first and foremost, if I've posted in the wrong place, I ask that a MOD kindly move it for me please...and you have my sincerest apology now, if its in the right place then disregard these words. Notice I said MOD, i don't need a bunch of people posting all the known comments like "this is in the wrong place" .."somebody ban this waste of space"..."learn how to read the forum rules"..."I'm tired of people posting here"...etc, etc. All that is not necessary, when a MOD can simply come right along and move it. If you insist on being a MOD "wanna be"..or a "tattle tell" (some refer to as snitch) Then just PM the CEO of XDA that Klyentel posted in the wrong place, who cares...as long as it gets corrected
EDITDONT WORRY ABOUT YOUR SWAP PARTITIONS,COMPCACHE,3RD PARTY SWAP APPS, AND YOUR FANCY LITTLE USER CONFIG'S.....THEY WON'T WORK ON THIS ROM--AND YOU DON'T NEED EM-
I highly recommend anyone who hasn't played with the overclocking hack recently brought to everyones attention, credit and thanks to Eugene, or anyone who has tried it and didn't like it, to make their first time experience or redeem their failed experience with KnK's version of the super-d 1.8 rom, seriously, it will shut down any doubts in mind that the hack makes a difference, trust me.
(Some of you may or may have not already tried this, if so feel free to comment your experience, as it will give others a better idea what to expect, similar settings don't count, you can sit here & argue this forum a thousand pages long about how you already tried this and that...how you turned swap on and off got the same results....benchmarked this, benchmarked that....well Daproy said this and Shadowich said that....[those are just random names of high posting users by the way, I'm not pointing anyone out, by all means those are two well respected, knowledgeable senior members for those who don't know] but I will not engage into a paragraph after paragraph argument with you, nothing stands as a valid opinion until you flashed this rom, not your own tweaked version, with your own tweaked settings, THIS ROM>FOLLOWING THESE STEPS are the only valid comments that will be made redeemable to any type of response from me, period. If another random member wants to post back and forth with ya than fine, but I will continue to ignore irrelevance)
And it would be greatly appreciated if off topic, sarcastic humor, LOL buddy chat, and pointless picture posting be taken over to a PM for private conversation...as it has nothing to do with this thread
BY THE WAY THIS IS NOT MY ROM, I AM NOT A DEV. I'M A HAPPY SUPER D USER WHO STUMBLED ACROSS A PIECE OF GREATNESS AND DECIDED TO SHARE. IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS, ISSUES, CONCERNS, OR QUESTIONS...I SUGGEST YOU CONTACT THE PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS TWEAKED VERSION OF SUPER D, HERE IS HIS INFO-- [email protected], XDA MEMBER NAME-KNK, TWITTER-DIGITALKNK
THANK YOU
Backup what ya got, Do a clean full wipe, download this zip:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=3J6RP7GN
extract it to ya pc, grab the setcpu.txt file and the setcpu apk- he forgot to put it back in the rom, so you will need this unless you have a copy of the apk on your sdcard already, place it on the root of ya sd,
transfer the KnK's custom Super D rom to your sdcard,
boot into recovery and flash,
after it fully loads, don't do anything, reboot again,
when it loads back up, go to your setcpu app and choose Custom settings
tweak your high/min the way ya want, I recommend 628/245
after setting it, reboot again,
when it loads back up, you will be completely amazed, I promise you.
Whats special about his version? Theres no swap/compcache, a few system apps are removed (so if you like the stock email, calculator, IM and all that, you'll have to port it back yourself)
Maps Nexus Multi-Touch enhancement already applied, cpu hack boot img already compiled and packaged
and probably more but IDK, maybe he tweaked the kernel or something, needless to say this is still Super D-1.8, and you all know how great that is anyway, credit due to the Dev-Ben Buchacher
but truth be told this is the fastest I've seen guys, really, It defeats the purpose of swap and compcache
just try it on ya spare time, and if ya follow the steps above I promise you wont be disappointed
I welcome all your opinions, negative, positive, flame me, blame me, hate me and be angry, I don't care....this is worth my time to post for others to try because my experience was that good, call it crazy, "placebo", imaginative, whatever....bet ya can't call me a lie flash and you'll see why.
Downloading this now can't wait to try it out
Thanks, I'll try this out too
The different fonts and colors hurt my eyes. I'll download it though...
And someone had to say something negative:
"The rom cooker app isn't even out yet and it's already happening."
That should rid the negative for a few posts
Wooo downloading now. Thank you for sharing.
i feel u on that some ppl just plain out rude lol!!! applying this now i will update as i go!!!! good look on this !!!

