Painless root is out by UnrEVOked - Desire Android Development

This might be the answer to the prayers of people who can't root, or are scared by all the other methods!

Common Problems & Questions
*
Does unrevoked3 give me root?
Yes. It previously did not; as of version 3.0, it does.
*
What does this do, then?
unrevoked3 will replace the stock Android recovery with a custom one, which adds many features including “nandroid” backups, the ability to use custom ROMs, and a greater amount of flexibility and customization of your Android phone.
*
Does this permanently unlock the NAND flash on my phone?
No. The tool only unlocks the NAND flash sufficiently long to flash the custom recovery, ClockworkMod. Because of the mechanism that unrevoked2 uses, it is infeasible to leave it unlocked for longer. For this reason, the tool functions as a single unit–if any one part of it doesn't work, the NAND flash may not even be unlocked! After the reflash tool finishes running, the phone's hardware automatically relocks NAND flash.
*
How do I use a custom recovery image instead of the packaged ClockworkMod?
You will need to choose a .img file, which is a binary file suitable for flashing. A .zip file will not work and may render your recovery partition inaccessible until you run unrevoked2 with an appropriate image.
*
Are any drivers required?
On Linux and OS X, the program is self-contained. For Windows users, please install the HBOOT drivers contained in the package before use.
*
I'm running Linux and it won't detect my device!
Either run the program with root permissions, or add appropriate udev rules to the file /etc/rules.d/51-android.rules. Instructions are available at the Android Developers website.
*
The program hangs when “waiting for the system to settle.”
Uninstall any programs that may connect to the phone over USB and automatically sync. Specifically, we have had interference from HTC Sync and Doubletwist in the past; other programs may also cause trouble.
*
Will you release the source code?
At this time, we are not disclosing the vulnerability we have exploited to unlock the NAND flash.
*
That doesn't seem fair! Android is about open source.
In some senses, we agree; but at times, a tradeoff needs to be made. Releasing the source code for this, we believe, would compromise the greater ability to unlock devices like these in the future. Given the choice between sacrificing the liberty of running code on our handsets and the liberty of reading the code by which we unlock it, we feel that the millions of handsets are more important. It is unfortunate that we must make such a choice, and we look forward to the day in the future that no such decision need be made.
*
I found this software useful, and I would like to donate to the team!
Thank you for your support. At this time, the team behind unrevoked3 does not accept donations; but we highly encourage our users to donate to the Electronic Frontier Foundation. The EFF performs the important role of standing up for our digital liberties, including the liberties to reverse-engineer devices that we own. If you are able, please consider making a contribution to them so that they can continue to perform this valuable service.

how long does the "pushing recovery image" take?

This is the first time I've really been tempted to root my Desire. I don't have a gold card though and admit I'm a noob as far as Android and rooting is concerned, so I'll hold off until the earlier queries are answered I guess.

Ok please bear with me, i am new to android but not with flashing.
1.I will be using unrevoked, to root my desire, is this any different to rooting of xda.
2. And after rooting my device with unrevoked, will i be able to flash roms made in xda??
3.If i stuck at any procedure of rooting through unrevoked, how will i recover??
Thanks in advance

So how do we use this?, and what exactly does it do?? a guide for noobs like me would be usefull
Thanks

Just used it to flash a recovery, worked sweet. I too would like to know use it for root out of curiosity. Just a quick side note, the mac app icon still shows evo2

I am already rooted so this is just idle curiosity but does this work with the newer 1.22 and 1.23 ROMs which seem to be unrootable by conventional means?

No, this method we hope will remain underwraps for many more htc devices. But rest assured we will happily explore and implement it on as many devices as we can.

Get the original Unrevoked and then get titanium backup, then backup. Then do this unrevoked recovery flash.
worked flawlessly on my mac first time. ran nandroid. installed custom rom. love it.
ive noticed a custom rom or two requires full nand unlock.. even after boot. would this method allow for use of that kind of rom.. or would we need to do the original full root method(part 1 + 2)? ex...forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=700448
if original root mthod is indeed required for customs roms such as the above mentioned.. could we just pick up at original root method part two? or would we have to still start form the beginning? i personally dont care about being able to have full R/W access while in android.. but if im going to miss out on some roms i might consider doing the "full root" method.
id prefer not to tho.. as i LOVE everything unrevoked is doing. thanks for all the hard work.
worked like a charm
stock evo + unrevoked root + unrevoked recovery + custom rom of your choice .... hell yeah doesn't get any easier
Works amazing! Great work guys!
does this give you FULL root or just the ability to load custom roms?

