For All Those Switching from an iPhone . . . - Captivate General

So I figured there are a few of us switching to Android from an iPhone, and for most of us it couldn't come soon enough! Figured it'd be nice to have a thread to post questions/answers we have on the migration.
Here are a few of mine:
1. No visual voice mail on AT&T--If you have google voice, enable Google voice mail on the phone in Google Voice>> Settings. I still need to tweak a couple of things, but looks like it will work pretty well. Dialing in to get your voice mail just seems so 2003.
2. Contacts--Google Contacts is what I synced with, however when you sync your contacts with google, you end up with anybody you have ever emailed as the phone doesn't have the option to just pull in 'My Contacts' as of yet. Simple fix is to click options in the Contacts app, Display Options, and click to display only contacts with phones. Not the but works for now until hopefully Samsung addresses this with a fix.
3. Silent toggle--Here is where I'd like some help. There is no hardware toggle for silent mode, and it's pretty annoying to turn on the phone and have to select the 'Silent" profile. Anyone know of an app that will let you use the volume rocker when the phone is locked and the screen is off? Ideally I want to be able to reach in my pocket, hold the volume down key and have the phone vibrate to let me know it's on vibrate mode.
Update!! Widget locker takes care of this perfectly. you can wake the screen with the volume key, and then adjust the ringer volume from the lockscreen.

the silent toggle is what i am wanting too.. i havent got the phone yet, but it will be one thing that is missed from my iphone.. hopefully something like you described will be made..
i dont know if the captivate has it or if it is just a droid thing, but i like the lockscreen for the droid where you can switch it to silent that way too..

Swipe down from the top status bar (the one with the battery indicator). You will then have easy access to toggle Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Silent and Vibration.

There are widgets that you can place on your home screen to deal w/ turning the phone to silent mode.

No Visual Voicemail sucks. Come on, even Blackberrys have visual voicemail. What the hell? Oh well, I probably just will never check my messages again. Most people text if I don't answer anyway. I'll have to see if Google Voice handles it the way I like. I've been wanting to use Google Voice more anyway.

yeah no visual voice mail does suck but there are alternatives but i dont care cause ive never used visual voice mail

Visual voicemail its up to the carrier not android. All HTC sense UI have it. Anyways try Google voice its even better because it convert voicemail to visual text voicemail.

Is visual voicemail something we could get with custom roms?

Seconded. If Sense UI has it, would hacked roms or the like, enable visual voice mail?
yes or no?

No--I believe visual voicemail is on the carriers end of things. For the iPhone AT&T has it set up but not yet for android phones. Hopefully that changes at some point.

Google Voice
Use Google Voice. It can transcribe your voice mails to text.

Free alternative
Just use YouMail its free from the market place. Been using for quite a while now. Works great even on the iPhone.

I Don't know why people are complaining about no visual voicemail, its almost like they are ignoring your post!
Google = Android = Google voice, and its much better than the iphone voicemail. Google voice LOOKS just like the iphone version when you open it up, but it will transcribe what they said into text if you don't feel like listening to the voicemail. It also sends you an e-mail notification that you have a voicemail, and you can also read/hear it through that email on your computer.

For the love of god, why is this a visual voicemail thread... on an Android device...
Sign up for Google Voice. Set it to take over your carrier voicemail. Enjoy superior voicemail experience.

On the demo unit I just played with at the store, I could hold down the volume key and mute the ringer if the screen was unlocked. I'm not sure if that put it in "silent mode" or not. Also, you have to have a pretty big pocket to fit both hand and device and still have room to swipe the screen...

getting tired of at&t
I came to AT&T in 2007 because verizons customer service and
billing was so bad. Now AT&T making me feel like I may have to switch again. They keep cripling phones and trying to manipulate the buyer towards the iphone. They're as bad as Steve Jobs in their limitation of chooses for their own agendas. Android is here, and they need to quit dragging their feet and cripling phones that compete with the iphone.

I like google voice, but the transcribing sux. I got a message today that said "A death please call me back" when the person was just saying my name and to call them back. And yesterday my wife called and she said this is Val, but it transcribed This is Dan lol.

Get "No Lock" to get rid of the lock screen. When you press the power or volume buttons it just unlocks the phone. Still requires swipe to pickup call.
The neat thing about that is that you can depress the volume down button until its silent even when its in your pocket

Bad transcribing is better than no transcribing There are cases where it is very useful (like being able to search)

I downloaded No Lock but didn't have a chance to use it as Widget Locker ($.99) does exactly what I want it to. I downloaded Widget Locker for the widgets on the lockscreen and it also has the option to allow the use of the volume keys at the lockscreen. Just started using it but so far I'm a big fan.

Get the phone out of the case + Answering a call = Impossible?

Does this happen to any one or is it just me?
I have an ordinary case for my Touch Pro. Almost 10 out of 10 times when the phone rings and I reach out to my phone, try to take it out - boom - the call becomes a missed call. I guess what is happening here is that once the phone rings, the screen is active and either your finger accidentally touches the volume key or any other key or even the screen, it makes it a missed call. It is very annoying and how to avoid this????
Thanks

there is a key disabler cab look for it
There are many options how to disable the touchscreen.
There was a topic not long ago about this.
Answerkey Disabler
PocketShield (I currently use this one)
TouchProLock
Sensorlock
Throttlelock
S2U2 (not recommended for TP, drains the battery for unknown reason)
All these deal with locking the TP.
Sorry for not posting links but I don't have much time. All of them are available on XDA though.
You do have the option of extending the time it takes for a call to go to voice mail, it can be extended up to 30 seconds. The option is under settings > phone > Services > Call Forwarding
There is also a lot of lag on between the time the caller's phone is ringing and you get a ring on the Fuze
I guess this is not because of the keys. Just keep the phone in front of you and try to call your phone and see your self, first you will see the incoming call indicator light, and after some time you will start hearing the ring tone. Now by the time you take the phone from the case - it's a miss call. I tried to search all over XDA but didn't find a way to start ringing immediately when call comes, I read some where that this is due to the dialer skin and by using default WM dialer this can be fixed. I didn't try this.

