is it just me or is it complete crap?
to look up a number in contacts requires several screens/button pushes - this is majorly annoying
once a call is connected you have to hit a button to then hit the speaker - why not put that on the connected call screen?
slow
laggy
i came from a n1 with cm7 on it.

dude you must be high if you go in the app drawer there is a contacts icon thats it not seven screens, and if you in the dialer just hit menu at the bottom and theres a peoples icon with all your contacts not seven screens. you obviously dont know how to use the phone lol......also you can turn speaker on before the call even connects wich is also on the connected call screen
Also you can just go to phone and start typing the person's name.
So 326 would bring up all starting with "dan"
If you don't want to call the primary number just tap the contact details icon then tap the other number you want.
It's probably the best dialer I've used, so quick and easy.

Try touch pal dialer from market. It is much better, and free.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.cootek.smartdialer&feature=search_result
It's the best dialer I've ever used, and so is the People app Love it. This is why I love Sense. Dunno what drugs you've taken
Nah, i'm in the same boat as the OP.
the n1 dialer was better, more efficient. The sense dialer has too much to scroll through.
Maybe after I get used to it , it will get better.

You SCROLL through the dialer? Why?
This thread is so funny to me because I use the Sense UI for the dialer alone, it is superior to the AOSP dialer in every way.
Indeed this dialer is a much requested feature in other roms. Haven't used a faster one, and I came from cm7
There's absolutely 0 reason to ever scroll through anything in it

Exactly.. I don't know how much easier it can get than opening the dialer and hitting the first letter or 2 of the persons name you are calling...
Every stock ROM I use I always download TouchPal dialer because of it's sense-like features. I hate having to scroll through the contacts to find the person i'm trying to call with the stock dialer.

I love the Sense dialer/contact apps. I wish those and the sense lockscreen will be ported to CM7 when it is released.

Well don't
Ok say you prefer the people app to the dialer, once it's open, select the search bar at the top and tap out the first few letters of the contact you want, select it from the list and dial from there.
No scrolling.
Or just get used to using the phone dialer as you're meant to. The people app is really meant for managing contacts.

I hate the sense dialer/contacts also and prefer the AOSP version however with either dialer you can just type the person's name and the contact will appear....scrolling is for old people....

I agree with you. Though for me, it's not the dialer...it's the seemingly random way that the phone will store a saved number...sometimes to the phone, sometimes to the SIM, and sometimes completely hidden and not able to be found until you start manually typing a number into the dialer, at which time it shows you that it *does* know the contact you're trying to reach, it just won't let you find it any other way.
Then there's the joy of syncing, especially with multiple gmail accounts, and having 3-4-5 copies of the SAME CONTACT and having to manually delete them all. I think my monochrome Nokia 3310 had a better contact interface.

I used to use "Speed dial" on my Mytouch and I have tried it. I also tried the native "direct call" shortcut and they are too small to see.
My phone freaked out and went on the fritz. I go a new one today and that whole "back up my apps" thing didn't work.
I HAD an app on the N1 that let me put like a 2x2 widget/icon on the home screen and when you pushed it it said "Call, Message,Email, etc". I cannot for the life of me find this in the Market. any ideas?
Thanks in advance!
P.S. Any cut only makes 1x1 icons as well.
..can´t help you, but I would like to have that too - a nice speed dial app for N1
Bump. Anyone have any ideas?
The easiest way to speed dial, is to create shortcuts on the desktop for specific contact phones - the shortcut will also get the contact's image and name, so it easy to work with.
Then, one click, and it calls the contact, without any extra menus/questions.

