Hey guys, new to the forum. I've had IPhones since the first week they came out in 2006. I finally decided to leave the box and try a phone that I could do what I wanted to with it. However, I'm constantly getting discouraged with this phone. I searched and it would seem nobody else is having the problems I am having, so I am hoping someone on here will be able to point me in the right direction.
First things first, this phone is beyond better than any of my Iphones. As far as speed, capability, and function. And I haven't had one dropped call since I got it last week (knock on wood). Here's where the problems started. I can't get my Windows 7 to communicate with this phone at all. I spent hours on the phone with Samsung and they couldn't get my phone to sync at all. They told me that they don't have Windows 7 drivers available yet. I do however, have a Mac at home and am able to sync it up, but only as a mass-storage device. I would have thought that I would have gotten a disc or something with software for my computer. Guess I was looking for something like an ITunes setup where I could see everything on a list.
Using this as a mass-storage device works, but not as well as I would have liked. I downloaded a great App (Act 1 Video) and cannot see my thumb tabs. The designer of the app has been incredible, but he wants me to mount the SD card and delete the DCIM/. thumbnails directory. On my Mac I can't find what he is asking me to do and I am thinking it may be because I am only able to look at certain things on it.
I'll be very upfront by saying that I am not very technical with computers, but to not be able to sync on Windows 7 seems like a very big oversight on Samsungs part. I still think the phone is better than the Iphone, but if I can't get the phone to work like it should I will have to go back to the box and stay inside it with the IPhone. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
-Chris
Have you tried the Samsung Kies software?
I am on Windows 7 x64 and it works like a charm for me. I just can't plug into my front panel usb ports, so I use my keyboards powered USB and it works fine.
(If I plug into the front panel, my keyboard goes haywire, all of my LCD apps stop running and the keyboard falls into a disconnect/reconnect loop)
Other than that one small issue, the Kies software has worked very well for everything from Kies mode (for syncing) to debugging for adb and development.
Download the Canada version of Kies, here: http://img.samsungapps.com/support/Kies_1.5.1.10071_32.exe
Also, make sure any drivers you have tried to install in Windows 7 have been uninstalled, (you can do this by plugging in your phone and finding it in the device manager. Right click on it, and click uninstall. When the option to delete driver software comes up, check the box to confirm deletion of the driver upon uninstalling)
I have had zero problems with win 7 and the captivate.

I tore my hair out with Kies as well until I plugged into the back USB ports on my computer. I was one of the first to discover this over on AndroidForums. I also discovered that the MTP Application (the app on the phone that enables USB syncing with Kies) won't work with LauncherPro or ADW.Launcher, so make sure you switch to TouchWiz before trying to use Kies.
Ok, I just switched the phone from Mass Storage to Samsung Kies. I turned off the USB Debugging and am downloading the software right now. The problem with plugging the phone is is that my computer doesn't even see it. It makes the USB connect sound and then when I go into My Computer it's not there. I'm going to try and connect to the back of my tower and see if that help. I have 32bit W7 and don't have ports in my keyboard. Thanks for the advise. I'll let you guys know if it works.

Iphone came out in July 2007, not 2006.
I have windows 7 Professional 64 bit on my computer at home and it works perfectly fine with my phone. I've used adb to send commands to it. I've also mounted the internal sdcard memory and transferred files back and forth to it. You have to download the usb drivers for your OS, install them first, then plug the phone in. Or you could just download and install the entire Samsung Kies package.
But I'm not sure what you mean by syncing with your computer. Its not like the iphone where it syncs with an application (unless you have an HTC and download and run HTC sync).
I have not had any compatibility problems with the captivate on windows 7. I use 2 different computers between work and home and have not had issues with either. I do, however, have the android SDK installed on both machines. Noting this I must mention that I had trouble getting my Aria to sync until I installed the USB drivers from the SDK packages.
This being said, you should not have to go through the hassle of downloading extra drivers to make the phone work on your system. It SHOULD be hassle free.
I have had issues with videos not showing thumbnail views in the gallery. I don't consider this a functional problem so I have not looked into it but it is annoying and I will address it soon.
My wife is on her 2nd iPhone and I have gone from WinMo to Android. This phone is phenomenal and even she is now seeing the limitations put on her device. It will take a lot to pull me from Android from this point.

