[XDA INT'L TRAVEL EXCHANGE] Why not visit? Get Google Planning Cal/Twitter: XDAtravel - General Topics

I was PM'ing orb3000 last night -- thanking him for help with a recent posting about the DEVVY AWARDS program -- which had some timing setbacks, but is getting reworked to properly honor the entire collective of developers who made the Windows Mobile platform "sing" over past 6-8 years... and this will be its Swan Song since we all know by October WindowsMobile will cease to exist as an ongoing platform.
I was saying to orb3000 -- "thanks, and I look forward to visiting you in Mexico when I eventually take my 'XDA WORLD TOUR' visiting people in various countries that I've met in the XDA-devs community...
Well... Once of the ways I get myself into trouble is by taking ideas that hit me -- and then looking at them again and saying "Wait a minute.. WHY NOT FOR REAL?"
So this was just a thought: Nothing at all elaborate right now (learned that lesson!)... Why not just set up a GOOGLE CALENDAR called XDAtravel ....
For those who've used Google Calendar there are many great things about it:
• If you have a main Gmail account, and have a main GOOGLE CALENDAR you use for home/personal, or for work, you can just TURN ON, and TURN OFF "Other Calendar" overlays, such as, in this case XDAtravel".
• It's not PUBLIC, it's private and secure, but it's shared by those who have been given READ/WRITE permissions. Those are given by the XDAtravel "Calendar Owner" ... that's me, because I just created a gmail account called [email protected], simply to be able to create that calendar.
• Let's say that orb3000 thinks "yeah, that's good idea, I'd like the ability to just keep OFF most of the time, but every now and then TURN ON the XDAtravel CALENDAR OVERLAY and see WHO, in WHICH CITY is saying
"I AM WILLING TO HOST SOME TRAVELING XDA-DEV MEMBERS VISITING HAMBURG, GERMANY BETWEEN SEPTEMBER 7-15, 2010"
Click to collapse
• Or he could scan further and see "I wonder if anyone in CALIFORNIA, USA is open to having a travel guest in October or November.. If so, I am going to put a TEMPORARY "CLAIM" on those dates and then check with my boss at work to see if I can take some vacation days during that time. I know I have about 10 vacation days I have not used yet."
OR
• orb3000 could say to self, "My family and I have room to host someone here for just a few days, maybe 3 days maximum. That would be kind of nice. I don't have a particular day in mind, but I now that the month of October is a good time, not too busy.... so, I am going to make an ENTRY on the XDAtravel calendar that spans the month of October 2010 that says "MEXICO CITY" (*note, not actual city, just making up for example): "Open to having houseguest for maximum of 3 days. Please contact for details, and block out a section on the calendar when you might want to visit"
• and so on
===================
MORE BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT HOW GOOGLE CALENDAR WORKS:
• Google has improved over the years, so now, to simply SUBSCRIBE to the travel calendar, you do NOT NEED to have a gmail account. But you would need a yahoo, or MSN or hotmail or similar account. Because what enables you to access the PRIVATE SECURE SHARED CALENDAR is via an email invitation link, specific to you. And in order to be able to view or add to the calendar, you would have to first request to the "Calendar Owner" (that's me) permission to access, and the Calendar owner has to go into the Calendar Settings and explicity ADD your email address to the list of those allowed to access the calendar. Once your email address was added, a notification link would be sent to you by email, and you could click through, and then access the calendar.
• At that point, Google Calendar has really made their Interface Controls easy and great, with simple simple color coding of YOUR choice (what color to make this Travel Calendar's events) --- and -- simple simple ONE-CLICK to "TURN ON" a calendar layer (like this one) and one click to turn it off.