Please re-read my post. I am currently using that method, but on the Nexus one the icons are so small because of the resolution of the screen. It makes them very hard to see. I am looking for a 2x2 option instead of the default 1x1. Thank you for your reply!
try NubDial from the market.
i am using that on my N1.
Thanks. Looks cool, but not exactly what I'm after.
I personally love the speeddial function in acontacts, but if you already found what you're looking for then that's good. Still, 2x2 on your homescreen is huge
2 x 2 isn't huge on the Nexus. I think it is the resolution. I had one I was using and my first Nexus one crapped out. I sent it back and Android did not back up all of my apps as had hoped so...no gotta. but still, I haven't found one.
Anyone?
Found an app called "Quickdial". Pretty close to what I wanted. I just wish I could make each contact a link or it operated as a widget. Cool app though.
Old School Speed Dialer
You could also try Old School Speed Dialer. With it, you speed dial by just bringing up the dialer, entering the speed dial shortcut number, then hitting call. Saves on home screen space.

We just released a speed dial widget, Sign. Sign will let you you call or text any of your contacts by simply drawing a gesture (signing) directly from your home screen. It also prevents misdials/incidental calls which are more prevalent with direct dial icons. There's more information here.
Anyways, give it a shot and let us know what you think.
Speed Dial in market from CRinUS makes a larger icon you might be able to see. Kinda blurry if you look at it up close though
Hello chaps
I've just got an HTC Legend and love pretty well everything about it ...except...
The SMS side of things is awful - you access it via the "Messages" widget, not sure if this is a native Android app or an HTC add-on but it's rubbish. All you get is a list of messages you've sent and received with no indication as to which is which and messages from the same person are bunched together into one on the list - it's just awful and there seems to be no way to change it so just an "inbox" view or whatever.
In addition, when you compose an SMSthe text entry box statys tiny and docks at the bottom so yuo get the recipient at the top and the message at the bottom with a big space in between unless the message is really long.
I'm amazed how bad it all is. Is there a good market replacement for it?
Cheers
K
Check out Handcent. Not only does it make the list more similar to an iPhone-esque style, but adds a bunch of extra features like colored trackball alert if you're rooted, or a Quick Reply function, where you can quickly send a message to anyone using your hardware buttons.
Is this some kind of joke!? April 1st has passed!

Yeah, It should just be a matter of going into the stock Messaging app. On the main screen that shows all your threads, press menu, go to Options/Settings (whichever one is there, cba to look at my phone at the moment) then just disable notifications. That means it should never bother you again (unless you want it to - in which case just re-enable that)
I'm wondering what is everyone using since the cm6 dialer doesn't search contacts as you type their name in T9 format. Or is there a setting I'm missing.

Dialer one off the market has all of those sense features
Yeah, I've tried it but it's slow and doesn't have any of the tabs on top like call log, contacts, favorites.
I'm not sure why the developer didn't choose to replace the default dialer with his and instead added a dialer. This creates a problem because after dialing and conversation is over the default dialer is shown.
I started this thread thinking the CM6 developer responsible for dialer app would take this as a request to the default dialer if anything.
Can we install the old sense dialer if we have the apk or will it not work since it isn't a sense rom?
I usually just hit the search button once I open the dialer to find the contact I'm looking for.
And as for returning to the dialer after a call, there is a setting in the preferences for this. There's also a setting in the main call settings for returning to the call log after a call.

turn off the "Display contacts photo" setting and that should take care of the slowness. it doesn't have tabs at the top, but you can swipe left and right on the list to change views.

What about the buttons. Don't you guys find them to be too much against each other? I like the default dialer better. It "seems" like you are less likely to hot the wrong key.

Check the market for it. It's all kinds of awesome. Ignore the fact that the market description is in Chinese, it's very cool.
Been using Youlou since upgrading to 2.1 a few weeks ago. I must say it's a really slick address book.
this is way faster then stock froyo address book ...just missing option to create shortcut for direct dialer
looks good. i think i will try this one
How can I use this app as default dialer? I need it because I want to see the counter for missed calls?
I love this app too. The widget shows missed calls BTW the widget is awesome.

