I really really hate the mms app that comes with the Droid Incredible. It's slow, and clunky. I really don't even know how they allowed it to come with the phone. I wanted to uninstall it but was told it may interfere with the HTC stuff. Well.... I uninstalled the default mms.apk and installed the Vanilla mms.apk which is SOOOOOO much better then what HTC gives us. It's so smooth and I have the nice little green messaging icon I haven't had any issues so far.
SMS sent/received - TESTED
MMS sent/received - TESTED
Remember, what you do is at your own risk, I am not responsible for anything.
Be sure you make a nandroid backup, of course and root is required.
To mount \system folder:
1. Reboot into recovery mode (Power device down then hold power button + volume - or optical key instead of vol -)
2. choose partitions
3. choose mount \system
Navigate to C:\sdk\Tools in a windows command prompt
adb shell /system/bin/rm /system/app/Mms.apk <<<<<<<<<<<< File name must match file.
Remount system when complete and reboot.
Attached file is the Vanilla mms.apk, install it when you reboot your phone.
All text messages should be saved, FB integration is still there.
Side note, with the stock mms.apk removed you can use just Handcent for SMS, but MMS won't work.

I'm up for trying this. Hate the one that comes with sense, always locks up because I have a lot of people I stay in contact with, and deleting them makes my phone freeze
gonna try this soon!
Just mounted my system and tried typing out the command, says directory doesn't exist? but the system wasn't showing up as accessible via My computer (was there, but when i clicked it, asked me to insert disk(x:/) ). Odd, I just opened my system to put in some new audio sounds about 10 min ago and it worked fine.
Edit: Needed to capitalize the M in Mms.apk, forgot it was case sensitive

That shouldn't matter if I'm in recovery. I fixed the issue, like i said, needed to capitalize the M in Mms.apk. Might want to note that in the OP haha.

Sorry! lol yeah, I should note that.
Any way to get screen shots of this? I dont like the default MMS/SMS app either but I'd like to see the Vanilla one before I do this.
Thanks.
You sure it's sending messages? mine have a little message box with the timer on them. I've got service, and i can't "resend" the message, so idk if it's working or not.
It should send, it's been doing it for me all morning.

Is un-doing this as simple as deleting the "native" Mms.apk, and installing the "Sense" Mms.apk, via the original instructions?

if you have a backup of the sense mms id imagine just installing it would fix it?
if you did a nandroid before this you could always just go back to that.

Thank you, that makes it so easy.
Quick question. You said "Side note, with the stock mms.apk removed you can use just Handcent for SMS, but MMS won't work." Does MMS work in the Vanilla messaging app though? I realize it says "MMS sent/received - TESTED" but it doesn't say that it works, just that it has been tested.

I meant it works, I guess that's why I put tested.
And yes, MMS/SMS in vanilla works.
definitely nicer, but settings problem
thanks, gave it a shot. I agree, the interface is much nicer.
However-- settings don't stick after a reboot (e.g., notification settings, retrieve while roaming)
Can this be fixed?

I'm hoping this will be quite a simple mod, but does anyone know of a way of removing the Facebook ("f") icons that appear with a contact's Facebook photo?
It's kind of needless anyway, but if you have a contact as a quick link, with the 20 quick links mod the icon drops away from the photo due to the differing size and covers the start of the contact's name - it just generally doesn't look very good.
Any help appreciated!
Anyone have any ideas at all?
As you can see from the picture below it looks terrible and blocks the start of the name:

I wouldn't mind having the "f" icon disappear all the time, even on the main Contacts page, so if there's even a way of just deleting the icon's source that would be fine.
one more way
Just to dowload this pictures do device or card and in contact you can chose this picture without F... The is way, when you don't need modify something at all..

