JF7 OTA update announced by AT&T
AT&T site has an update dated today, 21 Sep, for a firmware update JF7 which will be pushed out to users (15k at a time)
I can't post the URL (new member) but you can find the link if you search for "att answer center KB110797"
09/21/2010 - Firmware Over the Air (FOTA) software update changing software version from I897UCJF6 to I897UCJH7. A 12MB download is being pushed to Samsung Captivate owners starting on 09/21/2010 and will continue Tuesday through Friday at 15K customers per day until complete. This is NOT an operating system update. This update includes the following software updates:
Preinstalled software - QuickOffice for Android will allow users to edit various Microsoft Office documents.
Messaging - Exchange 2003 support, MMS and other messaging enhancements.
Voice - Improved calling experience.
Media - media scanning time improvements.
Note:
This firmware update is not intended to resolve all device reset or freezing issues, which may be caused by:
Corrupted files
Device memory becoming filled and leaving insufficient room to run applications.
Use of incompatible 3rd party applications on the Samsung Captivate.
http://www.wireless.att.com/answer-center/solutionDisplay.jsp?solutionId=KB110797
What if we already have QuickOffice installed?
I'm interested to see what the specific fixes are.

Well, I'm glad to see that AT&T decided to offer updates OTA, at least! I had heard rumors that they weren't going to do this.
Only 12 MB - i wonder if they are going to remove pc tether with this update - i guess so. It could be that the real differences between JF6 and JH7
no luck downloading
I couldn't download this update, I'll update the thread about the changes if I succeed.
I've already downloaded the JH6 stock firmware one-click installer in case this is buggy.

So, if this update comes by and asks me to update my phone, will it completely screw up my phone if I am not running a bare stock phone.
I mean that I am rooted and running voodoo's lag fix.
Will this update require me to be on unrooted and remove the lagfix?

Yup, PC Internet (tether) option is gone in JH7. Is there anyway to get it back?

Samsung is issuing a fix for the Samsung Captivate's GPS issues and its lengthy media scanning today. It's over-the-air. More information on MobileBurn.
Yeah I just read this also. I wonder if they are trying to push JH7 as the update or if maybe they changed JH7 a bit? Man I really hope we get good GPS. Reading more it seems it is JH7 "The update for the Captivate will also improve additional device functions, such as media scanning time, add the full version of Quickoffice and address Microsoft Exchange 2003 policy support.
"
I bet that update they are mentioning is the same one being pushed by AT&T currently:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8248900
Engadget has posted about the fix as well:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/22/samsung-captivate-gets-gps-fix-other-galaxy-s-versions-wait-pat/
"An update to improve the Samsung Captivate's GPS performance is now available. Captivate customers will receive a notification on their device that an update is available and will simply need to download the file to update their phone. The updates will be pushed to customers' devices over the next few weeks.

