How to retrieve MSL (easier method no CDMA workshop required) - EVO 4G Android Development

Ok i saw a few people wanting to find their MSL with out CDMA workshop or customer service. I'll show you how. (I guess this doesn't work for some who installed the OTA update. I installed the OTA and am rooted and it worked for me.)
1. Install aLogcat from the market (its awesome and free)
2. From your dial pad dial ##3282# when the EPST menu pops up select view mode
3.Open aLogcat let it run for a sec and let it catch up
4. Press menu then press send and select email
5. Enter your own email address and send it
6. From your computer open the email and hit CTRL and F at the same time it will bring up a search bar
7. In the search bar type in MSL and hit enter
8. You should now be looking at a line like this
I/EpstBroadcastReceiver( 2089): MSLCODE 1:+HTC_RMSL:######
the #s are where your MSL will be
9. You are welcome!!

I heard this doesn't work anymore after the ota. I have tried a similar method using the ame app but no luck. Does emailing the log make a difference cuz i just scanned the log on the phone looking for that msl entry.

Couldn't find it. Followed each step to a T.
I'm on the latest OTA, rooted, BTW.

They fixed it with the first OTA. If you can get back to a pre-ota stock then that works fine.
Otherwise the easiest way is to simply call Sprint and ask.

i never had OTA ( still don't ) and it still doesnt show anywhere...btw

Then you bought our phone with it already updated most likely. Because it works with the base ROM that the Evo was released with. It's how I got mine.

this should not be posted in the development subforum. An article stating the same thing, which afaik doesnt work any longer due to the first OTA, has already been created over a month ago. The easiest way is to call Sprint and ask them. It takes two minutes.
Mods, please move this topic to General or QA.
Thanks

As an FYI if you want the mods to move something (given that I doubt they have time to sift through every post of every thread) click the little ! icon on the upper right corner of the OP. That brings the post to their attention.

i have the ota (rooted) and it worked for me
if you want a good reason to give sprint customer service tell them every time you open an app that uses gps the phone crashes. tell them you need to reset the gps receiver using ##4772579# and you need your msl to do so. they didnt even ask me why when i asked for mine.

no i just find it easier to scan stuff on the computer especially since my log was 10+ pages

perhaps OP can change the name of this thread since it does work once the OTAs have been applied....hence it is wrong.

Bummer. No go in Froyo.

Tugs Uptime Project - uptimeprj.com

Hello,
do you know uptimeprj.com? They got a team for Android too.
You can download the app for the project for free in the market. Its called DroidUptime.
But first register on uptimeprj.com by clicking the "subscripe" button at the top or here.
Now login and open the app on your phone, press the menu button and insert your password and username, set the update interval to 2 hours, go back and press start. (if you want to give your phone a nickname just write something in the "hostname" field)
Now join the Android Team by clicking the button in the middle of the site.
Have fun!
App thread on their site
I joined it earlier today for giggles since my N1 is at 16+ days, but I have yet to see the data show up on the server.. Still shows 0 devices, etc.. The service is running and it's updated several times.
Any ideas?
what is your profile link? Mine is http://users.uptimeprj.com/xpatriick/en/
Edit // I think this is yours? http://users.uptimeprj.com/khaytsus/en/
You have to add your system. I can't remember how I did it.. if I even did something.
Your Name and password in the app is right?! check it again please

Yep, it's all correct, I'll check it again, maybe look in alogcat.. Nothing in logcat, I've changed the password in the client (just in case I typoed), and letting it run again.

No it doesn't
Odd, I just noticed my Nexus and my wifes Aria both are not updating uptime.. Anyone else seeing the same?
Aha, alogcat tells me why..
W/System.err(24291): at org.r3pek.droiduptime.DroidUptimeService.getMACAddrMD5(DroidUptimeService.java:65)
W/System.err(24291): at org.r3pek.droiduptime.DroidUptimeService.sendUptime(DroidUptimeService.java:133)
W/System.err(24291): at org.r3pek.droiduptime.DroidUptimeService$1.run(DroidUptimeService.java:49)
Weird. I tried and tried to make it work, no go.. So I decided to put the phone on wifi and sniff the connection and see what's being sent up and received... and it's worked since.
Shame, I was trying to get the wifes Aria on the list.. it had nearly two months uptime, but locked up on her the other day.
Version 1.4 is on the Market. Hope it works better now.

