YOU MUST HAVE ROOT+S-OFF BEFORE THIS WILL WORK. if you are not already s-off, this will not help you.
Here is a file for you. its magic.
need to send your phone back to sprint?
want to go 100% back to stock and start the root process over again?
download the file onto the root of your sdcard.
go to bootloader mood (vol down + power)
when it asks you to press vol up to update, press volume up.
success
have winrar and dont want to erase your bootloader or your Recovery?
simply download the file and delete recovery+Hboot from the inside (do not unzip).
*make sure after you run this PG06IMG.zip to rename it to anything else (like aPG06IMG.zip) or it will ask you if your want to update every time you go to Bootloader and not allow you to fastboot or recovery.
THIS WILL MAKE YOU LOOSE ALL PERSONAL INFORMATION ON YOUR PHONE.
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
.93 hboot-Original Hboot that came with the phone-not s-off
Code:
Common issues:
Cant get device to recognize PG06IMG.img?
Check the file system of your sdcard. Sdcard that came with phone uses a FAT filesystem, which bootloader does not recognize. use a computer to format your sdcard (or use recovery to format sdcard) to exfat or fat32 to clear this issue.
Formatting will wipe your sdcard so make sure you back it up first :)

Thanks for posting!
This worked great on my friends phone! I rooted it for her but her phone is acting up and wants to take it back to sprint and this was easy after I formatted her sd to fat32

Same thing here.
Edit: Phone was not rooted, I'm trying to revert back to 2.2 after the phone was upgraded to 2.3 (before I bought it today). Maybe that's why it's not working for me. I downloaded the file from two different mirrors just in case I managed to grab one that was corrupt.

I'm working on a single-package solution for S-ON full factory reset. It's a PD98IMG type package that, in addition to the program itself, contains the complete factory stock 1.80.502.3 RUU. It runs in three phases:
Overview:
Installs itself as a PD98IMG type package (it contains a stripped down CM6 OS with a single app--the app that does the restoration, the correct radio/kernel combo for gfree exploit, and a data partition containing the RUU); Simply copy the file to the SD card (with an adapter if you can't do it through the phone), rename it to exactly "PD98IMG.zip", then boot into HBOOT (disconnect USB if connected, pull and put back battery, then hold VOL-DOWN and momentarily press POWER).
Boots and runs the restoration program as the only app in the OS, prompting the user at each step to make sure all goes well. The last step copies the RUU from the data partition to the SD card, thereby replacing the PD98IMG.zip that installed everything with the RUU, then reboots to HBOOT for the final phase.
The final phase is loading and running the RUU on the newly restored (S-ON) device to return it to full factory status. The RUU copied in phase 2 is a genuine HTC stock 1.80.502.3 restoration RUU. Allow it to unzip and self-check, then press VOL-UP to write it to the device.
Once completed successfully, you should be in the same condition as an out-of-box new phone.
If you do have to send your phone back for warranty or insurance purposes, it should be a lot easier than the currently available methods.
Important! The newest batch of Inspires shipped from HTC (probably anything bought new after Aug. 2011) have hardware that is incompatible with the hboot in the Froyo update as listed here. If your Inspire is a later model Inspire, do not run the Froyo version on it. Use the Gingerbread version only!
Instructions:
Do a nandroid and/or Titanium backup! It never hurts!
While still in ClockWorkMod recovery, do a "Factory Reset/Wipe Data". This is necessary if you've got an ext4 cache or CM7 dalvik-cache on /cache. If not it will cause boot hang after installation. EXT4 cache will not work with this tool. If your recovery has ext4, be sure you format the cache to EXT3.
Download from the URL below, copy to the SD card and rename to "PD98IMG.zip"
Reboot to HBOOT: Shutdown completely (disconnect USB if connected and pull battery if necessary) then while holding down the VOL-DOWN key, press the POWER key for about half a second. The phone should boot into HBOOT, check the PD98IMG.zip for consistency, then prompt you to install. Select VOL-UP to install.
Once installed, HBOOT will prompt you to reboot by pressing the POWER button. Do this.
The operating system in this tool is a stripped down CM6 install with only the minimum features necessary to run an apk. The apk for the tool will run after the HTC splash screen, then prompt you through the process. Depending on the speed of your SD card, the last step, copying the RUU to the SD card, may take several minutes.
Once successfully completed, the phone will automatically reboot to HBOOT and begin the process of installing the RUU. The only thing you have to do at this point is acknowledge the prompt to install by pressing VOL-UP. (Note: the RUU install may skip a couple of images during the install but this is normal.)
Once the RUU is installed, press POWER to reboot and your phone should be in 100% factory out-of-box condition.
Changelog:
13-SEP-2011 -- Added emphasis to step 2 to drive home the fact that this will not work if you have an EXT4 cache partition.
21-AUG-2011 -- 1.07: Removed "beta" designation. Added both Gingerbread (2.3.3) and Froyo (2.2.2) versions since 2.3.3 is now officially released for Inspire. Cleaned up the launcher a bit, fixed some typos and scrolling issues.
11-AUG-2011 -- 1.06b: Reverted to a PD98IMG that does NOT erase the cache. This was causing boot hangs. There is now a new step 2 in the instructions. Be sure to clear your data/cache.
10-AUG-2011 -- 1.05b: Fixed black screen for some Inspires with different mfg. LCD panels. Added cache wipe to main image as a dirty cache partition could cause bootloops in some situations. Disabled screen timeout so screen doesn't blank out while copying RUU.