Note the mentioning of the addition of Quickoffice, and I believe the update that is being pushed, and what is mentioned here is one and the same.
Should this affect the sre or lagfix i have installed? or should i odin back to stock?
App Store
Please be advised that a software update is now available that provides access to an Apps Store directly from your G Tablet. Owners of the G Tablet will receive an automatic notice of the new software upgrade. Users can then simply click on the Apps Store icon from their G Tablet to gain access to 1,000's of leading Android apps. (Please note that the automatic notification requires that the G Tablet has WiFi Internet access upon power-on.)
Adobe Flash Support
The Viewsonic G Tablet hardware and firmware provides full support for the Adobe Flash Player built into the unit. At the time that the G Tablet was manufactured, the Adobe Player application was not available for this product. We anticipate that a version of the Adobe Flash Player Application will be available by December 19, 2010. Owners of the G Tablet will receive an automatic notice that the plug-in is available for download to further expand their web access and entertainment. (Please note that the automatic notification requires that the G Tablet has WiFi Internet access upon power-on.)
anyone get the appstore update?
None here to report
(no mods)
If this is an OTA update, most likely none of us with mods will get it -- it's probably getting pushed down via the TnT OTA service. They might push down an update.zip and then do a reboot into recovery to run it. If that's the case, we might be able to intercept the update. Maybe.
EDIT: I called CS (I love 'em, they are a great bunch to talk to, in all seriousness). Sounds like the update is ready to go and it sounds like it's an OTA update. Lots of bug fixes as well as their App Store, which sounds like a web site of some kind. It may have been pulled at the last minute but should show up this weekend or early next week.
It also sounds like the new shipments to Staples are part of the reason for getting this out so I hope that means they will work overtime to get this out ASAP. We will see.
Ignoring the terrible condition at launch, the update came pretty quickly. Hopefully we'll see more updates.
No update here and I registered my unit right after I got it.
I wonder if there is anything we have to do to get the update?
Update process?
IS there anything that an enduser needs to do to recieve the update? If it's OTA does it ask before it install that update? I keep checking their website but they don't seem to view it as a communication tool. Those poor CS people are about to get swamped I guess

I got my update Thursday night. My tablet posted a notification that I had an update available, I clicked on it and it downlozded. It seems to have fixed the clock loosing time, their market app now works, the update icon was changed, wifi seems to be more stable and reliable. They also seem to have addressed the storage card issues, but it still does not recognize my microsd card installed. It sees it but I haven't found a way to access it yet.
Downside: they screwed up the default home page. The three windows are now blank waiting for data. I have not been able to add or change any thing on this screen.
I am running stock tablet no mods.

Still nothing on the update here... no notification or anything. I sure hope my registration went through. I saw where somone said they got an email after registering, I did not receive an email.

That's my goal - I want the update just so I can mod it into TnT Lite 2.00. Right now I have a vanilla config on my device and I'm waiting it out.
I have a feeling that we won't see the update until Monday, but I hope that I'm wrong.

They told me that there was a UAT period where the CS reps got the update on their test devices. Perhaps they don't have an actual UAT side and they added it to their production infrastructure instead which would have allowed a few consumers to get the update? That's my guess.
Can you check your kernel version? I'm curious if they sent a new one. Also, do you have an update.zip in the root of your /sdcard and, if so, can you post that? That could be the actual update that they sent down.

Yes, that is the icon to update. Just got off the phone with support. The update has been pulled until 11/22. Allegedly there were other things to be included and they wanted to release it all at once, that's what I was told anyway.

Bad decision on their part - better to have an interim update now and another early next, unless there's a nasty bug in the interim build.
A lot of shoppers will be out this weekend and they really need that firmware update NOW.
EDIT: Added a new thread - I felt this was important enough that it was warranted.

Since I got my G yesterday, I have not seen the App Store anywhere on it. Here is the update I have on mine:
Tap UI Update
Current Version: Flextronics/harmony/harmony/:2.2/FRF91/hudson-20101023-135552-TnT_SVN_2638:user/testkeys
I registered my product this morning (2 hours ago) and haven't received any emails confirming registration from VS.
I do have wifi on at power-on.
Purchased it at Sears outlet for $279 of which I think is a steal just for the hardware.
I am still completely stock - no OTA update yet for me either. I did not get any sort of confirmation email when I registered...the screen just said "Thanks for Registering" and that was it.