appears just the ability to load custom ROMs. don't think this gives write access to /system.
in order to manipulate files for /system, requires their root method with their special shadow directory and mount bind command method.
If its not full root then what's the point? It seems to me that it just makes things more confusing because users think they are rooted when in fact they are not..

depends how you define full root.
the user has full root (superuser access) to the whole phone, but does not have write access to /system due to NAND protection.
the release in this thread, they've used some kind of exploit/method to bypass NAND protection temporarily to allow write access to the /recovery partition.
Funny though, about three weeks ago, i used the unrevoked to kick off rooting the wifes phone while i was driving down the road, I used it to get what i needed to flash to finish up with toasts method. LOL...
I'm running the Fresh v0.3 which says you need nand unlocked.
I'm new to Android but if I can flash these custom roms I think that's good enough

this is pretty cool, gonna have to look into this!
i didnt think the two toast root steps were hard to begin with. Especially for all the benefits. But good job unrevoked team for the contribution, for those that cannot or choose not to r00t the other way. Choices are what this place is all about

unrEVOked 3.0

I haven't seen a thread about this, and it looks like this method is fairly fresh. I figured I'd give it a try...and it doesn't seem to work.
It gets hung up on the "flashing recovery image" part.
**Edit**
You have to remove HTC Sync AND the drivers that come with it. When I first tried this, I just installed the USB drivers that unrEVOked came. Looks like you have to totally removed anything from HTC before this can work.
And yes, it does work.
Same thing happens to me.
I have the latest software from Sprint. I don't know if this not working has anything to do with me trying to run unrevoked2 previously.
Not sure...I would uninstall any software from Sprint and HTC before you run this.
That may help.
Great job unrEVOked team. I waited to root my phone again until you guys figured it out again.
What does it do...?
can somebody give a detailed step by step on how to use this unrevoked 3?
and will it leave us having the new 1.47 radio and wifi update?
I asked this on another forum... but why not here?
Does this unrevoked do a full root, where it wipes all your data?
After seeing their one patch potentially ruin people's 4G for good, I've decided not to try their methods anymore. Hopefully 3.0 helps some people.
I like the Simple Root method and Whitslack's method.
So it seems like it doesn't wipe your data... anyone tried this and can confirm?
it doesn't wipe your data i just rooted mine in 3 minutes

I just want to clarify that unrEVOked is not responsible for that. There was a problem with the OTA update itself that broke 4G for some people, which HTC is and was responsible for. The only thing unrEVOked did was distribute said OTA update in pre-rooted form.
So after you run this, will it be possible to unlock nand protection to achieve a full root?
Ah ok uninstalling HTC Sync and its driver did the trick. I'm now rooted for the first time! w00t!
android-wifi-tether works great too!

That's 100% not true. The borking of the 4g was due to the way that the unrEVOked method wrote the wimax image to the wimax partition. This wasn't unique to the unrEVOked method, but it was something that should likely have been tested before release.

I believe it does. My software version didn't change afterwards.
To be frank, I'm not really sure how exactly this works. I know it changes your recovery, but other than that...I have no clue.
Still, it's a way of a achieving root that I'm fairly confident most users can pull off.
Remember: YOU MUST REMOVE HTC SYNC, AND ANY HTC/SPRINT DRIVERS
Otherwise...it gets hung up during the process.
Yeah whoops...
Make sure you uninstall HTC Sync AND HTC Drivers... if you have Windows 7, just search, from the launcher thing, "htc un--" and it'll fill in the rest.
Edit: Trying it for the second time, it gets stuck at "Waiting for device..." and it's connected.
Edit 2: DON'T uninstall the extra htc drivers... I don't know, but it's not recognizing my phone now, zzz.
So I'm confused a little bit. With unrevoked 3 you can flash a recovery image and flash a custom ROM now?

On their site they say: unrevoked3 will replace the stock Android recovery with a custom one, which adds many features including “nandroid” backups, the ability to use custom ROMs, and a greater amount of flexibility and customization of your Android phone.
So I'm guessing I could finally try out some of those ROM's I seeing floating around here. All I'm really after is a fully functional version of Froyo for the Evo, but I'm not sure if that's out yet...

