Hi,
I've uploaded to the market a free widget that can send SMS messages or make calls. It works at least on Nexus One and on HTC Hero, but I got emails from a user that says he gets com.android.mms force close on his HTC desire, and another user complained about the same thing on HTC incredible. I don't have these devices, and I was hoping that someone with them might be willing to spend 5 minutes checking out what is wrong. The project is at code.google.com/p/frequentcontacts and the application can be found on the market under "Frequent Contacts Widget". I'm trying to work on bug number 4. To reproduce add frequent messages widget to desktop and try to use it. Any ideas about a better way to find cause will be appreciated.
Thanks for your help,
Oren

Does anyone know where I can find the stock messages .apk (from 2.2 or 2.1)? I really prefer it over any of the market ones and definitely over the Sense messages application.
Send a pm to darchdroid, over in the cdma hero development. He created an aosp Rom, and may be able to give you the apk. Or check the nexus 1 forums, if there is a diff between the apps for low and high res devices.

I prefer it to Handcent and HTC's version. If you find one please post it here!
Me too! Please post if you find it. I'd like to see if it works better do connecting to my work's exchange server. HTC's app doesn't work, but I tried with the default mail app in the 2.1 emulator and the stock app works.
Actually, is the messages apk the email app too or is that just for sms?
Thanks,
Nick

Just SMS...
What I hate about the HTC Sense messaging application, is that it's dumb. It tries to send SMS from any phone in the contact list. It doesn't go to the 'mobile' by default. I was trying to send an SMS, and it choose the 'office" land line of my contact to send the text. I was trying to find a way to set the 'mobile' phone as default for messaging, but couldn't find the setting.
anyone have this? i'm looking for it as well.
I hope some good soul will upload this. I'm looking for this as well. I really hate that the htc sense messaging app does not have an auto delete feature. This is included in the vanilla message app of 2.1. It's not really hard to delete old messages every now and then but having it automatically done brings make things easier. heck, even wildfire's htc sense messaging app has this!
Hi,
Sorry if this is the wrong forum, feel free to move my topic.
On my Android phone (Motorola Milestone) I have several apps that integrate into Contacts: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, LastFM.
Android makes a good effort in merging the contacts automatically, or I can merge them manually. Some people compain about the automatic merge and I know about the bug reports, but for me it's good enough.
What bothers me however, is that I cannot set what type of contact has "priority". For example, I have a merged contact that consists of a Gmail contact (containing full name, address, phone, email), a Twitter contact (containing nickname, full name, profile pcture) and a Facebook contact (containg full name, phone, email, profile picture). In the Android contacts list this person may be shown as either with his full name or his nickname. It is completely random. I have not found a way to force this merged contact to be shown with full name. I just want an option to say "this person is called X, dammit".
Any ideas?
I'm sorry but... *bump* ?
same here.
It is driving me crazy.
Any solution?
Running Milestone 2.1
Yeah, would love to know this as well!
Thanks!

Would love to get a fix for this too!!
*bump*
I'm now running Froyo on my Milestone, but I still haven't found a way to do this.
Yet another *bump*
I'm going to try something incredibly dirty: install the .apk of the HTC contacts app, because this allows to set the visible name.
Is there no app on the market that allows easy editing of contacts?
Anyone tried any apps and if so then why not post the app name and whether it was useful or otherwise. That could help everyone else trying to solve their contacts cloud issues.

Using hero on stock from but rooted and removed crap applications...thax to everyone...
I bought this cellphone for the business use. I'm having more than 1000 clients and i've added them in the group. But my bad luck, system's sms application is just sending sms to just 40 numbers of a group.
Later i used HANDSCENT sms but it is also not providing support..and its too much slow ohhh god...i had to uninstalled it...so much errors..
CAN ANYBODY HELP ME OUT WITH THE SMS APPLICATION WHICH CAN SEND THE GROUP SMS (Specialy unlimited). I mean should not restrict the upto certain numbers. SEND TO UNLIMITED PEOPLE at a time

I used gosms for a while. I really like the features, but whenever I would restart my phone, it would resend some messages to a few people once in a while. Really annoying! I just switched back last week to handcent
I have recently got the X10i after yrs of a N95 ( sorry ), am doing my best to like the phone and am giving it every chance. I have lurked on this site and last week I rooted the phone and made it more personnal for me, thanks to the developers and those who provide the info for rooting.
I quickly removed the moxier stuff and also the messaging app but I am having issues with handcent sms, I wanted it for group/bulk texting tbh but it seems I have to restart the phone to get it to send a text to a group which has got 18 recipients.
Once the phone has started up I can send a group text no probs but the second group text will send to 1 or 2 of my contacts but the rest then fail, so I then restart the phone and resend the text and they get delivered, I have tried chompsms, grouptext and groupui, but each one gives me the same problem.
Has anybody got any ideas or another app I could try to resolve this issue ?
maybe it could be that the sms apps you use need (or work thanks) the main messaging app which were installed on the phone, the one you uninstalled.

I dont think it is that to be honest, I think it is more to do with the amount of contacts in the list, so I am hopeful that somebody confirms this and also gives me a better option.

Actually this could be true, as you should not remove core system applications, such as messaging.
so, you can try resetting your phone using Update Service software on your pc. I tried searching for an SMS app in my mobile folder to share with you, but there are several files that may be connected togheter, about messaging, and I am not able to choose the right one (or ones) to share.
Maybe some one else has an idea or maybe a fix. people that i have an email address for or another number show up different if i send them a text. It lists their name and then their phone number. I would it rather jsut show their name liek it does for people in my contacts that just have 1 number and no email
I found the HTC messenger app so crappy I replaced it with handscent. Things are much better. Took a bit to get handscent as the default messenger but it works great.

One more reason I cannot wait to load CM7
Add that to the list of things HTC Sense blows at... and counting...