I'm actually wanting to flash my phone back to an "out of the box" state, I'm downloading the .zip now, I'll post the results in a few. If this works, you will have made me a happy man!
I'm going to get the Motorola Atrix (I hope it's actually better...)
*EDIT* so I need to have S-ON BEFORE running this package?
I downloaded the above, renamed it, booted to HBOOT, ran the update however I still have S-OFF. Boots to a black screen... (Brick??)
if you have s-on, you probably never rooted in the first place so what are you looking to "restore"?

No HTC splash screen? It should boot into a minimal android system. Try pulling the battery and power on.

Great tool, downloading
works
It worked as it should. S-on and back to stock, very easily. great work.
Nice job, GenePoole. This was well thought out and executed.
is there a specific place to put the PD98IMG or is anywhere fine?
This didn't work for me. I wanted to try out the new Gingerbread release from AT&T and when I run through this process, I'm stuck at a black screen after step 4. I tried twice just to make sure I didn't screw something up. Black screen, both times.
thanks
so i haven't tried this method yet, im wondering if i return my inspire to get a new replacement inspire, will it be as easy to root my new inspire as it was a couple months ago, the reason i ask is because anyone with a rooted evo 4g better take good care of it because if they send it in to get a new one they will be stuck with stock, the new evo 4g is unrootable lol, sucks for them, any ways i just dont want a stock inspire that cant be rooted, thanks for this tool mate, i will surely use it once i know i can root my replacement inspire
This worked perfect and checked for update and told me I can download gb right away. Thanks and keep up the good work.

The RUU has the default splash screen (white with green "HTC") so I would assume that if you have a custom screen, it will overwrite it, but I have no first hand information. I'll try installing a custom splash on mine and see what happens.
SO yeah I decided to flash Miui lastnight and this happened clockworkmod wont load up for me to reflash or whipe, when I try to boot into clockwork htc logo comes up then slowly dies to black, though I can access hboot so what should i do?

it's not bricked.... power off the phone then press and hold the power key and the vol down key at the same time til you see the HBOOT screen. vol down until RECOVERY is highlited then press power. That will bring you into Recovery mode. now wipe data/factory reset... then wipe cache partition.. then go to advanced and wipe Dalvik Cache... go back to mounts and storage and format system...
after all that then go back to install zipfrom sdcard and reinstall miui that should do it
Im not going anywhere so I'll be here, let me know how you do
Ouch. That sucks. Don't worry though, there is hope.
What you will have to do is remove your SD card and download a stock RUU and it will flash in Bootloader. Unfortunately I believe it will unroot you. I am not positive on that though. I will post a link so you can be reading a little more about it, we helped a guy thru this the.other day, but he wasn't rooted. Should be the same process though. You'll want to wait until we know exactly what to do because this is your one shot before you got a fancy paperweight. I have to run to atnt for a minute. Start reading so you'll know a little more of what is going to go on, and hang tight. Someone else may step in before I'm back, but you can start familiarizing yourself with the process shortly.
This fellow was pricked during an OTA update. About the same steps will be taken...

Yeah, thats not the case here, i've done that multiple times and it remains the same.
search around on here for a stock rooted rom in PD98IMG.zip form There may be one inside the hack kit but cant remember. put it on your sdcard boot into bootloader by holding volume down and pressing power. let it search for the update. hit volume up to confirm update after it finds it. Here's a link to gb stock rooted. Look at post 4. Credit goes to gene for the file.
To flash you will need a way to transfer files to your SD card.
Download the file and rename to PD98IMG.zip. boot into hboot it will scan and ask you to apply the update.
If you can't transfer files try the ruu exe. Version you downloaded.

