Hello, right now I have an iPhone 3GS with the unlimited data plan (yay for old contract!!) and Sunday I'm going to get the Captivate.
Does anyone know if I will be able to keep my unlimited data plan? I'm sure when I swap the SIM car their system will recognize that it's not an iPhone.
My wife have unlimited family data on her Nokia E71. I wonder if I give her the iPhone they could just swap the plans...
You will be able to keep your unlimited data. I'm doing the same thing and I made the point to ask an ATT rep if I can keep my unlimited data. She said all previous unlimited data contracts have the option to keep it when renewing.
PS -- Yay for ditching iPhones for Android! ;D
Thanks for the reply. I saw the BB thread about the same thing and yes, I will be able to keep my unlimited data plan.
P.S.: Ditching the iPhone for the 2nd time: iPhone -> G1 -> iPhone 3GS -> Samsung Captivate (soon!)

I'm thinking of buying the Fuze without a data plan, and then buying a 2G iPhone from a friend and then activating it through iTunes and adding the iPhone data plan. Then just swap back and forth between the phones when I want to. However until I get the iPhone and its data plan, is there a way I can disconnect the data from the Fuze entirely so my bill isn't like $1000?
yes it's easy to remove and or block gprs
How do I do it? Sorry for the nubness but its my first smartphone. Not too familiar with it yet.
Does anyone ever have any problem for using the AT&T iPhone data plan on other phones?
I have been using the HTC Hero for a month and decided to get a data plan, even though I know I can only use EDGE in the US. I wanted to go for AT&T because I have many friends using AT&T (due to iPhone of course) and I got 15% academic discount with AT&T.
So I go for the iPhone plan, and got an iPhone 3GS, which I had planned to sell it right after I got it. I got my iPhone, activate my account and voicemail with it, and then popped the SIM card into my Hero. Googled AT&T's APN (wap.cingular) and everything works fine on the Hero. No 3G as expected, but EDGE speed is actually much better than I thought.
Then it came the problem. Today I received a SMS from AT&T saying that my data usage has exceeded my plan allowance. I logged into my account on the website and noticed that my usage had only been about 30MB. 30MB out of unlimited = excessive usage? So I phoned AT&T, they said they were sorry that there was a system error and I was put onto a "data per use" plan which charges $2.00 per MB. They put me back onto the iPhone data plan and promised to credit the charge back into my account.
I am now wondering, was that really a mistake of their system? Or was it because I had never got onto the internet with the iPhone, and the first time that I got onto the internet with this sim card was with the Hero, that they put me onto the "pay per use" data plan? Will I get booted to the "pay per use" data plan again if I continued to the data on a non-iPhone? Did anyone ever use the AT&T iPhone data plan on another phone, and got your bill screwed up?
On AT&T website, they said that their system can detect people using an iPhone without an iPhone data plan, this is not allowed and that they would put them back onto the iPhone data plan automatically. But they did NOT say that you cannot use the iPhone data plan with other phones. Their "Person PDA" unlimited data plan is the same price as the iPhone one anyway. As far as I know, the only difference between the two is that the iPhone one supports visual voicemail. Why would they prevent people from using the iPhone data plan on other phone then?
I have an HTC Inspire and I have the 2gb plan from AT&T. It seems like every month I go over my data limit when most of the time I either don't have signal or I run my task killer to shut down background data. I live in the country so there's no WiFi that I could ease my usage. I've gotta do something to get unlimited data. I have 2 questions:
1. Will AT&T ever come out with a 4G unlimited data plan? (like maybe after the T-mobile merge)
And 2. Is there any way I can use a loophole to get unlimited data?
2...
Why yes, yes there is.

They can have my unlimited data when they pry it fromy cold, dead hands.

The goofy thing is that my mother and brother have unlimited on their iPhones and barely use it :/

1. I doubt they will ever create an brand new official marketed truly unlimited data plan for new or existing customers.
2. I actually bought the truly unlimited data plan back when it existed like 5 years ago, and have never let go of it since, so I'm happily grandfathered in. When I changed from my last 3G phone and switched to the Inspire 4G, they "upgraded" my unlimited 3G data plan to 4G unlimited data plan, same price. So for $40 I get truly unlimited no data cap 4G data and unlimited texts. Oh except it's more like $35 a month for that after my Premier discount. I'm never changing my plan again. I'm keeping my unlimited data. Unless of course they offer to upgrade my 4G unlimited to 5G unlimited in a few years time
EDIT: Oh and I never have an Iphone at any point, ever, nor claimed/told ATT that I had one. All WinMo all the time until this Inspire, with hassle free unlimited the entire time.
Didn't the loophole close at the end of April? I was gonna try it with an iPhone 2g but they said something about iTunes agreement changing to close it up or something like that
Can anybody confirm that trick still working?

1. There is/was... you had to be grandfathered in on an unlimited 3G plan to get unlimited 4G data which basically is nothing special. just uses the same "phone" apn that the iphone data plan uses instead of wap.cingular. The 4G unlimited data plan code is: HSDPPB but good luck getting it added if you don't have unlimited data already.
2. there is the itunes/iphone 2g trick which does work for some people if you start with a new fresh itunes account. i hear if the phone isnt kept active for a month or two they can go and change it manually to a 2gb plan if you switch to a different phone immediately... could be wrong but this is what i have heard.
Can you not set up a wifi router in your home to ease your usage load some?

