Tmobile Dash/HTC s620 Help - General Questions and Answers

I have a Tmobile Dash with the software version 1.22.531.8 I had the excalibur softare on it but i downgraded because I lost the instant messaging App because that is the only way i can get on aim. I dont have the data plan but i have unlimited text so using instant messaging is not a problem. And I also need SDHC support for my 4gb micro sd. Here is where the problem comes in. If I keep the software i had I keep instant messaging but no sdhc support. But if I update it. I lose Instant messaging but have SDHC support. I need both. And using WIFI for Aim is not an option i need it for when i go out. The instant messaging app dosent require it bc it charges to your text messaging but since i have unlimited it isnt a problem. So can some one help me. Is there a rom/update for the tmobile dash that does both

add
OR if anyone has a away i can get instant messaging on newer updates or how i can get sdhc support on older version that have instant messaging

US MSN Phone hack - where to get ?

I think I had found in this forum a thread on howto use the built in msn client of a us phone with a foreign simcard (doesnt work normally because tmobile sends this messages via sms and charges you I think).
I searched now for 30 minutes and I cant find the thread anymore, or the page where the modification was described (it works, I have done it one my phone, then it sends messages via data). Any help from you ? Perhaps someone knows the website ?
Thanks
Hate to break this to you, but the built in MSN client uses WIFI.... or the built in data plan.... there shouldn't be anything regarding SMS I think? I could be totally wrong though....
But I have it working without the SMS function....
Aism
meeker, you are right, the msn client does not use messaging.

It seems that when using a non-T-Mobile SIM card, the built-in MSN client wouldn't work, giving a strange message saying it cannot read the phone number from the SIM card, and refuse to sign in to the server.
I'd love to know if anyone has a solution to this as I sometimes need to use IM over EDGE/GPRS when I am on the road.

Update: I think I found the link with information about a solution.

@Keyser.Soze
Many many thanks for the link, that was exactly what I tried to find. Again: Thank you !
Happy new year !
I have tried to follow the instructions featured in this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-452364.html
However, when I tried to use the command "cat /sdcard/IM.odex > /system/app/IM.odex"
The system will give me an error message: "write : no space left on device"]
I am using the modded RC30 firmware version 1.2 and would appreciate it if anyone can give me some advice on this. Thanks in advance!
KS
Strange, worked here.
did you remove the usb cord as told in the manual ? Dont know if that can be the reason....
I have a tmobile sim card but without the specific g1 data plan..and I have the same issue. Also I don't have a g1 with root permissions but only factory R30 firmware.
So no solutions for me?lol
Thanks Christian
hi
are you guys sure that t-mobile dont use messaging when sending messages in msn messenger?
because i had the unlimited data plan and 400 txt messages before and everytime i use msn messenger i checked online for the txt messages used and i had the exact amount left that i used on msn messenger
but only in msn messenger, yahoo and aol, not on the gtalk app.
so i had to switch to unlimited txt messages .

if you have a g1 plan then it should not be using text messaging, the text messaging MSN messenger program itself hasnt been installed on devices for quite some time.

I found out what the problem was and it was that /system ran out of free space. After re-flashing to the modded RC8 firmware, I had some free space and was able to copy IM.odex to /system/app. However, after rebooting when I tried to launch IM, it will just go back to the desktop after a couple of seconds. I will try to download the modified IM.odex again and see if I had a corrupted one by accident...

Any luck installing it? Did you tried with RC8 Jesusfreke v1.3?

I updated to v1.3 today and I noticed that there's more free space in /system. I was able to copy IM.odex to /system/app but after reboot I still get the same result: the IM program won't launch now and will throw me back to the desktop in a second. Don't know what's wrong...
Hmm, i wonder if we can get in contact with the original poster... he didnt really describe how he made/patched IM.odex to make it work. Perhaps its a version problem atm?
MSN does use txt messages just got my bill for 160$ i had the g1 unlimited data plan with 400 txt msgs
should i call t-mobile?
Just tried this myself and its not working for me either.
Currently using JF's RC8 and it just starts to open the IM app then closes and goes back to the home straight away... would really like to get this working.