Whether or not the overclocking really works, this is pretty much the ROM combo I've been after for awhile
What are the required partitions and SPL?
I installed setCPU, but I'm not getting the option to increase the clockspeed beyond 528 ...
Where exactly do I copy the setcpu.txt file to get the additional clock rates?
Do I choose a different hardware platform (g1, magic, nexus, etc.) for the setCPU app?

put the file on the root of your sd---meaning just drop it on the card, not inside a folder
you will not choose a handset- such as g1, magic,nexus,etc...
you will choose the very last option which is Custom settings
please do not forget two reboots are required!! Follow all steps carefully.
I spent some time with the ROM and I wasn't noticing a huge difference in performance... Went back to Super D.

please do tell in detail....did you reboot after first flash? and again after setting overclock? How long did you play? Were there any decreases in performance? Such as lags, freeze ups? what did you clock? high/min?
People, dont get carried away, you cant just flash, boot up, spin clock speed up to highest your heart feels, then turn off and nandroid back to your old set-up, you have to do the steps above exactly as stated, and if you did indeed do so...i want to know more about what your experience and clock tweaks were, because one minor adjustment can make a difference.

Couldn't really tell either. I replaced Home++ with Advanced Launcher to make a better judgement, but as far as I can tell it's just the typical Super D speeds... which is of course, amazingly fast.
Tried at your rec setting of 628.

cool,
alright thanks for the input!
Here's an idea, if you're up for it...wipe and go back to the stock super D 1.8 with no cpu hack, and see if the speed feels the same....it'll be fast, cus like you said super d is fast, but I can almost guarantee it wont be the same
Umm wow ... I didn't think Klyentel would have made a post about this hahaha. In any case thanks .
I don't run it at 780 in fact My max is 580mhz since overclocking it to anything above that is a battery eater and doesn't jump much in performance.
Be sure to use profiles on setcpu that is the most useful feature on there.
I have these settings.
Charging
- 780max
- 384min
Sleep/Standby
- 245max
- 128min
Power < 90%
- 580max
- 245min
Battery Temp > 37.9
- 245max
- 245min
I have the profile set @ 780 when charging because I have the failsafe enabled which drops the cpu down if the battery is to heat up. So that's the only time I have it enabled at 780mhz.
Well I hope you enjoy the rom I didn't do much but just tweak it a bit like Klyentel said Ben did most of the work with SuperD which is an awesome rom all I did was tweak it to my liking
For those not seeing a difference you won't really at standard tasks, I have setcpu to on demand on the normal Super D 1.8 and set at 384 or 528 max you see no real difference... that is until you start multi tasking. Having 10 browsers windows open, snes emulator, last fm and documents to go the speed increase is greatly noticed as its at its heaviest usage that the cpu finally decideds to crank up due to workload.
If your gonna test then do so properly rather than a quick look and deciding nothing has changed. Gonna flash this myself later and do some proper more constructive testing and report back.
I've owned my Nexus for a few months and have noticed that if I were to update my Kernel to Netarchy I could potentially overclock to 1.2 Ghz.
I'm interested in doing this but would like to know if anybody could answer these questions before I get stuck in.
1. Does my phone need to be rooted?
2. Will the Kernel work in the UK with T-mobile?
3. Will overclocking reduce battery performance?
4. Do I need to be running a custom ROM to use the new kernel?
Thanks in advance

1. You just need Clockwork Recovery, but at that point.. you might as well get root.
2. Kernels work with any carrier. Carrier is not a factor, it just depends on what ROM you use.
3. possibly (not sure about this)
4. No but since you have to unlock your bootloader to put this kernel on, your settings will be wiped. So you might as well try a custom ROM.
You can't get dirty down with kernels and not try ROMs. You have to fully get dirty. What you're saying is like putting one hand in a muddy pool, you just have to put both hands in the muddy pool
Cheers for the tips!
I'm going to get so stuck in that pool of mud I might never make it out!
Just another question (the dreaded noob question) whats the easiest way to root?

