As much as I love my new Desire, one thing I am not so keen on is how fast it is possible to rip through a fully charged battery.
I have already found that a fully charged Desire that is unplugged when I leave for work at 7am will need a charge by around 3pm!
This may be due to my usage, but what's the point of having a smartphone unless you use it to the max
Previously I had a Raphael which had a similar problem, which I solved by getting an extended battery from eBay.
Extended batteries for the Desire seemed pretty scarce on eBay - most of the ones on there being for the Nexus one which has a slightly different backplate. I did find one for £13.99 that was shipped from Hong Kong, so I thought it was worth a try.
Around 2 weeks later this arrived in the post:

}
First impressions were good, the backplate felt pretty solid and has a nice rubberised finish to it.
It was promptly fitted to my Desire:
Again I was impressed with the quality, the backplate fitted perfectly - no gaps or bulges:
It also passed the most important test; not bursting into flames when i plugged the charger in!
As you can see it doubles the thickness of the Desire, but its not too obtrusive in my opinion. As a bonus you can actually stand the phone on its side for video watching
Today was the first full day of usage, and so far it has been running for 14 hours and the battery level (Using Battery Indicator Pro) is at 14%.
That includes 97 texts sent, around 20 minutes of calls, 10 minutes using RAC Traffic app (GPS), 10 minutes using Google Maps, 30 minutes with the WiFi on using VNC to connect to a machine at work, say 10 minutes of browsing, and randomly checking emails & Twitter throughout the day. (sync was turned off)
This is pretty much exactly what I wanted - being able to go a whole day without a charge, and still use the phone as I pleased. The trade-off is a slightly bigger and heavier phone but I can live with that
If anyone wants I an extended battery I heartily recommend one like this.
Is it ok to link to eBay sellers? As I don't mind providing the link.
Now i'm off to (finally) charge my phone...
Thanks for the review, ebay seller links are fine or just give the item number/seller? How about in the pocket, it must feel heavy and bulging out?
I was thinking about getting one of these, thanks. As above, same question really does it make it feel considerably heavier?
What about this one?

Although the back cover looks better people on another forum have said that this battery is not that good and seems to not give any extra juice compared to the original. Check my posts about it here, I would not get that battery:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=673449&page=9
Eurgh, that back cover looks terrible.
This is the one I bought:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2500MAH-EXTEN...UK_Mobiles_Accessories_RL&hash=item4150ccfef7
According to my kitchen scales the Desire weighs 165g with the extended battery fitted.
It doesn't feel considerably heavier, and still fits fine in the back pocket of my jeans.
Currently it's been running for 17 hours and has 32% left
I have one too since yesterday exactly the same battery. I must say I havent seen so much different so far. Maybe slighter better but I thought it would be much better than that.

£14 you mean?
I've really had no problems with the battery. It's much better than my old G1, and I use my phone constantly to check e-mail, twitter and play games during smoke breaks. The battery lasts from 9am til about 10pm. I'm using OpenDesire but haven't tested other ROMs.
this is medium to low usage and i get 2days with default battery.
would put such cover crap on my desire
I dunno what's the big deal with those big batteries? The phones original battery workes all fine. Just turn off all widgets, like "Mobile"-internet widget who drains most power of them all, and you'll survive for next 6 upcomming days - with one charge! And before U think that big battery is "good", maybe u shall take a look here: http://batteryboss.org/
I can easily do that with my normal battery. This looks like crap. Did you even train your battery when you just got your Desire?
Bought an extended one with 2500 mah at ebay.
Use it for about two days.
My results is about 30 hours of usage with icq always on, some calls, refresh mail and weather.
Not so bat, but i've expected more...
The cover looks horrid - I'll stick to charging my phone each night thank you!!
Adding maybe 1 hour of battery life with a battery that is more than likely crap quality and will degrade after 1 week AND adding a back cover that makes the phone look like crap?
No thanks.
Hi there, do you still have the link to the extended battery you bought?

