM ("Oh, well that didn't seem important so I didn't do it"). I can so far say that with my Nexus One and my Gtab I have never had an issue when I followed the exact steps for flashing/installing.
Also, if something does go wrong, don't go into full out panic, quite often there is a way to recover and a bit of searching or asking nicely for help will have you back up and running. Don't forget, backups are your friend. Before doing anything substantial I always back up my apps and data with Titanium Backup then boot into recovery and do a Nandroid backup.
Different people move at different speeds.
I am brand new to android, brand new to tablets.
Have had this a week.
Days 1-3 "yea ok this 3389 update works"
DAYS 4-5 "LOVE this peformance pack and fixed market"
DAY 6 "lets try vegan 5.1" followed by "I bricked it into a boot loop and none of the fixes worked. Can i take it back" followed by "nv flash is AWESOME, i can recover my gtab from ANY screw up!!!!!
DAY 7 VEGAN 5.1 INSTALLED (and invented my own modified way of flashing/recovery that is not exactly the same as the totorial why identifying which of the steps CANT BE skipped/Altered (WHAT i refer to as the "7-10"))
DAY 8 WHY wont vegan 5.1 acknowledge my new micro sdcard i bought today and do i need to format this or something?
By the way feel free to answer my day 8 issue before i start a new thread.
#8 MicroSd Card
The GTab calls internal storage sdcard and any microsd/microsdhc cards you install sdcard2. Look in your file directory under /sdcard2 or /mnt/sdcard2 and you will see your microsd card. You don't need to format the card first.

[Q] Option to switch internal/external SD

Does anyone have a script or any solution to do this? I have a 32GB class 10 Samsung microsd card and would love to use it for my main SD card.
Moderator: If this is in the wrong place please move it. Thanks!
Since this is a question and not Development, I moved this to General.
Does anyone know of a way to do this
being trying this once and this might be the only way...

So my question (since it kinda pertains to this) I could technically move the Google Music Folder to the Sd Card instead of having my google music take up my internal storage? Or am I looking at that program wrong...
Thank you so much edan1979 for your suggestion. I love the Overcome guys so much but I meant something like this in the Razr forum

I'd like something like that too, particularly if it was just a switch to flip. I don't feel comfortable tinkering around with programming if I don't have to.

More SD Poblems?

So, after reading through all the issues some of us have had on these cards..... I was feeling pretty darn good about myself, as I had none.... Well, I have since swapped to a new phone. I now have 2 micro sd cards that can not be reformatted in anyway shape or form.... I have tried (I think), just about all tricks and software. The big question that I'm unsure if anyone has asked is, does anyone think these can be locked by the Kitkat upgrade some of us did? It just strikes me a little odd that, nothing I do will allow me to clean these cards. I have a new card in, and I'm able to read and write like normal. But I'm sure there's something I'm missing. Thanks for any insight
I also asked this in the General section, and got no replies. If a mod would please delete that, or let me know if I can? Thank you.

Do a Google search for:
"Android devices that support HDMI external display"
Look through the listed devices and then search XDA to see which of those devices have custom ROMs here, then decide which if those devices you want to use.
Don't expect someone else to do the searching and comparing for you. We don't mind helping around here, but we don't put that kind of time into doing things for you that you should be doing for yourself. We don't spoonfeed anyone here, we don't hold anyone's hand and we don't do the hard work for you.
