This may be common knowledge to all, but in case it is not:
1) To disable the start up sound, in the /etc directory, rename the file PowerOn.wav to PowerOn.wav.bak.
2) To disable the shutdown sound, in the /system/media/audio/ui directory, rename shutdown.ogg to shutdown.ogg.bak.
I did this using a rooted phone with ADB. I am sure there may be an easier way if someone would like to provide further instructions regarding this.
I hope this info helps someone, those sounds very super-loud and annoying! If this info is available elsewhere, let me know and I will remove this post.
Sounds great! Thanks for the tip.
Also, for those that do wish to have startup/shutdown sounds: Rename your favorite sound in the same format as the file you will be replacing and you should have new sounds.
Since we have a lot of Noobs here (no derogatory intent as I was once a noob as well) here is a little bit better explanation:
Startup sound: locate the sound file you want played, convert it to a .wav file format, rename the file to "PowerOn.wav" and remove the original/replace it with your new file.
Shutdown sound: The same above - but the sound file must be in the .ogg file format and needs to be renamed "shutdown.ogg"
The location of the two files can be found in the above post.

Good point. In fact, just replacing these files with modified versions that are a much lower volume might be a good way to go, so you still get the sounds but without them being annoyingly loud.
THANK YOU!!!!!
Or, if you go to settings>sound and display>system volume you can turn the volume all the way down, which effectively mutes the start up/shut down sounds. No need for root or anything like that.
Thank you!
I disabled the startup animation but was still left with the startup sound. Now things are complete. Did you find out where this PowerOn.wav is being referenced? And why didn't they put this in the media folder with the rest???

How did you disabled the startup animation? Is possible to replace it?

Sure, that works if (a) you want to always keep your system sound muted or (b) you always remember to change this setting before rebooting. If you never want the start up or shutdown sounds to play at all, regardless of system volume, then you can rename those files and you never need to worry about it.
All it muted was the startup/shutdown noises... My notifications, ringtones, etc still sound off. Sounds still work on my games. And even with a reboot my settings are still saved.

The sound level of the startup and shutdown screens depends on whatever volume you had your phone at when you shut it down.

Waiting on this too - if we disable the horrid AT&T bars logo animation, I can leave the startup sound and animation for the Galaxy S right where it is! that's the hope at least, disable individual animations instead of a setting like "disable all startup animations"
Startup Video
The Bars video is located at /system/media/bootsamsung.qmg
Renaming this kills both the bars and the Samsung startup

Does this boot faster by removing them? I guess I could sacrifice the cool Galaxy S startup IF it boots faster!
Please forgive me, I'm a total noob when it comes to android. Can you give me exactly what app you guys use to get to these files and rename them? Thanks.
Install "busybox" from the Market, then install Droid Explorer to view root files
(don't worry, I'm a n00b too, just found those instructions and glad to pass it on!)
Unfortunately, like another user on the other thread, even with busybox installed, I cannot get certain folders to open AND cannot make my file renaming stick - I'll rename a file and click another folder, then go back and it hasn't been renamed! I'm certain this has something to do with busybox, but can't figure it out!

Taking jsmith's suggestion, I've edited the PowerOn.wav sound file down to 1/4 original volume for those like me that don't mind the sound itself, only the ridiculous volume of it.
I am, however, not so skilled at using adb to copy/replace the original in the /etc folder so, any help would be greatly appreciated. I just keep getting permissions errors. Anyway, if someone can offer up specific adb commands for us semi-noobs, it would be a plus. Thanks in advance.

-note: File is zipped; just unzip to get to the .wav file.
I also experienced issues with renaming files and having them return to their previous name. I resolved this by re-rooting the phone, used root file explorer and then moved/copied/renamed as I deemed fit.
You need to remount /system as read/write instead of read-only. This can be done with the mount command or with some file managers like root explorer.