That really sucks because I liked Kies but switched to Launcher Pro.

FYI - I could not use USB Debugging and Mass Storage at the same time until I installed Kies. Once Kies was installed, when USB Debugging was enabled, the phone defaulted to Mass Storage and everything worked great. You also don't need to put the phone into Kies mode to get it to connect after you install the software. The driver will still install, and you should hopefully be good from there.
Like the other posters above have said, if you're using a home replacement (ADWLauncher or LauncherPro for example) make sure you switch back to the stock TWLauncher (TouchWiz) before syncing with Kies with the phone in Kies Mode.
Good luck, I hope Kies does it for you, it did the trick for me.
I have Win7 x64 and it took me a full 4-5 days to get it to recognize my phone. I had the drivers installed from Samsung's site, but they would always fail when I plugged in my phone. Eventually someone let me in on Samsung's retarded joke - you have to use the back usb ports if you have a desktop. Works like a charm now. Also tested in WinXP and Vista x86, worked fine in both when using the back usb ports, crapped out and wouldn't recognize with the front ones.
try using Samsung Kies...
Ok, I have done everything that you guys have said, except switching to touch wiz. I don't know where that setting is in my phone. I have definitely made progress. My phone now shows a USB Connected Pic on the screen. My computer is realizing that there is something plugged in. And that's where the progress stops. I tell the phone to connect with Kies then I get an error message, "USB Not Recognized." It then says, "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it." I'm starting to think there is something wrong with my phone's USB Port. Does that sound like something that could be causing all of this? Again, thanks to everyone who has chimed in.
Go to setting/application /manage app / look for launcher pro and clear defaults. Now press home and switch to TW launcher or download home switcher from the market. BTW try Doubletwist for your PC to sync your phone.

Ok, this just keeps getting more interesting for me. I did what you said and Launcher pro is not on the list. Did I inadvertantly do something to my phone by having it connected to my Mac? Either this phone is beyond me (very possible), or there is software missing from it.
After you go to manage application PRESS MENU/ show all application now look for launcher pro or the launcher you currently using.

I had the same issues with usb which I was able to solve by moving the usb cable to the back of my computer. Not really sure why that made a difference but it was required for several other users as well.

I bought my Captivate on day one, and from my personal experience, I've have little/no need to put the phone in Kies mode. The only usable feature to connecting the PC is for USB debugging using the SDK, or to put stuff on the SD Cards (int/Ext).
Yeah, the Kies interface may look nice, but if you sync to google on your pc, then your phone should already be syncing to google as well without having to connect to your pc.
Also, I believe people have assumed that you may have another launcher and not realize that you may have a stock phone, which won't have Launcher Pro or anything other than the default TouchWiz UI.
All I've done was root, install ROM Manager to backup the phone, and am now waiting for FroYo. Otherwise, I love this phone.
You sir, have won a chicken dinner. I am indeed running the stock app, and my phone is stock. I did find TW Launcher in apps and cleared data. Boy was that stupid. I ended up erasing all of my app shortcuts. Guess I am back to stage one. So.........any other ideas?

Don't be afraid to do a factory reset on the phone. I had a ton of problems and finally last night I had had it and did a factory reset. Almost every one of my problems, down to GPS and poor battery life are MUCH better now. I think something just got screwed up on my phone.
Also, I echo what people have said about where you plug it in. I had something so simple as a USB extension from the back of my computer that I could plug my phone into, and it wouldn't recognize my phone with it (Windows 7). Sometimes I think I could get it to work a little, but transfer rates were very slow if I did. I plugged it directly in and it worked flawlessly. Oddly enough, I can plug it into a USB hub on my MacBook and it works fine, so I don't know why that is.
Ok, I've just about given up on this venture, but am willing to try a reset. Dare I ask how to do that? Also, am I going to loose all of my contacts, apps, and movies? Thanks for the advise.