It's frustrating, this app.
It's rad, the UI looks awesome. It pretends to be so functional... But it's so far from it.
No * or # key, really? I get that it's chinese, but come on. How many users have to request it in the comments before you just add the damn things?
I don't want to have to add a widget to homescreen. There isn't room for it. Make the app fully functional without it (aka show missed calls).
Doesn't sync with facebook.
Doesn't thread together contacts (like say if you had a regular phone and a google voice phone already in your contacts... in the default I can just thread the two together, in Youlu I have to delete one and then add the other to the contact manually)
Pictures are sometimes there for my favs, sometimes not. I even re add a picture or change the picture. It sometimes takes the app opening closing like 5 times before it appears, and then it can leave just as easily.
After all that I'm still struggling to remove it from my phone, but being realistic, this thing isn't a dialer. It's just not. It's a cool UI that pretends to be one, while missing a half a dozen key components.
Sometimes I wonder if the stock dialer was something that was actually ****ty, and then the current stock dialer came out with a hip name and was third party, how crazy would people go for that? It has everything.

I have no choice but to completely agree irish22022 it's a very nice looking UI and I enjoyed it quite a lot until I was trying to get in touch with customer service (*611) or check the balance on my phone (#BAL) it's extremely frustrating to be missing these two key digits, almost a showstopper however I keep using it hoping they will eventually add what we need. As far as for only allowing one account that doesn't bother me so much because I have all of my contacts backed up to one Google account which only made sense to me, so that doesn't bother me so much. However the * and # issue really needs to be corrected.

you can open the sms client in the app drawer that appears after installation, go to settings, and disable everything.
It's still ridiculous that they install that on your computer along with the address book. Should definitely be a seperate app.

are you at least in the sms client? it looks nothing like the phone book. If it's not in your app drawer, open up the dialer, go to contacts, click on a contact, and click the envelope rather then the dialer (if you don't see the envelope, then go to settings and look for the option to include a text shortcut for your contacts). This defaults to youlu's sms client. From there, hit the menu button, click settings and disable notifications.
You can't uninstall the sms app, but you can silence it so you don't know it's there. And you also can't change the default sms app within youlu phone book, it will always open up their sms app.

I'm posting here because this community might share these concerns
HTC One S
Edit: Device is Stock, ICS Sense 4
Carrier: Virgin Mobile Canada
As most reports, its best to start with praise, but since I don’t want to make this long, I’m just going point of the negatives (sorry htc).
Hands down this is the best phone I have every used. Aside from a few learning curves, I have successfully transitioned into the android environment with minimal setbacks. I'm honestly very impressed with how good the user experience is.
FACEBOOK Widgets doesn't show latest posts (fail)
A good example is the Facebook widget. The widget will only show posts hours old unless I open the Facebook app and refresh the news feed. This defeats the purpose of having a widget for quick access to information. The widget doesn’t update in real-time (notifications are not pushed) and the interval to check for updates seems very sparse.
Browser menu does not always appear (Landscape mode) (fail/concern)
When you scroll you sometimes get the menus to appear (they slide in from top and bottom), others times it does not appear. Sometimes when you scroll fast, or slow. It seems to appear whenever it feels like it, making it difficult to get to the menu when you want. Though, I can always scroll to the top of the page.
edit: see it in action here: youtube. com/ watch?v=hSYRYCO5ytU#t=08m20s thanks moonrock
Message notifications (concern)
I really like the notification tray at the top of the screen, it provides information about downloads, pending transactions, new messages, etc., I use multiple chat clients (gchat, whats app, yahoo, sms). It would be nice if a new message would stay at the top for a few seconds so I can click it and immediately switch to it, instead of having to go home> swipe down> select message.
edit: I can just swipe, no need to go home first (unless it's full screen app). thanks edscholl
Indication LED (concern)
The flashing led works fine, but since it is embedded deep into the shell of the phone, you will not see it when its sitting away from you at an angle. I understand its to keep the phone sleek, and its something to adapt to.
Dropbox sync (concern)
The Dropbox app includes the option ‘Turn on Camera Upload’. This works great! The problem is, if I delete a photo from my Dropbox, it remains on my phone, and vice versa. So they are not in sync, and I can't find a solution.
edit: I tried Dropsync, and picked up the pro version to sync multiple folders. Sense 4 stores multiple files per image (thumbnails, preview, actual picture) in a series of folders. Deleting the files doesn't update Sense 4's image library... Great tool non the less! thanks pbelcomp
Vibrating touch (concern)
This is a really cool feature to provide tactile feedback, and it works very well! I have had it enabled for the keyboard, and I’m concerned that it may be hard on the motor or rattle the phone. Each keypress causes vibration. When typing a long messages, the vibrate will go on/off as long as I type. I’m sure this causes wear that is not necessary? Just a concern if its OK to use like this.
Home screen widget real estate (4x4 virtual grid) – would like to see 5x5? (concern)
With the screen resolution becoming higher, and screen size larger, it would be nice to have more room for icons and widgets.
edit: there are 3rd party apps that help with this (Apex, LauncherPro), thanks moonrock
Display quality (praise):
I first had issues with the jaggyness of small print, enough that I was worried it was going to be a problem and give me headaches. The fact that if you look closely, you can see as what I describe as ‘space between the pixels’, which is caused by the PenTile subpixel pattern. Example found here:
After using the phone for a few days, I’ve actually come to appreciate this feature. I’ve noticed the screen has become much easier on the eyes and extended use is very pleasing. I really like it!
Task switching (suggestion)
Yes there is a dedicated app switching button, but the smooth scroll and inertia makes it difficult to select the app you want (especially if your choice is right beside your current app, you need to slow down and get it just right). I suggest limiting inertia to slow swipes. Also maybe in the future, a shortcut to switch back to the previous app, a 3 finger swipe could switch back-forth between background apps.
Camera (suggestion)
This thing is brilliant! Only feedback would be to preserve the existing chosen effect. If I want all my pictures to have ‘vintage cold’, When I quit the camera and go back, it resets to ‘no effect’. Maybe this is a feature not sure.
Last but not least,
Menu: Keyboard click sound (suggestion)
Looking for sound ‘click’ when typing on keyboard. Is not in settings>SOUND, rather I found it in: Language & Keyboard > HTC Sense Input. Not a big deal, just a suggestion to include it in ‘settings>sound’ under ‘system’.