Have you turned off sense UI in home settings and then tried to delete file? and if the file does delete then turn sense UI back on.
I know its a long shot but it may work

I can't overwrite it either. I get an access is denied error.
Do you/anyone else know of a free PC-based registry editor that'll let me search?
Using CeRegistryEditor and can't find the filename in full. Now search for "fb" and the like and will see what I can find.
Also is there any way to actually save the contact pics into outlook. It seems that the pics only stays on he phone and the outlook is not updated after syncing.

It should "just work". I found that the pictures made their way into Outlook via normal synching. Proof of the pudding was when I re-flashed the device and the pictures all came back. How are you synching to Outlook? Over the air or via the device centre?
I too reflashed my device and the contacts were still linked to my facebook contacts. But the contact pictures on my outlook were never updated. Open your outlook to check. I also noted some tags placed by the device on the Notes of the contact. I think this is how the device is able to link outlook contact and facebook friend.
Btw i am using device center W7
I originally started this topic with this:
I won't ask you: "Which ROM is best for me?" as I've done my little research and although I don't know much yet, I've already figured that each and every ROM is different and it is up to me to decide which ROM is right for me. So we are clear on this.
Here is my question:
Which ROM has as least as possible things pre-installed? I want a ROM where I won't have all those applications I am planning on replacing or never even goign to use. Like: Alarm Clock, Amazon MP3, Browser, Calculator, Calendar, Email, Voice Search and so on... You get the idea.
Any suggestions?
I am using HTC MyTouch 3G with AT&T carrier:
SAPPHIRE PVT 32B SHIP S-ON G
HBOOT-1.33.0006 (SAPP30000)

BUT I figured that I could as well just get some kind of application in order to get read of the pre-installed applications?! If there is such application (best if free, but if my best option is to pay for it then it is fine), then could you guys just tell it to me.
Why would you need to remove apps that you won't use just because you won't use them I mean...Browser...why would you remove it ? To regain space on /system? Well then we go for another question...why would you need more space on system partition ? Also removing some apps like Browser can disable some other apps that depend on them. You can of course do it really easily just by extracting the zip file, removing apps don't need, ziping all the files you extracted and then signing the zip file. But I still don't get it
Well all you have to do is before you wipe and flash the rom. Unzip it. Remove all the apps you dont want, then rezip and resign it. Then flash it. Simple yet effective

It is not even about the space they take mb-wise. They take up space in menu. I don't need Browser because I use Opera, I don't need an Alarm Clock because I am using another program for my alarms, and so on. Now that I have like 40 applications and half of them are the original 20 it is hard to navigate, hard to find them, and take a long time to do it too. You see what I mean?
It would even work if I could simply remove a shortcut out of the menu. I don't care for it staying installed in my phone. I just want it out of the menu.
I did and guess what - they loved me.
Advanced launcher does that - hides them from the menu.
Why don't you just put them on your home screens, order them nicely..use folders..

I got a reason to ask for what I am asking for. Trust me before I posted this topic I tried all ways to go around it!
Perfect application! Does what I need and more! Accept I am facing one problem. I created a couple of folders and I can't add shortcuts inside now... For example if I were to create a regular folder on home screen, then I would enter it and click on "menu" button and then click "add". Problem with the folders in the launcher is that when I enter them the "add" button is grayed out.
Any ideas?
...
Unzip the ROM, replace the Launcher.apk with Advanced Launcher's, sign and flash.
Or just download the 1.6 version from the market.

Nope... When I grab an icon and try to drop it in a folder my whole launcher is being moved as if I was scrolling it... and then if I grab and hold it long enough then that gets my launcher minimized and sends me to my home screen so that I can drop it on my home screen.