THE IDEA ITSELF: Encouraging a way to make it easy to coordinate staying a few days with fellow XDA community members when traveling internationally, given we're practically in every country around the world:
__ Great idea, seems workable, at least at first glance.
__ Great in theory, but I don't think people would really get into it, thus there would likely never be any "listings" to get the ball rolling.
__ Good idea, but not something I would likely ever want to take part in.
__ Good idea, but I don't see myself traveling, so I could never really use it.
__ Good idea, but I don't have the space to host anyone at my home, so I could never offer up my place as a destination someone could visit. ***
(*** My followup question: REALLY? TRULY? Many or most people who travel are used to the "student backpacker" culture where people are traveling as cheaply as possible, and staying in "hostels" or small tiny rooms, often without WC or toilet, or water... In my experience, what people traveling LOVE LOVE LOVE is having someone local who knows the city be able to maybe show them 1 or two things, then tell them other things to do. Travelers do not expect you to entertain them. They do not expect you to personally take off from work and show them around. They do not expect you to spend your money and cook for them. If anything, they want to take YOU to dinner for being nice and giving them a place to stay for a few days. What people love most is visiting with real people from another country -- not phony people from a tour, or some arranged visit to see "authentic Russian people eating authentic Russian food". So.... maybe.. think again )
__ As nice as it sounds, I don't like this kind of thing. I can't explain why.
__ I can explain why. I am here to exchange knowledge about my phone and tinker with software development. While it's interesting that XDA has people from all over the world, it's not why I am here, and I don't really care to meet anyone offline.
__ Bad idea. Full of problems.
__ Other: please comment:
==========================
Thank you!
and even though there's nothing to tweet about -- hah hah -- just in case anyone IS traveling this summer and wants to find fellow XDA people more easily -- well, try subscribing to
http://twitter.com/XDAtravel
I have nothing to say -- it's just there as complimentary infrastructure if the idea were interesting. BUT... if people subscribed, you could find each other there.

I doubt this will work because it is an iframe element, but this is supposed to embed the calendar on a website... But also, since it is PRIVATE, even it it worked, i don't know how or what it would display.
But I just want to see so I am going to insert the EMBED code here and see what happens --- probably gibberish...
<iframe src="http://www.google.com/calendar/embed?src=xdatravel%40gmail.com&ctz=America/Los_Angeles" style="border: 0" width="800" height="600" frameborder="0" scrolling="no"></iframe>

Well since that didn't work, then I'll post a pic of the twit channel as an irrelevant substitute ...

Android Town

Ok, Android Town is now an obsolete name and application on the market. It was renamed to Peeples. Peeples is a seperate app on the market so you would need to download that one. It uses the same DB as Android Town so all your information is saved.
Peeples is a social community application which is location based. It enables users to see other users of the application on the map and strike up a conversation with them. Privacy options are also available.
So far the application has over 11k users.
Peeples has the added options of:
- uploading profile pictures and avatar through the application
- sending files from SD card with messages as attachments (5Mb limit for now)
Try it out and let me know what you think.