I'd love to have this battery, but then again I'd hate to damage my beloved Desire without my silicone case, so to be or not to be, eh?!
by the way, to save battery, hold power button till some noptions come up, at the bottom there is an internet option, just click that to turn internet connection off whenever you are not useing the phone! gives me 2 days with heavy use (gaming, music etc)

All righty so after much pondering and wondering 'should I' and 'what if'... I finally said screw it and bought the 3,600mAh Mugen Power Battery for my G2
Pricey at $100 and nearly 3 weeks to get due to back order, it was tough... but once I got it, installed it, charged it, deep cycled a couple times... battery life is flat out awesome.
Typical daily usage for me includes 2-3 sessions of 20 minutes of streaming music (Pandora or Subsonic), 20 minutes calling, ~50 to 100 SMS, ~20 emails, and occasionally I'll get on the browser and check stuff out online.
I leave GPS and 3G on all the time, Sync is always on, I turn WiFi on when I'm at home, sometimes I use bluetooth (very rare) for keyboard.. I use Automatic brightness
On my G2 using CM7, and overclock to 1.1Ghz w/ONDEMAND governor stock 1300mAh battery achieved 14-20 hours of run time, typically the phone was dead after around 15 hours. Sometimes I would get more if I didn't use it much, other times if I GPS on battery, I get 10-12 hours
Now with 3600mAh.. the WORST I've gotten (this was trying to kill the phone asap) I got 20 hours. Mind you I had NAV on when it wasn't needed, I left brightness at max, left WiFi and bluetooth on, etc etc...
I've been using the phone today normally, my battery is at 82% and I've been 9 hours and 19 minutes since unplugged. This battery is ridiculously awesome!! I haven't even been able to drain it under normal usage, yet lol
The size it added is not all that big of a deal.. I can post some pictures but the fat cover adds maybe 1/8 inch to the phone's thickness. Its ugly IMO... but its functionality has captured my heart lol I really do love the run time with this battery, it was so worth ditching my case and paying $100 for it. I really do like it!
I'll post pics when I get another camera to snap some of the phone (my phone has become my primary camera LOL)

3,600mah Battery is 12% in this picture.. Could have done MUCH better though:
You can see a sharp drop.. I played games on the phone for 2-3 hours. I imagine if I did not play any games on it, I could have gone much longer.. I would guess perhaps another 12-24 hours on this charge!
Huh?
Sorry, your avatar distracted me
Nice review though, I stuck with the mugen 1800 and it serves my purpose. Get's me easily through the day with the little extra kick if needed

The battery is pretty good. I can get a full days use easy out of it. This includes heavy browsing, games, 100-200 texts a day, email, Twitter and Facebook. Here is the link, http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120680372473&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
I also have a picture of it on the phone itself.
I bit and got the 1800 mAh battery, didn't want the extra bulkness, but needed something to get over this crappy stock battery, I usually do a lot of texting/talking on my mytouch 4g and it would usually get me thru the day if not more then 24 hours including stand by. With this battery, I couldn't get thru a whole day w/o charging, so hoping the 1800 mah battery can help.

most are this batteries are mislabeled either way haha... I prefer paying for the mislabeled 3600 since I'll get it in like 3 days rather than like 20 XD
These 3500 mAH batteries aren't bad at all. I've been using it for 2 weeks now, and I can last 2 days no problem. Only challenge is trying to completely kill the battery.
Might save a few bucks, but you have to be careful with these no-name batteries.
They sometimes only test at 60-70% of the capacity they're listed at.
http://batteryboss.org/
Now Id still say this is a better deal than the Seidio or Mugen, considering the 3200 Mugen tested at 75% of the capacity promised, and Seidio 3500mah at 81% of promised capacity.
The no name (different no-name but still) 3600mah tested in at 2466mah, 70%, but costs a lot less that the Seidio and Mugen (15% the price).
I bought a 3500mah. Hopefully the battery life makes up for the bulkness of the phone.
One question. Does it feel weird with the big battery in your pocket?

If your on the stock battery then that is normal dude.
Get either a Mugen or an Anker.

