Restore Stock 1.47.651.1 OTA Rom WITHOUT ROOT - EVO 4G Android Development

There's been some confusion about how to get back to a stock rom without root in case you want to bring your phone back for warranty or return. First off this is basically this method is the first half of this thread from whitslack:
ttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715915
But the forum title is so misleading that when people do a search they will glimpse over it simply because it says it's to root the phone. However, only the second half of the instructions show you how to root it. So... here's instructions on how to do it.
1. Download the stock rom.zip. (For some reason I can't post links so you'll have to find it here = ttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728766&highlight=stock+rom
2. Rename rom.zip to PC36IMG.zip
3. Copy it on the root of your sdcard
4. Power Down or Turn off Phone - (Not Reboot)
5. Hold down Power and Volume Down (Let go when you see white screen)
6. Wait for HBOOT to scan for PC36IMG.zip
7. It will ask for you to accept after scanning - press volume up for yes
8. After finishing - it will ask to reboot - volume up for yes
9. You're done (Stock Unrooted)
Also, yes there is the RUU exe way and if that works for you, great! but there's a lot of people having trouble doing that and if you're here reading this you're probably one of them.

Just run the RUU for that OTA and you'll be back in stock.

That does not work for everyone, this always works.

I don't think this will restore the 1.40 PRI. Can anyone confirm / refute?

I thought this was just to get things back to stock. My WIFI does not work, nor does my facebook contacts sync.
so i don't have root and none of those work..lol wtfff

My PRI shows up as 1.34_003.

ruu for 1.47
I could not verify but when I use the 1.47 when I had wimax wiped out and it put a different MAC address.

Hi, thank you for clarifying. Was searching for some time for how to do this as I need to return my Evo to Sprint.
Do I understand that it's as simple as downloading the file, renaming it, let HBoot run it and that's it?? Really...100% back to stock?
Root will be eliminated, nand will be locked and my custom recovery method (Amon RA) also gone??
I have: (See attached too)

I used this method earlier this week and had my phone replaced by Sprint. It flashed back to stock recovery and Hboot.

What about all the directories in the root location of the SD card?
There's a lot of stuff there, i.e., nandroid, etc....

ROM Manager-Backup Help..

I perma rooted my shift here, and installed ROM Manager. I wanted to backup my current stock rom+root just incase I f#*k something up, under flash recovery image i selected htc evo (cdma) (evo shift is not listed) it says successful but when i click backup current rom, it turns off and is stuck on htc screen...any suggestion??
by the way, i have busybox v1.17.1, updated via busybox app from market.
I don't think RM is supported on the shift yet...
OMG, Just read what you wrote. Um, you installed an evo recovery on your shift? That's not good.
ROM manager, and more importantly ClockworkMod are not yet supported on our device...
There are some versions that "work" -- I say that because they have issues, but have some functionality.
You need to flash your recovery manually with the one from the perma-root thread, using those steps.

If you can boot to recovery I'd recommend running the stock ruu from your computer...that should fix the problem but know it will wipe all data and return you to out of the box stock...you can find it in the development section in the perm root/recovery/stock ruu thread (or something like that not sure exactly what the thread is called)
Edit: ha sorry thats what its called on the android central forum...you can find it still in the development section as speedy ruu

Lol yeaa I have the ruu saved on my pc, question: after I install stock rom can I restore my sys data/apps (minus clockwork) without having problems? (Using titanium backup)
Also I dunno if anyone else is having problems with mobile data but once in a while I have to reboot to get 3g back.

i think you would probably have to root again since not sure you would be able to even access sys data/app without root but not 100% about that and i dont imagine it causing any trouble as long as you get rid of clockwork but again im really not sure at all so i dont wanna say with any certainty.....also i havent had any problems with mobile data so far