I'm in Canada, and my Phone has never touched T-mobile's networks.... (SP1 here, Activated by forcing Wifi) That said, I haven't had any problems with it, nor have I had SMS messages being used? That said, I don't have a data plan so I only connect by Wifi..... soooo your experiences may vary?
Meeker
I was having the same issue before and I just tried this fix and it worked perfectly. I have JF mod30 v1.3 installed and now I can log into msn fine.
But there is a reason that people are using rc8 instead of rc30... (because they dont want myfaves $$$)
Did anyone tried this hack on the ADP1?
I am pretty certain that the built in MSN client will work over WiFi, but not over a cellular IP data connection (GPRS, 3G etc).
I'm in the UK and I have an unlocked US device. When connected via WiFi, the MSN client will log in and work correctly, but if I disconnect from the WiFi network it will complain that it cannot read the phone number from my UK sim card.
Therefore, I believe that it designed to use SMS messages when it cannot connect via WiFi so that the operators can derive some revenue from it.

Dave

Java SMS/text-based Instant messenger (no data internet gprs wap wifi) for F700

Hello,
I have a Samsung F700 and I have a plan with unlimited sms/mms messaging but no data whatsoever, so I am searching for an instant messenger that functions through sms only. Any help would be appreciated, whether you can tell me where to download it and how to install it or names of programs or if there is a name for these types of messengers
does anyone know about a program called OZ? supposedly it uses sms (but possibly also uses data for some functions?) i read somewhere that att uses a att-branded version of it? would this work? where would I get it?
Thank you!
I have t-mobile if that helps

Does MSN Live Messenger use internet or SMS?

Greetings,
When I purchased my ADP1 for here in Australia I was disappointed at first that the IM client did not come with MSN/Windows Live Messenger like it's T-Mobile G1 bretheren. But I was less upset when I read that the MSN client actually sends SMS's instead of using the internet. Unfortunately I can't find any post confirming/denying this!?
Can someone please confirm this if it is true? Because the JFv1.41 with RC33 installed on my ADP1 has it available under IM, and although somewhat slow to load up (I do have many contacts) it looks/feels as though its on the internet... I am still paranoid I will end up with a bill for thousands of dollars due to SMS's overseas to T-Mobile.
Cheers
Leon
PS. And for that matter can someone also confirm AIM and Yahoo! is not sending via SMS but rather internet? It may seem silly, but peace of mind for many I'm sure.
- bump -
here is the answer...
from how I get charged, i honestly can see that it is BOTH text message and data because u need data/internet to access those messenger services and each message u enter in msn live or aim counts as a text message.
thankfully for me, i have family unlimited texting and internet/data plan for my phone... but those messenger usually lags unless u are on 3G or some better connection.
Is that for RC30 and RC8 or just RC30? I thought it just used data.

The Y! and AIM apps have always been through SMS on TMo builds for all of their phones. I've heard conflicting reports about MSN though but I would put money on the bulk of it being through SMS. Honestly though, IM through SMS is terrible and has been for years. It's laggy, never up to date and loves to double and triple sends messages. It's the price you pay for not having a data plan.
I know palringo is working on a android app. it is in beta now, they use data only.

Joking aside they do have a solid product but at this point I'm just tired of waiting indefinitely. Although, as a G1 owner I should be used to this by now.
Who cares, you should have unlimited data and messaging when using the G1 anyways.

Do you know anything about Australian cellular providers or the OP? No? I didn't think so. If you have nothing to add then move on without brain vomiting on the Post button.
Do I get that right: Every IM messenger from market sends out sms instead of data messages as it normally should? So Hello AIM, Membo IM etc. too?
no the g1 built in IM program uses SMS. Hello AIM uses the internet connection.
Oh, thank god. I was confused by this "The Y! and AIM apps have always been through SMS on TMo builds for all of their phones"....
Thx!

