Default Android Launcher Dilemma - Captivate General

Hi Everyone,
I've recently purchased my Samsung Captivate. Being new to Adroid IOS, I've been taking my time in understanding and testing certain apps before committing. I was testing out Launcher Pro vs the default Android Launcher by not choosing either as the default when utilizing the home button. While in class, my nosey neighbor decided she would choose the Android Launcher as my default application over Launcher Pro. I'm unable to revert this setting. I've reinstalled the app and have checked all settings under manage applications to no prevail. At this time I'm ready to have it as my default (Launcher Pro), but I just cant get it to become available. How do I undo the default setting?

There is a free app on the market called homeswitcher. That should get you what you need.
How did you get the default android home screen? or perhaps you are talking about touchwiz?

download home switcher from the market

You've tried Applications -> Manage Applications -> Launcher Pro -> Clear Defaults? Should work... but homeswitcher will work and is nice anyway.

To get rid of it without downloading anything go to Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > hit menu then choose filter, change to All, scroll down to TW Launcher select and click Clear defaults

Thanks dsjr2009. That did the trick. But man....ya'll are the best. So many replies in such a short time. Glad I joined xda dev. All is well.

Homeswitcher works great. However when using Launcher Pro I don't have access to the application launcher and to other apps like BuddiesNow.

Android iOS? Did anyone else catch that?

Sorry for the thread jack, but I think my question might help both me and the OP. I recently put android on my fuze and next month will be getting the captivate, so I'm new to android, too. I have noticed the extreme difference between the number of utility apps and cabs. I was wondering if xda had a list of so called "must have's" or "useful" type of list.
I ask if xda has one because through my experience with winmo, I trust these users and devs more than any other source and I really don't want to start a thread for this question. EDIT: Plus it is not an uncommon thing to see a thread on the winmo side with someone posting their cabs they install on every build and I haven't seen such threads in android.
Thanks,
Dustin

Haha iOS implies that you are on an iDevice (iPhone, etc.) Just take out the 'i' and say Android OS or just Android

If they're native, you can't remove them, but if they install upon hard resetting the device, they should be removable.

"Apps" is right there in Settings. All sarcasms aside, it just takes a little bit of patience and exploring to find things. If you don't like changes, I guess iDevice would be a better fit as Apple has kept things the same for all generations of the iDevices.

Call Settings, SIP settings, etc
Another item that used to be under MENU/Settings/Call Settings in Android 2.3.x is now under DIALER or PHONE (no MENU first), and then Settings.
Call Settings then has a lot of important configuration settings for calls, dialer behaviour, SIP (internet call) accounts, etc.
Except for the above, I can't seem to find another route to Call Setting from System Settings. I am using cyanogenmod 9.0.0 RC1 with Nexus S.

Interesting, I can see it too; it's probably somehow been enabled there, but the actual functionality behind it won't appear until it's fully released.

I'm sure Google will add plenty of nice features for this but it's just absolutely ridiculous how you can't locate your phone unless you physically have your GPS on. What if, like me, GPS is only ever turned on when I need it. Useless if it got stolen (luckily I use Where Is My Droid aswell...)

ADM may be revolutionary for Nexus/pure devices but Samsung Dive/Find My Mobile has been doing the same thing (and more) for at least two years. Google could re-package dog crap as a "feature" and people would go nuts where the manufacturers have been doing some pretty cool stuff that gets overlooked, criticized, or taken for granted.

The problem is Samsung features like the one you described are often hidden under a stale and flowless user interface.
Thouchwiz is a weakness that Samsung must fix.
In light of the UI changes being made both Apple and Google... Samsung needs to do some major work.

And you think finding ADM under "Security>Device administrators" on the device and in a "store" under "settings" on a PC is supremely fresh and intuitive? The latter seems like a kludge either because Google was too lazy to create a dedicated site for ADM or it was cheaper/faster just to throw it in to Play because that’s where all their device management already takes place.
This is where Find My Mobile's controlled on the device. Pretty simple and straight-forward to me.

I think the features in TW are great; it's one of the reasons I buy Samsung devices. I agree that the appearance of TW is dated and could use an overhaul to make it more contemporary. Sense is a beautiful (but functionally deficient) overlay in my opinion. I think stock Android is a barren wasteland aesthetically and functionally. Comparing it to iOS is a really big stretch. Now that a GE SGS4 exists those that hate TW don't have to continue to attack it.
Touchwiz isnt the problem AT ALL. The problem is samsungs software only works on touchwiz. This works on just about everything, and as featureless as it might be at the moment, it wouldnt take google long to catch up if they wanted to.