IMPORTANT! SOFTWARE UPDATE
On November 22nd , 2010 there will be a software update released to all owners of the G Tablet. This update will be automated to your G Tablet when you are connected via wifi, however, some early customers may need to click on the Tap UI icon in the “more” section of your home page to initiate the software update. (The download will take anywhere from 1 minute to 1 hour depending upon your wifi network speed.) Please follow the instructions posted on your G Tablet to install the latest product update which improves your G Tablet experience. This update includes a new Marketplace, additional applications, increased performance and micro SD capabilities. Look for additional updates in the future as we continue to enhance the G Tablet Thank you for your patience and cooperation.
I called Viewsonic twice today, so here's my brain dump.
- This update is supposed to be released on Monday the 22nd.
- Allegedly the update will make Wifi more stable, will fix sd mounting issues (not exactly sure what that means yet), the TnT UI will be more smooth, TZ is fixed plus other bug fixes. I asked about the 90 degree accelerometer issue but no news on whether that's fixed. Also no news on whether Angry Birds will work OOTB with this update. Lastly, they will add an AppStore care of PocketGear, I believe. Flash will NOT be included with this Monday update, that will not happen until mid/EO December.
- This fix is OTA (over-the-air) only, and it will probably only work on unmodded TnT firmware. I know that there's a OTA service that runs constantly on stock , and I purposely ripped that out of TnT Lite. And the zPad and cm6.1 mods don't have that service running either, so don't expect to get this update automagically if you are running one of our mods. I have asked for an offline update given that WiFi is one of the things they are fixing, but I don't think that's going to happen. Hopefully I am proved wrong.
- Once I get the update myself , I will wrap it up into a new TnT Lite 2.00 update shortly thereafter. Probably give me at least a day to do that and test it.
- I will also create a vanilla restore package based on this image. That will actually be the first thing I will create because I'll need that before I can create TnT Lite 2.00.
Hope this information helps clear up any lingering questions.

Good work, as usual. I reverted back to stock in anticipation of the up to see what difference it would make. Let me know if you need me to pull something off of it.
Wonder how many here remember the roots of the term, "brain-dump," in the tech industry.
VS are shooting themselves in the foot if they do not do not offer this as a download.
Even a strict company like VZW offers a download option for updates for connectivity reasons.
Hope they do the logical thing.
It's now 11/22/2010 05:20 AM CST.
Checking for update before I go to work, still nothing. I uninstalled any app killers I had, just to make sure a needed process wasn't being killed.
Many people have applied the late January 2011 update from Viewsonic. Some accomplished this through OTA update and others by downloading and sideloading. Does anybody know why Viewsonic has no information about this update on their website? There's nothing in their Support or News areas on the GTablet webpages. In fact, if you click on the "Learn More" link on the GTablet software update menu item on the News page, you get a Error 404: Not Found. (http://www.viewsonic.com/gtablet/news.htm) It appears that if you don't follow this forum, you might know nothing about it at all.
Now, I've been pretty pleased with the tablet overall, especially after I added the forum.xda Enhancement Pack and Market, so I'm not out to complain about everything. I'm just trying to understand why the company would release an update without posting any information about it anywhere. This is a little bewildering since the company had to battle bad press about the tablet just a short time ago.
It is pretty crazy how horrible this device is software wise from Viewsonic.
I bought mine last night from office depot and the FIRST time i booted it up, every application i clicked crashed and FC.
Mind you, this was my unboxing experience!
I have been reading alot on this forum for a week and with all the positive feedback everyone had with custom roms I bought this knowing I would load a custom rom.
I ended up with CM7 beta05 on it, and so far I am loving it. Have all the Google apps and Market up and running. I let it charge overnight and am going to mess with it some more.

