[REQ] Samsung Galaxy S camera bits... - Nexus One Themes and Apps

Not sure if this is even possible but, my wife has just got a Samsung Galaxy S.
Overall the phone is quite nice, but while playing with the camera I came across the panoramic photo setting.
This is simply stunning.... the camera basically takes a series of 8 photographs, BUT this is the part - it tells you were to line the next picture upto, but I mean flawlessly and very quickly.
The stitching of the actual photograph in the end is fantastic.
I'd love this function on the Nexus, if you have played with one you won't grasp how easy and quick this function is. The best I've ever seen.

Did you take the attached panorama? That's amazing!

Yep, taken with the Samsung in about 2 seconds.... bloody brilliant.

You know...for most of the Samsung Galaxy features I say "If you want it...go buy one" However this is something, personally I would love to see. It'd be fantastic to have so this earns my bump of approval.

Any other great features like touch focus and settings like htc desire cam?
If yes I'd rather get this cam instead of desire cam for 2.2

Yes, it has quite a few nice features.
It has a decent selction of scenes.
Backlighting, Black and White...etc.
The macro mode is also very decent.
It has the touch screen focus also, so where ever you touch the screen it focuses on that point.
It has blink detection, but I haven't seen face detection as yet (trying to get it out of my wifes hands! )
I think on reflection I would have this over the Desire one.

Sounds great!! Thanks!

Guys,
I've been playing with my wife's Galaxy for a while now and it's brilliant.
The camera is stunning, HD video recording is super stunning.
The Music is awesome and with the EQ settings and different 'scene' like live music and concert hall, even 5.1ch!
It's bloody fantastic in some ways, I think I'm going to sell my Nexus and get one!
The stupid part?!? I have a 16Gb unlocked one here on my table that I sold tonight - doh!!!

Just horrible there is no camera flash wtf were they thinking lol.

I know, that's what I keep stumbling on.
Can I live without the camera flash and the trackball notifications?
The Samsung takes VERY good pictures in low light on the correct setting, however you have to keep it still for as the shutter is open a long time in comparison.
The pics I took oon the Nexus with the flash were quite washed out anyway.....Hmmmmmmm, decisions, decisions.

that picture in the OP is amazing.
this feature would be nice if ported to the nexus.

Nice idea! Btw my old htc trinity on winmo 5 had this function, too.
Wow and now I'm dreaming of a "sweep panorama" function of the new sony cams

I want the Panorama-Feature too on the Nexus
By the way: Its not that stunning. Done on Windows Mobile 2 Years before with the same "it tells you were to line the next picture upto, but I mean flawlessly and very quickly."... But its still a nice Feature

[Q] Nexus S or Desire HD, what would you choose?

Hi All.
First sorry in advance if this is the incorrect forum.
I really can't make up my mind what handset to go for, and I'm wondering if you guys can point me in the right direction...
Argh, they both seem like very good handsets!
Nice screen or 720p recording,
Gingerbread or FM Radio,
Sense UI or clean stock,
Gyro or DOH!!!

IMHO just get whatever has the best battery life. Theyre both great and Xda will have what u need in software for either
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk
It honestly just depends on you.
Think about what options you would use more and go from there.
I picked the Nexus S for 3 reasons.
1. AMOLED LCD
2.Direct updates from google
3. Quality
Sure 720p recording would have been nice and I'm not sure why it wasn't included, but the question for me was how often do you really record video ? Not often enough. But I do stare at the LCD screen for oh about 3 hours a day.
Both are great phones, the Nexus S is a tad bit more powerful.
You can't go wrong with ether phone but I'd personally choose the nexus S. ( Hence why I own one. This was my exact dilemma) ( well Nexus S or Inspire 4g)
Thanks guys!
I think the Nexus S it is then.
adding to the list, i'd like the nexus more co's of the front facing camera.
Nexus S of course
Desire HD is not even a comparison

This is like deja vu for me...lol.
Its the exact choice i was faced with back in december before i got my nexus. I was soooo close to going with the desire hd. But i didnt obviously.
The main single reason i picked the nexus s? Get ready for it....
Battery! Yep, i really wanted the desire hd as im a big htc/sense ui fan when it comes to smartphones. I had the hero as my previous android. Still got it around somewhere. But anyway, the 1230 mah battery totally put me off. Coming from the hero i knew how power hungry android and htc handsets were.
I mean, come on...a 4.3 inch super lcd running android with only 1230 mah battery? I just read around and came to the decision to go with the nexus s.
In terms of general performance, from what ive read and seen, both phones are more or less equal in the power and speed department. Apart from the gpu that is! Nexus takes it in that department quite comfortably, but i dont really care that much about that.
Ive come to the conclusion that complex 3d games on touchscreen smartphones just doesnt really do it for me. Always too awkward.
I really wanted the desire hd... oh well.