[APP][4.1+] Snype - fastest way to access apps and contacts

Hi all!
I wasn't satisfied with any of the current methods of accessing all apps/contacts so I set out to create my own.
I present to you, Snype.
Snype has a unique dual-index system where switching between "snyping" apps and contacts is almost instant. It has changed the way I use my device and has done the same for many of my beta testers.
It also has a unique "side panel" mode where apps and contacts can be accessed simply by scrolling a finger up or down the edge of the display, which is always active no matter which app you are currently in. A list will appear and automatically begin scrolling to the location in the index that the finger is pointing to.
Snype does not try to replace your launcher. In fact, I designed it so that I would be able to use any launcher I like and not have to worry about the launcher's implementation of the app drawer. This means it's very easy to have a completely uncluttered, beautiful home screen and still be only a second away from accessing any app or contact you desire.
There are no ads and all functionality is available for free. The premium upgrade allows full customisation of the appearance of the lists.
Let me know how it goes for you!
I should mention that the premium upgrade is available for $0.99 for a short period of time to celebrate the launch of Snype. It will be a bit more later.

Really good app. I will give you 5 stars!
Some things to change:
- Add more languages
- if possible the alphabet lists have a title to know that one it is for apps, and the other for contacts.
- A widget and a direct access from home.

Thanks for the excellent feedback.
More languages is actually a surprisingly large challenge due to the indexes. It is something that I might look into again later, but when I was having a crack at it before there were some significant technical hurdles.
I have thought about doing something to let you know at a glance which is for apps and which is for contacts... like different colours or something. I'm not sure. Where do you think the title should go? There's not much room there.
I also looked into doing a widget. Unfortunately widgets don't support all kinds of views so making a widget with this functionality is impossible unless the launcher is built specifically for it. That's actually the main reason I implemented the side panels, because I knew the widget would not be possible.
ability to launch apps in halo would be nice. And maybe icon theme support. Very nice and useful app by the way:good:

I just released an update to fix some crashes in the initial release.
I just released an update which added animation to the side panels, adds Snype to the list of apps and fixes some bugs. I'm still trying to hunt down some bugs that occur only on some devices. Let me know if you have one of those devices please.
Okay, I think I've got all the known bugs fixed. Let me know if there's anything else wonky.
Just released an update with a new feature: favourites bar.
Now it's even faster to access those special few apps and contacts you use most often.
I love the ability to search contracts easily! And light theme looks cool.
Keep it up!:good:

SEARCH EVRYTHING
Hey guys,
Iv'e published my new app for android power users who have lots of files on their device and want easy access to them. It's called Search Everything. It's a file search app that scans your file system and indexes it. Then filters the list by your search term. The result is a fast almost instant results. It operates much like the program "Everything" on windows.
Google Play Link:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.marlon.searcheverything
Would like to hear some feedback
I'd really love to use this app full time but it does not list any files on my external SD (/storage/sdcard1).
Also, a few basic optinos like show/hide hidden files or garbage files from cache folders.
On the plus side, I really love the sheer speed and i like the color and simple interface design.
Hope there's an update sooon!

Looks great but could you add option to show files thumbnails?
Great app, fast and smooth search but it did not index my external SD card. Couldn't find any thing in my SD card.
Sony Xperia ZL running lastest PAC nightly.
Gets force close at every startup. Running stock rom 4.4.4 franco kernel
Great app very fast any plans for root and website searches?
Quick and simple, but on open containing folder rootexplorer 2.x opens the default home directory instead..
The app works great- just like Everything
I've got a suggestion- it would be great if you could make a widget like google's quick search bar, or an app "in" the notification bar (like Notable).
And if it could search apps too.
I know it's a lot- but it's just to get you thinking if you want to add something (the app works great as it is, for me)

LOL you beat me to it. I was gonna suggest the same.
This app is great! Exactly what I have been searching for for a long time! Here are a few more suggestions:
Option to exclude specific locations from being indexed/searched.
Option to launch the app by pressing the search capacitive button, instead of the default google search app.
EDIT: forgot to mention the reason to exclude specific locations - don't really need the gallery thumbnail files in search, do we?
And what about searching/launching apps? Possible? Planned?
Great app, great work
I have now installed this app on my Nexus 7(2013), Nexus 5, and a Motto E and it works amazingly well.
I have been using ES File explorer since I did my first Android device root about 5 years ago and it has been my goto method of searching my devices ever since. But, as anyone who has done this knows it is painfully slow.
Your app has finally changed that and I could not be more grateful.
Thank you for all of your work it is greatly appreciated!
FC while indexing
Fantastic idea. 'Everything' on the PC is so useful, and this is no different. I don't need it to be able to open or view a file, just find where it is, that's been the painfull part upto now.
I do however get PC's every time during indexing, once it gets to around 32K+ files.

I am also getting a FC on startup. Running PA with Franco kernel. Nexus 5.

This would be a great feat, but imo, only if the search-speed isn't affected

I'm again worried about speed, but if you are looking for a fast and easy way to launch apps you could try App Dialer https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=name.pilgr.appdialer