Hey all, I've had my Captivate now for afew days and I'm loving it, but today I ran across an issue that's driving me crazy.
For some reason when I connect it to my PC I'm not longer getting the Mount SD option on the phone and can't look at my files. I've enabled USB debugging and tried it. I've told it to come up as Mass Storage and tried it. I also told it to Ask when connected and it's still not working properly. The drives show up in Windows but cannot be accessed. I also no longer get the USB notification up in the notification bar.
The weird thing is sometimes if I restart the phone and connect it everything is fine, but then if I go to do it again nothing. Anyone have any suggestions?
Biggest misconception here is that its random, it isn't.
Download kies by samsung and update it and you will get the right USB drivers installed automatically.
If you choose not to do that, you'll Vast have to keep trying different ports or restarting.
Its also possible that you may have a faulty wire but this is unlikely.

I've tried it with multiple wires, and when it works it is reliable, but most of the time it's just not showing a USB connection on the phone.
I spent awhile downloading Kies and it's updates and in Mass Storage mode it sees the drives of the phone but doesn't let me use them. I Kies mode it does nothing... This is so confusing...
Go in here download the drivers:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728929
Be aware, they might take up to 15 minutes to install, and no KIE is not included.
Make sure you close all your apps on phone before connecting to PC. Few apps that use the SD will hold the resource and not allow for PC connection.

I downloaded those afew days ago but I will redownload and reinstall again just incase. I think the fact that the USB notification isn't showing up in the bar on the top of the phone is what's confusing me the most. Previously I would see the USB Icon and something would pop up saying I need to mount the drive. I would mount it and there would be no problem. Now I'm not getting that at all and I've tried Mass Storage, USB Debugging, Kies, and Ask.
I've never had a problem connecting my Captivate to my Windows 7 64 bit computer. I didn't install Kies or any drivers either. Not sure what all the fuss is about. I'm suspecting a lot of PEBCAK errors.
I'm starting to think there are some strange power requirements when connecting the phone to USB. Most of my systems have been fine but on one, when I connect the phone to the front USB ports, the USB Wifi adapter on the back simply stops working. While the phone is connected, the computer refuses to recognize the Wifi adapter. A soon as I disconnect the phone it starts working again.
I've seen people on other forums with intermittent issues getting the mass storage connection to work when connected to the front ports on their systems. A lot of times the front ports are connected through a USB hub in the computer case that doesn't deliver full power. If the phone isn't drawing enough power or is shunting power from other devices, this might explain the issues people are having.
Mine is acting up . I used both teh 5.02 drivers from samsung and the one linked here and similar results. In Samsung mode it goes to the Digital Still camera and flakes and on mass storage it shows two new drives..neither of which is writable or readable. This is on a cap with no SD card and XP sp3. I tried different ports but with the same result.
I was fighting with this all day. I installed, uninstalled, reinstalled all the drivers and kies, but, I was trying to connect via media player and nothing was happening. Then I noticed that there was a small message popping up on the Captivate's screen that said something about the device had to be on the idle screen before it would connect and fun the sync software. Tried turning off all running programs and still nothing. Then, I remembered that I had switched to Launcher Pro. I switched back to touch wiz, and lo and behold, it connected right up and allowed me to sync items with media player.
Interesting. I've been using ADW.Launcher and haven't see this problem except when I don't get the cable securely inserted into the Captivate. I even use a Nokia cable most of the time. The Kies Drivers are clearly the most stable. I downloaded the Drivers from the Captivate microsite and found they didn't support KIES, so I just reinstalled the KIES driver for MTP. Everything else works fine on W7x64.

