Why should I use Dialer One? - EVO 4G Themes and Apps

Okay, so I have installed and uninstalled Dialer One more times than I can remember. Everytime I migrate over to an ASOP rom I get reminded in a thread that the stock dialer can be upgraded easily upgraded to Dialer One. This is one of the common replies to sense lovers complaining about ASOP.
I don't get it, why is it better than the Froyo dialer? It seems to be pretty much the same layout... am I missing something? The only differences I can find are the ability to change colors and themes.
Anyone want to chime in on why they have to have Dialer One?

Basic stock dialer doesnt have whats called "Smart Dial" basically, doesnt have the "type name" and get the number quick feature like Dialer One does, or Sense for that matter.
I think I explained that right... lol

It has predictive dialing so you don't have to remember numbers.

This, for me is essential. I still use it on sense just because I like how it looks and the white dialer buttons are so bright sometimes, and I'm too lazy to theme it.

HTC_IME for Nexus One [Pixelated Version]

http://drop.io/p12auxn#
I'm not 100% sure this is it since I don't have my Nexus One yet so I need someone willing to test.
I found it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dFh9RKsN6w&feature=player_embedded
This is the same one that's pixelated on the Nexus One. Also, doesn't stretch the full screen in landscape mode.
It is still the pixelated version. That wouldn't even bother me that much if the correction bar on the top fit on the screen and wasn't horribly warped.
Damn sorry then. The one in the video looks good though.
do you need to be rooted for this? Because I tried it using an appinstaller. It shows up in the clicker, but when I create new messages, it reverts back to the stock google keyboard.
You have to go into the settings and enable it, then when you're in a message box click the box and hold, then select "input method". You can alternate between the 2.
haha ya i forgot to do the "hold" part in the message box. thanks!
pixelated...but at least i don't have to switch back n forth for numbers and punctuations. can't wait for the non-pixelated version w/ microphone key =)

We'll need a high-res 2.1 SenseUI device to come out - probably need to wait for a Bravo leak.
Yep, works fine on N1 running MCR1.1 but pixelated. Will have to live with that for a while as it still beats the hell out of the standard Android keyboard...
Is the file linked from youtube the same as this file?

So I emailed HTC to find out if they will update the htc_ime.apk so that it will work on the nexus or look properly I should say. I am currently waiting for a response... let you guys know when I get a reply. I will post it.

Ha good luck with that. They won't update it until they release a phone with the Hi-Res Sense UI.
Most likely we'll have to wait until a bravo dump is leaked or another sense UI device w/ a hi res screen's dump is leaked.
I'm running HTC_IME on the N1.... its great to have it back, only complaint is the lack of the dedicated 'microphone' key thats in the default keyboard... so AFAIK once you install HTC_IME you can NOT dictate text messages and the like
Does anyone know how to edit the dictionary for htc ime?
I don't know about editing words but you can erase it by going into your settings > applications > keyboard > clear data.
I installed this and it works great but my only issue-request would be to add more languages. The option is there, when you go to settings from inside the keyboard, but unfortunately, only english is available.
In the past, people have made language packs...could someone do on for this? pleeeeeeeease?
Thanks,
Lou
I used to change com.htc.android.htcime_preferences.xml file to enable dual language on my htc ime. I was wondering if this can be changed in the apk before installing. I dont want to root my nexus.
Thanks
Anyone have any idea what that task killer widget is he uses in the video? Basically its sitting on the homescreen and kills the tasks with one click, no need to open an app...

2.1 Messaging App Facebook Status on Froyo

Hey all,
I really liked the fact that i could see the facebook status of the person that i was texting at the top of the thread in 2.1. Is there anyway that you could get that same functionality in Froyo?
haha i just noticed its not there! LOL nice catch. Bump to this
i still have it
Would porting the messaging app from 2.1 to 2.2 be the only way we could do this? Would this even be possible? Because i know a lot of people use Handcent but the reason i dont use it is because i like being able to see the persons most recent facebook status at the top of my thread

I hate the new messaging app. So cluttered and messy with pictures for EACH message. Not to mention the gray box for me!

It's a gray box for you because your sim doesn't list your number. If you see your number under Settings -> About -> Status. If it lists your number under My Number you can just add yourself as a contact with a picture and it will show up. Otherwise there are some phones that allow you to add the number. I personally used a simcard-reader/writer for my computer.
Yeah i have seen the messanging app on my freinds phone and i dont really mind the fact that there is a picture for each message, but I would really miss seeing the persons most recent facebook status because I might not necessarily see thier status on my news feed. The lack facebook status on the messanging app is the only reason I havent flashed the froyo test build

Idk maybe some info on a possible backport? The new messanging app is not as clean as the old one in my opinion

I know, but thanks for your help. I had to use an old SE phone to change my SIM number. But seriously this is a really large oversight on Google's part. Like I am suppose to make a contact of myself just so I can have a picture there?? That's ridiculous.
Is also like this. Much prefer the messaging app from cyanogenmod /:

No it's not and I've been making self contacts on my phones for the better part of a decade.
You people ***** about the stupidest things lol.
Well my friend tried yesterday to simply uninstall the 2.2 messanging app and to simply install the 2.1 APK using ASTRO and it failed to install. Im not sure if pushing with ADB will work but just trying to simply delete and install definitely didnt work

CM6 dialer

I'm wondering what is everyone using since the cm6 dialer doesn't search contacts as you type their name in T9 format. Or is there a setting I'm missing.