There's only one way to root lol. The Nexus S is one of the few phones that are the easiest to unlock unless you count lazy one clicks.
Here are some guides to help you get started:
I9020/I9020T: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=895545
I9020A/I9023: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1007782
^^ You can find out what model you have by going to Settings -> About Phone -> Baseband Version
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1031760 is also another good thread to figure out what version of the NS you have.
E.G. mines is I9020XXKB3
If you get stuck, you can message me or whatever and I'd be more than happy to assist you.
You also have to go through each and every ROM to see which offers the most functionality for you based on added features. I have to say though, Netarchy's kernel (as you mentioned in OP) is a necessity. It's more stable than the stock kernel (surprisingly!) and offers a lot of goodies!
@zephiK: I have already taken a look over the Netarchy's kernel info/changelog, but could you please note the important differences between stock and Netarchy CFS ? Just the important ones, don't go into detail if you don't want/have time. Because, even if I have read the info, I still don't see some major differences (I don't count the Voodoo configs). Maybe I'm blind, lol. Please enlighten me.
I've just rooted and applied Cyanogen CM7 to my Nexus S.
I was wondering if anybody knows how to get the stock app drawer back? I dislike ADW launcher.

The Voodoo configs are enough to make you switch to be honest. Voodoo Sound is simply amazing, it can't be explained. Go use it for yourself and you'll notice the difference. Voodoo Color makes the color much better. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1002090 for the best Color settings.
All the features of Netarchy's kernel are in his thread. I don't have to restate what Netarchy said in his OP post.
But the main highlights are the EXT4 performance boost. This was missing from the stock kernel which significantly increases your phone's speed.
Raised default read-ahead value from 128 to 2048 (read: sd speed tweak built-in, scripts not necessary)
BLN: Want your LED notifications back? BLN is your solution.
OC/UV: Playing with Undervolts causes better battery life.
but overall.. experience with netarchy is faster and better battery life (without even modifying UV)
@JTopaz: You can either get ADW Launcher or LauncherPro from the market. The ADW from CM7 is different from the market one.
If you really want stock launcher, download: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=933517
So, essentially, it's faster with EXT4 and, at the same time, has better battery life than stock kernel ? What exactly improves battery life ?
Also, about ADW launcher. Does the one from CM7 come with a 3D launcher ?
Yea, I know these may be dumb questions, but there are question like these that don't actually have an answer lying around. Or at least I didn't find it. Yes, like I said, I have read netarchy's posts. But I was reaching for a more elaborate explanation; like: EXT4 improves performance in aplications where rendering bla bla bla bla, because it uses more available resources that bla bla bla. So that I could understand where that performance boost comes from and where it should be available, if I would actually need it, or whatever. Same applies to battery life. Why does it have better battery life ? It under-clocks in certain moments, etc. etc. ?

The phone is already using EXT4 but its missing a optimization thing. I don't want to go full in details about it. If you want to know whats it about, search for it on the forums. I believe it was supercurio that found it.
What improves battery life is the tweaks. Just use it, if you don't like it you can revert back to stock. I'm not apart of the Netarchy marketing department. I'm telling you to use it, if you dont want to use it im not going to try and persuade u to do so. It's your choice, I'm just saying do it.. im not going to beg you to do it.
As about ADW.. I don't know, the ADW included with CM7 is different from the ADW on the market. The ADW on the market does have 3D launcher, I use ADW EX (paid version of ADW which includes new features).
Edit: Here is the post about EXT4 found by supercurio. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=876069
It also includes a tweak that increases your SDcard I/O speed. And it's real, not the fake quadrant hack [this tweak is not EXT4.. its something else]
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1023664

I even said im not a marketer but im just going to lay these right here. If this doesn't convince you then I don't know what would.
Ending story: Make a nandroid backup, flash Netarchy's 1.3.0.6 kernel.
Try it... don't like it? do a nandroid restore
Like it? well..... you just gave another +10 to loving your phone much more.
I tried flashing my kernel to netarchy however when I rebooted my NS it just displayed a Google logo with the unlocked padlock. The rom I was using at the time was CM7.
I left it a few minutes but it was frozen on that screen. Restored a Nandroid backup and now up and running again.
What did I do wrong? I'm rooted with an unlocked bootloader. I really like the look of the stock rom so can I just update my kernel and then overclock?

