Dock + Case - Nexus One Accessories

Ok well ... I need some help here..
I'm thinking of getting this dock:
http://www.seidioonline.com/product-p/crjhnx1-bkc.htm
The case I'm looking for is this:
http://www.case-mate.com/Google-Cases/Case-Mate-Google-Nexus-One-Tough-Cases.asp
or
http://www.seidioonline.com/product-p/csr3hnx1-bk.htm
Now first thing.. how is the cases? Is it rubber or plastic? How easy is it to get it dirty?
And second question will the first case fit into the dock or will I have to remove it? Thanks.

I have the case-mate and I really like it. The phone fills much safer in my hand. It's a two part case, a soft inner part and a harder exterior plastic shell. I don't know of any docks that work with it though. I'll probably get another case-mate when I get a new phone.

Thats a really nice dock for as good price, if you're anywhere near Mississauga maybe you can order 2 and I'll pick it up from you... as for the case, I ordered mine from NexusOneaccessories.com and BestSkinEver.com. I like the look of the phone so I got a smoked gummy case which is transparent enough to show off the branding of the Nex. Based on experience, dust that gets in between the case and the phone still scratches the back thats why I got my BSE for added protection.
Just a tip...

Just so you guys know, the dock connects via the USB only, does not use the pins on the bottom of the Nexus One.
Also the phone sorta hovers/held by the USB only, so it can damage the port.

I think Google killed their dock sales

If anyone else has purchased the charger dock you'll know what I mean. Who in their right mind would build a phone dock that doesn't allow for any protective case? I'm sorry but I'm not going to have a $500.00 phone unprotected! The only type of protection this dock accommodates are the zagg type skins. Anything thicker wont fit. How dumb!

I love my dock. Besides, it's in a dock...what's going to happen to it? Admittedly though, I HATE phone cases. Why buy a slim sexy phone, and put it in a fat girl suit?
Do you not remember the iPhone dock?

TOTALLY AGREED just get zagg or ghost armour they are sweet.
It's while out of the dock that scares me! But who wants to take it in and out of a case?
I'm just anal about keeping my phone scratch free!

We all are bro... I use the OEM sleeve exclusively with a screen protector just for the smudge resistance. But if you prefer to not use the sleeve, then you're best bet is getting a full skin.

Not everyone likes the 'invisible' shields / clear skins.. especially when the corners/sides start catching dust.. and they don't protect against dints, only scratches.

Agreed x10000!!!
What is wrong with you people??? You spend ya, over 500 dollars and dont care enough to worry if 'any' possible slip might mean a gash in the corner?
Honestly I have a gash in the top corner already and when it happened I almost cried. Why pay for something and not protect it at all (with even dealable solutions)??
The skins are worth it, take it off if you really want to bash the iphone lover. Not hard.
Though the car dock better be adjustable...b.c then I will not buy that either...
EDIT: Check this one, its what I bought and I LOVE it. Excellent feeling, not too 'fat' and it WILL protect against gouges and scratches!!!
This is obviously a personal opinion. Why would anyone design a dock to fit all the possible combinations of cases and skins instead of making it perfectly fit the actually product. I've had iphone/ipod and blackberry docks, and they were never designed to accommodate cases. What could be done, is that cases should be made to easier be adjusted to fit on docks. I've seen iphone cases that have a hinged bottom peiece so you can fit it on the docks. And are the cases out there really exposing the gold contacts at the bottom enough to even work with the dock?
Personally I wrap all my stuff in invisi-shield-like skins.
Cases are only good for protecting against a drop. Otherwise, I feel they usually damage the phone more than not having a case. All the dirt particles gather at the interfaces between the phone and the case (like around the screen where the screen meets the case). All the accumulated dirt scratches against the phone when the case makes slight movements from regular usage and storage.
I want to protect my phone as much as the next Guy, but using a case is not the way to do that. I rarely drop my phone.
I also don't use a screen protector at the moment but am debating getting one. From what I've read the screen is extremely scratch resistant and I'd hate to lower the clarity of the sweet OMLED screen. I do still use the provided sleeve though.
You don't need to read that twice. Sorry, double post.
Doesn't anyone else see a problem with making a dock that can accommodate cases? As I see it, a dock is meant for holding your phone while charging it. To hold your phone in a stable way, it needs to make contact with it fairly snugly. Making a dock that can accommodate a case means making a "looser" dock. Meaning that your phone will rattle around if you don't have a case.
This is all the more true if you're charging via the gold contacts on the bottom - the phone needs to sit on there pretty much perfectly for that to work.
The only alternative to having a dock that holds the phone by the case is one that supports it on the weight of the USB socket on the bottom of the phone as it's plugged in. Those docks always scare me - it looks like a lot of weight to be putting on a USB socket.
what the hell are you guys doing with your phones that you need a protective case?