I called them 3 times yesterday and there has been no update released to the masses since december. If you go to settings then about if it says enhancement pack you are not updated yet. My guess is tomorrow or the 31st.
Yeah, the 404 Error is because the link has "gTablet" not "gtablet" in it. I mentioned this to a customer service guy at ViewSonic probably 3 weeks ago. Just takes you to the Support page. The registration link is busted the same way. Good to see they are on top of things.
So which is it?!?!?!
A few people say there was an OTA update. Others (like in this thread say there hasn't been).
Some say the enhancement pack will prevent OTA from working. Others say the enhancement pack will NOT mess anything up.
wtf?
Personally, I think I'll wait until maybe after the end of January (since VS has been saying "January January January") to see if my Enhancement pack gets OTA'd. If not, I'll flash to the original ROM, and see if that gets OTA'd. And if not, then I'll say screw VS, and either jump on the TnTLite bandwagon or just get the TNT versions that Roebeet posts, because Roebeet is pretty awesome.
OTA 3588 popped up a couple of days ago, and my gtab downloaded it, and I installed it. Then I loaded vs 3 of the enhancements pack, redid flash, redid the market fix, etc.
Wwhat about Flash?
Viwsonic's web site says the January update was supposed to support Flash (OFFICIAL). Whatever happened to That update?
"Adobe Flash Support
The Viewsonic gTablet hardware fully supports the Adobe Flash Player. An automatic firmware update will offer gTablet users the option to install the Flash Player plug-in, pending Adobe Flash certification, targeted for the end of January, 2011."
TnT Enhancement 3.1.4b DOES block the Viewsonic Update!
I reverted to the stock 3389 (update-smb_a1002-3389-user) rom just now. It booted fine, then I ran the Updater and it immediately found 3588! So now I'm updating to that (and will of course install the enhancement pack).
So....even though the enhancement pack doesn't "block" the OTA updater from running, it certainly doesn't find you until it looks like a stock install.
ok...update is done....
So now in "About tablet", I get
Model - UPC300-2.2
Android OS - 2.2
Tap UI version - 1.1-3588
Kernel version - 2.6.32.9-0000-10.8.2-dirty, [email protected]#16
Build number FRF91
Notice any major changes?
well, nothing from the responsiveness end.
But I have to say that for some reason the wifi is a bit sketchy. It's an early assessment, but if it keeps it up, I'm jumping to TnT Lite. I probably didn't appreciate all the goodies tucked into the 3.1.4b enhancement pack (like the long-press home key task manager). I can only guess what's in store in Tnt Lite 4.
Makes you wonder what ViewSonic is doing with themselves....I'm only happy with my gTab because of what roebeet and rothnic and the crew have done.
BTW, for my fellow n00bs. The 3588 update alone will hide stuff in the Market because you need the build.prop "mahimahi" tweak to get access to things like "Thumb Keyboard" and "TV.com"

The problem with flash support is that Viewsonic and everyone else is dependent on Adobe issuing a "certified" Flash for each particular device. They are unable to release or include flash unless it is certified by Adobe. I agree they shouldn't be making promises on something they have no control over but in the end the fault lies with Adobe
In a perfect world adobe flash would slowly start languishing and dying off. Ufortunately it won't, so we're stuck with almost having to use it to browse anything. I'm about to try the new vanilla update as well just to see how it behaves.
The 3588 update just showed up on my tablet this morning. I did not see it before, when others reported it showing up. I guess then this is the 'official' version.
Any one else now seeing this update?

My g-tablet is "basically stock". That is I have it rooted, installed Android Market and Flash. I just needed to re-root and also uninstalled/reinstalled Flash. I redid flash because the system would shutdown (after update) when watching a Rovio Angry Birds "walkthrough" video.
I tried the beta flash download on VS favorites and that has worked fine in the last several days.
FWIW last Friday afternoon I asked Viewsonic customer support about the Web site updating. The short answer apparently is "the site maintenance is taken elsewhere and we have no control of the page contents."