Did you download the CFS CM7 version? There are four versions of the kernel. And yes you can use stock + netarchy. You just have to download the one for stock ROMs.
zephiK, I think you got me wrong. I'm not opposed to netarchy's kernel, or any kernel in particular. I am a more technical kind of person, that's why I put these kind of detailed questions, not because I want to find something wrong with those kernels, just for the sake of it. And yes, I know you don't advertise his kernel, or, again, any other kernel. I know that. I was just doing what I always do, trying to find out as much as I can about the update/modification that I'm going to perform on my phone, so that I won't break it and then come crying here for help like an idiot.
So thanks a lot for the info, I really appreciate that you took the time to write me back.
I have, in the meantime, applied the CM7 ROM with it's ADW launcher. Unfortunately, it doesn't have a 3D launcher, but the whole ROM has lots and lots of features that really make it better than stock. If netarchy's (or other) kernel has the same outstanding difference than stock, then yes, I would be stunned. Anyway, I will look more into it, then I'll see what I'm going to do. Thanks a lot again !
Hello,
I am running stock ROM with S-oFF and rooted. Ive got setCPU running via the methods used for temp root. (Basically pulled the code from the BAT files everyone used to overclock and temp root). It works alright, but after a reboot, I have to redo it.
I see people are running ROMs that include setCPU. How does a custom ROM manage to keep setCPU "set" after a reboot? Can the methods be used for the stock ROMers?
Also, I see that setCPU requests SU hundreds of times a day when I look at the SuperUser logs. Why is this? Is it bad?
Thanks,
Matt

thank you for the reply! Is this something that a stock rom could implement in its own? Or, should I consider flashing a custom rom?
Thanks,
Matt
Its a little hit and miss right now unfortunately. The kernels can still be buggy on some devices, though they, in theory, should work on a stock device. If you have issues you can always just flash the stock kernel back. Some love it and have no issues, others not so much. In fact some devs have stopped bundling their kernels with their roms and leave them as optional add ons because of issues.
Is cm7 expected do implement overclocking? If so, I may just wait for them to finish.
Matt
Not sure...they are playing cm7 for the sensation very close to the chest, lol, but I don't think so. Just a guess though.

Ahh...I guess that only time will tell what sort of advancements come in the way of overclocking (reliably and efficiently).
My theory is that setCPU is the cause for my headaches and may be the cause of most others using it as well. (Crappy battery despite conservative governors as well as phone freezes and data connectivity issues). Seeing setCPU request SU a few thousand times a day seems suspicious. I have it frozen for now, well see how things go.
Matt
I don't know for sure either, but I suspect you might be right, at least to an extent.
Howdy, So I just got my first smart phone a few weeks ago, the AT&T Skyrocket. Kinda odd since I have been in IT works for many years that it took so long but could never afford the upgrade, my cars sap every spare penny lol.
After getting the phone I spent a few days getting to know it and then rooted it so I could use Titanium backup.
Now long story short due to an unrelated issue with ATT they sent me another phone to fix an issue I told them was on their end (and sure enough, it is, I think I figured it out though, anyone else get charged for a text message when the ATT family map "pings" the device?).
So for the time being I have 2 skyrocket phones and figured this was as good a time as any to try out another rom/kernal on the 2nd phone in case I don't like it my phone will remain untouched (I am picky about how my computers are setup).
So that is the history lesson, I have read sooo much the last few weeks it has gave me a good handle on the general process ect. My issue is picking out an actual rom/kernal to use, I have read so much they are all just one big garble of random info and I could use some advice to pick out what would work for me.
Here is what I want out of a rom/Kernal:
Clock speeds/voltages unlocked, I am an oldschool overclocker so naturally I feel everything can be made better.
Better battery life, Right now the battery life is ok but a bit too close for my tastes and I also feel it is just draining too fast for what I am doing (about ~8-10%/Hour average).
Some improvements like the light meter being linear vs having big steps would also be nice, I know the sensor itself can do it from the the screens but the software just goes in steps I guess.
Stable! I want something rock solid stable that I can count on for a long time to come.
Thats about it, The stock rom works fine for my needs minus those complaints. The clock/voltages being the biggest complaint if I had to go with only a kernal to keep a stable ROM.
So what suggestions do ya'll have? Is there by any chance a modded stock rom that is just debloated ect but will still be stable, that would work nice if it helped battery life some combined with a kernal I think.
I don't mind trying a few combos of roms/kernals but only have a week or 2 before I have to send this phone back and would need to fully test each one so I figure I only have time to do that on a handful in that time frame (I am very through)
Rom I have no clue what would work best for me. Kernal the Faux looks pretty good for my goals but I am not sure.
Any advice would be great.
From personal experience, anything made by forum member mhx is incredible. His ROMs are always super stable and and stripped of bloat. It also has the best battery out of all the ROMs I've tried.
Mhx's Gingerbread ROM
Mhx's ICS ROM
This is the kernel that I use Faux's Kernel

