AT&T has posted a new spec sheet on the Captivate here.
Couple of things stood out in contrast to information (speculation?) that has been posted on this forum and elsewhere, so wanted to mention them and see if any of the early purchasers can check and confirm.

I point these out since some people have assumed that the base specs of the SGS were carried over to the Captivate (e.g., 802.11n, FLAC support, max 32GB MicroSD cards supported). Has anyone checked these on their phones yet?

This is really upsetting.
This is android is not IOS4.... the N wifi protocol can be unlock with a custom kernel, Xvid can be played using rock player form the market, and about the 16gb SD limit, all manufactures say that but the SD controllers always support the max GB available wich is 32gb, so nothing to be worried about.
IMHO Rockplayer sucks , its only software solution can only playback low bitrate under 1000kbs, player in Galaxy S can playback High profile h264 30fps no problem with real hardware acceleration .
In contrast rockplayer will get you ~5fps, atleast on Nexus one it sucks.
Anyway back on topic , if AT&T crippled Captivate to this extend its really sad for media enthusiast like me. I can only hope they posted basic spec for Android in general. As samsung phones should come with mkv,xvid ect. and NEON hardware acceleration.

so are you saying we will be able to have a max of 48gigs? 16gigs onboard and then 32gig SD card?
Not even AAC? Thats BS. I was about to buy this phone tomorrow. Now after see ing all this gimping just to make sure its not better than the iphone 4 on paper, I'm not so sure. I might go to sprint for the epic like I was originally thinking.
I'm hoping someone will stuff a 32GB mSDHC into a Captivate and see whether it's fully addressable. Ditto the wi-fi radio for 802.11n capability (I find it odd that none of the dozen or so reviewers have commented on that). Any takers???
It's quite possible even AT&T's spec sheet is incorrect (and it won't be the first time recently they've screwed up...).

Now here's what AT&T lists under the browser functionality:
File Formats Supported 3.0 (A2DP / AVRCP / DUN / HFP / HSP / OPP / SPP/ MP3 / AAC / AAC+ / eAAC+ / WMA / DivX / MPEG-4 / H.263 / WMV3 / YouTube / GIF87a / GIF89 / PNG / WBMP / JPG)
Seems to me a browser wouldn't be able to support all those formats without the accompanying codecs available via the OS. Again, someone needs to run a set of comprehensive tests on this device -- not the Reader's Digest-style technical evaluations we've seen up until now.
I'm fine with no wireless-n, it eats battery too quickly, but Xvid? CMON NOW!! Anyone can confirm this???

Well I can definitely tell you tomorrow, I did watch h264 on it in the store, as for wireless N I'll know tomorrow.
I remember when they posted the Aria specs those were incorrect as well... Lets not jump to conclusions.

Just watched an mkv 720p episode of the office on rockplayer ARMv7
It worked surprisingly well. Not perfect but with some optimizations it could be flawless. Maybe if there is ever an armv8 version (what the hummingbird is) that would be all it would take
So far the cpu power of this thing has exceeded my expectations

Did you try an MKV with the default player to see if there really is lack of support on the captivate or if at&t is pulling some bs?

Wondering if anyone has a solution here, AVI and MKV have issues playing. The MKVs are 720p HD tv shows, and the audio is great, but the video is choppy\slow-mo. Has anyone managed to find a player or a method to resolve this? I know this has been discussed in other forums, but related to different phones, so curious if there's a specific fix to this phone, or if a 720p is just too much for the Inspire 4G to handle. I wouldn't think so since last year's iPhone 3G and 3GS and 4 can handle it just fine.... I'm thinking something is wrong or I'm using the wrong app.
I don't think the stock video player can do it, so you'll have to try some third party apps like VPlayer, RockPlayer, and Act 1. Let us know if any of those three get the job done. I'm curious too. Otherwise we may need to convert videos.

None of these seem to work. I wonder if it's the way my videos are encoded? I sure hope not, because all the MKV files I download from the torrents of tv shows I miss are formatted the same way. They always played fine on iPhone

Oh really? I don't see any Class 6 or higher on Amazon. Mine is a class 4. Can the Inspire 4G even benefit from class 6? I'm able to watch them off the memory card on my class 4 when plugged into my computer just fine.
the desire hd can support all class cards including class 10, so i cant see why the inspire cant either.
Yea class 4 should be ok i would think? Have you tried different size files?

I have 2 inspire 4g devices, and have tried both a Class 2 and a Class 4 card. I ordered a Class 10 from Amazon (they only had up to 16gb, not the 32GB like my class 4), so I'll report back tomorrow when it arrives.
The file I'm using is a 1.09GB MKV file.
I have yet to purchase the Inspire and this problem is one of the reasons that I am waiting. FWIW I have read many complaints from users having this problem.

Clearly it's either the way my video is encoded, or the lack of proper decoder on the android. I am at the end of my rope trying to resolve. I didn't like my iPhone because it's incompatibilities, and everyone with Android said "get an Android cause it'll decode anything" ... lol... wonder if we'll ever have a solution to decode a mkv properly.
You do realize that your phone is only capable of show video resolution up to 400p? MKV is mostly used for HD rips because it ends up having the best quality after compression, but your phone is not HD in the sense that it is over a standard definition television vertical wise (watching it in wide screen format).
Anything bigger will have to be scaled down by the player, sucking up battery life and you wont notice a quality difference. Aside from that, forcing your device to play something higher res will suck the battery life as well because it will be more intensive on the cpu. Why dont you just use xvid rips in avi format? Everything that's ripped in mkv is always ripped in xvid as well.