Well this sucks. On my Captivate, unless you are using TW.Launcher and in the idle screen, the Captivate won't launch MTP so you can connect to KIES. The USB Storage mode works with other Launchers (ADW and LaunchPro), but not KIES or Media. I didn't try PC Internet tethering. I switched between the two several times, and KIES only works with TW.Launcher on my device.
Is there anyone who knows of a Launcher OTHER than TW.Launcher that will interface with KIES so that the Captivate can connect? Or can ADW or LauncherPro be "tweaked" for the Captivate? I was just starting to like ADW.Launcher.

It's the Tenda 311U which is also a cheap piece of crap ($15 at Micro Center.) It doesn't look like they use the same chipset.
I've had the same issue as well. Hooking up the Captivate to the front USB ports disables my USB mouse (on the back). I'm not sure what it could be doing that would lock up the USB bus...
Using Windows 7 netbook
I finally got tired of it deciding and put in the mode to ask me when I connect. the problem i am having is when you just charge it, it does not know that it is just charging and wants to go to ysb mass storage or the other screen. also I use double twist to connect to the phone.
thanks
Jon
The best bet here is to use USB ports on the back of the computer.

If you're still having problems, select mass storage and connect the usb (or select ask every time and it will ask when you plug it in). To access the drive like a removable drive, you have to swipe the icon in the top right of the screen and select the usb selection. Then click mount and it should work! I had a hard time with this too and thought it wasn't very intuitive. Good luck!

Yep, strangely enough using the back ports worked. I'll have to see if a powered USB hub will work and then I guess we can conclude that it's a power issue.

I've set it to both Mass Storage and Ask every time and the problem I get is that I only get the USB icon up top sometimes, it's very rare. I've tried this on multiple ports and multiple PCs with the drivers downloaded and sometimes the notification shows up and I can select mount, but most of the time nothing is in my notification bar at all.
I love this phone but I don't understand why it's so frustrating just to connect it to a PC. I've also tried the Kies methods and it sees the phone, but doesn't let me access the files.

USB Setting no PC- Connection
I just got my AT&T captivate and I notice that under application, usb setting I don't have the PC-internet option in there. This is only what I have under USB setting:
Kies(Firmware update)
Media Player
Mass storage
Ask on connection
So, question is, how do I enable the pc-internet option? Any suggestion I really appreciate.

Hi all, Ive had my captivate for about a week now and have been playing with it, I've been all over the web trying to figure out why I can't sync it with my pc Ive tried both my laptop with windows 7 and my desktop running XP. Nothing will work ive downloaded the drivers from Samsung's site and kies and kies mini with no luck. No matter what i do it says device not recognized windows has stopped the device and nothing shows up on the phones screen it just shows its charging, I'm guessing its something I'm doing but i just don't know what. Once I had so much trouble I connected a Samsung flight to my PC that's running XP and it worked just fine. Can anyone help me out i want to root the captivate so i can get take off all this att crap!!!
Did you mount the phone after plugging it into your computer? You should pull down the notification bar and it should give you the option to copy files to/from computer.
Also, set you usb settings to mass storage. It's in settings...can't remember where on stock.

