tried the mhl adapter and...

uhg. the videoplayer in media hub doesnt support mhl. it seems intentional because it wont even mirror the phone screen, it actually shows it mirrored for a second and displays a mesage that it is not supported.
kinda makes media hub not worth having. why wouldnt samsung just put drm protection on a filetype that plays in the normal video player? this is lame. why would i rent a move to watch on my phone with no possibility of playback on a tv? they'd get many more rentals if it was more flexible this seems more like a way to show off than a practical aplication. i dont think it can stream over dlna either. it would be much more useful if i could use it on a hotel tv when i travel or my home tv with a dock.
come on samsung. we need an update! asap!

Yep, I tried it yesterday as well and it didnt work. Thats very dissapointing. Who wants to buy a movie in media hub but only be able to watch on their phone? If you buy the movie you should be able to watch it wherever you wish....

I really hope someone makes a hack for HDMI mirroring like the Droid x has...

I used with slingplayer. It worked ok, I think it doesn't have the horsepower to get it really smooth. But it was ok. Are the media player files drmed? I'll only use it to spend that $25 credit. I'll probably just copy and rip the movies I buy. Did anybody try other media players/movies?

ya know that's probably it. they are drm'd and in a proprietary format. they probably fear that if you had video capture on a computer you'd get around all that and dont want people ripping their movies.
the on board video player works amazing. dont use 3rd party apps, it supports mkv's and such. plus it putsout 1080p when used with mhl, the screen turns off and it switches to a highres mode and powers the mhl exclusively.
a better solution would have been watermarking the output. so that movies if ripped would have evidence of piracy in which case the user could be reported if they distribute it.
i wonder it that's what the update is about. maybe if we spoof the build.prop it wont force the update and then who knows? that might kill it altogether though and other version might only mirror, not use hi res. maybe there is a way to squash the update, an apk that can be frozen or something?

[Q] ATT Live TV with Infuse HD Adapter - No HDMI

Until recently I was able to output HDMI from my Infuse to my small HD TV. With the latest update to the ATT Live TV bloatware, the ATT Live TV application will not run once an external HDMI cable is attached. I'm greeted with the new message "This application does not support HDMI output. Please unplug the cable" Mobi (the developer) confirmed this is a new "feature"
Thank you ATT. Anyone have any ideas for a workaround? I tried uninstalling updates, but the app just updated itself.

Disable automatic updates from the market page for the app, wipe all app data, disable cell data, turn off wifi, uninstall updates, then see if the app still works, then turn data back on. We really need someone to come up with a true mirroring kernel and still somehow support full hd from the video player. Like if we force 1080p res on,the whole ui and mirror that, let the screen,controller down,convert what it needs to. This no hdmi on,custom kernels stuff and apps having say over it's use is ridiculous. I wish there was an,easy way to fix it but the best devs haven't even gotten it working for gb. F-you Samsung!

Thanks, already tried that. When the Live TV bloatware app calls home to ATT, the program automatically updates to the latest version -- no joy. A low-res video out would be OK with me -- better than nothing.
Sucks - sell HD than cripple phone to kill it. This is only going to get worse since the T-Moble deal was killed -- more pressure on controlling limited bandwidth.

i never used that app anyway. but alot of this stuff has to do with studios and licences, since it is classified as a mobile device there is a different licence for the videos and the studios want to prevent piracy so they put pressure on those that buy the license. it sux but samsung cant use hdmi on there own all share app. if they had the license for non mobile you could output to a tv but not on the phone. its all legal garbage and we let them get away with it. the lod days of plugging in your vcr and recording anything you want are over, what the studios dont realize is they only give people more incentive to pirate by making it harder to share it legitamately amoungst your own devices. it just becomes easier to obtain it from an illegitamate source for free!
if my isp wasnt so ****ty id have a media server transcoding from a tv tuner card and streaming over the internet so that i could access it from anything with an html5 browser (like a slingbox but better). the only reason i dont is cuz i dont have the upload bandwidth.

I ended up with the note after replacing my tf101 with the tf300 and tested the note and loved it in every way.
I'm not really even missing the keyboard dock and finding many ways to use the spen on a regular basis.
What I'd love though is to basically use the note as a digital whiteboard for teaching. Essentially to be able to write in smote or quill while sending the screen display over wifi to the PC connected to the projector system. Is there any way to do this? To do a live screencast from the note to a PC?