Pyroice mt4gs
i have the stock battery that came with it and have great battery life on 1.0.3. Where did you get your battery? Could you have gotten hornswaggled? Also have you tryed recalibrating your battery using the advanced option in clockwork or the Recalibration app https://market.android.com/details?id=com.nema.batterycalibration
I have used the battery calibration app. Should I try doing it in recovery?
Pyroice mt4gs
I'm pretty sure they do the same thing, recovery verses recal app. If you haven't already, i would drain it completely and then let it charge with the phone off overnight to ensure it's full. and then run recalibration. In the meantime Ill pay attention to what i get on a daily average and we can compare. You shouldn't be > 70% after 3 hours doing nothing.
I'm on pyro ice with the stock battery and have the same problem. I just stay near a charger!
How long does a full charge last?
A lot depends on signal quality as well.
If I dnt use the screen too much I can get around 18-23 hrs on good signal, but worse with bad.

and yes, im on anker, ordered the two + charger package... but just be aware those who have it, the UK dealer is resending me a new charger, as they tell that anker warned them its dangerous to charge through the USB part of anker charger, at least with those that were traded out in december for me...

I do just about the same. Flashed with the ExtremeUV kernel, though. Given our horrible network and no 4G, i usually just stick to 2G because 3G causes my phone to heat up. When am at home I switch to wi-fi. All my setcpu profiles are on powersave mode except on call.
i went through the battery recalibration process too, set my brightness setting to manual 20% during the day and 0% in teh evening.
I can't possibly think of anything else to increase those hours.
I will be ordering one of those ankers. I guess the stock battery will make a good secondary battery.

Every time you let this type of battery completely die, part of it will never work again and dies forever.
Much better to stop at 2-5% then go to full empty, you hurt your battery for no good reason.
To properly break in a new battery, you need to bring it to full, then to that 2-5% mark 4 or 5 times in a row, it exercises the cells and gets them ready to work.
This may be helpful:
Everything you wanted to know about Li-Ion batteries but were afraid to ask!
Edit:
And this:
Battery:
- Spare batteries for the MT4GS? Anker for the win!!
- Mugen Power batteries (1800mAh and 3600mAh) for MyTouch 4G Slide?
- Anker or Mugen???
- Generic 1800mah batteries from Ebay?
- Can we use Sensation Seidio batteries?
- external battery pack! Awesome!

16% screen time? Well I can last longer on stock battery
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
I bought an extended battery 4500mah on ebay for $8 a couple weeks ago from ebay. It makes the phone twice as thick, but the battery lasts all day with moderate use. I haven't put my phone on the charger mid-day since I bought it. Being that its a cheap generic battery, there is no brand name and I can't verify the capacity is accurate, but it is getting the job done. I'm at work and can't really give any more specifics, but heres a quick comparison
Pros: 1 overnight charge lasts all day, phone not much heavier, GSAM app seems to accurately adapt, Thicker case seems to protect rear camera and light better without obstructing them. Makes you more attractive to opposite gender (this may be a false claim)
Cons: Phone thicker, loss of NFC chip, longer charge time, must charge from lower capacity to avoid confusing battery estimation mechanisms (under 40ish%) Harder to find protective cases, and old ones will not fit.
the gs3 is the first phone i haven't thought of buying a bigger battery for. i get great life with the stock one, much better than my razr maxx had.
I was about to buy one of these extend bateries, but making the phone twice as thick is a turn off....
Thanks for all the responses so far. What I did was buy another oem nfc enabled battery, and a phone mount charger with battery charger. I am actually getting all day charge with heavy use and switching in a fresh one before sleep. The only reason I was curious about extended was because I enjoy hiking and photography. But unless you get 2 days use it doesn't appear to be much better than buying multiple stock batteries.

