Does anyone know of an app or a setting to control the touch button lights at the bottom of the screen?
i tried searching for a solution but found none.
I like reading off of the kindle app at night and with 22% brightness and white text on a black background, the result is a perfect experience -- except for the four blinding leds every time I turn the page...
This might also be helpful for those with issues during streaming video (i.e. Netflix).
I apologize in advance if this has been dealt with/is in the wrong place.

That is a very good question and I have the same problem while reading on my phone. I'm going to try and do some research to see if I can come up with a solution.
Try this. I don't know if it works or not yet

Bump for a good question
the light buttons are bright as fkc at night. +1 good question.. probably saves battery too if someone can dev this app.

Install BLN control and check Activate Notifications. The lights will only stay on for a few seconds after you touch the screen/buttons.
Thanks for trying guys. I want to completely disable those bad boys. I know where they are. Don't need a searchlight!
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
Well you can't disable them. Not even the stock roms let you do that, the best bet is for them to only blink, which is they turn on when you're using them.
Some black tape works lol

Would the touchscreen still work with black/electrical tape? That makes me wonder, but I am lazy and have none on hand to test out.

I'm not sure if anyone else knows about this, but if you hold your finger on the status bar until the notification tray starts to open and then stops opening, you can slide your finger back and forth on the status bar to adjust brightness without going into your settings. I just found this out and thought it was cool and worth sharing

I kept noticing it changing brightness randomly sometimes since I got it back in August, and I just figured it out, haha. Oh well, eitherway, I'm sure there are people out there who will be pleased to learn this trick

While the idea is nice, I find it a bit tedious. I'll go with a switch widget instead.

If you really want to disable them permanently, it's a one-line change in the kernel. You basically don't tell it where the light switch is .
Which ROM are you using?

Code:
gpio_direction_output(_3_GPIO_TOUCH_EN, onoff);
Well damn, looks like that might not only have turned off the backlight, but also the ability to use the button. Black electrician's tape is probably an easier solution if that was your goal.
Somehow I think you still want to be able to use the buttons though.
Isn't there another line of code that tells how bright the keys can be? Is it possible to set that at 0?

I'm not trying to hinder development, but in my opinion I would rather them spend their time on stuff that is less cosmetic... that stuff can come later because there are more important issues they are working on. I'm sure it will one day get fixed...

Sometimes a little distraction is nice. Trust me, after you've been staring at VCO divider tables for a while, something simple like "Can you just turn off this light?" is a good way to improve productivity. I'm back in the tables again this morning, but this gives me something interesting and rewarding to do during the roughly hour and a half a full build takes.

Pfft!
no one here is asking the main devs for this fix anymore....its already been said several times they dont know....sooo maybe other people in here can try to figure out a fix.
So have a nice day.
Also its not just so "cosmetic" as you think.....the people that are on ics based roms would truely appreciate this fix due to the amount of battery life gained if those damn lights didnt stay on.
I would like to know which line this is as well. I dont need extra keys in beam. I want just the hard keys

I do agree that it would be nice. Think about it the only time the lights are on is if the screen is on, if the screen is on, chances are you are touching the screen unless you are watching a movie... there are a few roms out that don't have this problem like the beam port... Maybe compare roms and kernels? There is bound to be a solution. I hope you find your answer and sorry i wasn't trying to blast anyone.
Its all good....i watch alt of movies while sitting at the back gates waiting for the parks to empty out at Disney so i can go to work and the those lights are quite annoying in the dark watching movies lol
GOOD NEWS EVERYONE! Theres an app called screen filter on the market that does the trick by turning off the softkeys umtil you actually click them details are on my capacitive buttons thread.
Its kinda old news...but it does work but its just more steps for getting what you want......when it could all be avoided
This phone is not my daily driver, and I'll do as much as I can, but I also have a day job
I would appreciate all discussion stay to this thread, and I'd love it if there were some community self-help.
State of the Union (for the Blaze 4G) (2012-11-05)
Current state of the ROM. This likely applies to any of the ROMs using the kernel sources coming from CyanogenMod for this device.
The device mostly works as it should. There are some problems currently people are having with this phone, and I will detail those here:
1) First and foremost, the Screen of Death. This is a problem that isn't only occuring to us. Just a couple of days ago I asked what the status was and the answer is that they have no idea. Some think it's specific to our platform (msm8660, which we share with a number of other phones), except that I've experienced it on other platforms, like my S3. Some think it's related to the display, except that not all the devices on this platform use the same display. Because of the randomness and lack of verbosity in the bug, they don't have a way of getting any useful data on it. dmesg and logcats are pointless. They are working hard trying to find it, but keep in mind that it isn't just us.
2) Saving pictures somewhere other than local storage. Yes, you should be able to save to your SD card. I think this is coming sooner rather than later. The following patch popped up over the weekend and adds in the functionality: http://review.cyanogenmod.com/25848. The Q&A responses to it look good. I suspect it'll go through a revision or two once they work out the bugs and then it'll get incorporated.
3) Saving app data somewhere other than the local storage. While I'm looking into it and talking to officials, I'm fairly confident that this behavior won't change in the official CM builds. Some of the other CM derived roms may allow this, and you should probably look there to solve this problem. The sad thing fact that our devices shipped with 1.2 GB of internal storage. I don't know why Samsung hates us so much, but they do. And therefore, the default behavior for CM is bad for those of us that want to game. Some users have reported success using an app called Directory Bind. I haven't used it and can't vouch for it, however it looks like it'd let you point specific directories from your internal storage to a space on your external storage. This is definitely safer than the mount swapping ideas that have been going around.
4) BLN isn't 100% unbuggy. Yes, BLN is buggy. BLN is the Button Lights Notifications. As of 11/10 we are on the official CM cypress-touchkey driver. However it seems there's still a bug there. Occasionally if you unlock during a notification, the lights won't come on. Sorry, that's just the way it is.
5) Camera Flash won't disable. This is unfortunate. Apparently if you tell the camera to disable flash, it simply won't do it. It's towards the bottom of my list, but it is definitely there.
The most important thing to keep in mind is that CyanogenMod version 10 is a moving target. Lots of stuff is happening, and until it's labeled as "stable" (and probably even for some time after that), we will continue to experience bugs.
Thank you