Firmwares
Device overview
Teclast Master T10 is sold with two different device identifiers, E3C5 and E3C6. An user of this tablet can get the device identifier looking at the rear side of the tablet, there is a phrase including the device name, the device ID and the SN (serial number) of the device. An example is "T10 ID:E3C5 SN:XXXXXXXXXXXXXX", in this example the device ID is E3C5.
Firmware overview
Regarding the firmware, each device identifier is classified depending on the country the tablet is sold. So chinese people refer to E3C5 (device E3C5) and E3C6 (device E3C6) firmwares, while people outside China must refer to E3C5_G (device E3C5) and E3C6_G (device E3C6) firmwares - the "_G" (underscore G) suffix should mean "Global".
The difference between E3C5/E3C6 and E3C5_G/E3C6_G firmwares is due to the starting language of Android environment (chinese language for E3C5/E3C6, english language for E3C5_G/E3C6_G) and the additional chinese software (included only in E3C5/E3C6 firmwares).
Starting from year 2018, Teclast is pushing chinese firmwares (E3C5/E3C6) to have the TOS interface (a Phoenix OS-like environment), while for global firmwares (E3C5_G/E3C6_G) Teclast continues to provide with the standard Android environment.
Full Firmwares
Regarding the full firmware file (useful in case of downgrade of firmware or in case OTA doesn't properly work), Teclast provides the firmwares for chinese firmwares (E3C5/E3C6) and not-chinese firmwares (E3C5_G/E3C6_G) in two different official websites.
Chinese people may use the first official Teclast's website (http://www.teclast.com/tools/pad/pad.php?t=p) and input their own device identifier (E3C5 or E3C6) to get a list of available firmwares.
People outside China may use the second official Teclast's website (http://www.teclast.com/en/firmware/) and input their own device identifier (E3C5 or E3C6) to get a list of available firmwares.
For all firmwares not included in above-mentioned websites, users should ask to Teclast the full files for firmwares (providing the serial number of the device if requested), usually Teclast will provide you with a download link to a cloud service.
OTA Firmwares
Regarding the OTA firmware file (to be used only to update from the current firmware), the things become simpler. Teclast uses a method to get the internet address in order to download the single .ZIP file for upgrading the firmware. Teclast OTA app, included in all T10 units (E3C5,E3C6,E3C5_G,E3C6_G), search for the current firmware id (E3C5,E3C6,E3C5_G,E3C6_G). To get the proper file it computes:
ota.teclast.com/T10_[firmware_id]/update/
where [firmware_id] is the current firmware ID (E3C5, E3C6, E3C5_G, E3C6_G).
Inside the folder there is a file named "update.xml" used by Teclast OTA app in order to know the correct file to use to update the firmware.
So, summarizing all this matter, we have the following internet addresses :
E3C5 - http://ota.teclast.com/t10_e3c5/update/
E3C6 - http://ota.teclast.com/t10_e3c6/update/
E3C5_G - http://ota.teclast.com/t10_e3c5_g/update/
E3C6_G - http://ota.teclast.com/t10_e3c6_g/update/
Other Download sources
All Teclast users may download the firmware files also from NeedRom website (http://www.needrom.com/download/teclast-t10-e3c5/), but the files are mixed, so we have to search for the correct firmware number (in this website there is only the difference between E3C5 and E3C6 devices, not the classification about chinese or not-chinese firmwares).
Another source for downloading firmware files (both full and OTA files) is listed in post #437 of this thread.

Thanks, @italianquadcore for making this thread. I really appreciate it.
I've just purchased one last week. Still waiting for the shipment from China, and since many people have already complained about its malfunction everywhere (review websites, comments, videos, etc.) I knew I had to prepare to overcome those problems too.
I'll help you out when I get some new information. As for now, I'm still figuring out how to use this forum....
I have been experiencing some issues with my tablet. I have contacted Teclast via Facebook Messenger to see if they can resolve this issue. I purchased it from GeekBuying.com and they have yet to respond to any of my emails I have sent over the last few days. My issue: constant force closures. Once it starts, it won't stop until I reboot the tablet, and that only sometimes cures the issue. and when I say cure, I mean it works for another 5 minutes before it starts to crap out again. My issue seems to be a unique one since I have not seen any similar posts or complaints regarding this happening. Might be worthwhile to input what issue you are experiencing in this thread (if it is not already been mentioned), just so we can all be on the lookout for known bugs / issues. I started with v1.02, then OTA to v1.03 immediately after I first booted the tablet. I was immediately having issues, so I hopped on XDA and saw that I could flash other versions, one for the 'Chinese' (E3C5) and one for 'Global' (E3C5_G). No matter the version, I still have the same issue. Also, is anyone having NO issues at all with their tablet? (unfortunately for us, if you are not then you are probably not in this thread!)

