list of apps you can safely delete from captivate once rooted - Captivate General

hey guys, i'm going to be picking up my captivate in a few days and i plan on rooting/deleting the att "bloatware" asap. based on the preloaded files that are listed on the engadget review (see http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/22/ samsung-galaxy-s-review- shootout-captivate-for-atandt-and-vibrant/), is it safe to delete the following files?
ATT preloaded
ATT family map
ATT hot spots
ATT maps
ATT music
ATT navigator
ATT radio
instant messaging
mobile banking
mobile video
Where
YPmobile
Samsung preloaded
Daily briefing
My files - replace with Astro file manager
Media hub
Mini diary
Memo
MobiTV
Video Player - my understanding is you can play videos directly from stock gallery app
Write and Go
Voice Recorder
Voice Search - is this the same as google's own voice search?
Also for keyboards, can we delete the built in samsung keyboard? I've played around with both the samsung and stock one and there's really no difference, however swype is amazing.
thanks for all help. you guys are the reason why android is so awesome.

One of the threads around here had some guy running into problems when he deleted that Where app. Maybe it was because he deleted other things to I'm not sure, but I would like to see an official list before I completely strip out all of the unnecessary junk.

There's a post here with apps that are safe to remove - I'm sure more could be removed but I don't know which off the top of my head.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728989

After I removed 'daily briefing' from the list of apps, when I slide the homescreen over to the left where daily briefing used to be, it gives a "problem loading widget" screen. Can another widget be put in its place?

Of course. Just hold-click the widget and throw it in the trash can that pops up. Then hold-click the desktop and add whichever widget you like from the list. The uninstall just didn't remove the widget reference.

Never mind, I figured out what I needed to do, but couldn't go back and delete my post. Thanks for your help, though.

Yes, just drag that widget to the trash.
And I never had any problems either after deleting the Where app.

Drop the samsung widgets

Prior to purchasing my Captivate I was concerned about the lag I keep hearing about. After playing with the phone for a couple days I have been assured it is not a hardware problem. The only way I am able to get the phone to lag or slow is when there are Samsung Widgets loaded. If you remove all the widgets provided by Samsung the phone is as smooth as butter. I have several market apps/widgets running and I can not get it to stutter. I even have an older version of Fancy Widget on the home screen.
If some other people could double check this and see if they get the same result it would be appreciated. If this is the case then, the fact that the phone comes crammed with AT&T and Samsung software and cut down android widgets is just appalling.
I'm using LauncherPro with the stock Samsung widgets removed (obviously), Beautiful Home widget, and a live wallpaper. This device as fast as heck with those 3 things.

Did you uninstall the samsung widgets or just removed them from the home screen?
I have uninstalled the AT&T apps but was unsure about ditching the Samsung apps as I was concerned that they may be required for some function of the phone...

im running launcherpro + fancy widget. No samsung widgets (im not even sure how you run them without touchwiz) but mine runs smooth as butter. My only lag experience is when i open up the gallery because it is somehow connected to my picasa account and there is a slight lag when connecting.
same thing here... how can you disconnect picasa so it doesnt show your album uploaded?
Come to think of it, the very first thing I did was erase all the junk on the homescreen and install my own stuff. And I've never had any slowdown problems. Except when I did install the samsung widget that added the rolodex buddy thing. It would occasionally stutter when swiping over that homescreen page. I uninstalled it. Maybe that's the problem everyone is having.
I'm using Touchwiz without the default widgets and have experienced no lag.

[Q] Cleaning up the bloatware - Kidzone?

I tried searching the forums and found nothing...
Like a lot of others, i dont like most of the applications that come bundled on my phone and like to get rid of most of them. I cant seem to figure out what .apk file to remove to get rid of the "Kidzone" application. Any ideas?
If any root-level file explorer works, download Absolute System from the Market. It's about two bucks but it's worth it. You can use it to remove any bloatware from your device.

Not in this case. We do not have S-OFF.
Freezing the apps with titanium backup lasts between reboots, luckily. Won't remove them completely but they will be prevented from running or showing in the app drawer.
Only problem is I'm having trouble finding the package names of a couple bloatware apps, namely kidzone, highlight, friend stream and t-mobile mall. If anyone could find the names of those packages it would be great. I'll look up the names of the apps I did find in a little while and post them for you.

also tried removing the app pack, and it does not remove "kidzone"
Kidzone appears to basically be a locked down version of the home screen that only lets you turn on Youtube, Internet, Bejeweled, and T-Mobile TV from that screen. It requires you to setup a password for the lock screen. It appears to be built into sense. It's not really an application. Mostly a replacement lock screen. There's nothing "kid" about it honestly.