Thanks, Those roms look nice for sure!
That brings up another question I have. I keep reading all this stuff about ICS but have not been able to figure out why it is such a big deal. Looks like just a different theme to me or is it more then that?
Is it more like going from windows 95 to 98? Or like 98 to Windows 7?
Is it worth going with ICS over the gingerbread?
Lastly I notice that they say they come with kernels, Does that mean I have to use those kernels? I assume this is not the case since you are using a different kernel but better safe then sorry.
Thanks for the help!

Thanks, I was kinda thinking that. For future reference, what does ICS offer that Gingerbread doesn't?
So I take it that this means there are stable gingerbread roms that should at least come close to stock for reliability/functionality long term? Any opinion on the above mentioned rom/Kernal combo?

Thanks, out of those the MHX, nexus and silver rom look to be the most up my alley, should at least give me a good idea if an aftermarket rom is for me.
One question I have is they all mention needing new Modem files flashed? This is different then the radios? Anything I should know about that aspect of it?

Yeah there are a number of stable GB roms. nexusmod4, mhx superlite, seanz skyics, tpcv3, silver ROM. Read through the threads and see what people think. I prefer nexusmod as my daily, but all those are good

agreed, all those x listed have proven to be extrememly stable. For best battery life with OC'ing and undervolting support use any of those roms with faux's 010m kernel. I was getting 1% battery almost every two hours with that, fauxclock app undervolt -100mV, and tpc v3, before i switched to ics

No, modern = radio. I always flash the radio before the ROM

I just flashed the 010m kernel on the stock rom to play with that first and ran into something I am not sure about.
I tried both system tuner and fauxclock, at first everything was working as it should then I noticed that the 2nd core said "offline" and it won't seem to come on no matter what even while running stress tests. Any ideas?

That brings up another question I have. I keep reading all this stuff about ICS but have not been able to figure out why it is such a big deal. Looks like just a different theme to me or is it more then that?

It's more than that. It's a lot smoother and faster, better performance in everything, hardware accelerated UI, better multitasking.
It's the biggest update the OS has ever gotten, period. Yeah, it's still Android at the end of the day, but it's a pretty big refinement.

Yeah, I am starting to see that.
Back to the issue of the 2nd core going offline, After some playing around the only way I could seem to get it to come back online was to install SetCPU along with fauxclock. This seems to make the 2nd core come online but I am worried that running both apps will cause issues with them fighting over who has control?
I much prefer setCPU for the clock speed controls due to the profiles I can create but no voltage control. Is it possible to use the faux for voltage and the setCPU for clock speed control? Or am I asking for problems?

Definately asking for problems. Only use ONE cpu controlling app. SetCPU does have better profiles but fauxclock has a few. Which rom were u using it with? It does disable the 2nd core by default to save battery, but enabled it as soon as it is required (i.e. games and/or benchmark.) TO check run a force close setcpu and run a benchmark, then home back to menu and run setcpu, it will show 2nd core as active.

I tried that, the 2nd core stays offline no matter what I do unless I run setcpu.
I would just run setCPU but then I would not be able to undervolt. I wounder if I could use one of these scripts http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20946429&postcount=574
That would take care of the undervolt and then use setcpu to handle the clock speeds? That would seem to be the best of both worlds.
not recommended. Use system tuner instead. It has almost as much profile control as setcpu, but the voltage control of fauxclock. It also has an option to force both cores online.