Phone slips out of your hand and you drop it on concrete... etc.
Don't have to be doing anything extreme for accdients to happen.
I cant stand people that outfits their phone with ugly ass cases.
Why would somebody do that? This phone is made of scratch resistant material (teflon coating).
to each its own but in my opnion casing this phone is pure lack of taste and sin lol
And im assuming you dont have the dock because if you did then you would see just how awesome the dock is.
Spotify, pandora, my music player all through bluetooth a2dp. ENOUGH SAID
while I don't begrudge anyone for using a case if they can't be comfortable without it, I just don't like them. You say you can't see having a $500 phone without protecting it, but a significant part of the $500 went towards the feel of holding the phone in your hand. The glass screen and soft coating, the rounded edges, all that is part of the experience I'm paying for. I'm not going to give that up because then it's not my phone anymore, it's some larger uglier thing with the same guts.
And btw, phones don't last forever. The nexus will be just another obsolete pos in a couple years. I probably won't even still be using it more than 1 year. It would be one thing if this was a lifetime purchase, but it's a disposable tool in the long run.
Of the people who don't use a case, how many have cracked a screen?
I remember my first iphone, my wife bought be an aluminum case for it. I had the case for about a week before I decided it was just too ugly. I had the case off for two days when my phone fell off my bed, landed on a corner and shattered the screen. Talk about regret... Before that I had an HTC 8125 where the screen cracked in my pocket.
I bought a silicon case for my nexus, and it's true it's ugly. I can agree with the arguement for keeping it nude, but then I always tell myself: "It's not as ugly as a broken phone."
I do not use a case and have cracked a screen. I dropped my wizard and broke the screen. It happens; At this stage it is one screen over 5 years and change.
I can understand the desire to protect your investment but since I do not sell my phones when I replace them I am not as concerned. My phones typically do take a beating. My G1 as an example has scars all over the casing from drops, including a cracked camera lens covering, but the screen is intact.
I simply prefer the feel of my bare phone vs the added bulk of the case. I try various cases/skins but have never kept one on. The N1 will be the first time I have not used a screen protector though.
EDIT: For those who want a dock for a case with a phone I would recommend the Seidio Innodock Jr. It can accommodate a case and is fairly easy to dock (compared to the G1 docks I use) due to the swivelling usb port. Just align the USB connector with the trackball.
i have never had a case for any of my phones ever and have never scratched a screen or caused any other damage. Slip the phone in the sleeve it came with and take it out when you need it. After your done put it back in the sleeve and into your pocket. I dont have anything against people who use cases either but this phone really just doesnt need one. gorrila glass screen, and scratch resistant coating...its already in a "case" so to say

case that allows usage w/ Google dock?

I have an BSE full body skin being shipped for my new new att nexus one, but was considering getting one of those gel/silicon cases that most iphone users have as well. I also purchased the google dock for the phone. however, the dock cradles the phone perfectly. do you all remove your phone cases to dock the phone? are there any cases available that leave the charging contacts exposed?
thanks.
I don't think the dock can be used with any case. The tolerances are too tight. The only sort of case that would work would be a case that protects the front of the phone but not the back. Any added thickness to the back of the phone will inhibit use of the dock.

does that include the usage of clears skins like those sold by BSE and others, which is essentially a 3M laminate (i used to buy yards of this stuff and cut it myself)? i can maybe tolerate taking the phone out the case whenever i want to dock it, but i'd like to have at least some measure of protection. otherwise my option is to only install the screen protector...