One "zip" RUU-Back to stock-2.3 zip removed completely

YOU MUST HAVE ROOT+S-OFF BEFORE THIS WILL WORK. if you are not already s-off, this will not help you.
Here is a file for you. its magic.
need to send your phone back to sprint?
want to go 100% back to stock and start the root process over again?
download the file onto the root of your sdcard.
go to bootloader mood (vol down + power)
when it asks you to press vol up to update, press volume up.
success
have winrar and dont want to erase your bootloader or your Recovery?
simply download the file and delete recovery+Hboot from the inside (do not unzip).
*make sure after you run this PG06IMG.zip to rename it to anything else (like aPG06IMG.zip) or it will ask you if your want to update every time you go to Bootloader and not allow you to fastboot or recovery.
THIS WILL MAKE YOU LOOSE ALL PERSONAL INFORMATION ON YOUR PHONE.
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
.93 hboot-Original Hboot that came with the phone-not s-off
Code:
Common issues:
Cant get device to recognize PG06IMG.img?
Check the file system of your sdcard. Sdcard that came with phone uses a FAT filesystem, which bootloader does not recognize. use a computer to format your sdcard (or use recovery to format sdcard) to exfat or fat32 to clear this issue.
Formatting will wipe your sdcard so make sure you back it up first :)
Download here:

Thanks for posting!
This worked great on my friends phone! I rooted it for her but her phone is acting up and wants to take it back to sprint and this was easy after I formatted her sd to fat32

was going to take my phone into sprint today because my h button on my keyboard quit on me so i used this it was easy and did its thing then i noticed my h key came back to me...so i went ahead and followed the perm root instructions again and im good to go thanks for saving me time and gas money
my friend asked me to unroot their evo, it is running cm7 and has s-on, will this bring it back to factory from that state? i tried the PC36IMG.zip with no luck, then i stumbled upon this...

Same thing here.
Edit: Phone was not rooted, I'm trying to revert back to 2.2 after the phone was upgraded to 2.3 (before I bought it today). Maybe that's why it's not working for me. I downloaded the file from two different mirrors just in case I managed to grab one that was corrupt.

[TOOL][Updated 21-AUG-2011]Inspire Factory Reset/S-ON tool. GB and FR versions.

I'm working on a single-package solution for S-ON full factory reset. It's a PD98IMG type package that, in addition to the program itself, contains the complete factory stock 1.80.502.3 RUU. It runs in three phases:
Overview:
Installs itself as a PD98IMG type package (it contains a stripped down CM6 OS with a single app--the app that does the restoration, the correct radio/kernel combo for gfree exploit, and a data partition containing the RUU); Simply copy the file to the SD card (with an adapter if you can't do it through the phone), rename it to exactly "PD98IMG.zip", then boot into HBOOT (disconnect USB if connected, pull and put back battery, then hold VOL-DOWN and momentarily press POWER).
Boots and runs the restoration program as the only app in the OS, prompting the user at each step to make sure all goes well. The last step copies the RUU from the data partition to the SD card, thereby replacing the PD98IMG.zip that installed everything with the RUU, then reboots to HBOOT for the final phase.
The final phase is loading and running the RUU on the newly restored (S-ON) device to return it to full factory status. The RUU copied in phase 2 is a genuine HTC stock 1.80.502.3 restoration RUU. Allow it to unzip and self-check, then press VOL-UP to write it to the device.
Once completed successfully, you should be in the same condition as an out-of-box new phone.
If you do have to send your phone back for warranty or insurance purposes, it should be a lot easier than the currently available methods.
Important! The newest batch of Inspires shipped from HTC (probably anything bought new after Aug. 2011) have hardware that is incompatible with the hboot in the Froyo update as listed here. If your Inspire is a later model Inspire, do not run the Froyo version on it. Use the Gingerbread version only!
Instructions:
Do a nandroid and/or Titanium backup! It never hurts!
While still in ClockWorkMod recovery, do a "Factory Reset/Wipe Data". This is necessary if you've got an ext4 cache or CM7 dalvik-cache on /cache. If not it will cause boot hang after installation. EXT4 cache will not work with this tool. If your recovery has ext4, be sure you format the cache to EXT3.
Download from the URL below, copy to the SD card and rename to "PD98IMG.zip"
Reboot to HBOOT: Shutdown completely (disconnect USB if connected and pull battery if necessary) then while holding down the VOL-DOWN key, press the POWER key for about half a second. The phone should boot into HBOOT, check the PD98IMG.zip for consistency, then prompt you to install. Select VOL-UP to install.
Once installed, HBOOT will prompt you to reboot by pressing the POWER button. Do this.
The operating system in this tool is a stripped down CM6 install with only the minimum features necessary to run an apk. The apk for the tool will run after the HTC splash screen, then prompt you through the process. Depending on the speed of your SD card, the last step, copying the RUU to the SD card, may take several minutes.
Once successfully completed, the phone will automatically reboot to HBOOT and begin the process of installing the RUU. The only thing you have to do at this point is acknowledge the prompt to install by pressing VOL-UP. (Note: the RUU install may skip a couple of images during the install but this is normal.)
Once the RUU is installed, press POWER to reboot and your phone should be in 100% factory out-of-box condition.
Changelog:
13-SEP-2011 -- Added emphasis to step 2 to drive home the fact that this will not work if you have an EXT4 cache partition.
21-AUG-2011 -- 1.07: Removed "beta" designation. Added both Gingerbread (2.3.3) and Froyo (2.2.2) versions since 2.3.3 is now officially released for Inspire. Cleaned up the launcher a bit, fixed some typos and scrolling issues.
11-AUG-2011 -- 1.06b: Reverted to a PD98IMG that does NOT erase the cache. This was causing boot hangs. There is now a new step 2 in the instructions. Be sure to clear your data/cache.
10-AUG-2011 -- 1.05b: Fixed black screen for some Inspires with different mfg. LCD panels. Added cache wipe to main image as a dirty cache partition could cause bootloops in some situations. Disabled screen timeout so screen doesn't blank out while copying RUU.