How To Change Market Sprint Tab/Button Back to Downloads

I just discovered this by casual browsing a few mins ago by reading a post saying this wasn't possible. I said bs and went looking for solution.
I'm sure some of you already know about this from it being mentioned in threads here or there. I wanted to make a dedicated thread for those searching for the answer that much easier. Without further adieu, here it is.
Download an app called Market Enabler from softpedia: http://handheld.softpedia.com/get/Internet-Utilities/Misc-Shopping/MarketEnabler-88713.shtml
Install via your preferred method IE Astro, Estrongs, adb install, whatever.
From here, everything should be self-explanatory, but in case it isn't. Open the app; select the "save current settings" button.
Go to "settings list" tab and choose alternative. I picked [us] T-mobile (cause it's the only US option). Don't ask me what happens with the others. I didn't try.
Bam, you're done. No reboot needed. Requires root with 2.1/2.2. I have only used this with CM6.
Enjoy.

i wish you had posted this yesterday, I spent a good couple of hours fixing this, and posting rather long winded howto manually do this on cm6.
Haha, just tried this, works great, very quick, but in case it isn't obvious - it gives you the t-mobile apps in the market, and takes away the sprint ones. That's no biggie if you're on cm6 though, which doesn't have any sprint apps lol
Edit: haha fyi t-mobile social buzz works great on here, it's like friendstream, but has myspace support. And it doesn't have a widget sadly... Make sure to install t-mo social service first.

I'm intrigued. Link?
edit: I found your post. Could your method work for Sprint users by substituting sprint for another carrier? also confused as to the origin of the eri.xml file. googling it i come up with a lot of verizon forums and talk.

in theory it should work for sprint users to. i played around with it a bit, so far i changed it from Sprint to my carrier then to Verizon, and back to my carrier.
the build.prop file tells the market your carrier id, then google adds the market tab for your carrier.
i found out about the eri.xml file in the darchdroid2.8 thread, it changes the name displayed on the lock screen and the status bar.
so i'd say a sprint user could change the build.prop file to another carrier and change the eri.xml to sprint and it would work just fine.

about to start my first root/rom

Hello group,
Wish me luck. I am about to start my first root/rom install. Going with Andromeda. This will be applied to my 5th replacement phone for the auto shut down issue. It just arrived. I am getting tired of getting replacements and waiting for a good one so that I can go to 2.2. I have read the guides. I have a couple questions that I can't find a clear answer on.
1) I already have a paid version of mybackup pro. Can that be used instead of titanium?
2) My phone is up and running on the stock 2.1. Is it normal to restore all apps, data and system settings from the 2.1 phone to the 2.2 install? Are the system setting compatible between the two?
3) I think I recall some mention of writing down some number from your original phone so that if you have to set it back to stock for warranty. I don't see that in the official instructions though. Is there such a precaution necessary?
Thanks in advance.

1. should owrk
2.Never restore system data. Your just asking for trouble if you do.
3. Back up your efs folder from system and copy it to your pc. As roms chnage android id and imei
cool thanks for the quick response. Nubish question from your response. How do I backup the "efs" folder I don't see it using the phone to browse the files or mounting the phone via usb and browsing via the pc. Do I have to root it first?

Yes you will need to root it first and then you will need a files explorer that will allow you to get to the system files. I use Root Explorer my self. One of the few apps that is well worth the money
good luck with the first go at it. I just did the same the other day and must say best decision I made with this phone.
What everyone else said is good. I would also back up your contacts and write down your APN settings. Some ROMs change the APN.
Contacts:
1) Contacts > menu button > Import/Export > Export to SD Card > you will get a vcard file saved to your sd card. You should also back this up on your pc.
2) You can also sync your contacts with your gmail account. I usually take the vcard from earlier and import it into gmail.
APN:
1) Settings > Wireless and network > Mobile networks > Access Point Names > just write down the settings in case they change in the future.

Instead of this nonsense
You will be nothing but happy after flashing. I do not mpost much on here, just read and read, but this site is excellent in finding what you need. I ran Phoenix for a while and it was very good, but I have flashed Serendipity 5.0 with the latest Speedmod kernel and its working great. Battery life seems to have improved for me with this combination.
So did you flash?? What was the outcome? Success? Check out Ceszar's continuum theme for Andromeda, just love that along with Andromeda 2.0
I'm curious too as to how everything went for you.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Yes i flashed. running andromeda for the past couple days. seems fine. much faster and the gps lokcs in seconds now. with 2.2 i can now use skype, flash, chrome to phone and use the power button for the camera shutter. All wins for me. I am not sure I get any more battery life out of this setup. I have been playing with it non stop, so I don't have any real world numbers on the battery life. I also learned that mybackup pro can't restore apps backed up from 2.1 to 2.2 I tried 3 times and every time the apps would fail at some point and I wold have to hard close them.
I have noticed a couple times that I have lost the data connections either on wifi or the 3g. Not sure it's the rom, hardware or just plain bad cell sites. but on reboot the connections were fine.
Over all impressed with the dev team for adromeda. They have an irc channel and there seems to be someone always there to answer my questions.