I have not tried the skins from zagg etc. on this phone but I think those might be thin enough that it could work. I'm sure someone on here has tried.
It works with the BSE skin. Sometimes I have to wiggle it a bit or puch down a little to make sure it makes a connection, but it works.
This exact same question has been discussed in the thread titled: I think Google killed their dock sales. I'd ask a mod to merge your thread with that one.
With the bestskinever full body skin, I wasn't able to sit properly on the dock at all, and eventually just took off some of the bottom parts. The battery cover, and the front of the phone are still completely protected.
I picked up a cheapy silicone/gel skin that does a fine job of protecting the phone, and I just take it off at night/put it back on in the morning. It's not as big of a hassle as one would think. It does seem like the skin may be stretching a bit, but I picked it up for like $6 so I'm can't complain too much.

Gel Case Damaging Phone ?

Hi
Has anyone had any problems with the
"BLACK RESIN Soft Gel Case for the HTC DESIRE" from ebay
As it is quite 'firm' I'm concerned over time it will scratch or damage the desire's casing ..
Does anyone know of a decide soft flexible silicon case for the desire. One that can't damage the casing...?
any ideas / or comments ?
you might want to look at the invis shield thread which people are using, that seems to do the trick and is good
Thanks. Not sure I like them.
I got one. It is quite difficult to fit the desire in as the case is quite tight. It looks ok though after fitting the phone in
I have been using a 'Gel' case off ebay for about a month now and i too had concerns that it would damage to phone but I have taken it off a couple of times and there isn't a single mark anywhere on the phone!
It was a UK based one for like £2 i got.
Phil
I think a gel case would be OK, but this is a 'resin' case.. which is a little firm..
Thats what concerns me !!
Well mine is like a resin I guess. Like soft plastic material. It is quite firm and takes a bit of getting the phone in/out but like I say it hasn't make a single mark on the phone.
Phil
Cheers Phil..
I've ordered a cheap soft silicone case.. I'll see how that compares..
I had one of the soft silicone ones and although they are good protection wise and easy to get on and off I had a couple of issues with it.
I found that it made the rear of the phone go 'weird'. Hard to describe really but it made marks on the back cover with it being rubberised and having the rubber case on it left marks on the cover. They have rubbed off and dissapeared over time but I only used the case for about a week.
I found that it made the phone very bulky hence why i went for the 'Gel' one.
It was hard to get it in and out of my pocket as it gripped on my clothes too much.
Phil
Thanks for the replies.
The soft silicone case has arrives, doesn't feel as nice or fit as well as the resin case.
But doesn't feel like it will do any damage to the phone.
I'll see how I get on
i have one if those soft silicone cases, and ive noticed that when i remove it the back of my desire is unusually shiny, and now im wondering if that will return to the original non shine surface..
I had the same thing. It has returned to the normal state after using a gel case for a while.

This is why I went with the cheapo Gel case. I've had mine off and on a few times - no marks or anything. I was sending a text in a club and the phone was knocked out of my hand across the floor. No marks on case or anything.
The silicone case I have for my Blackberry is great although it tends to pull everything out of your pocket including the inside of the pocket - little annoying. Although it sticks to everything. you could leave it on the dash board of the car whilst driving and it wouldnt move at all.
pro's and cons. I prefer the gel one personally. Although the silicone stickyness comes in handy.
haha, my soft silicone case lost some of its traction i dont know why lol.
I've been looking around for cases for my desire,
can anyone recommend any sites that sells the resin gel ones the cheapest and has reputation for fast shipping?
I live in Canada, as much as I enjoy buying stuff online, I feel like I have to wait for like 100 years for an item to get here.
just changed my resin case to a soft gel.
Feels better add that to my new pouch that take the desire in the gel case..