Hm, I see what you mean re: the browser via this video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSYRYCO5ytU (browser is at 7:35-ish)
You could also try a new browser (ex: Chrome) if you don't like how the built in one doesn't work how you like. Another "solution" would be to pinch to zoom out to quickly be able to get back up to the top.

Thank you!
"Widgets don’t update (fail)[/B]
A good example is the Facebook widget. The widget will only show posts hours old unless I open the Facebook app and refresh the news feed. This defeats the purpose of having a widget for quick access to information. The widget doesn’t update in real-time (notifications are not pushed) and the interval to check for updates seems very sparse. "
Have you synced your Facebook in accounts? I am running custom rom (Zero One S 2.0) and FB and widgets sync fine.

Interesting, I have since added the widget again, yes facebook is enabled in Accounts, and freshly synced. Facebook app is freshly updated, and friendsteam app is freshly updated, and the widget will not show the latest post. infact it keeps returning to an older post (4 hours ago) (2 posts ago it seems). I don't know why, can't tell why.

Same problem...tried everything to get it to sync normally. Only uninstalling updates and clearing data and cache seem to work as this returns to stock fb setting. Then issues with contact images not loading. Also tried disabling sense app and running only market version.
Mine is also updated and last sync is 21 hours old for the widget. I also tried a fresh authorization from fb with HTC sense and nothing.
It does not update even if I force fb to refresh or force sync under accounts.
I have since wasted enough time on it..now that Facebook is going to build a phone with HTC, hopefully they can get sense to work as it should with fb updates installed. You are not alone..Google sense and fb for more info.
It just don't work right..still awesome phone though!
Lol reading the OP made me all nostalgic thinking about the first time I used my Android phone back in the G1 days. Things were tougher then. We had no on screen keyboard, no dock shortcuts, Facebook app still sucked, and had to walk uphill in the snow both ways. But it was still the greatest phone I'd ever had