Just an update.
I rolled back to the untheamed 1.0 andromeda and then applied the DMT Dark Theme. did not like the battery meter so loaded modded circle one. Pretty happy with the look now. See the attached running launcher pro.
That looks really good.
I wish I had seen this thread before you installed that new ROM. I would have told you that stickies are for sissies.
Do it all from the seat of your pants and depend on luck. That's what I say. (j/k)
Do you see that business about restoring all system data? I tried that yesterday, I think it was. Got a good install of Paragon RC5. I think I then tried a full system data restore from TiBu. Rebooted the phone and it started back up so that it required a PIN to unlock it. I guess because I had been using that function before install of RC5. The PIN did not work. Tried this method not only once, but twice. Finally figured out how to use TiBu for real, I think. Makes me wonder if these locking schemes are worth using. I suppose they might buy you just a little bit of time in case of theft.
If you get to jonesing for something new, check out the ROM mentioned above.
Glad you're happy with your efforts!
.
Glad to hear it all went well for you. And I like the look you got going there. Seems like you did great for your first time

[MOD] GS3 SecEmail.apk & Exchange.apk with Exchange Security Disabled

DISCLAIMER: If your place of employment's exchange policy requires the use of a pin, please be advised that use of these apks may be punishable up to termination of employment, as well as other possible legal action. Some companies take their exchange security VERY seriously and this mod is only for those whose policy does not require a pin but are unnecessarily prompted to enter one anyway. Please speak with your IT department before using these files as I will not be held responsible for any mis-use of this app or any collateral damage that may ensue. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. In the event you need to get back to stock, I have also posted stock apks below which will get you back to stock. Download the 'Return to Stock' link, unzip the downloaded file, and then just push them to /system/app/
Below is the Mail and Exchange apks for the S3 with exchange security disabled. This is for those who use exchange support at work, but who hate entering a pin or password every time they want to unlock their phone. Many of us use low-level security corporate exchanges that don't require a pin, so the apk files below remove that security.
1) Delete any exchange email accounts from your phone and remove any shortcuts to the mail app from your device
2) If applicable, remove any exchange administrators from Settings -> Security -> Device administrators
3) Download the 'Hacked Mail apks' file linked below. THIS IS NOT A FLASHBLE ZIP. The apk files were just too big for XDA's upload limit and so I had to zip them up and host them online. Once downloaded, unzip and grab out the 2 apk files inside (SecEmail.apk and Exchange.apk)
4) Mount your phone's system as R/W (either using Root Explorer or 'adb remount')
5) Copy the newly downloaded SecEmail.apk and Exchange.apk files to system/app/ via root explorer and overwrite the older file if/when it asks, or you can just push the files to system/app via adb
6) Set permissions on both apks as rw-r--r--
7) Reboot
8) After reboot, create a shortcut if you want and then open up the Email app and set up your corporate account.
7) You will be prompted to enable security policy midway through... this is normal so hit 'OK' and it will not ask you to enable security any further.
As previously mentioned in the disclaimer, you can use the Stock apks to get back to stock if you run into any issues. Just download the 'Return to Stock' link below, extract the 2 apks out, and follow the same process as above.
Donations always appreciated. Enjoy
LINKS:
Hacked Mail apks: http://d-h.st/8xa
Return to Stock apks: http://d-h.st/aAk
Not working for me. Still requiring me to allow all the bull**** permissions.
Edit: Never mind. I completed the whole process, and even though it says I must enable all kinds of ****, it doesn't appear to enforce anything. Never been that far cause the permissions are ridiculous. Still though, with Touch my BAMF 1.04 rom on my Tbolt, it never asks for any security in the email app. Well hope I don't get fired, but I'm already sick of having to login through my web browser.
Thanks.
I don't even have an exchange mail app on the phone now. Also cannot add an exchange account in settings > accounts.
Thanks for putting these APKs together for us eschelon!
For those having trouble with these, you can use the tool located here to patch the stock email apps.
Not as easy if as just pushing these APKs if you dont have ADB installed, but if you do then it is a piece of cake. When it asks you for the name of the email app, just type SecEmail and it should patch and reboot. When you enter your info into the patched app, it may warn you about security, but it wont ever go into effect.