[ROOT] unrEVOked 3.21: one-click root for Froyo, no downgrading

Hey all,
We've been working pretty hard to bring you unrEVOked 3.2 with out-of-the-box, one-click support for all Android versions on EVO. No system downgrading or /data wiping, one-click root, a full NAND unlock and no PRI downgrade.
Available for Linux, Mac, and Windows:
http://www.unrevoked.com/recovery/
Please start by visiting the help page and reading it through:
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/unrevoked3
1. Windows users MUST install the HBOOT drivers for this to work:
http://www.unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php?id=public:windows_hboot_driver_install
2. Windows users need to uninstall HTC Sync or any other program that might talk to the phone over USB (doubletwist, etc). Disabling HTC Sync from the system tray is not enough. They interfere with the root process and will cause problems.
3. When asked for USB connection type, select "Charge Only" and "Remember this".
Special thanks to Sebastian Krahmer for the rageagainstthecage exploit.
oh wow. Good stuff.
That is awesome news. You guys are doing a great job!

This tool works on Windows, Mac and Linux for all released versions of the EVO Android system. When you run it, it permanently unlocks NAND and turns off security, installs clockworkmod (or another recovery of your choice) and installs the su/superuser.apk tools.
It requires no additional ROM downloads, doesn't wipe your data (like the current method that uses unrevoked forever + unrevoked 3.1 to downgrade) and keeps your PRI at 1.40
Bonus: it's one-click.
One Click is what I like to hear. Less chances for me to screw something up

Typo.. I meant 1.40. Sorry, busy with testing right now and mistyped.
i would've volunteered but i just did the whole downgrading upgrading method two hours ago! frustrating is all i can say but i'm done. now i just have to find a ROM.
I have an incredible myself and can't wait for this method to be official. but i've come across a different project. my buddy saw my customized incredible and wants me to root his EVO. he wants it more for the wifi tethering. but he currently uppdated to 2.2. i know there are several methods to root after the 2.2 update but my question is: how do we remove root just in case he needs to take the phone to sprint for service? thats the only reason thats holding me back from rooting his phone. i want to be able to have everything lined up for him in case a situation comes up and needs to return the phone. if there is a root and unroot process for 2.2 then i wouldn't mind testing. any input is greatly appreciated.

Just completed root/s-off on a white evo 4g with stock 2.2 from the store today. Took five minutes. Thanks for all the hard work!
I'm trying to root today, and didn't know this was available to try... I'm a total noob at this, FYI.
Gonna ask here, seeing as I think it might be the best place... will this allow for the current framerate cap to be removed? That's kind of my entire purpose for looking at rooting my phone, I find everything else is 100% fine for my needs and uses.
I'm always seeing problems that people have after rooting... like losing the WiMax radio, GPS crashing their phone, things missing, this and that not working...
I just don't feel that framerate cap to be THAT big of a deal for me to go and sacrifice two or three things I use regularly over that one slightly minor thing...

The act of rooting doesn't take away those features. It's the ROM that you flash that affects how the phone operates. I do believe there a couple ROMs available, that you can find in the Dev section, that fix the fps. I personally love CM6 with the Snap 7.5 kernel.

newb: after root then what

Hi,
So I think this thread is pretty common to most other phones, but I couldn't really find a stickied one or anything of the sorts? After using the search function to the best of my ability, I would like to begin a thread on what's most important after rooting.
From what I understand, Supersu and BusyBox are a must (taken from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1709296&highlight=no+such+file+or+directory)
Then, I went to remove the animation and music from startup (taken from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1645818&highlight=
remove+startup&page=2)
Last, I attempted this but I don't know if it actually works. This one-click tether tool has me guessing at its methodologies, but it seems to be working at the moment so I am happy? Haven't actually tested it, but here is link I used: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1677261
Debranding seems like a great idea! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1634171 (edit1)
Unlocking bootloader, taken from the huge index of guides, but specifically this one. (edit2)
Getting TWRP, from their website: I used the automated one because I tried downloading and launching with no luck. Backing up currently, very easy through Goo Manager; all I did was click "boot to recovery" or whatever from the main page of the app. (edit3)
Here is how to disable software update/upgrade and generally protect yourself from AT&T updating your phone (don't know how to describe it) (edit4)
I humbly submit all the knowledge I have of my phone to the rest of the users. My technical experience is limited, am scared of recommended bootloader unlocks, but am willing to help bundle for newbies like me.
And thank you devs and mods for making this all come together!
(edit1) Because I was looking in the wrong section, I found this thread about the post I made later. Hopefully someone can learn from my mistake? For mod, should this be placed into Q&A at this point? Thanks!
(edit2) Having lots of fun just exploring what other people have recommended me do. So far, got root access and unlocked bootloader, am in the process of getting the "flash recovery" or something to that extent? Unsure of how much more research I should do before continuing to dive in! Thanks for all the input, will keep updating if only to provide log for myself, hoping that some users will find this helpful still
(edit3) Found time to play with TWRP! Really want to get the Sense 4.1 stuff, but scared!
(edit4) Forgot to update with the old post I found to work around the system update thing.
(edit5) useful thread I'm reading through for more information on odex/deodex, am about to update again soon so that I can explore roms and the such!