I'm actually wanting to flash my phone back to an "out of the box" state, I'm downloading the .zip now, I'll post the results in a few. If this works, you will have made me a happy man!
I'm going to get the Motorola Atrix (I hope it's actually better...)
*EDIT* so I need to have S-ON BEFORE running this package?
I downloaded the above, renamed it, booted to HBOOT, ran the update however I still have S-OFF. Boots to a black screen... (Brick??)
if you have s-on, you probably never rooted in the first place so what are you looking to "restore"?

It worked as it should. S-on and back to stock, very easily. great work.
Nice job, GenePoole. This was well thought out and executed.
is there a specific place to put the PD98IMG or is anywhere fine?
This didn't work for me. I wanted to try out the new Gingerbread release from AT&T and when I run through this process, I'm stuck at a black screen after step 4. I tried twice just to make sure I didn't screw something up. Black screen, both times.
thanks
so i haven't tried this method yet, im wondering if i return my inspire to get a new replacement inspire, will it be as easy to root my new inspire as it was a couple months ago, the reason i ask is because anyone with a rooted evo 4g better take good care of it because if they send it in to get a new one they will be stuck with stock, the new evo 4g is unrootable lol, sucks for them, any ways i just dont want a stock inspire that cant be rooted, thanks for this tool mate, i will surely use it once i know i can root my replacement inspire

The RUU has the default splash screen (white with green "HTC") so I would assume that if you have a custom screen, it will overwrite it, but I have no first hand information. I'll try installing a custom splash on mine and see what happens.

[HOW-TO] ROOT TMOUS OTA 2.3.4 (if you lost root)