Yeah, the processing power is certainly there so I guess it's just an issue of improper codec execution :-(
Not sure on a player to watch them on android. I would just go through the top ones on the market place and do trial and error
I dont have a computer with osx on it currently, but VLC (the PC/OSX version) does convert file formats as well and it's free.

Yeah none worked. I think it's just the issue of the MKV file. They don't work on iPhone with any of the players either, I think it just takes more power and video processing to handle them.
Try xyflash, i used this on iphone. Android market has it also so i tried it. It plays 720p mkv bleach videos and sub titles work using mkv sub extractor. Not the best but it does the job i think
Did you guys try lower resolution files but coded in mkv?
Will the Atrix be capable of running 720p mkv files?

i doubt the native player can but i wouldnt be surprised to see some to some support for it later in the app market. most players out of box dont support mkv i believe

I just tested Rockplayer and yxplayer on my CM7 Galaxy S and I can play my avi's now. It COULD work on honeycomb.

I doubt that the xoom will be able to play .mkv files right out of the box. But Im sure that there are other players in the market that will be able to. I used to have an iPad (but sold it to get the xoom) and that was one of my main problems, not being able to play .mkv, but the VLC app worked perfectly for me, the only problem was that the iPad wasn't powerful enough to run a 720p or an 1080p .mkv file. Kept lagging and the audio was out of sync. Hopefull with the tegra 2 processor and the 1080p support the xoom will be able to play my files.

I tested all of them on Dell Streak 5, Nexus One and Inspire 4G, they can play but with lags. Ironically, the cheap Archos can play the same file fine. Go figure.
just make sure theyre not more than 4gbs. damn android file size limitation.

Galaxy S has native Divx support and can play AVI and MKV through the built in video player. No need for any third party players. I doubt the Xoom will have divx certification, but it certainly should be able to decode 720P MKV files using a software solution through Rockplayer.

I don't think it has anything to do with CPU as Archos doesn't have that issue (although it has many other issues)...

Not if you are running CM7 (as I stated in my post). CM7 = AOSP based.
OR u can use Handbrake to help u convert mkv to mp4 for playback on your xoom

But it will still be limited by the FAT32 file system. You can't play full length 1080p simply because the files are too big.

my sentiments exactly, my Archos 101 can play every video file I thro w at it, I did purchase the $12 Cinema Plugin, the inability of the xoom to play some video files is what is keeping me from buying one, among other things

Oh, I have an Evo and I think the file system on the SD card is FAT32. Can Windows 7 read EXT4?
Motorola's official word is to use <15MBps video on 720 and it will be fine.

Why are all my videos jerky? I've tried some of the guides out there for converting video, but they all look kinda jerky, regardless of the codec, and regardless which app I use to play. I even tried replacing the SD card with a faster class 10, and same result... anyone else have similar experience, and how did you resolve?
That's hard to say. I have some 720p mp4's on my Inspire that were converted with Xillisoft and they play great, which kind of surprised me coming from the Captivate, with its better graphics chip, that had some issues with the same videos.

I believe that those videos were converted using the Apple TV H.264 720p preset, down-converted from a 1080p WMV source. I'm also using a Class 2 16GB Sd card...that Class 10 would be awesome.

I just ordered the G2x - despite tomorrow being Thanksgiving I am being told it should arrive tomorrow with overnight shipping. Woo!
I'm wondering if anyone uses this phone to stream .mkv video to an hdmi receiver/tv? What app would you recommend for doing this and how does the G2x handle streaming 1080p?
This phone is free with a new 2 year contract or additional line until the 25th. I'm adding a kid's account and decided I deserve an early upgrade. =]
I use this. I haven't tried 1080p .mkv, but 720p .mkv and 1080p .mp4 work great on my G2x.
Thanks! The first comment on the page mentions it doesn't like mkv - I tried it probably 6 months ago and had the same problem. Maybe I'll get better results with 2 1ghz cores.
I'll give it another go when I get the phone.
Bsplayer has wifi/network access built in, and does great on 720p ac3 which other players have had trouble with.

I use a combination of apps myself....
To start the actual stream, I use "UPnPlay" which hooks into the DLNA service from Windows Media Player, so you have to set that up on the computer end... UPnPlay doesn't actually display the video however. For that, it loads an external video player of your choice. I use "MX Video Player" because it has a Tegra hardware plugin that does hardware video accelleration. Works perfectly for me.
i have tested MKV @ 1080p playback the phone plays them without any problems my question to the everyone is dose it even matter because the phones resolution is only 800 x 480 whats the point what is everyone converting there HD content to and what is the best software recommended ? also which player offers the best Hardware decoding playing on the skyrocket

MX player is awsome it supports HW playback which means it takes full advantage over the andrino 220 chipset . i have have had poor luck trying to find other players that play videos as well as that one the stock video player provided with the phone works good but can not decode all videos/sound
how are you guys putting files greater than 4gb on your memory card? all 1080p movies i have are like 10-12 gigs

+1 on MX Player.
The only player I know of that takes advantage of the multi-core processor.
mx player is good i like it as well. just wish we could format the cards ntfs