If you had an Unlimited 2g plan, then you can go to a 3 or 4g smartphone and keep your unlimited data plan with no drama at all....well until August 31st when 2g customers get cancelled.
If you didnt have a 2G unlimited smartphone plan, youre screwed. Buy a router.

I dont know if any info is available on the net.
It may only apply to people who were signed up before the Cingular buyout.

That's another problem, I have dial up at the house so I can't use a wireless router to ease the usage. I'm pretty well s.o.l. on that part
Get your hands on a 1st gen iPhail, hard reset it, put your sim in, sync to iTunes, purchase $20 unlimited data package, wait till your acct show that as your device and plan, go to att store and tell them you'd like to have your unlimited data grandfathered to your Inspire, they'll change it while you wait(about a 5minute process), leave store smiling.
Enjoy unlimited data.
This is what I did and now no more worries of going over. In fact, I was consuming 4-5 gigs a month prior but most was on wifi wherever it was available.
I have unlimited data right now.
I am getting my son a phone here soon. I don't want to get him a smart phone because of the extra data plan. So I am wondering what is the best non-smart phone with AT&T.
You don't have to get the data plan if you buy a smartphone

My wife and I both have inspires. So we have an unlimited data plan. But the att reps that we talked to said, we can add an extra line with a non-smart phone for 9.99. If we add a smart phone than we have to add an extra data plan onto it for 9.99 and 25.00. I talked to 2 different reps in the store and 2 different reps on the phone. They all said the same thing.
Then they are lying to you. Data plans are optional for any phone. And i am sure your son would be much much happier with a smartphone.
Dude. Smartphone are better and data is optional. These reps are just playing you

He currently has my old iphone and they keep turning the data on. They said there is nothing they can do about it. They take the plan off and I verify that it is off from my online statement, but when the techs do a "sweep" they see that it is an iphone and a data plan is automatically added. Been going on for about 3 months now.
Any other ideas? Anyone have similar experience?

This is way late but may be good for others so I'll add anyway.
I had an iPhone 3g that I bought from a friend, I had the phone for 1 & 1/2 years before it broke and never had data added. The trick is to turn ALL data (edge, 2g/3g) OFF and keep it off and use only WIFI.
Unfortunately the same trick didn't work as well for my Captivate (Bought from same friend), I only made it a month or so (even with data disabled) and I'm now having to get a non-Smartphone to avoid data plans I can't afford. Guess I have the Android equivalent of an iPod Touch now.
Hello Just a quick question or two. Right now I have an Iphone 4 and am eligible for an upgrade. I decided on the Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket. However do any of you know if an iPhone data plan will work with a non-iphone smartphone? I'm really trying to keep my iphone plan for the sake of being able to switch my microsim between the iphone and the Samsung (If all works out I want to keep my microsim instead of a new one. I'll just use an adapter with the Samsung)
I've read that a non-iphone smartphone can work under an iphone data plan but an iphone can't work under a regular smartphone plan. Which is why I'm trying hard to keep the plan I have now. I just want to know if that is fact or false.
Any information will be really helpful. I asked this on the at&t forum but haven't gotten any replies. I hope you guys can help Please and thank you
EDIT: sorry. I meant to post this in the Q&A forum. Is it okay to post this here?

You can keep your plan, As i just upgraded from an Iphone 4 myself, however you will not be able to switch sims as easily, You must get a new sim for the LTE service from ATT for the skyrocket. I kept my same plan with unlimited data now provisioned for LTE and whatnot is all.
So your plan will have to be adapted, You can get a cookie cutter for your sim and then it should work in an iphone never tried it though....and the adapter would have to go in the skyrocket.
Hope this helps, PS don't let them change your plan they will ask you too but say no.
the quick answer is no, although you will be able to retain the "unlimited" status of the plan, they are two different codes on your account. so you can use the phone and text but no data or pic/vid messages unless you change the data plan.
Thanks for the info

Thanks for answering. How happy are you with the Skyrocket now that you've upgraded from the iPhone?
I came from iPhone as well. My grandfathered iPhone $30 unlimited plan carried over to my skyrocket. Still had to get a new Sim card though. Make sure they keep your grandfathered plan, I heard some people got ripped off on theirs. You can keep it so make sure you specify that.
I kept my unlimited and it's damn fast

I have the $30 unlimited plan too. So your data plan name is still under iPhone or under Smartphone Unlimited Data plan? Just making sure I'm understanding right.

This is what my bill says now:
Unlim data for 4G LTE Smartphones w/Visual Voice Mail 02/12-03/11 30.00
But it was previously the Iphone unlimited data plan.
Also important to mention that I'd you have unlimited you will now be throttled at 5 gbs instead of 3 like iPhone users

When I upgraded from my iPhone 3GS to the Skyrocket the guy at the store asked me if I wanted to switch from my unlimited data plan. I told him no, I'd rather take the throttle than the overage charges any day. Now my bill shows this feature instead of the iPhone data plan: LTE UNL SMT VVMT. I was also surprised that I wasn't asked to verify my employment status with Wal Mart, I haven't worked there in 4 years, but i still get the 20% discount off my bill every month.