I tried it but didn't care for it. Still didn't have the profiling options I want. I like the setcpu since I can set it to have different CPU speeds at different times/situations. Maybe that is not worth the power savings. Whats wrong with setcpu?
I also had the same problem with system tuner as well, it would not bring the 2nd core online.
I've had my tf700 for about a year now but have struggled making it usable due to the awful lag it always tends to have, I have rooted, unlocked, and rommed it with cm 10.1. i also have tried using apps such as seeder and autokiller memory optimizer as they help a lot with my razr maxx but nothing seems to help it. ive done countless factory resets and done every combination of performance options baked into CM 10.1.
is there another rom i should try? or any way to allow it to use different I/O schedulers (thinking SIO) or cpu governers? (thinking smartass or interactivex) or should i try to overclock it somehow??
i just find it very sad that my OG Xoom performs superior to this "super tablet" in every single way.
i absolutely love all ASUS products and love the tf700! i just need help!
thanks for any advice

you could upgrade to cm 10.2 and see if that works for you.
or just go with cromi-x rom. lots of tweaks and options, great performance and multiple kernels to choose from (with cpu governor options and overclock)
in my opinion autokiller and the so called ram optimizers dont help. sometimes i feel like they lower the performance... cromi-x already has most of these tweaks aniway.
the lag transcends all the roms I've tried so far ( stock, cm 10.1 , 10.1.2 both stable and nightlies) I don't believe 10.2 is ready for the tf700 yet? I will try chromi x soon I guess. Any special requirements? Or just flash thru twrp?
Thank for the help.

You need to do a factory reset and flash with TWRP. Good luck.. :fingers-crossed:

ODEX, DEODEX - doesn't really matter after the first apps updating. sbdags, the dev, reports DEODEX to tend to slow down after some time. I tend to stick with ODEX.
No need to flash anything else as long as you are on the 10.6.1.14.4 or .8 bootloader and TWRP 2.5 or 2.6.
The kernel installer is optional, makes it fast and easy to try different kernels.
But as mentioned before, you have to do a clean install coming from CM.

sorry if im being lazy... but how do i know what bootloader im on? i know i have twrp 2.5.0.0 installed and the device is unlocked but im not sure about bootloader.
doing a clean install is no problem, but do you mean do a factory reset from TWRP or entirely wipe the whole rom slot?
and does the kernel installer flash just like the rom? and also, are GAPPS included?
thanks for the great help

You hold the power button + volume down to boot into the bootlooader menu. In the upper left corner, you can see your bootloader version.
A clean install is mean to wipe Dalvik, Cache, Data, and system. A factory reset is mean to wipe Dalvik, Cache, and data but during the Cromi x installation, a default setting is to wipe a system which are very much the same process. Yes, a kernel installer is a very similar process except it only has kernels and no others apps.

I can tell - you have been firmly in the CM world so far
There are no gapps packages to flash with this rom, when you flash you will be walked through installation options in the Aroma installer. Part of that is also which apps you want to install to /system (Google maps, Gmail etc).
No rom slots either - just partitions.
No need to wipe system - it's part of the installation process.
No need to wipe Dalvik/cache - it's the default in the Aroma installer
A factory reset in TWRP wipes the data partition except for /data/media/ and that should leave your user data intact. Naturally you will backup anyway before flashing, right?
And don't forget to make a nandroid of your old rom.

haha yeah I have been mostly loyal to CM... ive also been on touchwiz, AOKP and some other random roms for some of my older phones but when CM 10.1 came out i just switched everything over (DROID, D2G, RAZR MAXX, XOOM, TF700)
but this is sounding pretty easy to me! i am very familiar with nandroid backups as i have a passion for messing with things i shouldnt mess with on my devices
random question: are kernels flashed when roms are flashed? so like does each different rom have its own kernel? (obviously some would use similar/same kernels)
another random question: I have a growing collection of old androids laying around and am not sure what to do with them? do you/anyone have any good uses/ideas to share? im sure i could look thru each devices subsection but as just a general thing. i obviously could use them for "ipods" but i have unlimited data still :good: and no battery life troubles, so streaming works great for me.
- i use my xoom as a kind of party device, with a locked down "user profile" to let people pick the music at parties (im in college at ole miss) or decide what to show on the tv etc so that has a little purpose but was wondering about other things.
-my OG droid mostly just sits in my drawer except for every once in awhile i give rooting it another shot (had same problem with xoom until i SBFed it so i think thats the solution) but it has an extended battery and runs well. same thing goes for my beloved D2G (when it isnt off as a temp phone with someone from my family of various friends)
any ideas??
and once again THANK YOU to everyone for the amazing/ super speedy help, im being sure to "thank" each and every one of you.

currently installing now.... WOWED by the install process. unlike anything ive seen on android thus far. i have very high hopes that this will fix my problem of lag as my best guess was that it was caused by the I/O scheduling and this "fixes" that weak point.