For those that lost root due to the TMOUS OTA 2.3.4 update, here's how I got it back.
When i updated, I had to install the stock recovery for the update to take affect. When I reverted back to stock recovery, the update flashed. I wiped my device, however, and thought that I'd be able to keep root and use Titanium. I was wrong, so here's how I fixed it:
Requirements (mostly just reminders not really telling you what to do here....)
1. S-OFF prior to updating
2. Stock Recovery to process the update
3. Disable Fastboot (Settings > Power > Fastboot)
Regain Root on 2.3.4 OTA Update
1. Download the HBoot CWM Recovery and SU flash able ZIP file from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300
2. Place the HBoot CWM Recovery file on the root of your sdcard (i.e.. sdcard/)
3. Power off device
4. Go into HBoot (Vol Down + Power)
5. Flash the CWM Recovery image
6. Reboot
7. Delete the CWM Recovery file off of your sd card
8. Power off
9. Reboot into Recovery (can be selected through HBoot if easier)
10. Choose the SU Root ZIP file that you downloaded in step 1 and flash it
11. Reboot, you're rooted with CWM Recovery again
This method work perfectly for me. I imagine anyone who did the OTA Update and has Rooted their phone would know they went to Stock recovery to apply the update or were always on it.
Thank you for the guide
Noobish question, how did you remove CWM and go back to stock recovery? Perhaps you should add this to the OP.
I was just gonna write this up. Oh well. THANX! I'd press your thanx button but I used them all up already. Maybe a beer?
EDIT: Can you please write up a how-to for going from whatever anyone is on to TMOUS Stock 1.45.531.1 + CWM + Root ? I believe it would be really helpful and I am just too lazy to do it myself
WARNING After installing the OTA, the bootloader now says in pink on the very top
******LOCKED*******
Also, Fastboot flash commands don't work (trying to flash splash image)
HBOOT is now: 1.18.0000
Re-running Revolutionary fixes it. and extended Fastboot commands work again.
And brings it back to 1.17.1111
if someone made a nandroid backup of the ota rooted thru cwm couldnt you just load that instead using the restore option?
As always gents.... Just a tiny tiny bit of patience will go a long way.
If your already rooted through Revolutionary, there is zero need to flash any official FOTA. Not sure why some people seem to want to try it out when they're already rooted? It's NO different than the Euro 2.3.4 OTA. Peeps all over these forums and the web are saying the same thing....no change.
Actually worse if you count the fact that heavy graphically intense games crash now as they do with all stock kernel 2.3.4 Euro ROMs.
Rooted versions of the Tmous 2.3.4 FOTA are already rolling out (birgertime I believe has one out). Give it a day and there will be more that are heavily customized like the ones from Baadz, Lee, Mike etc
It's easy to understand why people want to install the latest official firmware...but if you're rooted and or want to be....there is no need to ever go through official channels (HTC/Tmo) to get your updates.
Just for the people who might be unclear. To everyone else... carry on

Keep one thing in mind though... Your brother in-law & friend should realize that if they do ever one day want to root, they should stay far away from any official HTC updates. HTC will make them agree to an online waiver that will void many parts of their warranty if they choose to use HTC's online unlocker.
If they ever plan on rooting, they should go through Revolutionary....simply because it's the best of both worlds. You can have root, HTC/Tmo will never know.... and you can now get S-ON back after Revolutionary for warranty repairs and such
Quick question. I just got my sensation replaced with a new one(previous one had problems) and it came with 2.3.4 can I still get s-off and root?

WARNING After installing the OTA, the bootloader now says in pink on the very top
******LOCKED*******
Also, Fastboot flash commands don't work (trying to flash splash image)
HBOOT is now: 1.18.0000
Re-running Revolutionary fixes it. and extended Fastboot commands work again.
And brings it back to 1.17.1111

[SOLVED] I tried to root my phone, but...

I used revolution to root my phone, I think it work (havent put any type of rom in it yet); but then i decided to upgrade it to ice cream sandwich. and when i tried to install ice cream i am getting this blank black screen with white triangle sign and yellow exclamation mark + blue droid robot. Any idea what going on? If the operating system is installing properly, how long should I be seeing this screen? I read somewhere that this is a system loading sign, but how long is it going to be like this (must be at least 40 minutes already)
>> download root checker to find out if have or have not root your phone.
-So first question would be, if the phone is root. Can I upgrade it to ice cream sandwich like normal? Or I have to do something else.
>> while doing rooting, dont mess around with OTA update
-I am in a sorta of limbo right now, because i havent figure out what rom to put in. And then opt to upgrade instead. What my best option?.
>>very helpful

-I got revolution to work, install clockworkmod recovery...but not much else. Anything else I need to press forward, or go backward (I have yet to backup my data/phone numbers...)
>>just backup everything and pray! j/k
do everything twice if you have too, and make all the mistakes along the way; that how some of us sorta learn.
Please help ASAP. My phone is in limbo right now!
>>not anymore, , thank you everyone for contributing!
and if at some moments you feel this is sorta over your head, try to get a hold of one of those experts who do up these ROM. They should know these things inside out.
Thank you

Do you mean OTA ICS or a custom Rom ICS?
Hmm if it is the SECOND one you should try booting into recovery via the hboot screen. From there you can wipe data and restart. If the fault occurs again well I have no idea
If you meant an ICS update from HTC then you need to redlash the stock recovery.