[Q] Silicone (soft) case for Epic 4G?

I've never had a slider phone before, so I was wondering if it is feasible / likely that there will be soft cases available for the Epic? I really love the OEM silicone case my BB Curve 8330 has - it protects it from scratches and bumps while being relatively thin and pleasant to hold (and dirt cheap, too!). While I think reasonable people can differ, I believe soft cases offer better protection from drops (not just protecting the actual corners like a hard case, but reducing the shock to the phone as a whole).
I can see how it could be difficult to get a soft case to properly adhere to the phone, but I've also seen a few such cases for the Moment (though not very many, and not through more established channels - just isolated ones on eBay). Is this just a matter of taste, or does that type of case not work well with sliders (either because it won't stay on, or because in order to do so, it must impede either the sliding mechanism or other functions of the phone)?
I was looking for a case the other day and I did see one listed, but I'd like to see how it actually works. With a slider, most cases are two part -- the top piece snaps onto the screen, and the back piece snaps onto the back.
The top piece generally doesn't have a lot of surface area and really only protects the edges and gives it a lip so you can put the screen face down on a table or something. But because of that, you don't have a lot to work with for surface area for the case to grip onto.
http://store.cheapdroids.com/Zooly-Silicone-Skin-Jelly-Case-Orange-for-Samsung-Epic-4G.html is that soft case I was looking at.
In looking at that one and reading the description, it's not totally apparent to me that the case allows you to slide out the keyboard. It almost looks like a conventional silicone case, and perhaps you have to remove it to slide open the keyboard (which would stink). Alternatively, maybe there's an opening for the keyboard on the side, but then the back half of the phone would have to be able to slide relatively frictionlessly against the back part of the case.
I wish they had more pictures, or, better yet, that someone would post a hands-on review!
Thanks for the info though - it's good to have someplace to start!
the screen is big enough to use the virtual keyboard they should make a soft gel case that prevents it from opening ive had the phone for a while and i still haven't used the keypad
I saw a silicone soft case for the Moto Cliq in a Tmobile store.
See I want Samsung branded accessories for the Epic. Which means the belt pouch, and the gel case. Do you think any place will offer it?

When I picked up my Epic 4G this am from Radio Shack, I bought one of those soft rubberly like cases that fit the Epic perfectly. All appropriate areas are open. It is a two piece and the slider works with them in place no problem. Cost was $14.99 and is black in color.

I got that one too, then took it the hell off. My case did not slide well with it on, like there was some friction, and then the front part of the keypad got a few light scuffs from said friction. If yours fits, thats all good and dandy, but mind did not.
Yup, I just did the same, took off that
Yup, I just did the same. I took off that cover. I took a closer look at it and the nubs that snap the cover to the Epic do slightly stick up enough to prevent a smooth closing of the cover. Guess I will just have to keep in in one of those special cases or wallet like thingies for protection then.
Disappointing to hear, I prefer a softer case
I went ahead and ordered some $4 shipped case off of eBay just to see what that's about. I'll try to post pictures once I get it.

This is the downfall of sliders
Limited case selection!
It's hard to find a TPU case or a Silicone case like the ones the hero uses.
The ones that you guys are talking about (the two piece) ones do little to absorb shock. They're plastic coated with basically soft touch rubber...

The only TPU or Gel cases that I have seen that work well with sliders and provide protection are the Crystal slips ( Ebay, Boxwave ), TPU Gel cases ( Ebay ).
I have a Crystal slip on my Touch Pro 2 and love it but it will be a few weeks before the template comes out for a Epic 4g crystal slip.