I'm in a little bit of a pickle because I left my phone alone and luckily when I came back, I stopped the system update download at about 50%. So I'm paranoid to turn on any radio function. Would you happen to know if the methods you used above will disable the system update (permanently)?
As soon as I can get off this dilemma, I do want to try to unlock the bootloader, though it is a bit intimidating to realize that I could break my warranty if I fail...
Thanks in advance! Learning lots from this grand adventure with my AT&T HOX
Do a factory reset for now then run setup, after that go to system updates and uncheck, auto update or what ever it says. That will hold you off for now

if your rooted iI would do a factory reset and then use the one click unlock bootloader method to unlock the bootloader. then from the play store download Goo manager and from there flash the twrp recovery and finally flash a custom roms i recommend the nocturnal rom

Can either of you point me to where to figure out all these rom things? To be honest, I just want to ask you guys straight out but I feel that's disrespectful to all the knowledge you have. I'm seeking more information about how the flashing thing works, whether it wipes everything outside of my twrp backup and/or whether they're exclusive to anything to that effect. Specifically, I'm debating between "[ROM][8/3] - Stock Rooted AT&T 2.20.502.7 - Android 4.0.4 - Odex or De-Odex", "[ROM][AT&T][08/18/12][2.29.207.1]Sandstorm_v2.1", and "[ROM][8/17] Stock Rooted 2.29.207.1 - Sense 4.1! o2 German Carrier!"
Any place that you can point me in the right direction would help me (and other readers for this post). Thanks again so much!

XDA is not a help site, and we don't encourage members to create help threads just to get someone else to show you, what you could have looked up yourself. The answers are there, if you put some effort into it. This is the wrong section, btw.

[Q] Keeping root when updating Frodo to GBread

I am moving my question to a new thread here in the hope it will get more attention:
OK, Firstly, when do I need CWM?
Secondly, I have downgraded my Desire Z from Gingerbread to Frodo and obtained root, S-OFF, etc, using gfree. I know I can upgrade back to gingerbread and want to do this but only if I can do it without losing root. I've seen lots of posts saying gingerbread can't be rooted and one or two saying it can, and others that deal with the upgrade but simply don't say if root will be lost. I assume that if I just install the OTA update offered by HTC, that will undo everything I just did in downgrading and getting root. If I understand correctly, having root is mostly a property of the bootloader and its configuration, so is it possible to re-install gingerbread but without overwriting the bootloader so as to keep root? Is RUU relevant to what I am asking? I hope its OK to post this here, as my only other option seemed to be to start a new thread. Thanks, THANKS!
CWM stands for clockwork mod.It is a custom recovery that replaces the standard recovery, and has much more options than the original. The recovery is like between the bootloader and the actual OS.It allows you to install custom ROMs,partition your SD card, and lots of other stuff that can't be done within the OSor the bootloader.I don't know about your phone in particular, but most HTC'S have Gingerbreak, which allows you to root on Gingerbread, even if it is s-on(although needs an unlocked bootloader though).
Keep this thread updated.
CWM & Gingerbreak.

Thanks, I will read up on Gingerbreak and see if it can help with the GB upgrade. My bootloader is unlocked and I have S-OFF, but I only heard about Gingerbreak from you. Is it a tool produced by an xda-developer?
I assume CWM is only for the OS and bootloader and I would still use my Titanium backup for Apps, or can CWM do both? On a completely stock/standard HTC phone can I use CWM first [before doing anything else] to back up the stock HTC ROM that the phone came with? [That would be great if I can!] Is it the best tool for specifically this? Thanks again.
CWM takes a Nandroid backup to your SD card, which is the OS,kernel, apps, data on internal memory, etc. It's better than Titanium backup in this regard, because even if you mess up your phone you can just revert to this backup. It's the best app I know of for this.Only drawback is that it can't operate within the OS,but even then you can use ROM manager which you'll install anyway to boot into it.I think Gingerbreak is developed by a XDA developer, that's where I saw it when I was rooting my Wildfire S.