that's a 50% / 50% split i'll say
the main reason is because the SNS is pretty bare-bone feature wise, compared to the other choices out in the market
That was my 2 choices too. Went with Nexus S for 3 reasons 1) battery life 2) SAMOLED and 3) Google updates. Front camera was a bonus.

[Q] Is the camera any better than HTC's normal standard in this area?

Being as my Arc has a fairly decent camera and knowing what HTC's normal camera quality is like. Would changing from the Arc to the Sensation be a big step down in this area? Same goes on the video recording side of things?

Yes. The only exception was the N1 that added 720p but it was capped at 30 FPS i believe? Not sure.
But the NS is missing a hardware piece that allows 720p recording.
Edit:
Considering one of the lead Android devs said on his twitter that 720p recording is not available on the Nexus S due to hardware bandwidth limitation, I tend to believe him.

When i rooted my epic and used Simply AOSP ROM i didn't have a complaint besides the phones bulk. I wish it were as easy as ripping off the keyboard underneath
but yeah, the nexus is a much more fluid device all around, but the camera blows
I have had an Epic and now NS4G and i would not go back. TW framework made the Epic slow and the battery was atrocious in comparison to the NS. To each their own, but you aint takin me back there....IM NOT GOING BACK!!!!
Nexus may not be the best at any one thing, but the total package beats almost every other Android set on the market.

id say the nexus is a decent and very stable device. It excels at getting the job done without hesitation and i really do like that.
thinking about the 720p camera from the epic compared to this standard camera, i've come to conclude the nexus is a DEV phone and not ALL android phones are high-end with high-def capture ability. When you have a dev phone, you want to develop and test on it and be assured what you have created will work on virtually ALL android devices... so it makes sense why they would have done that. I just miss having amazingly detailed pictures a lil
Pretty much. I toy with my phone too much to care much for all the OEM overlay stuff. I had my Epic for three months and now my wife has it. It is a great phone and the pictures are very nice, but I do not take a ton of pics and normally have a point and shoot on me anyway, which does 720p and has great quality pics, so my phone is always the last resort.
I like the hassle free goodness of the Nexus and the abilty to "just get the update now". I am an impatient SOB more than a camera phone snob.

More than likely...One of the benefits of having four lines on my Sprint account is annual upgrades...I was offered a free upgrade to the EVO3D and am turning it down, because I want a dev phone. I will wait on Nexus 3.
I don't miss the buggyness of TW but you have to admit the added functionality it offers. I sold my SGS because I was so frustrated with the limitations and now that I have the NS I have to admit, this is the fastest phone I've ever used period. Even out of the box! I was a bit hesitant thinking it would be a re badged SGS but I am amazed what good software can do with hardware. Nothing like the SGS at all.

Need to port the MT4GS camera.apk

So I was watching the review for the MT4G Slide and it seems that the camera is close to the same with some differences i.e. sweep shot, burst mode... all that. SO I'm pretty sure with this being a Sense 3.0 device that we can port this gem over and have just as good as a 8mp cam as the MT4GS in terms of features. Any news on a leak of the ROM? I think it leaked to the EVO months ago, but that seemed like a buggy pre-release...
Here's the video review.
http://www.youtube.com/embed/6t3W-sbgy-Y
From what I heard it's a mixture of hardware and software that gives the camera it's capabilities. I hope I'm misinformed though.
There is a lot of hardware differences. There is hardware back lighting of the lens. Also there are different lens. So I don't think the app will work with our camera, but you can download other camera apps that provided all of those shooting modes.
The MT4GS has a backlit image sensor, and has a fixed aperture @ 2.2. I haven't the slightest clue what a back light on the imager will do, but I do know that a wide aperture of 2.2 will give better low light performance, and should provide decent blur/bokeh for a camera phone. The software itself seems extremely similar to what we have as our phones can capture an image with almost zero shutter delay as well. It's the way they're marketing it that makes it sound that much better than ours, but in practice both the Thunderbolt and the sensation snap pictures almost instantly. Be sure to disable the image review for the absolute fastest shot to shot performance.