It is possible that you have serious problem either in RAM memory modules or in eMMC storage.
Try this:
1) install app SD Insight (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.humanlogic.sdi&hl=it), open it, select "MMC Card" in dropbox, I have this:
Manufacturer = Hynix
Model : HCG8e
Size : 64 GB
Manufacturer Date : Aug 2016
What do you have?
2) Install the following 3 apps and try to run a benchmark for each app, just to see if eMMC or RAM are defective or not. Do they properly work? Do they run benchmarks without problems?
SD Card Test (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pzolee.sdcardtester)
A1 SD Bench (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.a1dev.sdbench)
Androbench (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.andromeda.androbench2)
3) Have you installed an external MicroSD? Eventually remove it.

Thanks for the help! However, once the crashes start i cannot open an app again until i factory reset (reboots doesn't even cure it).. then by the time i have anything installed i get the crashes again. Im just going to assume its hardware and have already contacted GeekBuying.com about a refund / replacement. Of course they are taking their sweet sweet time. So far the response has been "You can factory reset to solve the issue'.. lol. Think i just want a refund and then to purchase from GearBest.com
Expected mine to arrive tomorrow. Luckily, that's before Christmas Eve (since in my country there won't be any shipping activity on holiday).
By the way, is there anyone here who officially got a global firmware in packaging? I've seen some people do the unboxing and have confirmed no Chinese apps (except Teclast ones) at first light. Just my curiousity.

When I received the tablet, inside there was firmware v1.23, with only the 3 Teclast apps (TeclastOTA, Teclast Manager and AppLock). After upgrading to v1.31, I faced some issues with touchscreen due to ghost touch. I reverted back to v1.28 using NeedRom full firmware file, and I discovered that not only there were the 3 above-mentioned apps, but there were other 5 chinese apps that I simply removed using the following adb commands:
adb uninstall com.sohu.tv
adb uninstall com.UCMobile
adb uninstall cn.ninegame.gamemanager
adb uninstall com.pp.assistant
adb uninstall cn.kuwo.kwmusichd
These 5 chinese apps are located in folder /system/preinstall - so we can eventually reinstall them if we need them.

So..., those apps were not depending on which firmware it had back on, right? Ah, I forgot to mention those ones I mentioned also had English interface (including settings) initially.
Btw, why did you change back to v1.28 instead of v1.03(G)? Is something wrong with the latter even the fact that it's much bloatless?
Speaking of adb, I did use that tool intensely through Windows cmd (don't know how to use it directly). It truly comes in handy when trying to remove lots of bloatware on my budget phone (which is... Samsung), but then I realized it only removed files from user data, not the apk itself. So, when I did a factory reset once, those bloatware apps came back to life. Since knowing the fact, I've never touched that tool again (as it also has been rooted, anyway).

V1.28 and other releases come with Chinese language, while v1.03 comes with English language.
I reverted back to v1.28 because there's not an official support for v1.03 and e3c5_g device, this firmware remains in the hands of Teclast technical support, only Teclast itself provides a link of the full .zip firmware. What about the future of e3c5_g series of firmware? Only Teclast knows....
Those 5 apps are really uninstalled, but logically they are installed again after a factory reset because that folder /system/preinstall is used by Android to install Oem software (really a no-sense with stock Android).

I don't really get how Android operates..., but yeah. As long as they're still in system folder, they will come back again (after factory reset) automatically.
In the meanwhile.... My tablet has just arrived!! XD
---
I just recently switched it on, and when I check the build number on settings..., it turned out to be v1.02(G).
Which means I can't test out today's new update (v1.32) for now. ._.