I second that request!
I made a thread in "themes and apps" about cleaning up bloat - still no luck on kidzone though.
I am fiddling around with dumping sense now, that will probably do it. I'll post back here if I can figure out how to make kidzone go away.
Meantime - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16739548#post16739548
okay - sorry to post after myself but I got rid of kidzone.
First, I restored a CWM backup I made right after root/busybox installation.
So, my phone state is fresh S-OFF/Root with SU & busybox installed.
It may be important to note that I did a factory reset to my phone just before S-OFF/Root & had a freshly formatted MicroSD card.
I then installed ADW Launcher from the Market, and hit my "home" key. Selected "Use Default" and chose ADW Launcher.
Now my phone defaults to ADW as it's launcher.
I then installed "Absolute System" from the Market, and used it to remove "HTC Sense"
Closed out Absolute System, then scrolled between all 5 ADW desktop screens, powered down the phone, then powered up again. (*NOTE fastboot = off)
Booted fine, was able to ditch sense without issue, and KIDZONE IS GONE!
As always, make sure to do a fresh system backup before messing with anything like this, but Kidzone is linked to sense, and replacing sense with another launcher will remove it.
HTC Sense was the only app removed from the phone, and I haven't checked everything to make sure it works yet, but no HTC crash report to send, and no force close issues. (yet - to be determined)
I've been itching to ditch sense since I got the phone, and this was my first quick test at it. Works good so far.
Edit to add:
Checked the "personalize" option at the top of the "settings" list. This just brings you back to the main desktop, doesn't throw an error.
I knew this one thing would be messed up somehow after ditching sense, but the fact that it doesn't make a problem and just closes the menu is fine by me.
I'll spend the rest of the day testing out my phone without sense to see how it runs. I'll post back how it went tomorrow.
Edit - 11/01/2011:
When I said "without sense" I meant without the sense launcher. I expanded on and clarified that in another thread (that app thread) but never cleared it up here.
To fully remove sense is one heck of a project, and will take much more then just switching your launcher.
This is great info - but with this last method - can you still use the stock/factory camera app? Is the camera fully functional, it might not be a big deal to some but would be cool to retain full factory camera functionality.
Wow, feels like going back in time -
Yep, stock camera app works fine.
It's tied to sense, and there is no true AOSP ROM out there yet, so pretty much no matter what you do you should keep stock camera functionality.
Actually, keeping the stock camera functionality/app is the main reason why there is no AOSP ROM yet, it's been generally decided that losing that would be...undesirable.
Kidzone is part of Rosie.apk, which is the Sense launcher. You lose it once you switch to another launcher (adw, go, etc...) and uninstall rosie.apk

•Mail Widget
•Media Room
•Message Widget
•Music Visualization Wallpaper
•Notes
•Peep

Here's another thread talking about "killable" apps.

it is auto contact backup for t-mobile.
also i removed sywpe and its work fine with regular android keyboard. much better
yeah i noticed all this crap under running services yesterday when I looked the first time. I had two 'calendar' programs running to (10mb and 6mb each, WTF?)
I thought this phone was lightening fast, I can only imagine it would be 110% better w/o all this stuff running..
I've noticed a HUGE increase in battery life after freezing a bunch of these. I want to keep going and see what else i can freeze without any issues, but I'm afraid to go too far and wind up messing up my phone...

On one hand, you're absolutely right. For those living so far from civilization, sometimes a wifi network is your only option. For me, I like to avoid unpopulated areas for a variety of reasons and am just trying to make phone calls without using their cell network (in a fashion that doesn't require any additional cost for me or additional download on the other end).
I've been mainly killing apps that show up in the running services list.

Thanks for the contributions in this thread, they helped me get started on this.
No idea what the SWMC is, I thought it was something to do with swype, but now i'm thinking it has something to do with registering gestures on the screen. Not altogether too sure, but working on it.
What are you guys using to freeze these apps? Titanium backup? tnx
One app I would delete is the preinstalled notepad app, because it always seems to be running in the background. I deleted it and installed Color Note.
And yes, I use Titanium Backup, free version, and simply uninstall apps I don't want.

[Q] Soundhound: No Icon After Install?

After installing Soundhound, does anyone have the issue where there is no icon in the app menu/drawer? Thanks.

Same here, although I can access soundhound and tunein from the music app...
Never had this issue.
My Soundhound Icon is here sitting on my apps menu.
Just wondering... Do you have your apps menu to show All apps?
Mine is still there, however the girlfriends is having that issue...
*Edit1* Did some digging, there are more apps having this same issue. Mounted to the computer and found some files in .android_secure, turns out it's the missing ones. Funny thing happened while I was typing this out, HTC actually called me regarding another issue I have been dealing with and I informed them of this issue as well. He tested and saw what we see. He'll be getting back to me tomorrow on both issues. I'll update once I know more.
*Edit2* Uninstall soundhound, and reinstall from the market. This will automatically create a new icon on your home screen, but it still won't show up in the app drawer. Good temp fix. Also, using the built-in google search widget you can find your installed apps that don't show up, including Tune In Radio, which I have never seen in the app drawer.
Sent from my HTC VLE_U using XDA
Same issue here. The icon for tunein radio disappeared out of the blue from the home screen and the list of all installed apps. The only way to get to it is through "settings- apps- all".
*Update*
HTC Called me back last night. They are still running tests and will be working on this all week. They plan on contacting me back by/on Friday evening. They are also testing the calender notification issues.
Wow- please keep us updated. Thanks!

List of apps i can safely remove or freeze.

Hey Community,
I been searching for the past 3 days on this forum. Can someone tell me or direct me to a list of apps that are safe to remove from the HTC One S...
THanks
Pretty much anything you want as long as you don't remove core asps that you need for your phone to function.
For example, I remove the stock browser, live wallpapers and wallpaper picker, picasa uploader, some of the gapps, and any launchers I don't use.
Just don't delete system ui or anything like that lol

If I've helped hit the thanks button
Deleting maps app yields most performance , quadrant scores go through the roof
Sent from my One S while ducking the xda police.
If it helps, I've disabled these apps (running stock unrooted by the way):
411 & More (T-mo service)
Access T-mobile
Bonus Apps
Friend Stream
Friend Stream Lock screen
Friend Stream Widget
Game Base
Google Play Movies
Google+
Lookout Security
MobileLife
More for Me
News & Weather
Polaris Office
Slacker Radio
Stock Widget
Stocks
Stocks Lock screen
T-mobile Mall
T-mobile TV
Twitter
Twitter for HTC Sense
Twitter Widget
Watch
Watch Widget
Weather
Weather Widget
Zinio
You can probably safely remove these as well, but disabling them is just as good. The apps don't start, and it doesn't drain my battery like task killers would (services start and restart; disabling in ICS keeps them off)