I have been able to customize every sound for my phone except the sound when my phone locks or unlock. Has anyone found the file that needs to be modified in order to change that? I have tried to use many of the lockscreen replacement apps, but none habe satisfied what I'm looking for. TIA.

replace the unlock.ogg with whatever .ogg file you want to use inside the system/media/audio/ui folder. I used my droid.ogg for each time i unlocked the screen, but make sure its the same file name as the one your replacing or it won't work.
edit: I uploaded the droid.ogg file, just rename it to Unlock.ogg before you paste it into the system/media/audio/ui folder.
Hope this helps
be sure to unzip it first lol
I have tried to change these files with no success. What exactly is a .ogg file? Will any media file work if I change the extension to .ogg? ie: .mp3 to .ogg? Thanks

you need to convert not rename the audio files to .ogg for the phone to play specific unlock/lock sounds.
I have mine set to Ep2 Lightsaber open/close

the .ogg file is inside the .zip i attached, i just can't attach it as an actual file since XDA doesn't allow that format unless its zipped
rename droid.ogg to unlock.ogg
i've done this many times before with all the ROMs i've used and it works as long as its a Froyo rom since it was added in 2.2 for the Incredible.
.ogg is a format thats open source, playable on WinAMP, VLC, and GOM player.
if you need to convert a file that you don't have in .ogg format, use this link to upload it and convert it online.
http://media.io/
it will ask you to browse for the file you want converted, then it will ask you what format you want to convert it to
Hope that helps, if so, please click "Thanks"
I know I posted this in the other lock sounds thread, but I thought I would post it here to for those that may be watching this thread for an answer.
SUCCESS! I was actually able to use a different site using my phone. http://www.online-convert.com/
I then used root explorer to rename and copy the file into the correct system folder. Works great now. My only complaint is that it seems I can't control the volume of the lock/unlock sounds I chose using any of the volume settings. It's always on full blast unless I set to silent or vibrate. Any ideas? Thanks.

I dont think you can adjust the volume of the unlock UI notification within of the basic controls of the volume (RT/Media/Alarm). Only thing i can think of is editing the sound file to a lower volume you can use most audio editors/mixers to do that. Then convert/overwrite
2cents
SUCCESS AGAIN!! I did some research and found out you can change the system volume, which controls the lock sounds, via an app called Audio Manager. I just used the free widget version and lowered my system volume by one or two. Works great. I don't personally use the widget portion of the app. Thanks for everyone's help on this. Hope my trials help someone else find the answers they need.

Big thanks to Biggoron.
This shouldn't effect your phone or harm it but if you screw it up its not my fault always have a backup.
I figured Id do a how to for some new people or those who never thought of this. Anyways....
1. You'll need some kind of root viewer root explorer es file manager etc. (Make sure your system is rewritable)
2. A .wav file is needed so find one you like however if you don't have one or only have a mp3 then use an online converter.
3.Once you have those two go into your root file viewer and find /system then go into the etc file and scroll down until you see a PowerOn.wav if you don't see one then it's fine. However go ahead and delete it and paste your .Wav file sound and rename it to PowerOn.wav Reboot and you should hear your sound playing. I if not your phone sucks ^^ no but then you did something wrong or your kernel may not support it.
UI Sounds
Okay for UI sounds it very similiar except go into the media folder in /system find audio and look in UI folder. For (the touch sound) find TW_Touch.ogg and delete it and paste your .ogg file you'd liked to use I personally just rename the Effect_Tick.ogg to TW_Touch and it sounds like the normal gingerbread touch tone. (Charger Connection Sound) is the Charger_Connection.ogg and the the full battery notification is TW_Battery_caution and lastly the low battery notification is TW_Low_Battery.
Just reboot and the new sounds shall take effect.
Have fun wasting some time customizing your phone.