Yes I have put the phone in all the different usb settings debugging, media player, mass storage, ask on connection, kies. When I plug it in the only thing that changes on the phone screen is its showing its charging it doesn't give me any option to mount. The same cable will connect my old Flight phone and that phone transfers files just fine. This really has me stumped.
You downloaded and installed drivers from this site? http://www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/SGH-I897ZKAATT
This may sound random and stupid but are you plugging into a USB that is directly connected to the motherboard (back of the computer)? If you're on a laptop there is no way to test this...basically, there was some issues before of people not having their computer recognize their phone and the issue was too low of power from the USB.
Hopefully someone else can chime in as well. I'm pretty new to this too so I can only think of fairly basic things.
Hi,
Quick background: Former sys admin with some Unix experience. Already own a Toshiba Thrive rooted with CWM. Gave that to the wife and got me the GT 7+. Read the forum here prior to buying. Rooted on day one.
Stats: GT-P6210 Build: HTJ85B.UEKL1 P6210UEKL1
PC: Windows 7 21 Bit Enterprise SP1
Kies: Kies_2.1.1.11124_17_6
Later on the first day, after installing aps, I installed latest version of Kies and plugged it in with the supplied usb cable in order to transfer some files to my Sandisk 32Gb microsd. Kies already running and debugging off as per the instructions. Results: Tab plays a notice and I see the MTP connected icon. My pc does NOTHING. No sound, no notice, Kies does nothing.
I unplugged and tried the other 3 ports. 2nd port gives me same result and on the 3 & 4 port I lose the tab's MTP notice and it begins charging.
So, this is what I have done in order:
1. Re-installed Kies--->same result. No MTP notice on tab.
2. Debugging on--->same
3. Tried in on my room mate's W7 machine---> Alas! I get a driver installation and I am able to see both drives. I quickly unplugged and thanked him.
4. Cleaned my pc by:
a. Deleting all USB controllers
b. Deleting all USB installations on registry (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetEnumUSBSTOR)
c. CCLEANER the whole system.
d. Turn off. Pull off battery. Press power button to drain motherboard.
e. Restart and re-install USB controllers.
f. Restart again.
5. Plug in again--->Tab plays a notice and I see the MTP connected icon. My pc does NOTHING. No sound, no notice, Kies does nothing.
6. Pull my hair, bang my head, wished I would have kept the Thrive. (just plug, and drag and drop)
Left it plugged to the pc overnight. Next morning I see the found new device on systray and it is trying to find drivers. I quickly open Kies and see some activity as it tries to connect. and after a few seconds, it stops. Result: No drivers installed, no Kies recognition, no drive letters, nothing.
8. At this point I ask my room mate to let me plug in on his pc to see if he still sees it and nothing happens on his pc.
9. I wipe the table back to stock.--->Tab plays a notice and I see the MTP connected icon. My pc does NOTHING. No sound, no notice, Kies does nothing. Then after I tried other ports, it begins charging and I lose the MTP notice.
10. I re-roo,t reconfigure the beast, and do a backup. Tablet is running smooth as silk, but it never connects. This all happened in the last three days.
11. Last thing I did, as I am writing this with the tablet plugged in to the pc and MTP notice on, was to un-mount the microsd and remount. MTP re-initializes and it does nothing.
I may be suspecting a cable and unfortunately, I am in no position to get my hands on another one in a timely manner. At this point, I could reflash back to a stock firmware, send back to amazon and wait for another one to come in three to four weeks (I am deployed to a remote area) and I just don't want to do that.
The tab runs great. Love the size and speed. I guess I can continue taking out the microsd card out every time I want to add a file, but I am afraid that it may eventually end up ruining the card and possibly the tablet.
Please help. I have scoured the internet, but all I ever find is solutions that I already have tried.
Thanks in advance,
Sal
you could use adb over wifi.. There are a few apps in the market for this. Does adb recognize the tab when its plugged in via USB?
Also try Android commander, it is a GUI based adb server, you should be able to navigate to sdcard/extstorages/ and your external card should be there
Sent from my HTC Glacier using Tapatalk
You could also use a file explorer like Root Explorer and Dropbox to transfer files back and forth.
Have you tried a different USB port on the PC? like one round the back.
Also, try without the sdcard in.
Ticked/unticked USB development/debugging on the tablet?
If it works on another computer though it would suggest its your own PC which has the problem, not the tablet.
tried with Linux on the same PC?
Does Odin see the tablet when in download mode?
if you have clockwork mod recovery, doesn't that have a USB mount option ? It does on my gs 2. My tab isn't with me to check.
Oh and kies has an option to reinstall the driver. Did you try with the older version of kies again?

If it works on another computer though it would suggest its your own PC which has the problem, not the tablet.
tried with Linux on the same PC?
Does Odin see the tablet when in download mode?
if you have clockwork mod recovery, doesn't that have a USB mount option ? It does on my gs 2. My tab isn't with me to check.
Oh and kies has an option to reinstall the driver. Did you try with the older version of kies again?