Have had zero luck even getting it to connect. PC install didn't work at work, tried at home and apparently needed to let it restart and then install all over. Still cannot connect the device though, device always scans when I turn on AllShare cat in network and Allshare on the PC recognizes an "intel" device. Thought for sure the Note would appear there.
Any tips on how to use it?
Does it actually do this? I gave up on it because what I see on Samsung's website only talks about sharing music/video and I didn't see any mention of streaming the tablet display to the PC. (Except the idea that you could watch a game on the PC, but see nothing about this in the app itself.)

Were you able to figure this out? I'm a teacher as well and do things with my HP tablet, but really want to with many Note.

You can execute AllShare through Samsung Kies, as well.
My suggestion would be to try and look at Remotes. You may be able to find drawing input ones. I use Unified Remote for using my phone/tablet as an input device. Although, the free version is limited to about 13 remotes or so. With the pro version you get it up in it's 50's. I'm not sure if this has what you're looking for but you can make your own custom remotes.
Or, alternatively, you can use a Remote Desktop client. Some of these may adjust your screen resolution on the PC so it fits well in the Note 10, but you can easily change it back. But it'll effect the view on the tablet. For this, I use Splashtop 2 HD.

What is Samsung Kies and what is Remotes?
I've done some investigating and I think the only way that AllShare works to screencast to another device is to send it to an AllShare Play device. Unfortunately I don't think (but really hope I'm wrong) the PC software works this way.
I'm curious, has anyone tried the VNC Server for Android and tried connecting in a view mode on a PC?

This is the setup I use and would suggest to everone in need to present from Galaxy Note 10.1:
buy Allshare Cast dongle , search for it on Amazon
buy HDMI to VGA adapter
connect HDMI to VGA adapter to projector and Allshare to A/C
on Note 10.1, Settings/More Settings/AllShareCast, the dongle will be detected something like "Dongle-xxxxx", tap to connect
When connected, start to present, wireless, move in the room, take the S-Pen and highlight the important topics etc.
On that way, no hassles with connection to PC/laptop and then to projector. AND the coolness factor is priceless! Every time I present there is a WOW factor, the downturn is sometimes people are not listening to my presentation but wants to see the technology.
And the Apple fanboys in the meetings around with their iPads - can you imagine several of them told me "nah, that is PROPRIETARY technology" !? LOL! I was very respectful before to other people opinions and personally I am very thankful to the genius work of Steve Jobs but in recent time I simple shoot back very sharp - face it, Apple funboy!

I don not own any Apple product and cannot say anything about it.
Everything what you can see on your Note 10.1 screen you are seeing parallel on the second display. I have tested it with several projectors from Dell, Sony, signal to those devices over their VGA ports and the experience is exactly the same to one with the laptop connected to the projector. The best result is via HDMI port, majority of the business projectors do not have one but monitors and TV have them and the result is gorgeous, beside the screen the audio is transferred too.
The video player is optimized for the AllShare Cast, when playing you can see the video on the second screen and on Note 10.1 you have the control menu.
Polaris office works fine too, same experience, WYSIWYG on both screens. For slides (aka PowerPoint), when connected to AllShare Cast dongle, the slide show button clicked shows the selection of
Primary display
Dual monitor
Controller & Note
but only the Primary display selection switches to presenter mode. Even then, the pen modes is active so you can annotate with S-Pen direct on the slides during the presentation, the killing feature for me.
Small downturn - multiscreen is not working when connected to Allshare Cast dongle, only single screens, but the floating helicopter videos is working and that is impressive for entertaining the people after the work is done :fingers-crossed:.

That sounds amazing. I'd love to see a video of it all in action. Sounds great, especially being able to run a presentation and markup with the pen, but would like to see it before dropping about $100 on the setup.
I've been testing splashtop whiteboard but have had problems getting it to connect. Sometimes it will.... sometimes it won't. Would prefer to just screencast and run everything from the tablet anyway. The presentation mode sounds impressive and ability to swith into Sketchbook or snotes would be great.

First off thank you for your help and input. My school is going to purchase this for me but I have one additional question. We do not have HDMI projectors in our building. I was wondering if an HDMI-VGA adapter would work? It will not provide true 1080P but that is a non-issue for me. I only want to be able to project the S-Note or any note app so my students can take notes on what I am writing. Again thank you for your help.

I use Gold Plated Premium HDMI to VGA Active M/F Adapter in White by Cable Matters (still cannot post links, just search for it on amazon) and it works, tested on several company's Dell and Sony projectors with VGA port.

FYI - I filed a support ticket with Polaris Office about not being able to use the different display modes. This was their response.

Hopefully they have a solution soon. The only thing that would improve this setup is being able to use the Controller & Note presentation mode.

Anyone have an idea what I am doing wrong? .I can project the screen when the dongle is connected with HDMI, but when I connect with an HDMI to VGA converter the Allshate Cast automatically shuts down and the Note restarts.