I think he was talking about the touchscreen being active on incoming calls.
If however the problem is in the delay, then the dialer skin is the key.
You have to change it to the WM default (it does work, the lag is almost gone) and have the ringtone in WAV format (not tested, I didn't bother to put any wavs).
if you get rid of the dialer and switch to WM
you will lose functionality including the symbol to show bluetooth being on or off
I downloaded and installed disableanswerkeys and it works fine. It took a while for me to understand the cryptic question it asks in the beginning - i get stumped if there are two negatives in a sentence So It is on and i tried and it works ok. I also downloaded sensorlock and throttlelock. Yet to try these ... will post my comments.
the lag in answering the call - i believe there is a separate thread about that, right?
Thanks for the help

Vibartion During Call

This is very annoying to me and a few other people that have the captivate but during a call and you get a txt the phone vibrates. Is there anyway/trick to turn this off and have it beep during a call?
If you get Locale and a plug-in for determining if the phone is on a call or not, you can have it automatically disable vibration when on a call and then re-enable it when the call is ended.
Why would you want to turn it off? I am pretty sure you do not get more than 1 or 2 text while on the phone. I think its a very useful feature. Well back to your question as far as I know there is no way to do this unless you want to dig around your database folder and see what you can find??
Go to settings-call settings-all calls-alerts on call Off
you can turn it off, but every phone does this...i mean how else are you supposed to know if you got a text if you're on a call?

My point exactly. I would just put my phone down and never notice the missed message/call/whatever since we do not have LED notifications.
My Blackberry would give me a little audio indicator in my ear if I received a text while speaking on the phone, even if my phone was set to vibrate. It was a nice feature. I wish this phone would do the same because it vibrates so loudly I can't hear what person I'm speaking to is saying.
if you're using the headset, it gives an audible sound.
I dunno I guess I don't mind as much, if I notice anything then I will defiinitely pass it along
Open the Messaging App.
Hit the Menu Button.
Go to Settings.
Scroll Down.
Uncheck Vibrate.
Hey guys.. your getting a misunderstanding... I want it to vibrate when im not talking on the phone but when im talking on the phone like was said above... it vibrates so loud when your talking. I was asking if there was a way to turn the vibrate off during the call and get a beep sound instead like the dudes blackberry does.

[Q] App to one touch silence notification while phone is locked in pocket?

Maybe somebody here has the programming skillz needed to make this app, but I want to be able to one touch any hardware button to silence a notification AFTER it rings. All the answers i get are to trim my ringtones down more, or get these apps that set up profiles. I like my ringtones where they are, and the profile thing is not what what i need as i have different times for things each day so....
the problem scenario:
I am sitting in a meeting-class-dinner-movie... Etc Etc, anything like that and BAM, I get a text message. It so turns out I forgot to silence my phone before, so here I am with "Dancing Queen" from ABBA playing in my pants.
Current method to deal with said problem:
Either stand up, or lean way back, Pull phone out of pants, Press a hardware button to unlock, Slide to unlock, Enter design code thingy or pin code, and finally, Pull down notification bar to silence "Dancing Queen"
Idea App solution: Hear notification (SMS, MMS, Email, etc) ringtone play, Frantically reach down and press ANY hardware button and instantly silence the ringtone.
Can anybody do this?

DOn't know what phone you're using, pretty much every Android phone I've seen has something like this.
Don't know which phone u are using but my Desire is muted when I press VolDown during an incoming call....
DROID X: and yes, during phone calls, that works. But I said notifications. Emails SMS, MMS, etc.....
DROID X: Rooted, DeoDexed, BigDXSerenity Red

[Q] Way to turn up the volume on visual voicemail?

Is there a way to turn up the visual voicemail volume? It is too low on speaker phone. It really isn't usable. I have tried turning everything up, but no luck. Any suggestions?
I know this isn't the exact answer ur looking for, but Google voice is a great alternative; does the whole visual thing as well as transcribing to text with the option to txt or email u the transcript in addition to access via the app. Just my 2 cents, take it for what its worth.

not getting text notifications

I've got only 1 issue with my OP7 pro.
I get text on Verizon no issue I did the needed CDMA-less nonsense. But I'm not getting notification sounds when I get a text.
Emails are fine and messenger works but with stock message app or the messages+ app that I prefer I get no sound.
Yes the switch is on ring mode all the way down.
Yes I've gone in to settings and set a custom text sound and still no luck. Media and ring volume all the way up. Anyone else have this issue?

call Verizon again they didn't do it right the first time they did the same thing to me
Oh I misread I wasn't getting text messages when they did it wrong with me I don't know about the sound issue
Figured it out my stupid do not disturbed was on.
Found it on 2018 forum post for the OP6 lol I've NEVER used it. With the toggle on side of phone idk why there's even that option. I guess for automation it's a decent option to have. I was getting very frustrated. Funny and dumb issue.