You could simply just move everything you want to see onto the home screen and ignore the rest by not bringing up the launcher.
Or you can use slidescreen pro, and set only your desired apps on the top 2 rows.
Sounds almost like you want Android: Preschool Edition.
you can remove apps with root explorer by browsing to the app folder and deleting them from there..
you can also delete them via terminal by these commands...
su
mount -o remount,rw /system
rm /system/app/NAMEOFAPP
and replace NAMEOFAPP with the name of app you want to remove

aw i finally got it. for some dumbass reason, i thought all my voicemails were somehow cached on vzw side (ya i know..just realized how stupid that sounds). anyway deactivated gvoice & deleted quite a few voicemails until i got to my new one.
sorry for thread hijackin but i have the exact same problem; except its not with voice mail, its with SMS.
I got it when i bought an SMS-ticket for a bus-ride, thing is i sent an sms to a number and was suposed to get an sms back from another number confirming that i bought the ticket and some serial numbers and stuff in it, but i cant find it in my inbox. Although, i have 1 new sms with a red little 1 like the pic, and i have 1 new SMS in the notification bar thingy up top...
at the moment, i have no idea how to fix this, and i've done some reading but cant find any solution. i only have 2400 sms in my inbox atm which should be quite low and not violate some 9300+ bug or whatever that is...
halp pritty plox.

Installed the update. Still not working, only now it is worse than before.
It still wouldn't allow me to switch apps, it still didn't launch on phone boot up, but now the update prevented me from being able to install apps from the Amazon App Store. I'd hit the install button after the app had downloaded, but it wouldn't register the button press. I could hit the cancel button though just fine. Play Market apps installed just fine. As soon as I Force Stop Fast5, I cold install apps from Amazon just fine.
Very weird. It works perfectly on my device (SGS2) and my friends devices and all emulator devices (2.1+) and i do not get other complains... what's going on?
Have you installed custom rom or something? Do you see all 5 icons? After pressing nothing happens? Or an error?
I would understand if you'd get some errors, but if it's not booting with the device? There is no way it won't boot at normal device configuration...
Thank you for you cooperation!

Yep it's a switcher. Will change topic name, sorry. But it works fine for you, right?
It works now on ICS too. There should be a new version active on the market within 1 hour (as always). There was one issue. Fixed.
I will test it. Great job
Edit: "error process buy" say my market
Defy > Defy+
Sorry my bad english
Error process buy? Lol... it's free. Did you try do it from the PC? Market kinda buggy thing. Thanks!
I had no problems with installation nor application so does my friends .
Updated version has been released. Should be working fine for everyone, regardless of Android version (2.1 +).
Try it
the update fixed task-clicking on ICS
- could you please add #111111 as an background color option? that's the color used by android for notification backgrounds
- when opening notification area the icons reorder after like 1-2 seconds. I guess that's because the app isn't running in bg permanently but it's still quite annoying, especially when you're just about to hit one of the icons and then it gets replaced with a adifferent one
- is it possible to have more than 5 apps? (yeah yeah, then the name wouldn't make sense anymore, but...) there's so much whitespace between the icons, it'd well fit 7 of them
Sure. No problem. Download an updated version (should appear on the market within one hour) and tell me if you'd like something more. Everyone else too . I'll see what i can do.
As for 7 icons instead of standard 5 on really large screens: could you please send me an email or post me here if you don't mind everyone looking how do it looks on your screen?
Thanks!
thanks for adding ICS color.
for large screen: just turn your phone 90° to widescreen and you can see it for yourself
any idea about the slow updating?
Check out the newest update (v 1.08). Tick a checkbox in preferences, restart an app and see if that fits your needs . As for more than 5 icons - i'll figure it out if you want to
Cheers!
seems good so far. will report back after some more usetime when it's got a bit more to do than show low-memory-apps what does the checkbox do? start a persistant service?
could you please close the notification bar when selecting an app? always makes me think the click wasn't registered.
No, it just shortens update time . Don't worry if it works right . As for notification: will put an option to do so shortly.
Cheers!
This app blocks the 3rd Party App Install on my device (Motorola Defy). You can still press the cancel button, but the install button has no function.
Tested it on a custom CM7 Version and on a Official CM7 Version(with fullwipe).
I've been a fan of DashClock for a long time. But one thing that always seemed misssing about it was that the SMS extension built into it didn't show the contents of the messages you have received. I thought that this couldn't be too hard, and it wasn't.
I grabbed the DashClock SMS extension source and modified it to display the sender in the top part, and the message text in the bottom part. As of version 0.5 it now supports viewing up to 3 separate message threads (as long as you enable that option). As of 0.6 it supports leading to Hangouts. As of 0.7, the issue on Samsung devices (only tested on S3 running stock 4.3) is resolved.