I found another way to get very good results in mirroring wirelessly from Note to PC: Teamviewer. Download the free app from the play market, and also the free PC client from the Teamviewer website. A tad laggy, but works well for presentations.

I just got the dongle. It works great!
A few comments:
(1) For rooted device (like mine), the app "triangle away" is needed. The dongle works after (but not before) I reset the counting using triangle away. For un-rooted devices (the device is un-rooted if you didn't root it yourself) it shouldn't be an issue.
(2) The dongle works with a hdmi-VGA converter. The one I bought is this:

I am sure lots of other converters should work as well. But there may be two things to note. It would be safer if
(a) "Active" converters should have more chance to work than "passive" converters. There is an IC chip in active converters. The passive ones are just data lines.
(b) Make sure the converter does not need too much power to work. The one I bought is raspberry PI compatible. This typically mean the converter the current it draws from the device is not too large. In some previous post it is mentioned the dongle could reset when connected to VGA converters. I doubt it may because of too much power required by the converter.
(3) I didn't notice any lag or instability issues with 30 minutes of use (I installed a firmware update before usage. The discovery of update and installation is automatic. I just clicked OK).
I didn't (and will not) use it to play games or watch movies anyway. I only want to use it to do presentations via projectors. Games and movies transfers much more data, in which case I haven't tested.
I will update if I got problems using the dongle for a longer time.
(4) The "multi-window app" feature goes away when the dongle is connected. (It re-appears after disconnection.)
UPDATE:
After more test, there do exist a few problems:
(1) If I play a video in full screen (both youtube video online or downloaded videos using MXplayer), the video is only shown on external display. Even worse, when I exit the full screen mode of the video player, the allshare connection typically crashes. I need to go to settings to connect again (no reboot needed though).
On the other hand, for youtube without going to full screen, there is no problem. And when I compare the two displays, there is no lag between them.
(2) In polaris office, only the "primary display" mode works well. In other two modes, the external screen only update partially.
Both of them should be software problems. If I don't do (1) of the above, I never met crash or disconnections. I didn't test the device with games. There is no random disconnection so far (this is most important for me).
The connection is stable within 10 meters, while it breaks at about 30 meters (together with 2 doors blocking the space).
Finally, there is a drop of display quantity if the image is quickly changing, and I watch closely enough. But considering I only need to display static images, this is not a problem. The display quantity of static images is great. Compared with the TeamViewer + computer solution, the dongle uses less resources on the tablet and gives much better image quality. The usage of battery is not heavily affected either. I used in total 7% battery power per hour for light usage of the tablet with dongle connection (and among which the tablet screen still used most of battery as usual).

[Q] Any Miracast pc software options?

I recently picked up a Samsung Galaxy Note 2. It supports Allshare Cast, which is essentially Samsung's version of Miracast, but requires an Allshare Cast dongle. I've reached a point where I'm no longer buying a bunch of expensive accessories for a phone I'll probably have for a year or 2.
I also have an iPad 3. Using a program called Airserver, I can mirror my iPad's display onto my media center PC. I thought I would be able to do with with my Note 2 and the Allshare PC software, but the software doesn't support Allshare Cast (and likely never will, since they seem interested in getting people to buy the proprietary dongle). It only supports Allshare Play, which is DLNA and unsuitable since it requires that the recipient device decode the file and won't allow sending everything on my phone to my PC.
Android 4.2 is supposed to integrate Miracast into the OS natively, so I figured I can use this to mirror my phone's display on my PC. However, I can't find any PC software that acts as a Miracast receiver (much like Airserver works for iPhones/iPads). Does anyone know of any Windows software that will act as a Miracast receiver and allow me to mirror my phone's screen on my PC?

Microsoft does not natively support Miracast in the new released Windows 8 and RT, but Windows software developers can implement Miracast easily, as Wi-Fi Direct is present as of Windows 7[19].

I'm also looking for library/sdk Miracast information but didn't fount anything interesting so far.
I already have multiple devices that can implement this solution : Popcorn Hour, Freebox (French ISP Media player), Raspberry Pi...
There really is no need to buy another device for this, one of these devices must have the ability to implement this very interesting technology.

From what I've gathered, Miracast is merely a certification program (sauce), and not an open standard. The Miracast website itself refers to the possibility of buying the specs, for moneys.
Thus, to develop Miracast thingies legally, you'd have to buy the specs (which, amazingly, costs mere a three-figure sum), submit it to the Wi-Fi Alliance for certification, probably wait a long time, and then you're allowed to publish it. Closed source, most likely.