i ended up getting the extended battery from hyperion on amazon.
i live in miami, and lost power for like 2 days over a month back and instantly i realized i needed this fat battery.
it actually feels better when i grip it. and i love that i forget at times to charge and its all good.
i got it for my wife since she is always killing her phone. it goes all day sometimes 1 day and half.
it's funny though because the size may turn you off but size wize it matches other friends of mine who also have the s3 and they over do it with the thick cases and stock battery.
Does anyone know how to reset the phone to give an accurate read out of the bigger battery?
Is there such a need to do so?
With these batteries the specs for a OEM battery is like days in standby. Would not one think that an extended battery would last weeks, and not drain in a day of hanging out in your pocket with little WiFi, calls, and text messages?
I know the ones they sell on e bay and Amazon are old new batteries as they have been sitting in storage and shelf live has caught up to them.
This is the only explanation for such a short time before having to recharge them.
I have never had a brand new hot off the press battery, as I get my phones at the pawn shop discounted. Hence they are already discontinued by the service providers.
I wouldn't even trust buying a new OEM battery from them as there is no telling how long they have had there batteries in stock just sitting there getting old depreciating.

I agree - stock battery is good but I bought an extended anyway for longer gaming sessions.
I use the stock battery when at work so I can use my otterbox, but in my leisure time the hyperion battery rocks. No complaints on the stock battery, liking the hyperion as well.
My complaint is losing data service under 50% battery - hyperion staves that off longer.
But does hyperion really offer more than a day these responses seem to confirm my worries of it not being double as advertised but maybe in the 1.25 to 1.75 range? And if all the stock batteries have been sitting on the shelf how would the hyperion battery be any different? I am really considering investing in a hyperion still because 3 batteries would be ownage and I generally go on hikes for 2 to 3 days and my 2 stocks might not make it. Climbing a peak and taking a panoramic is truly special. But at this point investing in a new case with a hyperion might be more hassle than buying some more oems on the cheap.
Anyways thanks for the responses everyone. And PROTIP storing your battery at 50% in a dry cool place is what is recommended for long term storage. Also I learned recently that letting your battery go through a full discharge and then recharging actually leads to a longer battery life span, by a huge factor!
PS sorry admins and others I just joined this forum and realize this whole thread should have been placed in the accessories section I hope my gaff does not make you think less of me.

Hyperion extended battery after a few cycles
How is everyone getting 24+ hrs with the Hyperion?? I seem to be only achieving 12+ hrs with almost 6 hrs of screen on time (wifi on, brightness 30%, sync on)!
Hello,
Does anyone have any experience with Hyperion extended batteries for the Galaxy S4?
http://www.amazon.com/Hyperion-Sams...F8&qid=1386316276&sr=8-1&keywords=s4+hyperion
I'm going to be ordering one soon but thought I should ask about the performance and experience by people who may have used it. It says that the battery now has NFC, can anyone using it confirm if it is true?
The battery has positive reviews on Amazon. Can anyone also tell how fat does the S4 get when used with the battery? Also what timings are you guys getting with the battery? Is an external case needed to avoid any ugliness or anything?
All this and if you have anything to else to add would be of great help.
I had a Hyperion with my s3 and it was a good battery. They have great customer service. It seemed like it started draining a little more than normal at 6 months or so but it could have been my imagination or poor cell signal. I emailed them for help/info and they rushed another battery out free of charged. Was willing to send the old one back but they told me to keep it.
I'd definitely buy from them again. I did get mine on Amazon like most things I buy. Went with a 3000 mah zero lemon for my s4 due to size. Lots of nice cases for stock size phones. Would love an extended waterproof case.
Curious about this as well. I had one for my Galaxy Nexus and it was great. Made the phone usable for most of the day finally. This phone has been pretty decent on battery, but when I know I am going to be using it a lot more it would be nice to have the extra battery.

Hi,

I have one of the 5200's for my S4. I get at least

Likewise, I have used Hyperion extended batteries in my S3 and now the 5200 in my S4. No complaints except I would like to find a water resistant extended protective case.
I have the 7500mah battery for my phone. And I can say I'm very pleased with it. The case it comes with is actually easier to hold. I'd definitely recommend it. I actually got around 11 hours of screen time when I first got it!

So it's been three days since I received my Hyperion 5200mah battery. Although the correct battery timings and percentage maybe shown after 4-5 cycles of charge-discharge-recharge, I'll post the screenshots of mine and will post again after the 4-5 cycles...