It's not that bad, you only have to supercid then flash new firmware once when going to ics. Then its just wiping and flashing

I wish I can say I understand these steps, but it is getting more and more convoluted! any link to a page with steps by steps instruction? kinda feel like i am going into unchart water.
Most Ics Roms require 3.32 firmware and gb Roms require a different firmweare. Most people prefer Ics which is Android 4.0.3 . Once you have the correct firmware is quite a straight forward process. If your S off, you will place the Rom at the root of your sd card. I do this buy downloading to my computer, using my phone as a removable disk drive and copying the file to my device. It goes directly to root not into a folder. Then I enter into my recovery, i love 4ext touch recovery because it has more options and is easy to use. I do a nandroid backup of my current rom, incase something goes wrong. I. Use 4 ext for the backup also. Then I do a full wipe usually wipe data factory reset, then I wipe cash and dalvick cash then I install zip from sd card and reboot. This is how I install a Rom. After flashing it WILL take some time for the first boot so don't worry if it takes a few minutes sometimes. Then it will say Android is upgrading then it will boot into your new rom
I hope this helps you some in the steps to flashing a rom.please remember firmware is very important. Have fun flashing.

Your very welcome, remember this is just the steps to rom flashing. You FIRST must be rooted and S Off to use the procedures. Don't worry too much because once rooted and S off if you get in a pinch flashing you have your backup. But remember correct firmweare is very very important. Hope I've helped you out a bit in the rom flashing area

i believe i am already root and s-off. when you said i have a backup? what backup?!
how do i figure out what firmware i got, and which version is the correct one?.
i think i am going with the ICS route.
Here's some more information:
I downloaded a ROM Manager through marketplace, and when I tried to run it. I get the following error message: "You must root your phone for ROM Manager to function. Superuser was not found at '/system/bin/su' or '/system/xbin/su'. Use google search on your computer to find instructions to root your phone"
I also downloaded Superuser app, and when i click on it, it open up but it said 'no apps in list'!
I downloaded Titanium backup, but when I tried to run it. I get the following error message :"Sorry, I could not acquire root privileges. This application will *not* work! Please verify that your ROM is rooted and include BusyBox, and try again. This attempt was made using the 'su' command"
I download the ruu file ('RUU_Pyramid_TMOUS_1.50.531.1_Radio_10.56.9035.00U_10.14.9035.01_M_release_223976_signed) , tried to run it; and the computer ask what program should i use to open it!?
thanks.
You can download root checker to verify your root it will let you know if root was successful. Ics uses 3.32 firmware. I aquire backup by going into 4ext recovery, manage backup, new backup, backup system. What recovery are you using ? Usually you can backup from recovery. You can download correct firmware in search or usually the rom site will also have the firmware in Android development. Hope this answers some of your questions.

OK...
Pull out the battery...
Replace battery
Hold Volume Down and press power button while still holding volume down.
That will give you the fastboot menu.
Write down what is written in upper left of your screen. (Or take photo).
EDIT :
See attachment, this is what you must have before going a step ahead.

Ok now this is fine.
You don't have root, usually when the line Openxxx is missing it's because you don't have root privileges.
Now download this recovery Recovery PG58IMG.zip
Copy the PG58IMG file into the Root folder of your SD card.
Turn off your phone by removing again the battery and reboot into the Bootloader/HBOOT screen like you just did to gave me your infos.
Press Volume up to Accept when it asks" Do you want to start the update" DON'T STOP the processus until it give you the option to reboot.
Press Power to Reboot
Delete PG58IMG from your memory card.

No. Please take the file from the multiupload link I just gave you. Take this one : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17173579&postcount=86
The root of your SD card is the very first view you see when you open the SD card e.g. path of SDcard -> E:\PG58IMG.zip (don't create a file just paste the file there)
This is the root of your SD card.
what the point of downloading this img file and running it?
what do i do after this?
Sorry I felt asleep at the computer...
This PG58IMG is for installing the Recovery.