Here is a bootanimation from Transformers 3 customized to fit to the TF101.
I took the idea from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1220492
So here are the changes I made:
shortened the animation
slightly better quality
removed the S from Transformers

Cool! was waiting for someone to do this!
Looks good.
I made a similar animation once (link below). Did you animate this or rip it from the movie and edit it?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1105038
hi, how u change it? bcoz i try to put on /data/local, dont have any folder local there plus permission denied. im using Revolver 4.1.1
@jschmier: Well you made a very good job on your animation!
This is "just" an edited rip from the movie intro.
@eDaiz:
I'm using the Root Explorer to copy & paste the bootanimation from my sdcard to '/system/media'.
Then you'll have to hit "Mount R/W" on the top bar and just paste the new bootanimation there (I suggest making a backup of the old one using the rename function)

You can drop it in /data/local and set the permissions and it will boot in that bootanimation instead of the one in /system/media. By putting in /data/local you leave your original intact and unadulterated.
I have a whole forlder of these on my tablet and phone and sometimes I'll drop one in my wife's phone's /data/local just to mess with her. Those are fun phonecalls a few minutes later. She's pretty savvy so it doesn't take her long to figure it out.

What permissions do you have to set?
Thanks!

Love this Boot Animation, Looks great on my TF. As mentioned above, It would be awesome if it looped.
For some reason I can't figure out how to change the sound the tablet makes when taping the screen. I can turn it off in the "sound" settings but not change the type of sound it makes. Anyone know how to do this?
You mean you dont love the Samsung bwoop sound

If you are rooted you can manually either rename/delete the actual sound file or replace it with another sound file of your own.
I use Root Explorer myself to do this and I can highly recommend this app.
The sound file is located in /system/media/audio/ui and it's called "S_HW_Touch.ogg".
Note: Your tablet must be rooted to be able to access the /system folder.
If you just would like disable the sound, just rename the file to "S_HW_Touch.bak" or something.
If you would like to replace it, make sure that the file you would like to use is in .ogg format (not sure if you actually need to convert it but do so anyway just to be sure).
Rename the original sound file, copy the new one to /system/media/audio/ui and rename the new one to match the old file name.
Please note that you must mount system as R/W, there is a small grey button in Root Explorer that manages this for you (it's located above the files).
Edit: Yes, you can of course turn off the sound in the Settings....
just sharing my latest creation.

i did not make the original video this was pulled from, if anyone knows who made it or if you made it please let me know so i can give credit.
I simply modded an old video i had into an animation and resized it for optimal quality for G3 resolution.
to install push this file to /system/media and overwrite original (or rename original if you want to save for later or as a backup) then set permissions to rwx rwx r-x and reboot.
to preview this boot animation download this GIF file and watch it.
(link coming soon still uploading file (its large))
my upload failed, i might try it again later but for now i just uploaded a thumbnail so you can get an idea of what it looks like.
If you want to modify this animation for another resolution:
- extract the entire zip file to a folder.
- use faststone phono resizer to change the resolution but don't change the file names or folder names (you can mess up the order of the animation)
- change the resolution in the desc.txt file using notepad++ but don't change the number of lines in the file (you can also change fps: default 12) and number of times the animations play (default 1/3).
- then using 7-zip open the original archive and drop the modified files back into the zip file in the same directory they originated and push it to system/media/ and set permit then reboot.
- you can also change the animation to portrait instead of landscape by highlighting all the image files right click and rotate them to desired orientation, also swap the two resolution parameters in the desc.txt file with notepad++ and put files back in zip like i mentioned above.
- there are other methods but i just put what i thought would be hardest to screw up.
if you run into problems modifying the animation feel free to ask questions but reply to this post so i get a notification as I will probably not be checking this thread.
one thing i forgot to mention is that if you are modifying to portrait you'll need to trim the sides off (like when you resize a landscape wallpaper to portrait which will degrade quality) of every jpg in the animation. This is why i haven't done it yet it's alot of work and the landscape mode will look better just because thats the native orientation of the original video.

that's wierd the blue dots are the 2nd part of the animation it sounds like something is wrong with the first part for you. there is a few things you can try, try downloading the file again and pushing the new file again, maybe something is corrupt. the fact the 2nd part works tells me its not a permission problem. do you have any resolution mods on your phone? what rom are you on?
you could try wiping cache but that's a long shot.