There has been sooo many threads based on this its not funny, did you even try to search? I don't understand why there is a distinction between soft and hard bricks. A brick is a brick, if you can boot into HBOOT the word brick should not be associated with your phone, soft or hard is reserved for ice scream.
What PD98IMG are you talking about? are you sure you grabbed the right PD98IMG rom file? If you have a SD reader delete the PD98IMG you have on there now and follow the link I provide. They will give you stock ROMs that either have been named PD98IMG that just have to be put onto the root of your inspire or you have to rename the file PD98IMG. Flash in HBOOT and reboot, install Rom Manger and then flash either CWR or 4ext or whatever tickles your fancy and boot into recovery and flash as normal. I have had the same problem you have had and these PD98IMG worked for me.

Ok. Did you have to make a goldcard or did you just put the zip on your sd and reboot it pressing down button and power down and it did the rest from there on its own?

::sigh::
Please, please, please, please, pleaseeeeeeee!!!! read and do your research. Take the time to educate yourself before you truly brick your phone. I can't even believe that you rooted your phone if you're asking me this kind of a question. I'll spoon feed this to you once, the goldcard is only used to downgrade and gain the exploit to root. I'm not 100% sure if the newest version still requires the downgrade but nonetheless after you've rooted the goldcard is useless, you don't need it. Again, please search! the issue you're having has been covered literally like 3 times this week in 3 different threads. I'll spoon feed it to you just this once, but please be aware this is a DEVELOPMENT SITE, and not I'm really lazy and can't search for my help site
Go to one of those threads I provided in the link. Download the RUU file. If it's already named PD98IMG.zip, simply place it on your SDcard (I'm guessing in your case it's still your goldcard which is your SDcard). If it is not exactly named "PD98IMG.zip" rename the downloaded RUU to "PD98IMG.zip" exactly like that and place in on your SDcard (GOLDCARD). From there press the volume up and and power at the same time to boot into HBOOT. Once in Hboot, hit the power button and follow the commands. HBOOT will scan for that PD98IMG.zip file, flash it and you will have a working stock rooted ROM to start all over. If you have another PD98IMG.zip file other then the one downloaded from the provided link, delete it. If your phone isn't being recongized by your computer, you'll need a SDcard reader to delete and add zip files to your SDcard. All of this could have been found by searching. Don't be lazy, help us help you by helping yourself to the search button
Take out sd card. Boot into hboot. Scroll down to recovery but don't press. Put sd card back in and then enter recovery. Be sure to get rid if pd98img if you are going to boot into recovery through hboot.

Your problem is very simple. The pd98img that is on your sd card will not allow you to access the hboot menu. You have to remove the pd98img if you want to enter recovery via hboot. The process I told you will skip the pd98img check and let you select an option. You have to boot into hboot though without the sd card in your phone and then pop it back in once you are able to navigate through hboot menu.
If you have a card reader you can remove it that way. If you are able to boot into your rom then you can remove it that way too.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using xda premium
@ Gizmoe ok, thanks! I've tried that and more methods still no luck. I still can't select anything with the pd98img.zip being off the sd card and I still can't select any when the sd card isn't in the phone at all. Sigh... When in hboot without sd card inserted in the phone I still can't scroll up or down at all, and the hboot and fastboot are highlighted in blue. Under fastboot it's recovery, factory reset, simlock, and image crc... I can't scroll down to none of them though. Any other method to try getting it into recovery? Thanks
Try backing up your sd card. Reformat sd card, and then put a Rom on card and then try hboot again.

Don't get butt hurt when you're openly being lazy on a development site. Don't get defensive when I tell you what you should be doing and still give you the advice you were looking for, whether or not it worked. I find it hilarious that people just like you think, "ooooh I see these threads even when I'm making this pointless one but I'm tired of reading...blah blah blah" If that's the attitude you have towards rooting and this development site in general, re-read the rules here at XDA. I'm not trying to be a jerk (regardless how you take it) but when you signed up to XDA you agreed to the terms and to adhere to rules of XDA.
The only other way to boot into recovery is through adb I think, I've never had to do it but I think there is a way to do it that way. You can always hit up Attn1's IRC chatroom, can't say they will be more receptive but they always seem to have someone in there that knows every trick.I wish I could provide more insight towards adb but I never had to or wanted to use it.

