I like the easy slide toggle between camera and camcorder on the N1 camera app.
The slide out menu, then select camcorder then slide back on the stock Legend camera app is such a pain.
Is it possible to get a version that will work on the Legend?
Im hoping someone will develop some kind of camera replacement app in the future, one that is much quicker less features just does the job.
The htc version on 2.1 legend is pretty slow and sluggish for no reason. ;(

Hey all,
I know last time Paul O'Brien ported HTCCamera.apk to the N1, but I haven't seen any announcement of the version from 2.2 being ported. Googling turns up nothing. Has this been accomplished?
I just moved over to CM6rc3 and am missing my tap-to-focus :-(
The latest nightly has tap-to-focus on the camera.
I just found it on 6.0.1 - you tap the settings icon from within the camera app and then scroll down to an area where you can set tap to focus, autofocus, or none.
That is one of the very few things that is keeping me from CM6... the HTC camera app allows you to tap to focus as well as auto focusing when you actually take the picture.
The CM6 camera app only allows one or the other... so if you use tap to focus and suddenly need to focus on something else, you have to tap again. And auto focus is much slower than the HTC app in my opinion.
It's a good camera app, you just can't rely on it to take a quick picture. You'll have to hope whatever you're trying to shoot sits still for a bit.
From what I've read in the Dev forum for CM on the MT4GS, CM will never have the stock camera app that came with this phone.
One of the bigger features of this phone's camera is the near zero-lag camera shutter. Is that a hardware feature and thus continues to exist under the AOSP camera app or is it a software feature and therefore either not possible without the factory camera app or is possible with a 3rd party camera app?

There are more options than just those 2 - go to the market and check out camera360 for starters...

I didn't see anything in the description for camera360 mentioning the zero lag "shutter".
You're right, and the shutter isn't bad, but it's not "zero" lag. Anything other than sense is never going to be able to use the sense camera so it's a tradeoff. The usability of the CM7 camera is still really good and the effects/addons of camera360 rival the sense apk so i'm happy. It's worth me holding my hand still for .5 seconds to get the tradeoff in speed and stability from other ROMs; but that's why there's something for everyone.
If I find a reference to the 'zero lag' shutter speed at some point while browsing through HTC kernel source, i'll post it here. If so, we can go from there to work this in to something different, like cm7.
No promises that even if it is found it can be ported, for all I know it could be software in the HTC camera app itself, I haven't gone through the app to see. It could also be defined in the HTC sense frameworks...or maybe it is a hardware feature that just needs support coded.
Who knows, but i'll be on the lookout for anything having to do with this. If I stumble across any information i'll post here. That way even if I can't find the time or figure out how to work with it, others might be able to.
This may, or may not help:

They go into how the zero shutter lag works here, and basically, it's a hardware feature that requires specialized software (the camera application) to work with it.
I have a feeling that any camera application that uses the standard camera APIs won't be able to take advantage of the zero shutter lag bit. But that's just a guess.

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich camera
Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich also brings some much-needed improvements to Google's camera UI, which the company says it has been working on with Samsung.
ICS devices, and the newly announced Samsung Galaxy Nexus in particular, will have 1080p video, zero shutter lag, a new picture-stitching panorama mode, easier sharing and Instagram-esque filters.
In the panorama mode, you can start taking the picture and then move the camera. The phone assembles the full range of continuous imagery into a single panoramic photo.
Android 4.0 ice cream sandwich
"When taking pictures, continuous focus, zero shutter lag exposure, and decreased shot-to-shot speed help capture clear, precise images," says Google. "Stabilized image zoom lets users compose photos and video in the way they want, including while video is recording. For new flexibility and convenience while shooting video, users can now take snapshots at full video resolution just by tapping the screen as video continues to record."
There's also built-in face detection as well as tap to focus.
Android 4.0 ice cream sandwich
There are also various editing tools included, too, while there's sharing via Google+, message, Bluetooth, email or Picasa upload.

