bit difficult to explain in a title field
but are there any apps where i can put a check next to certain apps so if they load themselves up without me clicking on them the app will kill them automatically?
sometimes when i open advanced task killer i see apps open that i havent ever opened such as the amazon mp3 store app.

Like the Startup tab at msconfig in Windows. Yes, that would be great. There probably is one already but with 40,000 apps and counting, I haven't found it.

this app's name is: "autostarts" (not free)
I use advanced task killer and minutes later I see MP3 Store, and Messages running. Before I saw a few others. Are they set to start running in memory for some reason? Not sure if they eat up much juice, but I wonder if I can make a list of certain ones and disable their start up somehow. Is there a task killter that blocks startups?
same here we need something to block these apps
Messages is required to recieve MMS (Even if you use handcent or chomp or something else as your main client). We tried removing that once in the hero forums and it caused ALL sorts of problems and force closes)
The mp3 store is usually ok to remove though.

Thanks codemonk,
Do you know that setting in advance task killer is that says "auto kill level"? It is set to disable now, but what does it do? Thanks.

I'm not sure...I avoid task killers as a rule (I installed one earlier to test something for an earlier thread and uninstalled afterwards once I got my info).
http://geekfor.me/faq/you-shouldnt-be-using-a-task-killer-with-android/ - This should provide some good info on it.
The better solution, especially for apps that you don't intend on using, is uninstalling the app (there's a whole thread talking about which ones are safe to remove).

yeah, that is a great idea. I imagine if I wanted it back I could just install it again. Thanks Codemonk.
Why do you need those apps not running? Android will kill them if it needs more memory.
Why are people obsessed with killing stuff? It's not like your phone runs better with 192mb of free memory vs 163mb...
it actually does, as well as lets the battery last longer since it isnt using as much processing power

Let the phone run for a good 12 hours. I was down to 42MB free basically idling and only using Handcent. Killed a few tasks and back up to 175 and everything is snappy again.
I don't like having to use a task killer, I didn't have to with my N1.
maybe there will be an app like Scotty for windows 7. I check and a bunch of bloatware starts on it's own. It's all marketing bs. When there is a nice root stripped down, with all the nice stuff enabled I'll do that.
download startup auditor from the market. great little app to select and unselect which apps you want to load when the phone powers up. only costs $0.99 usd

So if I leave it to no apps, will it load up with 0 apps running? Will it also prevent apps from randomly starting after phone is already on? Sounds like a nice app.
Unless startup auditor disables the service there is a list of apps that will randomly start up at times. I went into the application settings and apps like MP3 store don't have an option to uninstall.
I have used task killer to kill all apps and within minutes some start again.
"thecodemonk" why do you not use a task killer. I have only had an Android phone about 24 hours now and got a lot to learn.
First thing being how to enable tethering.
I have mine set to "safe" and it auto closes things when screen goes black.
Make sure you "IGNORE" certain apps... like the clock or else your alarm wont work... I almost over slept
I have the following set to ignore:
Messages
Handcent
clock
gmail
Mort Music player
Fastbright
Check out the application "Autokiller." This comes with preset values (optimum, moderate, aggressive, etc.) so that apps will be killed off once your free memory drops below a certain point. This app works great, but it does REQUIRE root to function and must be rebooted to finish applying the settings. Also lists all apps, processes, and services which can be killed off manually as well.

I've been trying to find AutoKiller, yet I can't find it in the market. Is it here on the forums?