The charge cycle said is to be 10-12 hours however the battery is charging to a full faster than the said time. Could it be because of the difference in voltage? If I'm not wrong, US uses 110v mainly and here in KSA we have 220-240v. Could it be because of this?
Got a quick question!
I was instructed to let the phone charge for 10-12hrs even if the phone shows 100% full charge notification. How did you guys charge it?
You are not forced to charge it that long on first charging process. I did it not and do not have any problems.
More important is that if you charge your phone from now on, you have to charge 1-2 hours longer (depending on battery size 5200 vs 7500 mAh) after you have reached 100%.

I see. Thank you.
Normal charge takes around 5-6hours now which means I should charge for 7-8 hours in total.

if you have the 5200 hyperion just charge 6 hours. that is enough.

What do you mean?
Hyperion has pretty good quality, and their warranty support is good. Anker is another good brand for the extended batteries. (They don't do cases though)
Hyperion has a really nice TPU case that fits over the extended battery..
Screen time
Any news about screen time from you guys? That 9hrs screen time seems a bit ungodly
So i got a Note 4 recently and immediately went for the Mugen Power 6640 mah extended battery. I just missed the FedEx truck today, hopefully i can swing by there tomorrow or else i will have to wait til monday. The battery life on the Note 4 is pretty good, coming from my HTC One M7, and the quick charge is VERY nice, but i really think i need this extended battery.
I will be posting some results from my experience with pictures of course in the coming days, as soon as i get my hands on the thing that is.
Here's what i am getting.

Well i was so excited to get started on this i drove all the way to the FedEx sorting center to pick it up today instead of waiting until Monday for them to re-deliver it. Will have a few teaser photos up by tomorrow morning.

Yes that's the same battery. I see there's quite a few pages on that thread, did anyone actually post test results, i went through the last few pages and didn't see much. I did notice someone said the case i bought should fit, (fingers crossed)
Here is a previous review i did, i will post something similar, focusing on the test results for battery life mainly.

Yes battery is good and tested good. Only 1 case will fit but you loose kickstand.

How have you found the battery life? Reason I'm asking is because I've tried the Anker 6440 extended battery and unless I didn't "condition" it properly I didn't see much of a better battery life than stock battery. Why I'm returning it.
For me gonna try the cheap battery cases like the knock off Mophie types from eBay and Amazon.
Last night I tried to kill it from a full charge. I got over almost 7.5 hours of screen on time mostly just running cpu+gpu stability test within full brightness, GPS, wifi, Bluetooth enabled with sync going every 15 minutes.
That's pretty good. For me I don't find much difference so I'm returning mine but glad you're getting better results than me. I also have the zerolemon 10,000 mAh beast but way too bulky for normal use.
Hopefully my cheap power bank battery cases come soon and I can try it out. For $17 shipped I figure not much to lose
Also you probably get what you pay for there. The Mugen is a $90 product, the Anker is a $30 product. You can't possibly think they are the same quality even though they are both rated the same capacity.

Kinda like i was saying before, with lithium ion stuff and also varying types of battery packs chemistry, usually you get what you pay for. I've used Mugen products on my Tmobile G2, HTC Evo 3d, and my One m7, all performed the same for the 2 years i had the phone, the cheap ones don't last the length of the contract.

That's true I guess but I've tried both Anker and Hyperion extended batteries and they're supposed to be reputable companies. And both don't seem to last as long as their advertised battery sizes. For me I'm not willing to pay $90 to get a few extra on screen hours (I'm averaging about 6 hrs OST with stock battery)

I'm sure I could get a lot of screen on time with normal use like power saver with auto brightness. Remember those numbers I got with screen on are maximum power consumption, max screen brightness, wifi, GPS, Bluetooth with a benchmark running both cpu and gpu at the same time. I guess it would be useful to see how long the stock battery does under the same conditions to get the big picture. 7.5 hours under those conditions has to translate to much more with power saver reducing cpu usage and auto brightness. I don't need full cpu speed unless I'm playing games.
thanx for sharing
I am still in the process of conditioning the battery. It stays at like 1% for 3 hours of full brightness screen time on the stabilty test cpu/gpu app. It's very good battery life so far. Will report back when i get everything together. Heres a couple teasers.