Can you boot into rom? If not how far does it get. You may be able to use adb from blanked screen. Also are you even able to navigate through hboot menu or is it just frozen?
Sent from my Inspire 4G using xda premium
No, far as I get is to the screen where it is hboot, fastboot, recovery, and etc. I can't scroll to none of them, so it's like it's frozen. I tried putting a custom rom on sd card after I formatted it, even tried different sd cards and still the same thing. So I'm stuck on the screen with the 3 little androids on the skateboard. I stayed up till 6 dis morning searching and trying different stuff, but still can't get past that screen. when I try plugging the phone up to the pc the phone screen is black and I can't do anything, but when I unplug it it'll boot into hboot. I have a card reader btw if that helps anything. Thanks!
Download this and put on root of sd card and boot into hboot. It may let you select yes after parsing a file

My phone is s-off... Do I download the froyo one or gingerbread? Sorry c where u say use gb version... When it's done downloading do I rename it or just leave it as is?
Yes the gingerbread. This will return you to stock everything. You can root again from there or just leave it as is if you don't want root anymore.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using xda premium
Get rid of all text in name except the pd98img part.

Ok thanks! I'll let you know how everything goes. Leave the file name as is right or change it to PD98IMG.zip?
I used revolution to root my phone, I think it work (havent put any type of rom in it yet); but then i decided to upgrade it to ice cream sandwich. and when i tried to install ice cream i am getting this blank black screen with white triangle sign and yellow exclamation mark + blue droid robot. Any idea what going on? If the operating system is installing properly, how long should I be seeing this screen? I read somewhere that this is a system loading sign, but how long is it going to be like this (must be at least 40 minutes already)
>> download root checker to find out if have or have not root your phone.
-So first question would be, if the phone is root. Can I upgrade it to ice cream sandwich like normal? Or I have to do something else.
>> while doing rooting, dont mess around with OTA update
-I am in a sorta of limbo right now, because i havent figure out what rom to put in. And then opt to upgrade instead. What my best option?.

Do you mean OTA ICS or a custom Rom ICS?
Hmm if it is the SECOND one you should try booting into recovery via the hboot screen. From there you can wipe data and restart. If the fault occurs again well I have no idea
If you meant an ICS update from HTC then you need to redlash the stock recovery.

It's not that bad, you only have to supercid then flash new firmware once when going to ics. Then its just wiping and flashing

I wish I can say I understand these steps, but it is getting more and more convoluted! any link to a page with steps by steps instruction? kinda feel like i am going into unchart water.
Most Ics Roms require 3.32 firmware and gb Roms require a different firmweare. Most people prefer Ics which is Android 4.0.3 . Once you have the correct firmware is quite a straight forward process. If your S off, you will place the Rom at the root of your sd card. I do this buy downloading to my computer, using my phone as a removable disk drive and copying the file to my device. It goes directly to root not into a folder. Then I enter into my recovery, i love 4ext touch recovery because it has more options and is easy to use. I do a nandroid backup of my current rom, incase something goes wrong. I. Use 4 ext for the backup also. Then I do a full wipe usually wipe data factory reset, then I wipe cash and dalvick cash then I install zip from sd card and reboot. This is how I install a Rom. After flashing it WILL take some time for the first boot so don't worry if it takes a few minutes sometimes. Then it will say Android is upgrading then it will boot into your new rom
I hope this helps you some in the steps to flashing a rom.please remember firmware is very important. Have fun flashing.

Your very welcome, remember this is just the steps to rom flashing. You FIRST must be rooted and S Off to use the procedures. Don't worry too much because once rooted and S off if you get in a pinch flashing you have your backup. But remember correct firmweare is very very important. Hope I've helped you out a bit in the rom flashing area

i believe i am already root and s-off. when you said i have a backup? what backup?!
how do i figure out what firmware i got, and which version is the correct one?.
i think i am going with the ICS route.
Here's some more information:
I downloaded a ROM Manager through marketplace, and when I tried to run it. I get the following error message: "You must root your phone for ROM Manager to function. Superuser was not found at '/system/bin/su' or '/system/xbin/su'. Use google search on your computer to find instructions to root your phone"
I also downloaded Superuser app, and when i click on it, it open up but it said 'no apps in list'!
I downloaded Titanium backup, but when I tried to run it. I get the following error message :"Sorry, I could not acquire root privileges. This application will *not* work! Please verify that your ROM is rooted and include BusyBox, and try again. This attempt was made using the 'su' command"
I download the ruu file ('RUU_Pyramid_TMOUS_1.50.531.1_Radio_10.56.9035.00U_10.14.9035.01_M_release_223976_signed) , tried to run it; and the computer ask what program should i use to open it!?
thanks.
You can download root checker to verify your root it will let you know if root was successful. Ics uses 3.32 firmware. I aquire backup by going into 4ext recovery, manage backup, new backup, backup system. What recovery are you using ? Usually you can backup from recovery. You can download correct firmware in search or usually the rom site will also have the firmware in Android development. Hope this answers some of your questions.