Dialer one off the market has all of those sense features
Yeah, I've tried it but it's slow and doesn't have any of the tabs on top like call log, contacts, favorites.
I'm not sure why the developer didn't choose to replace the default dialer with his and instead added a dialer. This creates a problem because after dialing and conversation is over the default dialer is shown.
I started this thread thinking the CM6 developer responsible for dialer app would take this as a request to the default dialer if anything.
Can we install the old sense dialer if we have the apk or will it not work since it isn't a sense rom?
I usually just hit the search button once I open the dialer to find the contact I'm looking for.
And as for returning to the dialer after a call, there is a setting in the preferences for this. There's also a setting in the main call settings for returning to the call log after a call.

It won't work: no sense apps will work on AOSP since there's not HTC framework.

turn off the "Display contacts photo" setting and that should take care of the slowness. it doesn't have tabs at the top, but you can swipe left and right on the list to change views.

Thanks, that helped with the speed I didn't know about the swiping either.
What about the buttons. Don't you guys find them to be too much against each other? I like the default dialer better. It "seems" like you are less likely to hot the wrong key.

[Q] Dialer contact search

Hi, I can't find a way to search contacts while typing their name or number in the stock dialer.
I mean, if I type the first two digits of my gf number in my old i5500, it showed her name. Is it possible on this device to do the same, without resorting to external apps (like I'm doing right now with aContacts)?
Thanks.
My Nexus S, for your info, is a i9023 SCLCD, rooted, using NSCollab.
There are few dialer apps on the market that do this. Dialer one, Go Contacts and dialer 2 are 3 that I have used. Also do a search for T9 Dialer. Enjoy, cheers.

I'm using aContacts, I was just wondering if it was possibile to do this in the stock dialer, or there was a modded dialer apk, who knows
Sorry I did it but I guess I read it too quickly or you edited it while I was typing. Hope you find an answer.

No problem Thanks for the help anyway!
You can hit the search key when on the contacts tab, but that's as close as you'll get without using a 3rd party app.
I see. That's funny, because a low-end phone like the i5500 had this really useful feature integrated in the OS. Go figure.
Yeah, I don't get it either.
I've become quite fond of GO Contacts, though.
I just tried mydialer, it is smokin fast. I like go as well. Bummer that GB doesn't have this as stock.
Go Contacts is better than aContacts, thanks It's even better than default contacts

stock sensation dialer/contacts - garbage

is it just me or is it complete crap?
to look up a number in contacts requires several screens/button pushes - this is majorly annoying
once a call is connected you have to hit a button to then hit the speaker - why not put that on the connected call screen?
slow
laggy
i came from a n1 with cm7 on it.

dude you must be high if you go in the app drawer there is a contacts icon thats it not seven screens, and if you in the dialer just hit menu at the bottom and theres a peoples icon with all your contacts not seven screens. you obviously dont know how to use the phone lol......also you can turn speaker on before the call even connects wich is also on the connected call screen
Also you can just go to phone and start typing the person's name.
So 326 would bring up all starting with "dan"
If you don't want to call the primary number just tap the contact details icon then tap the other number you want.
It's probably the best dialer I've used, so quick and easy.

Try touch pal dialer from market. It is much better, and free.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.cootek.smartdialer&feature=search_result
It's the best dialer I've ever used, and so is the People app Love it. This is why I love Sense. Dunno what drugs you've taken
Nah, i'm in the same boat as the OP.
the n1 dialer was better, more efficient. The sense dialer has too much to scroll through.
Maybe after I get used to it , it will get better.

You SCROLL through the dialer? Why?
This thread is so funny to me because I use the Sense UI for the dialer alone, it is superior to the AOSP dialer in every way.
Indeed this dialer is a much requested feature in other roms. Haven't used a faster one, and I came from cm7
There's absolutely 0 reason to ever scroll through anything in it

Exactly.. I don't know how much easier it can get than opening the dialer and hitting the first letter or 2 of the persons name you are calling...
Every stock ROM I use I always download TouchPal dialer because of it's sense-like features. I hate having to scroll through the contacts to find the person i'm trying to call with the stock dialer.
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA App

Well don't
Ok say you prefer the people app to the dialer, once it's open, select the search bar at the top and tap out the first few letters of the contact you want, select it from the list and dial from there.
No scrolling.
Or just get used to using the phone dialer as you're meant to. The people app is really meant for managing contacts.

I hate the sense dialer/contacts also and prefer the AOSP version however with either dialer you can just type the person's name and the contact will appear....scrolling is for old people....

I agree with you. Though for me, it's not the dialer...it's the seemingly random way that the phone will store a saved number...sometimes to the phone, sometimes to the SIM, and sometimes completely hidden and not able to be found until you start manually typing a number into the dialer, at which time it shows you that it *does* know the contact you're trying to reach, it just won't let you find it any other way.
Then there's the joy of syncing, especially with multiple gmail accounts, and having 3-4-5 copies of the SAME CONTACT and having to manually delete them all. I think my monochrome Nokia 3310 had a better contact interface.