with the g1 plan you get unlimited data, and I think 400 messaging. Or people like myself who dont use the g1 plan have unlimited data, and no messaging but still use t-mobile.
I'm on JF 1.41 RC8 and I just used my prepaid sim in my G1 and chatted on msn for a bit then sent 1 text messages afterwards.
It only deducted the credit for my 1 sms afterwards so I'm fairly confident the IM app (at least Live Messenger) just uses data.
You can use all messengers (aol, icq, msn etc) through standard gtalk application. Just configure jabber transport from other network to gtalk server. Instructions can be googled easily (here an example: http://www.bigblueball.com/forums/general-other-im-news/33739-connect-google-talk-aim-msn-yahoo.html)
Live Messenger Problem
Running the latest JesusFreke RC8 update, with the extra IM clients built into it, and I am receiving the following error when I try to sign into Live Messenger:
Unable to sign into the MSN service. Please try again later.
(Detail: Sorry, the phone number cannot be read from your sim card. Please contact your operator for help).
I have the phone on a T-Mobile contract, and I ported my number over from another network when I got the phone.
Any ideas on what could cause this problem?
Someone on another forum said they could only get live messenger to work while on wifi. Dont know if that helps.
Are you using the stock im apps? They use sms texts to send not data. This might be the problem you are having.
Yes, I am using the stock IM apps. Are there better alternatives?

Is there something I can use to buy SMS credits and send via 3G instead of GSM SMS?

Hi All
Basically, im after an application which allows me to send SMS through 3g, rather than clocking up SMS 's on my mobile bill.
I dont mind paying for them, e.g. via a 3rd party website by purchasing sms credits in bulk, but i just want to be able to send SMS's via the Internet
Windows Mobile platform preferred, or a website might even work.
Thanks
There are several websites which offer the service, so some of them should be accessible via Opera Mobile.
I've not used it myself, but a quick google suggests that Skype on WM can be used to send SMS.
Google Voice does it for free. So does Text plus.

[Q] Google Voice SMS via native app

Hey guys I havent been able to find anything current as if this was possible on android device.. I have JB IP4 and im using google voice sms through bitesms as my native app using the sms google voice extension. The way it works is that when the google voice app sends a push notification on the phone the google voice sms extension catches the push notification and sends it through bitesms as a normal sms. That way I was able to ditch the unlimited sms plan from ATT. Is something like that possible on android? Thats huge for me since 20 bucks a months is a damn ripoff. And i do lots and lots of txting lol. Thanks for any info =)
I've been an SMS GV Extensions user since it launched and finally bought an Android phone last week.
I took it for granted that Android would either do this already or be able to do this more easily (iOS required a jailbreak), but I instead find that you can only integrate incoming messages with the native Android messaging app and there doesn't seem to be a solution even with rooting your phone. This is disappointing, to say the least.
The fact that the Android GV app has an option in integrate inbound messages with the native messaging application but not outbound implies that is is a deliberate decision on Google's part because it is an obvious feature that is only half implemented. It is probably less a concern with cutting into the carriers' SMS revenue and more to do with constraining use of the service (Google has taken actions to curb heavy use in the past). If it integrated seemlessly, people would use it more.
This is something Google is just going to have to get over if they hope to remain competitive. There is some hope in that the new iMessaging that integrates with text messaging on iOS will put competitive pressure on them to do something similar with Android.
I will be first in line!
Psst... if anyone has found a way that I am unaware of despite constant searching in the past week, please advise us in this thread!
Google Voice Integration App?
I have not used this personally, and am in no way associated with the developer, but I found this app when searching for this exact functionality today. My Nexus S is currently integrated with GV on Sprint, so I have no way of actually testing whether this works or not, but if it does, its definitely worth $0.99!
I've been contemplating a switch to Verizon because of Sprint's slow network speeds, and would do so if I could have this functionality. If anyone has tried it, please provide feedback.

I just tried that app about 20 minutes ago. It shows promise. If you compose a message using the native SMS app it will send via Google Voice.
However, it doesn't integrate incoming messages. If you use GV's built in text forwarding, messages will come from your contact's alias (406, 973, etc) number. Also, you won't see messages you've sent using the Google Voice app or website in the native client.
I refunded it but I'll definitely buy again after improvements are made.
check out the google voice sms integration app on the market.
just search for mdrtools and u will find it.