Thanks again, last night I took 3 hours to search xda-developer and read what I could about Gingerbreak. Here are my conclusions which may or may not be right:
Everything I read was to do with using Gingerbreak to root a phone that already has GB running on it. As I understand it, it works for some phones running gingerbread, but not all phones. I did not read anywhere that any one has used gingerbreak to root GB on an HTC Desire Z.
I would love to hear from anyone who has tried out gingerbreak on a Desire Z. I think someone more knowledgeable than me, who knows how to get themselves out of trouble if gingerbreak doesn't work should try this. For me I think its not wise at my present level of knowledge.
There are many places in xda-developer [some even with a 2012 date] which say that a Desire Z running GB cant be rooted without downgrading to Frodo. Some of these appear to be knowledgeable developers that would have surely considered the gingerbreak oprion. So I submitt that this strongly suggests that gingerbreak doest work in this case. However it would be great to have this confirmed - perhaps from someone who has tried it.
So I return to my original question:
I know I can upgrade my Desire Z back to gingerbread and want to do this but only if I can do it without losing root. I've seen lots of posts saying gingerbread can't be rooted [on a Desire Z and some other phones] and one or two saying it can, and others that deal with the upgrade but simply don't say if root will be lost. Thanks.
1)Most phones running Android 2.3.3 work(my Wildfire S worked running 2.3.5)
2)I think if it doesn't work it will just say 'Exploit failed' or something of the sort,it's highly unlikely that it would mess the phone up,and even if it did,you could just restore the nandroid backup.
3)You haven't read about Gingerbreak on the Desire Z probably because most people don't stay with the stock ROM after they root it.
And even if Gingerbreak fails, you have a s-off bootloader. So there should be loads of other ways to root it,although they may be complicated.I'd say just try your luck, take a nandroid backup if you're scared, and try Gingerbreak. There's an 80+% chance that it will work,as the desire z runs 2.3.3 AFAIK.
A better idea would be to root, s-off, unlock bootloader at whatever (so in your situation froyo), then flash CWM, and finally flash a ROM. There's a 99% chance somebody made a working ICS ROM for the desire z which was a very popular phone

Good point, but I think he wants to upgrade to the stock GB.....otherwise why does he need to root it again,as there are MANY gingerbread custom ROMs,let alone ICS.If he wanted to do that,it would be easy for him as he already has s-off and root now all he would need is CWM and a good ROM.
Keeping root when updating Frodo to GBread or choosing a good rooted ROM
Thanks for all your replies. OK here is where I;m at: I have 2 phones, the Desire Z and the MT4G slide. They were both running stock GB unrooted when I got them. I have downgraded the Desire Z to Frodo to get root and S-OFF having read that was the only way to root it. But I would like something later than Frodo [or GB] as long as I can keep root and it is more functional. I have been searching xda for nearly 4 weeks to see if there are any ROMs with full functionality for these phones. A ROM based on ICS or JB would be great, but in every case that I look into I run into problems. Some have issues with camera or video not working, some with leds or the keyboard back light. One says the audio doesn't work. Other ROMs sound really good but they don't explicitly state they work for either of my phones. As all these things work with GB I don't want to go to ICS/JB if it means I'm loosing functionality. It is only for this reason that I asked about returning to GB for the Desire Z whilst keeping root. Root is essential to me as I have a lot of plans that involve running SSH, Telnet, VNC, etc. There seem to be some great ROMs out there for the MT4G but I am told that my MT4GS is completely different and they wont work on it.
Part of my problem is I don't always understand what I'm reading because of terminology. There are references for example to the Glacier or the Sensation, but I haven't yet worked out whether a MT4GS is the same as Glacier or if Glacier refers only to MT4G, in which case does MT4GS have another nickname? I searched the WIKI for HTC phones, but the MT4GS isn't even listed there.
I'm new to Mob phones and Android, but have been programming and a Linux user for a very long time, which has taught me to be cautious and research well before jumping in. Hence my posts for advice / help here. There's nothing better than finding someone who has done it before who can tell you how successful it was. Appreciate any light you can bring even to just one of these matters. Thanks.
HTC mytouch 4g is glacier. HTC mytouch 4g slide is the doubleshot.

You're right,ICS and JB ROMs aren't too stable, although the cyanogen mod alpha 6 for the doubleshot seems kind of stable, look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1644084
(Take a nandroid backup of gingerbread though,in case you come to a time where you can't take any risks with your phone)
EDIT : CM9 is listed as stable here in the cm download centre http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=&type=stable
And for the desire Z, there seem to be stable cm7 ROMs.Just take a nandroid backup of froyo, you can't go wrong with that.
(P.S.You probably saw these already, but just in case you didn't.)