Oh, I didn't know it had those. Very cool. Those should be doable on our phones as it's all software related.
I happen to own a MT4G Slide... have for quite some time. Unfortunately, due to several NDA's, I can't release anything information that we haven't made public via press release.
What I can say, is that hardware wise, here are the differences. MT4G Slide has a focal length of 3.69mm vs Sensation 4.31mm. It has focal ratio of f/2.2. For relevance, G2x is f/2.8, Galaxy S f/2.6 - (one reason why they take such good 'night' shots). The lens is huge.
Here is a really good article about BSI (Backside-Illumination)
http://www.cameratechnica.com/2011/06/23/technology-demystified-backside-illuminated-sensors/
Essentially, BSI aids in the delivery of more light vs a CMOS sensor with just frontside-illumination because the wiring sits below the lens as it protrudes from the back of the phone.
Software wise, I don't see why Panorama couldn't be ported, however HDR mode might require more hardware/software tweaks, as three shots are taken simultaneously, enabling/disabling certain hardware implementations.
Attached are two diagrams from the link above.. showing how light enters a frontside-illuminated lens (Sensation) vs a backside-illuminated lens (see how diagram looks like attached pic of MT4G Slide lens without cover)
Thanks for the input. They say a picture's worth a thousand words......
....all the ones I'm thinking are curse words though.

Haha, owning a Sensation myself (and obviously loving the screen) I have mixed emotions as well. Hell, I have issues deciding just between my G2x, Sensation, MT4G Slide.. well as daily drivers.. ..
Anyways, the Sensation will need to be on 2.3.4 to catch up
The panorama would be awesome. I remember when my old Sony Ericsson's had that option. Man it was great.

Would you rely on the MT4Gs for vacation photos?

Basically as the title suggests.... If going on vacation, would you rely on the MyTouch 4G Slide as your vacation camera? Is the quality okay? Would the lack of a zoom stop you? What about that if you want someone else to take your picture, you have to hand over your phone to them!?
I would definitely replace my point and shoot with this phone. The different options on the mytouch are nice, and the quality looks superior. Then again, my camera is a few years old. And there is zoom on the phone; you can use the volume keys to zoom in and out.

Thanks. The zoom is digital though - not optical. Technically speaking, there is no reason to ever use a digital zoom. It is better to take the whole picture and crop it later.
Oh, I didn't know that's what you meant. I'm not much of a photography buff, but for simple things like vacation pictures I think that the quality and digital zoom are more than sufficient. And since I would likely be bringing my phone along anyway, the convenience is great.
Easily. It's a great camera.
Hell no.
My son is 9 months and is constantly moving. I just can rarely ever get a good shot of him! Any tips?

I will, cause i'm lazy and don't want to lug around a camera and phone to universal studios.
The pictures will be as they will be, good or bad. I just dont have the pocket space for all the devices
I work in photography for a living. That is why I chose this phone and I have been very pleased with my photos using this phone. I personally no longer carry a point and shoot.
I voted no.
If you compare the size of the lens with one of a good point and shoot (don't even try to compare with dslr) then you'll know that there's a quality difference.
The phone makes pretty good snapshots but i expect a little more when i'm on holiday.

Absolutely YES.
I'm a professional photographer and have been shooting for over 10 years.
Let me just keep it simple. 99.9% of the time (nowadays) when you shoot pics you just end up emailing them, uploading them to FB, keeping it on your computer etc...
The MT4GS camera is excellent for producing pictures to share online or to even print.
There is no need to have a separate point and shoot. The MT4GS has great built in options to do action, micro, panorama etc....utilize those and you'll be amazed.
Just buy a few extra batteries: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1224178
...and a good SD card: http://www.amazon.com/Lexar-MicroSDHC-Memory-Reader-LSDMI32GBSBNAR/dp/B004AM610M
You're all set. Have fun on your vacation!

Thanks! Very helpful! Anyone else?
Bump - especially curious about indoors, party, family shots, etc.
More than adequate for casual indoor photography. The most important thing to keep in mind is how the photos will be viewed. For many, it will be online. And for the rest, 5x7s will be as high as they go. This device is perfect for those scenarios.

Awesome feedback. Based on blog reviews, I didn't expect the votes to be in such favor of "Yes!".

Well don't forget: most people call themselves photographers because they know how to set their camera phone to "black & white".