OK...
Pull out the battery...
Replace battery
Hold Volume Down and press power button while still holding volume down.
That will give you the fastboot menu.
Write down what is written in upper left of your screen. (Or take photo).
EDIT :
See attachment, this is what you must have before going a step ahead.

Ok now this is fine.
You don't have root, usually when the line Openxxx is missing it's because you don't have root privileges.
Now download this recovery Recovery PG58IMG.zip
Copy the PG58IMG file into the Root folder of your SD card.
Turn off your phone by removing again the battery and reboot into the Bootloader/HBOOT screen like you just did to gave me your infos.
Press Volume up to Accept when it asks" Do you want to start the update" DON'T STOP the processus until it give you the option to reboot.
Press Power to Reboot
Delete PG58IMG from your memory card.

No. Please take the file from the multiupload link I just gave you. Take this one : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17173579&postcount=86
The root of your SD card is the very first view you see when you open the SD card e.g. path of SDcard -> E:\PG58IMG.zip (don't create a file just paste the file there)
This is the root of your SD card.
what the point of downloading this img file and running it?
what do i do after this?
Sorry I felt asleep at the computer...
This PG58IMG is for installing the Recovery.
Well I've been having this problem for a while, my phone goes into a bootloop whenever I restart it. It shows the white HTC screen, goes black, then the white HTC screen...over and over again.
The only way I have found to get it to boot up normally is when I connect a USB cable to it
But if I remove the cable and reboot, I get the same problem again.
Any ideas? Has anyone had this happen before??
That may be a Hardware issue. They easiest way I can think of is to RUU back to Stock, and Reformat the SD Card. If it still does it, then it may be a Hardware related issue.

I've had that happen a couple times but it was because it was something I did/flashed, I agree with prboy, ruu back and format memory card (save your stuff to the computer first)- I've forgotten to save first a couple times

I'll definitely try that, I don't know if this shed anymore light on it but my sdcard doesn't mount through my phone anymore either...happened around the same time as the restarting thing
But I'll tr and see what happens, if not I'll just take it in to sprint, I know it can't be something I flashed, I've been on stock for a while because of my utility

I would start by Formatting the SD Card. Then if that doesn't resolve issue. Format the SD Card again, and then RUU. If at that point the issue is still present, it's time to take it in to Sprint. Out of curiosity, are you using a custom Kernel ? Reason I ask is that I've run across something slightly similar after Flashing an Experimental Kernel Dirty. Meaning I did not wipe Cache, or Dalvik before Flashing. Mind you this was a very long time ago, in my HERO days. But I seem to remember it acting sort of like the symptoms you described.

Getting the same issues. I've tried ruu through both the exe and pg06 img. Tried factory reset with no luck, in the stock recovery ive wiped everything with no luck also. It's read by fastboot and i can issue commands, flashing through fastboot just gives me a sig verification failure. I've tried every method i've found and none have worked. Happened after downgrading to 2.2. I got temproot and went to permroot to go into this. I used htcdev to unlock the bootloader and it was successful. I cant access my sdcard since flashing the 2.2 ruu reverted it to stock and i cant get into the system to disk drive it. It boots for about 3 seconds then reboots. If any of the mmcblk... commands were mistyped or something was done wrong, how would i go about checking or fixing them if thats even possible? Any help or leads would be amazing.

Must have missed that somehow. My bad . But on to the issue at hand. I'm wondering if maybe your SD Card went wonky. I would remove the SD Card, format it. Load the PG06IMG back onto the Card, reinstall. Then try to flash it. Of course backup your card to the PC first.

Tried this with same result. flashing through hboot works for the 2.2 ruu, but im still stuck in the bootloop.
I also tried flashing a custom recovery via hboot, but the pgo6img loads then doesnt ask me if i want to update or not. I have literally no idea where to go or what to check.

I was just about to say that, if the name of the file isn't correct, the bootloader won't pick it up.
Yeah i know, i was just too lazy to type it out. I know what im doing as far as general modding and flashing, and I actually managed to fix it. I'm not positive how but I used the unroot back to stock guide for the stock locked bootloader. After flashing it through hboot I tried the 2.3.4 RUU. Still bootlooped but I was at stock with locked bootloader. I then used htcdev to reunlock the bootloader and I was then able to flash partitions through fastboot. I flashed cwm and was able to adb through it. I basically just reran through the rooting phase and gained temproot. From here I redid the steps to engineer hboot and finally received s-off. After this it booted normally. I might be leaving steps out but if anyone needs specifics, just pm me and maybe I can figure it out again for you.