It is in market, search "autokiller". Requires root access, but I can confirm it is working fine.
Wanted to add that I am annoyed by programs that I never intend to use running in the background. From recovery I used Android Commander to quickly select and delete every .apk in /system/app that I never wanted to see again.
Helo guys saw this topic and was over at androidcentral and saw this article which talks about an app that would kill any app that autostarts.
won't let me post links as i'm a new user, but go to androidcentral and look for the article about the app autostarts or just google "autostarts"
using task panel to kill the "junk" like amazon and mp3 store- also any program that doesnt attach itself to things like facebook or messages - i use skyfire so i have set that to autokill but leave the "internet" running..
i also use this to switch between apps running.. having to hit back back back or even going to home then program list then finding it is a long process.. for example ...
i get a handcent message - go into the threaded sms- type and im done - holding down the home screen doesnt pop all the programs up - therfor i set task panel up to stay on my status bar and hit it then go to the program i want.
I thought the newer android operating systems did not need a task killer, yet there is one included on the sensation.
Is the inclusion for the sensation, ginger bread, or?

The task killer is definitely a HTC app. I'd not use it, it can't even report the amount of free RAM correctly.
To test, goto Settings --> Applications --> Running Services, at the bottom of the screen you'll see the amount of RAM used and free.
Thanks..
Is the correct way to turn it off in the settings section of the task manager app?
Do you use another task manager?
I have not used a task killer since android 2.1. I really don't believe you need to manually kill apps in gingerbread, but some people might disagree.
If you want to manually kill app, you can setup a shortcut to running services on the home screen.
Select Personalize -- Shortcut -- Settings -- Running Services
This is the best way to kill an app or process since we are doing it in gingerbread.
Thanks.. that's what I've always read also.
Threw me for a loop when I say this task killer on the phone.
I don't use the task killer to free memory as i believe it is pointless on android. I never installed a task killer on previous android handsets. However, I have found the included task killer invaluable for killing programs which have crashed in the background, hogging CPU cycles.
I know you can do it through the settings menu but this app is more convenient.

Don't install or use a task killer. I create a shortcut to the "Running Services" in the settings menu and close out the music application when I'm not using it.

I've seen this to.. However every other system tools/widget i tried show the same amount of used and free memory as the the task killer. So is there some hidden app running somewhere that "running applications" won't see?
I never run out anyway tho so it's not an issue.. Just strange...
I don't think there are any hidden apps or process which would account for that much differences in memory reporting between Gingerbread and 3rd party task killers.
Its more likly that the task killers was written with android 2.1 and 2.2 in mind. They are simply not working correctly in gingerbread.
Don't forget the gingerbread only available on small % of Android, most devices are still rocking with 2.2 and 2.1 (read an article on this in one of my news feed, but can't remember the source).
P.S. my xoom also have this problem. Some app report complete different available memory from running services.
Bottomline, I'd always trust the amount of ram reported by running services over any 3rd party app.
i'm pretty confused. it seems the only way to access anything about an app is through Settings > Applications > Applications Manager then select the app. but it doesn't give any detailed info regarding the app, like version number. where am i supposed to get that info from if i need it?
I'm looking at my App Manager and it shows versions under the app titles. Another way is usually within the app. What app is it?

strange since my app manager doesn't show version numbers. it was Facebook messenger. I figured out how to get to settings within that app though. had to long press the back arrow button on the phone and it would pop up with a menu. but still for other apps it didn't give me that option in app manager.
Around 1.5 years back, I used to use an app which provides me all components of any (user/system) installed app on the device; i.e. services, broadcast, intents etc. I downloaded that from play store which was having a blue gear icon. I used that app with the time of greenify. I have searched the app in play store installed app history but I have forgot it's name completely.
kindly, if you remember or points me to some direction, I will be thankful.
was that app pre-installed?
Kernel Adiutor?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.grarak.kerneladiutor&hl=en_US
Disable Service?
https://apkpure.com/br/disable-service/cn.wq.disableservice
Thanks to all you. That app was having a white background and list of installed user and system apps. On tap on any app, it further shows services, broadcasts, contents etc. On tap on those options, further it shows to enable/disable the relevant services/broadcasts etc. When we enable/disable the option, a blue gear icon appears and options get enable/disable.
Still I fail to remember it's name.
Yes, I got it. It was Myandroidtools. Thanks to extreme0 who suggested me Disable service and when I saw installed it and opened more app section, I got it what, I was remembering since last 7 days.