Trident Aegis for Droid Charge review

Out of the four cases I have tried for the Charge I think I finally found my favorite. The Trident Aegis has some problems as did all the cases I tried but it is the best. It comes in 5 colors and they look great. I got the blue one and it looks as good in person as it does on the site.
The materials used are very nice and the surface has a great anti-skid finish that provides great in hand grip. The hard plastic outer shell covers all 4 sides of the phone for a tight fit. It is thicker then the Otterbox Commuter at the phones curve at the bottom but I actually like that. It gives the phone a great feel when using it in landscape mode. Even though it is a bit bulky it does fit in pockets easily. The corners of the case are heavily padded for drop protection.
All of the ports are covered to prevent dust, moisture or any other unwanted substance getting into them. I found that the usb port was hard to open at times (I have no finger nails) and that the hdmi cover opens a little to easily. The power button and volume rocker are covered as well and easily accessible. One of the things I really like is the dust filter on the speaker opening. The speaker is loud and clear and will not be getting dust in it. The lip that goes around the screen is not as big as the Otterbox but provides just as good of protection.
The protection this case offers is great. Its not as heavy duty as the Otterbox Defender or the Trident Kracken II but it is good enough for every day use. It comes with a screen protector that I did not use. I would recommend this case without a doubt. While its not perfect its does correct the things that I did not like about the Otterbox Commuter and provides just as good of protection. If I can get access to a camera at some point I will post some pictures to go along with the review.
Thanks for all of the info. both here and via PM.
I want to hold out for the Kraken 2, but my Otterbox is driving me nuts so I might just grab an Aegis.

The top and the bottom edges of the Otterbox are not covered by the hard plastic so it is kind of loose. The buttons are also covered which I don't like and the hard plastic is kind of slippery.

I don't like how the top of the silicon portion isn't supported by the hard case, so it easily separates from the phone if you lift the phone by that area.
I also find that, while it's nice to slip in and out of your pocket, the hard case is too slippery for my tastes. It slides off of sloped surfaces and I've almost dropped the phone a few times now.
Personally, I like having the hard buttons covered, but the silicon that covers the buttons doesn't seem to fit tight against the screen, so debris can work its way underneath.
I never use the HDMI port, so not having it protected by silicon makes no sense to me.
Don't let my dislikes make it seem like it's a bad case, it's not, but I think the Aegis will fit me better. The Aegis should arrive tomorrow, so we shall see.
I'm thinking of making a short video to show the differences between the cases. I'll let you know when it's up.
Moondrius and Romemo,
Have either of you had the Incipio case before your trident case? I'm wondering how they compare. I'm surprised to see the trident case so slim since I always incorporate trident cases to be monsters.
I had the Incipio double cover and the Feather and both were sent back. The double cover was alright until I noticed it covered the hdmi port. It did seem thin and less bulky. The Aegis is the most bulky of the 3 but in a good way I would say. Its slightly thicker at the bottom. I would say I liked the Double Cover more then the Otterbox but I used it for like 5 minutes. The Feather was complete garbage. Its a shame because I really liked the Feather when I had my Atrix.
Thanks. I have the Incipio double cover. I really like it since I never use hdmi, not sure I can handle anything that would be bulkier.

For the Incipio case? It's here:

Does verizon sell the Incipio case for the Charge? If so, how much do they ask for it? I really like the looks of the Incipio case and I am just trying to figure out if a covered HDMI port is worth it. I get 25% off accessories at Verizon so if the price is reasonable I wouldn't mind picking one up to try it out.
So I get my Charge on Monday. I have the cyclops series trident case for the fassy. It felt good. Overall I liked it. So I purchased the aegis. I bought it from the same ebay seller I got the fassy from: cyclopscase.
A good price too 23.33 with free shipping.

Yikes... Yeah, that's a definite weak spot. I was thinking that, if I go back to my Aegis, I would just remove that cover.
Is it easy to take in and out of the case? I bought the media dock and the car dock, which leaves no room for a case. So I've been using the zagg shield that covers the entire phone. Problem is with the car dock, the sides have been tearing off due to putting the phone in and out of the dock. It's pretty useless, so I want a real case, but I don't want to buy a new car or media dock for it.
Does the Aegis come off and on pretty easily?

IMHO no. The hard outer shell is designed to be a reeeeally tight fit around the soft inside cover. As a current owner I wouldn't want to constantly take it off and put it back on for a car dock. Plus I think it would eventually wear on the buttons and dust covers.