I have done all that you mentioned with the exception of Linux and Odin. I am not going to get into Linux as that would start a whole other project. I will install ADB to see if I can force the drivers.
I just tried the CWM mount USB mount but get "E: Unable to open ums lunfile (No such file or directory)"
Also, on my friend's pc worked once but not after that.
I will continue to explore the ODIN suggestion.
Thanks,
Sal

I use ES Explorer (wonderful app!) now. My end-state is not to have to remove the card every time I transfer a file.

EDIT: Sorry, I see now the dropbox suggestion. Yes that would work for smaller files, but I am not sure that dropbox can handle movie size files. It would be a last resort solution.
Thanks,
Sal
Adb is probably going to be your best bet. It can be a pain to set up at times, but in the long run is a must have for any Android device. Kies normally installs the drivers that adb uses, so hopefully you can get them to install. If it still doesn't work I would suggest swapping it out for a new tab, as much as that sucks. If you need help, I constantly check these forums, so I should be able to provide some support

Well, got ADB installed and running. Set the path and ran it. Plug the tab with debugging clicked on, and got "MTP connected" on the tab's screen. At this point I am excited since I never seen the "MTP connected " on debug mode. I typed the "adb devices" command and got "List of devices attached" ___________________.
Yep, blank. Obviously the pc is not seeing it. My conclusions are the following:
1. Bad cable
2. Bad device
The fact that it recognized once on my room mates' pc and then none at all, and the fact that it was recognized on my pc for a brief random time, then it means that the device can't handshake with the motherboard and thus is a communication issue.
I'll try my luck with Samsung tech support and see if they can replace the cable.
Just thought of something, would installing Windows XP Mode under a Windows Virtual PC recognize new devices or just feed from the Windows 7 library?

I placed the tab on download mode and queried it from adb and got nothing. I then queried it via ODIN3 and got no response as well.
I have come to terms that it has to be the device or the USB cable. Just ordered two (yes, two) different type cables to test out the theory. If they don't do it, then I am sending the tab back to Amazon.
It takes about a week to get stuff shipped where I am at so I'll check in later and report.
Sal
Just an update.
I bought a cheap cable from Amazon for $ 3.31 US to test the cable theory and guess what? It worked.
Curse you Samsung for your lack of QC with your cables. I have read throughout most of the forums (not just this one) and it seems that cables for these devices are notoriously finicky.
While on the one hand, I am glad that I got a cable that works, Samsung owes me over thirty hours of my life that I had to spend on troubleshooting a brand new device.
The part that I hate the most is that when I tried to contact Samsung's tech support, all they kept telling me is that it must be my pc even after I told them all the troubleshooting that I had done. Yes, they played the blame game.
My Toshiba Thrive worked right out of the box with a standard micro usb cable.
Ok. Rant off.
Sal
Glad to hear you got it working. Personally I have a ftp server set up on my comp that I use to transfer files back and forth. Much easier IMO than having a cable every time I need something transferred

Guys-
In a quandry - I should have rooted a couple months ago. I cannot get my Charge to recogize a USB connection with the comptuter. Computer recognizes something is trying to connect but computer gives me a USB Device Not Recognized message. It charges the phone when connected to the computer but doesn't ask me how I want to use the phone (as a mass storage device or media player) any more.
To make a long story short, I have tried everything - different USB cables, different USB ports, different computers, USB debug on and off, Ask on Connection and Mass Storage settings on and off. Have even gone thru several master resets of the phone and still will not recognize a computer connection.
Would love to root and hold on to this thing for at least a little longer, so my last thought is to ask if it's possible to root this device without a computer connection. From what I've read through on some other forum threads it's possible with some phones. I'm hoping this one can manage it.
Thanks, in advance.
While I'm certainly no expert, I am pretty sure its impossible to do what you're asking.