Make sure to check the MD5 sum of your download(s). Make sure you wipe dalvik, and do a factory/data reset from CWM. It might also help to format /system.
I used this ZIP in my last install and it has worked fin for me so far... I've actually found it to be fairly stable...

How has the data seemed? The "regular" stuff seemed to work great for me, but since I don't use this phone on a regular basis I don't know how to judge the 3/4g performance.
Also, I'd love to hear about maps performance (GPS, compass, etc).
I know I'm opening a can of worms by asking about this stuff (everyone will be hyperaware of things that never bothered them before), but it's useful to know as feedback.
Data seems normal to me. GPS and compass seem to be working fine for me also.

Surprisingly this is actually more stable than CM9 lol. The camera is smoother and has more options and the Google account synching is easier. The transitions are fast and cool too.
While I'm not a fan of the navigation bar due to the smaller screen, I do love the easy access to the multitasking. It makes switching apps easier. Is this something that you could possibly port without the navigation bar when you fix the buttons? Like give an option in the settings to replace the search button for the multitasking action? I can access the searching from the top widget. Just throwing ideas out lol.
Also the UI sounds are not working, along with the keyboard sounds. I also get this message once in a while about the "CM updater stopped working" it's not a big deal. I haven't used the data much, so I'll report in a little while. Worked fine during the little moment I used it.
Update:
UI sounds are working. Never mind. Let's see if it's consistent or not lol.

Glad to hear it's working out stable for you!
I'm not a Java/Android developer per se... I'm a bit of a self-taught hacker and the majority of my work for this was really about the kernel and forward porting the changes from 3.0.8 samsung sources to the 3.0.43 that CM uses. Adding things to the settings seems a bit daunting to me, but I'll look into it. Always wanted a reason to actually start developing for android
I can tell you that on my SGS3 (and I imagine on other phones as well), the home button, when as a long press, brings up the multitasking menu. This would probably be the immediate answer to your situation for this phone.
I could also possibly just offer up a flashable zip to remap the key and that would be much easier for me.
My long term goal really is to get this into github (and into the CM nightly cycle) and get my kernel changes into the cm kernel for msm8660 so I don't have to maintain the patches myself.

I meant to mention that they start working after the first time you adjust the volume. This seems to be a general CM10 bug as I've had it (and seen people complain about it) on the SGS3.

Not sure if I just haven't found the option yet but can we extend how long the notification light blinks after a missed call, text etc? It seems like it may only flash for 5 or 10 minutes. I know it seems like not that big of a deal but I would like to know a way to change it. I'm dispatched for work through text so not having to constantly pick up my phone to see if I have a missed call or text would be ideal. Thanks in advance!

Well after some more homework it sounds like this has been going on for a lot of HTC phones. This is my first one.Is there an app or something that can bypass this 5 minute timeout? I'm assuming it's probably something I would have to be rooted for since apps like liteflow don't seem to work. Any help is appreciated.

Light Flow has a "HTC alternative direct mode", and it states "Phones such as the latest HTC One control the LED differently when running in Direct Mode. This option should enable flashing the LED." Granted... I am unsure if you need root for that option. Same with Direct Mode. Only option I am sure that needs Root is, well, Root mode, lol.