Tried to post about this last night. If you are trying to do this you might as well figure out how to do it this way. I have used this method for a long time now on multiple devices. It works the best because it patches the APK's you have and not pushing different ones. Once you get it working it's a piece of cake.
It will still popup and say something like "Your Exchange server requires security measures" and you just click OK or whatever and it doesn't actually implement them. I can confirm it works on the VZW GS3 stock email app.

Yes. What this does is change the code to show that you have security enabled when you don't.
I did this but when it booted it said "Android is Upgrading. Starting applications." I then went to use the app and it wanted to use the security.
Does it sound like I missed a step or is something special happening to me?

For what it's worth, my Verizon phone came with an update sticker on it. Turns out it had a software update on it that has only recently has started to be pushed OTA. HERE is a blog post mentioning the update that I actually have. Nothing seems different to my wife's phone, which has the old software version.
Could it be a thing with Verizon? Are you also running VRLGL1 Parcou?
Is there a reason for the significant increase in the file sizes, between the original and hacked versions? Thanks in advance for the technical clarification.

Use the method in post 4.
Everyone should use that method. It's much easier.
---------- Post added at 01:02 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:56 PM ----------
The patch in post 4 does the same thing everyone else is trying to do manually. If you what the steps you can see that it's pulling the apps. Modding them. Then pushing them back to your device.
I am on CM10 right now and it asked me to specify some of my APK names. Others may have to use Root Browser to see what their apk's are named if you have issues. Also if you run into this problem the names are case sensitive I think. If it shows like mine Exchange2.apk type it into the patch tool just like it looks.
I got an error when I did it on CM10 that Exchange services had stopped. However, I guess it worked itself out because I still get my work email and it's just as fast sometimes faster than getting it on my computer.

Had the same issue wanted it to show so all others can see. I found a way but not conventional. I created a new gCal account with a new email and called it by my job name. Then I shared that account with my current gCal account. Then on my work PC I downloaded the Google calendar sync app and logged in with the new work account. So now in my default account I just check the shared calendar for my job and it shows all my job appointments as well as all my other shared calendars.
Works for me

disclaimer
im not responsible if you mess up your phone its on you man i didnt and to tell you the truth there is not much risk here but always be careful
ok if this is in the wrong section mods please move it,
so i recently purchased a pantech pocket for the meantime until i get my new note 2 =) if you have a pantech pocket you should read up on this...
i had a hard time trying to find things for the pocket but i managed to do a little bit of tinkering myself.
first you have you pantech and you want root right?? Shortfuse.org download superoneclick. and bam your done
ok next, our phones have the ability to create a wireless hotspot but you normally have to talk to At&t and pay an extra service a month for it....not anymore ha just download secret codes revealer from the play store, run app, click search codes, then click list codes search for "softapactivation" click on it, click launch code, now there will be 4 checkboxes, check all of them except for "check to return APN failed" click save and thats it! this method works best if you get a widget to enable tethering after.
last but not least, our pockets, lol, are preloaded with flash player 10.3, i recommmend deleting it with an app likle rom manager, and download the latest apk of flash 11. make sure you have unchecked unknown sources and install and you know have latest flash player to watch your...errmm *adult videos*... haha

im not responsible if you mess up your phone its on you man i didnt and to tell you the truth there is not much risk here but always be careful
ok if this is in the wrong section mods please move it,
so i recently purchased a pantech pocket for the meantime until i get my new note 2 =) if you have a pantech pocket you should read up on this...
i had a hard time trying to find things for the pocket but i managed to do a little bit of tinkering myself.
first you have you pantech and you want root right?? Shortfuse.org download superoneclick. and bam your done
ok next, our phones have the ability to create a wireless hotspot but you normally have to talk to At&t and pay an extra service a month for it....not anymore ha just download secret codes revealer from the play store, run app, click search codes, then click list codes search for "softapactivation" click on it, click launch code, now there will be 4 checkboxes, check all of them except for "check to return APN failed" click save and thats it! this method works best if you get a widget to enable tethering after.
last but not least, our pockets, lol, are preloaded with flash player 10.3, i recommmend deleting it with an app likle rom manager, and download the latest apk of flash 11. make sure you have unchecked unknown sources and install and you know have latest flash player to watch your...errmm *adult videos*... haha
