Hello everyone,
does anyone know a list of available RAM present in various Android Phones (and ROMs)? Using the Market App "Free Memory" it says the amount available to Linux and sometimes knowing how much is there before buying a phone can avoid terrible surprises...
For instance, my 288 MB Hero has only 5 MB more of usable (a total of 195.840 KB) RAM than a 256 MB Acer Liquid S100... I chose the Hero at the time because of price, RAM and development by XDA but now I discovered that the RAM advantage is pratically nothing...
If no one knows about such a list I'd start (or suggest someone to do it, but I'd enjoy doing that) it as I think it is something very useful to know before purchasing Android phones. I "heard" that the Droid/Milestone has very little reserved memory and that 2.1 Nexus only has about 200 MB but Froyo maybe fixes that...
What do you think about making this list (if it doesn't exist.. I couldn't find it ^_^)?

Acer:
- Liquid S100 [1.6?] RAM = 256 MiB | Linux = 147 MiB (+-) | Reserved = 109 MiB

Hi there,
The reason the amount of RAM is different in every phone is due to the fact that each manufacturer has different default Apps and launchers that start up when you boot the phone. HTC has the very slick but also very heavy Sense UI sat atop android. If you're developing specifically for Sense then I'm afraid you're going to have to deal with it, though this is unlikely unless you're designing widgets for Sense.
There are several different ways to reduce RAM usage on the Hero:
a) download a task manager (applicable to b) and c) too)
A task manager will let you kill off unnecessary apps running in the background and allow you to test heavy apps if needs be, it will also keep your device snappy and quick on a day-to-day basis.
b) download a new launcher
Try searching the Market for another Launcher such as Launcherpro (Beta), this and other launchers are generally less taxing on the Hero's memory and can provide you with much needed working memory.
c) flash to a modded rom
There are several modified roms available for Android devices, the hero included, that provide performance tweaks and also lower memory usage. Two that I would suggest are the modaco rom at hero.modaco.com and the superhero rom at villainrom.co.uk .
The 3.2 modaco rom keeps HTC sense, however it uses a teknologist kernel that compresses and effectively increases available memory. This does tax the CPU slightly but I have used that particular rom for about 4 months and have found it to be really stable, except for the fact it's running 1.5 rather than 2.1 . Modaco also make a 2.1 rom that's still in beta, and is marked as r5 on the forum. This rom unfortunately does not include the memory compression, however.
The superhero ROM is an extremely light, extremely slick implementation that uses just the most basic applications and launchers, plus a few HTC applications, to give you the most available RAM and least CPU usage at idle.
Have a look through these options, and browse the XDA and Modaco forums to get a better idea of how to get the best out of your device
Woops
Actually misinterprated your post there, sorry
I guess you mean the fact that only 191.1 or thereabouts is available to Linux rather than the full 288mb quoted in the specs. I'm still not quite sure why that is myself

I do know why, but I think it would be interesting to have a list of how much each model has reserved for radio and other internal functions.
I'm trying to fill the table using google, anyone willing to contribute?
I just updated the Nexus' stats after buying it. Hella fast!