AWESOME! its finally working how it should be!
super fast and clean. not a lot of customizing from what i see though :/
and its working fast for now even with the same I/O setup as before (interactive/cfq) but are there more performance options buried somewhere i just am not seeing?? or is that perhaps relating to a specific kernel i should have chosen? if thats the case, would you recommend the best kernel for me?? thanks so much for the help once again

Yeah, the Aroma installer is slick
Cromi-X is based on the stock rom and supposed to have a "stock only much better' feel. So no, not that many options for customizing. I love pjc21's color mod - wouldn't live without it.
CM is about customizing, this one is about stability...
The kernel installer makes it easy to switch and try kernels (no wipes necessary).
I go for _that's v4 kernel because I crave and look for stability.
The two other most popular kernels for this tab are Max's and Hund's.
Max's runs great but supports only FAT32 formatted external cards. So you have to have movies (large files) on your internal.
Hund's probably has the most tweaking and OC options and seems to be loved by gamers. Just tends to run pretty hot.
I would recommend you browse the relevant threads in the development section to get an idea about them.
Your idea about exchanging ideas on how to make old Android devices useful is a great one and would warrant it's own thread. Would be kinda off-topic here and tough to find for anybody else.
Don't know where the best section would be on XDA, but I would love to brainstorm on that topic.
I'm using my old Droid 1 as a navigation device/music player in my car. On longer trips I use my current phone to create a hotspot and stream radio and provide internet connectivity for it. But the D1 lives in the car (and is old enough not to attract thieves - I hope).
My old Droid 4 lives in it's dock on the kitchen counter, is connected to Bluetooth speakers and functions as internet radio/music/picture streaming device/shopping list taker (in Evernote and synced to my other devices) and a quick "check something on the web" go-to.

It looks like that you like it so far with what you have. About the kernel, it would be depended what do you want to do with it or what do you want to use it for.. About the performance, you still can optimize them a little bit more to what you want to use it for most of the time.

Wow! thank you so much for all the help. im really liking the performance/stability. much more important than pretty colors haha. if this kernel (_that's v4) doesnt ever seem slow to me then it has my vote!.
you're absolutely right about this not being the right place to ask about alternate android uses... i will start a thread in the general android section? kind of confusing on where to put it...
those are great ideas though! thanks for the knowledge. ill look into mounting my D1 in my car somehow in a way to provide power to it constantly without looking ugly haha. although i assume ill just give up and use my razr maxx as there is no downside of losing battery life pains.. i wish i could just set these devices up somewhere and be able to control them from another device/location.. getting docks for phones with such small screens seems pointless especially when the key feature (having a slide out keyboard on the D1 and D2G) would require being taken off the dock anyways.
thanks again

regarding the kernel... i have no idea why the device is now running like butter being on the same settings as it was before the change in roms. i know roms change...well... everything.. but i thought pure performance was heavily related to the schedulers and other related settings having to do with the components.
what do you mean regarding the performance? is there a built in tweaking menu? or are you referring to the usual array of tweaking "apps" such as memory optimizing, seeder, set cpu..etc.?
thanks!

The reason it's running like butter is that sbdags & co optimized all the settings, schedulers etc with this hardware the Asus engineers missed.
Seeder causes issues with this rom, don't use it. And seriously - I doubt there is much left to improve on it.
Feel free to try - but I would make sure you have a nandroid if things go haywire. I think CROMi-X with your choice of kernel is as good as it gets on the TF700.

If you read the post explaining by berndblb, Cromi x is already tweaked. Sbdags is very good in updating his rom with new tweaks to make the rom runnig as smooth as posible.. However, you still can optimize them the ways that you like.. Let me trying to answer your questions. For the performance, there is still room for you to get more out of it by optimize those tweaks from the rom and kernel. Second, I don't think there is a tweaking menu during installing except for the Fsync option. I personally like to disable the Fsync because it improves the speed a lot. Third, I don't like using tweaking apps as all. Sometime, they do more harm than good. If you really want to mess around with your device, you have to get dirty to dive deep in your system and play with it. With the custom rom and kernel, they have created a certain folders that you can modify the values that you like. However, you must back up your device before messing arounnd with your system. I have so many bootloops when I apply wrong tweaks but you can restore your back up and back running again without any problem. However, if you know the new tweaks that others are using without problems, then normally you are safe to use them. I hope that helps clear a few things for you..