Drivers not necessary. I was able to plug into, and connect with, no less than four different computers at work and home on a regular basis for approx. 1 yr 10 months without ever having to install a driver, and I am quite sure that they didn't just download automatically (never saw that happen). Now I need one?
Operating systems on the computers have been Win XP, Win 7 Home and Win 7 Pro.
I suspect that its a physical issue inside the micro USB port in the phone thats the issue since no one has any other solutions.

perhaps you already the drivers and now there has been update. just saying, won't hurt until you try it. computers can be finicky that way sometimes.
For what it is worth, here are my steps:
phone settings: USB debugging enabled; ask on connection (when connected, place phone in "mass storage")
PC settings: download/install all samsung drivers applicable with this phone; reboot computer; use OEM cable only
then, follow steps from the rooting thread.
also, do you have an SDcard? if not, that could be an/the issue (either you need one, or the one you have is corrupted). often times, my computer will ask me to repair my sdcard - I usually hit no. after plugging it in, give it at least 5 minutes to secure a connection.
hope this helps.
I know that I had to, for whatever reason, manually download & install the drivers for my Win7 system before I could fully connect my phone to computer. Had similar issues with Motorola phones and ASUS T300T tablet. Windows always works? Not in my experience and I do this for a living (computers). :banghead:

Sorry guys - I've tried all of that. With SD card in, with it out, with battery in, battery out, sim card in/out. Literally every variant.
And the great thing is - show stopper here - I went to the Samsung website to download a driver a few weeks back, and the driver does not install correctly!! It just won't install - poops out somewhere (driver not installed properly message). Tried this on one Win 7 computer and one with XP. With firewalls on and off. It's like Samsung doesn't have their you-know-what together.
Hello all. I have a problem that is not unique, but I cannot for the life of me seem to fix it.
My S6 will not stay connected to my PC so I can transfer files, use Kies, SmartSwitch, or anything. Sometimes I hear the Windows notification that it's plugged in, but even when I do, it goes back and forth between being recognized and not. Most of the time it doesn't even show up in Device Manager.
I'm currently running Windows 10, but it did the same thing on Windows 8.1.
I have downloaded the Samsung USB drivers as well as allowed Kies and SmartSwitch to install them.
Thinking my Windows 10 being upgraded from 8.1 without a full wipe carried over whatever problem was in 8.1, I did a full wipe of my PC and reloaded Windows 10 clean. That also didn't help. Note: when I first installed Windows 10 clean, my PC didn't recognize my phone at all. It just acted like a charger. After I installed the Samsung USB drivers, it started making the 'connecting' and 'disconnecting' sounds. Also, the most I got Windows to recognize my phone was for about 5 seconds, and that was right after turning off USB debugging. But with it on or off, it still won't stay connected.
And yes, I've made sure (when the phone has connected for a second or two) that it was on MTP. But... I've tried the camera mode as well.
This makes it not only impossible to move files easily between my phone and PC, but also to use Odin.
I've read many posts where people have this problem, but everyone just tells them to go download the Samsung USB driver, and after having done so three different ways, I can say it doesn't work for me.
Anyone who could solve this for me... well... I'd be willing to donate a bit of money to the cause of your choosing, including yourself.
No one else has experienced this or is willing to shed some light on this?
When I had that issue with my nexus 7 I switched out the USB cable for a different one. Seems to have improved.

Yeah, I'm definitely not going to downgrade to Win7. That would be 2 Windows versions ago for me. I've installed every driver available, from Samsung's (with and without Kies) to Google's universal Android USB drivers, and none have worked. I've also tried USB 3.0 and 2.0 ports (I have both on my laptop).

For me the standard USB cable gives this problem, with another cable it works perfectly. So try another cable

Hi, everybody.
May you help me, please? My S6 SM-G920F, also is not recognised by windows 7. Smart Switch say S6 dont connect in emergency mode. I supose they means "emergency calls only", is that? I had bought the phone locked to O2 but I live in Portugal and I have no valid O2 SIM card. I bought an unlock SRS by TomMobile because I dont knew that needs a USB cable connection. What can I do, please?