0.3: Redone based on Dashclock 1.5 update. Hopefully this addresses the MMS problems people were having, but I have no way to test.
0.4: You can now view all unread messages instead of the latest one if someone sends you multiple messages. (See picture)
0.5
Multiple panels for multiple message threads
Ability to switch message, sender
Settings for each of the above
Bugfix for extra line at end of panels
Status (the small number at top when your lock slider is showing) shows number of messages per convo when multiple panels enabled, number of unread convos when not enabled.
0.5.1
Bugfix: 3rd panel would display 2nd panel messages (unless switch sender/contents was checked)
Code cleanup
0.6:
Bugfixes, lots of them.
Uses method of leading to SMS threads compatible with Hangouts.
Option to manually forward the app to Hangouts, in the case this is needed. (more than 4 unread conversations or multi-panel unchecked)
0.7:
Now works with TouchWiz (But if you're on TouchWiz do yourself a favor and flash a custom ROM, if possible ) Thanks to my dad for letting me test on his work phone.
Updated Slovak translations from pyler.
0.8: Attempt at fixing problem where contents would not show up. Seems to fix when it happens to me but this is on limited circumstances.
0.8.1: Fixed another problem where contacts/messages could not be read.
To do:
Read MMS (group messages, say something about a picture) - as of .5 I found a way to do this. But not a way to test.
It's not tested on Sense devices (it was reported to be also not working on them). But the fix for Touchwizvshould also fix it for Sense devices.
Bug fixes, as they come up
If it becomes popular enough, onto the Play Store!

Great idea - I can't understand why no-one else thought of this sooner!
Awesome work! Other extensions that do the same thing required Accessibility Service to work, but would force close some apps for some reason. Yours doesn't require Accessibility Service and is working great.
Awesome utility, works great! Think you could code the same thing for Whatsapp?
Great work!
Here is Slovak translation

I would if I knew it was possible, and I had a means of testing it while I started it up. I have no idea if there's an API or the notifications can be read. Try this though.
hello, this extension can wake the screen when you get a notification?

No, but try this:
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dberm22.SMSWakeUp&hl=en
I just needed to say that I love this app.
I did find one bug in it though.
I have my MMS messages set to not automatically download (thanks to Sprint being kind of dodgy sometimes).
So, sometimes when I get an MMS, this will incorrectly show a seemingly random old text message (although it does show the correct sender).

It probably is how it reads the message thread when you have an MMS. I'm not really sure how I would fix it, it's probably a problem in the original DashClock code.
Updated to version 0.3, check the first post! Hopefully it addresses MMS problems, as the main DashClock dev redid a lot of the code to run the base SMS extension, but I'm not sure if it will actually change anything. Maybe in .4 I'll work on a workaround.

Install DashClock from play store, and then go to its menu and add SMS Viewer.
Will test soon
Huge Wallpaper Collection
Does not work with sliding messaging
Sadly it only shows "new message" instead of the contents. I am on a pacman rom using the stock messaging app.

same with latest version of Dash Clock and AOKP
UPDATE
Just use version 0.2.1. It appears that rebasing made it not work right.
From a technical point of view, the messageID value (which is used to seek the right thread and message in the thread) that the old code gave is DIFFERENT than what the new code gives, and the new code's value makes it run wrongly.
I apologize for the problems...in the coming week I'll try to release another update that adds some features.