There's also an improved gallery widget, as well as new album layout with larger thumbnails.
Thankfully you can also now take screenshots - this is going to make our job a whole lot easier!
For video, there's also Live Effects you can apply to distort faces or alter backgrounds.

** this is what we have to look forward to with Android 4.0. Pay attention to the part in BOLD.

But realistically we're not going to see ICS CyanogenMod for probably 2-4 months, right?

Realistically, we'll start seeing bits and pieces of it as soon as the source drops.
i really like the stock camera on the inspire but sometimes when taking a picture of myself/myself with someone its really hard to find the shutter button on a screen thats facing away from you and the "self-portrait" option doesnt work too well.
with that said is there a way to remap one of the volume buttons or possibly even the power button so that while in the camera app it can be used as a shutter button?
the app "Vignette" does this but i've noticed it takes a few seconds longer to load the camera than the stock camera app and often when i pull out my phone to snap a pic i need it to work as fast as possible. it also disables zooming for some reason. also it would be nice if there was a free alternative, im not a fan of paying for apps
i tried this apk but it gives me an error telling me my phone does not have root access, which it does.
i have the insprire 4g with stock rom sense 2.1 rooted with the ace hack kit
You could install a custom Rom that has a built in function to do this. The rom I use has this feature and is gingerbread with sense 3.5. I know there are other roms that can do this as well. No apps from the market will be able to utilize the capabilities of the sense camera. Cyanogen also has this feature but has a terrible camera so if you like taking pictures, I would stick with a custom sense Rom.

i see, thanks for the info. i still dont feel comfortable flashing rom's on my phone, im new to this whole thing and have a lot of reading to do.
i am using golauncher and a bunch of other things from the "go" series and i am very happy with the layout of the UI, so i see no real need to mess around with other roms honestly, and i dont think the want for a physical camera button is enough for me to risk messing something up
Hi all, I've wondered if you guys use some more "professional" camera apps.
I really liked Sense camera with a lot of options like manual macro, manual iso, etc.
Right now I'm on CM9 and don't really enjoy stock app... I've got the feeling that it has too little options and takes pictures of worse quality.
Do you have any suggestions which app would do better?
The Sense camera app relies on the Sense framework, so installing that one isn't an option. You could give Camera FX a shot.
Thanks for help, I've been using FXCamera for some time, but suddenly on Market I've found CameraPRO and I think I'll go with this one. Anyone tried it??
The on-going debate about the S3's camera when using Touchwiz vs. an AOSP ROM made me wonder about the camera apps itself. Which camera app do you primarily use? Coming from the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, I actually miss the AOSP camera app (where you have the touch-wheel that lets you adjust settings on the fly). The stock TW camera app isn't quite as intuitive (e.g. to change white balance, I have to press the Options button and scroll down through a litany of settings just to change it).
I've been tempted to try OTHER camera apps, like Camera MX. Does anyone have a preference?
Snap camera. Easy. Love it. There is a thread here somewhere where the developer is active in it.

I had been using this camera https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.moblynx.camerajbplus&hl=en until getting onto 4.3.1, whenever I use a 3rd party camera, it's fails and then no app can connect to the camera, I have clear the cache and dalvik cache to get the stock camera to work. But if the the jb+ camera works for you I'd recommend it. I use this camera when I'm not in a rush https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.flavionet.android.camera.pro&hl=en (there's a lite version too I think) It just gives you complete control of your camera. It's great for arty fartsy stuff but if you need to take a quick photo it might not be the best the app.
Stock Camera
I use the stock camera, but I just downloaded VSCO Cam, I'll see if its any good.
sspencer10
KITKAT 4.4 From the best! sspencer10 best rom for 4.4 try it out hes doing a great work on that room 4.4 camera is running very smooth i love it but i alwayz keep my stock camera hehe
Currently using stock AOSP 4.4 camera, but I have withdrawals from TW camera, and dreams of the Note 3's camera. Anyone know of a camera the has slow/fast motion, panorama, multi-shot, and HDR modes?
camera fv-5 excellent. lots of options but perfect Samsung note camera that's on most roms