Hello wvcadle,
I have the same issue and it is quite frustrating. Did you find a solution? As some additional info for you. My i-phone was doing the same thing on my computer. I thought it was the phone and I upgraded to a Samsung S6. It does the same thing as the I-phone, what you described and it works fine with other PCs. SO must be computer related. My bet is windows and my IT recommend a full wipe and reinstall of windows. We run Windows 7 Professional.

its not usb port or cable problem... this problem starts when someone trying to root ... & damage efs partition..
Its just Cable problem my friend.
Find and buy a reliable usb cable. You stated all options and fixes but you never been able to speak of your cable
For those whose saying that root and damaged efs will affect your phone connection to your pc, he's wrong . Rooting and corrupted efs partition doesnt have to do with windows driver etc.
Just think out of the box.
If it did not work with your pc. Then switch to other pc with smart switch & samsung usb driver installed.
I prefer installing samsung usb driver and then smart switch.
If it didnt work, try using different cables.
If it didnt work again, use other samsung phone and see if it connects.
And so on ...
Having exactly the same issue...
Started just today (yesterday and previously no problems experienced, phone would just connect & be visible and available for data tfr, no problems). Today, no go. To be clear, it's Galaxy S6 128 gb running Lollipop, which no longer connects for data tfr via USB to laptop running win7 ultimate. It only connects and charges. I have checked for updates for both windows and Android. There are none outstanding. I have downloaded & reinstalled samsung USB drivers on laptop. No change. I have tried 4 different USB cables, 2 new, and the cable supplied with phone. No go. I have tried these cables in all USB ports on laptop. I have tested other devices in all USB ports and connectivity to laptop with other devices is fine. I have tried connecting phone to another PC, same issue (only charging). I have done the developer thing and switched USB debugging on, no change, and off again, rebooted both devices multiple times, all with no change. Yesterday all was good, today - nada. Anyone got any other suggestions?? Wit's end, reached.
It's been said many times already, but I had this problem and it was the original white cord that came with the phone. It would not stay connected to my laptop nor would it stay connected to the charger. It sat there blinking and making the charge cord inserted sound when plugged into the charger/computer. I changed cables and it went away.
I remember picking the phone up one night in bed and forgot the charging cord was attached. I reached the end of the line and it yanked out of my hand and fell to the ground. This is the only thing I can think of that damaged the cord. I was lucky it didn't damage the charge port on the phone. So you could have a screwed up charge port on the phone if you've tried new cords with no avail. I wouldn't encourage it but sometimes the charging fin can be bent back into place to make a better connection....had to do this on a dell tablet.
Also, if you're using lock screen or fingerprint, I believe you have to unlock the phone after connecting to PC to access and transfer stuffs - just a thought.

Thanks for the input - it's not a lock screen issue - I've tried connecting with screen locked (then unlocking when connected) - and connecting with screen unlocked, and I don't use the fingerprint security option. No changes observed. I have had concerns about the charging fin, but I am always careful connecting and careful with the phone generally - it looks OK and I'm rather loath to start bending it about in case I just f**k it up entirely. At least it still charges OK. Looks like I might have to bite the bullet, wipe it and take it to a Samsung repair centre. At least it's still under first year warranty. Thanks for your time talroot.
Original white cable did not work from day 1. Fast Charging is working fine but USB connection and tethering is a hell. You need a new cable and a good quality, not some cheep stuff.
Samsung really disappointed me because I owned many of their devices and most of them had some small issues, but after this in s6 edge and overheating issue (especially when using Gear VR) I will not by from Samsung anymore.
just for the record....
...my phone started connecting to laptop again. After about 3 weeks of non-connectivity, I connected again to charge and *ding* it was an external USB device once more. Same cable as before. Doesn't make any sense, but there it is. Thank you everyone for your input.