That's close, but it's not entirely true. Miracast is pretty much a certification program, but it certifies devices for the "Wi-Fi Display" specification, which does cost money to access for non Wi-Fi Alliance members to access. $199.00 to be exact. How unfortunate I don't think that there is any technical reason why Miracast mirroring software cannot exist for Windows, especially Windows 8, which includes a new Win32 API for Wi-Fi Direct.

UPDATE: There are copies of the spec floating around on the internet if you look hard. After a quick look over the 150-ish pages of the spec, I'm still not seeing any reason why this could not be implemented in Windows. It's complex for an amateur dev like myself, but I might take a crack at it.

just of today i saw some news of a piece of hardware called DWD-300 from LG, it's not yet available, but it's a dongle you can connect with hdmi to make older hdmi tvs miracast compatible, it's a wifi direct receiver. maybe you can connect it to the pc as well as far as it has got hdmi video input.
seems they are already selling it in south korea for 110 USD.

I know LG and other companies have hardware dongles to add mirroring to older TV's, but that's not the question/topic of this thread. The idea is to mirror an Android phone on a PC screen. Unless the dongle can be connected to the PC, no dice.
Let me explain the purpose for this setup. I have an Android phone, a W7Prox64 Media Center that records TV, plays Blu-ray, streams movies/music, plays games, and serves the same functioning as an Apple TV's mirroring feature (I can mirror an iPhone or iPad to my Media Center with a program called AirServer; you just turn on mirroring an a window automatically appears and maximizes with the iDevice's screen. Unfortunately, I also have a family that fails to understand how the input button on a TV works. I don't want a dongle to plug in my TV, because then someone would have to change an input and next thing you know, there I am "fixing" the tv (pressing the input button). I'm looking for something like Air Server, but that also mirrors my Android device. Again, no boxes, no dongles, no extra hardware of any kind. I'm tired of buying tech and having to re-buy it when I change my phone. A PC is capable of doing anything a dongle can do, and I'm not out 80 bucks every year.
I swear, if they make an iPhone with a +5-inch screen, I'm defecting. It's 2013 and this is ridiculous.

I agree with you completely. When I do a search for this, I frequently only find the posts that I myself have made over the years. I can't stand Apple, but no one seems to be able to tell me what separates an iPhone from everything else, and why it can't be done on anything else. Even it's a "Apple will sue you" issue, you'd think that someone in the android community would tell em to get bent, and make it happen anyway. Several apps claim to do this, but none work as flawlessly as Airplay with Airserver or Reflections. I'm on the Galaxy S4 now, and the wait for someone like this for Android is getting a bit ridiculous.

Question Newb (to Pixels) question: Is there any way to support multiple external monitors?

I really want to buy a rootable android and Pixels seem to be the way to go. However, I'm reading conflicting info about whether or not I'll be able to use 1-2 external monitors with the Pixel 7 Pro. I hoped this wouldn't be necessary.
I'd really like to replace my laptop with a phone that's capable to using 1-2x external monitors (4k resolution not necessary but would be amazing as well - 1080p would be plenty).

Can someone please confirm this is possible and let me know which dock they're using? Also, is there any chance I could use 2 HDMI outputs through the same dock? Or perhaps one USBC-Displayport-HDMI connection + 1 Chromecast connection to enable 2x monitors?
I'd love to be able to code using a bluetooth keyboard/mouse and skip having the carry my laptop around entirely. I have a 1440p portable/external monitor that works wonderfully for both my laptop and my LG V50 ThinQ.
2x monitors would be my dream; the portable external monitor I have is amazingly light and works great (and supports display over USBC and MicroHDMI - plus power over another USBC port). So I'm sure I'd need to plug in in order to operate these for any extended periods but anyway:

I will say: My LG V50 ThinQ USBC to USBC video works really well on my portable monitor... So it may be possible to patch that feature into a pixel kernel.

I will say "technically"... yes. Practically however, nobody has actually bothered.
Should be just a matter of making sure the kernel is built with support for GUD and setting up a monitor with a GUD interface (such as an rPi with the GUD sdcard).

Pixels do not support native, hardware-accelerated video-out.
Any old dock won't work. Only DisplayLink ones and expect performance to be poor.

Not to mention, streaming like Netflix and Hulu won't show. I tried several DisplayLink adapters which claimed HDCP compliance (including this one:

But I could never get any streaming services to work (just black screen once playing started). The rest was acceptable quality (although I wouldn't expect to be able to play games without significant lag and screen tearing). If you find a set up that also works with streaming, please let me know. I'd be very interested in adopting something similar.