Running it on a G1 running CM 4.2.15.1.
Noticed a few things.
1) Registration via App Only (not a big deal, just no indication on the site as such)
2) Registration within the app resulted in "passwords do not match" ANY time I left a password field even when they did match
3) Map reacts slowly when being moved or zoomed in/out
As there's no one yet in my area run ning this, I haven't tested many of the other features. I'll report as I experience more.
Thanks for giving it a try. Hopefully some more US citizens register so you'll be able to interact with them. 5000 kms (around 3100 miles) is the biggest radius so far. Most of the users are in Europe at the moment.
Thanks for the heads up on the registration part. I will definitely try to improve it.
I was also thinking about adding content from social networks if users have any (FB, Twitter, FLickr...). What do you think about that?
And thanks again for testing
Have yet to install the newer release for testing, but looking forward to it.
The concept of linking other social media is a fine idea, provided that there are switches set in place to allow for selected/unselected status. I know plenty of users who would want to publish information for their Facebook, but may want to avoid doing so on other networks.
Either way, yeah, further integration with social media is a fine idea.
ill install and test tmmrw probably
seems pretty cool ill make sure to throw it on my EVO as soon as it freakin comes out
Added to my G1. Will let you know what happens.
Cheers. I sent you a msg in the app as well. Can you test how the send message screen looks on lower resolution please?
Testing it out now , but not many *users* in norway.
I'm the only one
Application is still in its's early days. If you choose a larger radius you will see more users (around 45 accross the world right now)
Application has just been published to the market as well, under the Social category of applications.
How about making a public chat channel that every one is in , when we connect . And late maybe switch it so it will be local / country only.
All depending on how many users this app gets
That's actually a very good idea. I'll be sure to do that as soon as possible...shouldn't be that hard (at least for a single one for starters)
Good nice app!
Already tweeted this. I'll Buzz it as well.
Private Messages look fine on the G1. No issue there.
I'll be comparing my experience to my friend's on the Nexus. Hopefully provide you some better feedback concerning how this works with the G1's older hardware.
Edit: First things we noticed, "Passwords do not match!" error is still present when registering via the app, even if the passwords do match. This issue has been replicated on the G1 and the Nexus 1.
Other noted issues:
Attempt to "Add as friend" on the G1 results in a toast of "Error". No other information contained in error.
Sending a picture on the G1 took about 1 min 45 seconds from time of shot to "Picture sent!" toast showed up.
I'll see what I can do to provide better information (such as screenshots, etc)
Let me know what else you could use.
Just a thought, an option to register via the desktop(internet) as well.
i couldn't figure out how to register until I found it as an option in settings when the app was open.
Doh.
It's lonely in the south of england......
Working on the mentioned bugs as we speak. Will probably release an upgrade today that might fix a few things.
@squirreleater: the internet register option is definitely needed. I agree.
anyone from germany?
feature request: please include option to add user with the username directly so that people from here can invite eachother other than searching on the map
install
Wont install on my Hero ??

Hoping for some suggestions re tables

warning- first post, longish, but even glancing at it is much appreciated!
Hi all,
First post here - hoping I don't ruffle any feathers in asking but I've chosen this community as it has been helpful in the past and often is in the first few google search results when I'm hunting for answers.
I lucked out last year when I was working for the State Parks system (seasonal) as a State Ranger- saw an opportunity to turn paper inspection logs (of water craft launching on state waters) digital. Dusted off the programming skills (hadn't done much since VB6, and even then- my hay day was back with VB3.0) and came up with a working concept.
The state was well receiving of this - but I'm not a programmer by nature- now faced with developing software to be run by hundreds of individuals simultaneously across the state instead of just my working concept. Additionally, the state I reside in is the leader in vessel inspections- many other states are modeling after us and are interested in the software. This means the software will likely end up in the hands of thousands and the database receiving millions of entries per year.
I'm a one man show here and the people that brought me on would prefer keep a separation between myself and IT so that the state's IT folks don't muck the project and, well, ruin the best thing I have going for me. That leaves me with the internet for answers and every waking hour devoted toward not messing this up
The information that is logged contains many things that change frequently, as we're checking the condition of the vessel. Dirt, plants, accumulations of water, etc. all vary. Additionally, the trailers that these vessels arrive on can vary too.
This leaves me with no clue how to structure my tables. I can take baby steps for now as we're in the pilot phases of this deployment (~5 bodies of water max, maybe 50,000 entries this summer)... just need to figure out something that'll work for now.
Currently I have just a single table, no keys defined. I search for information with sql statements, filter by registration number as well as the time since I figure there can never be duplicates for a vessel and a particular time of a certain day. I've looked at the Northwind example and several others but they have a few fields that simply don't change. The boat reg# will not change, we don't collect owners names so that can't remain static... I may set it up with an autoincrement field but that would be the first column of a single table. I want to do this at least semi-legit, can anyone see a reason to have parent and child tables given the circumstances?
Thanks- I know this was a jumbled mess but any assitance would be so greatly appreciated.
sounds like you need to read about normalization, and get a pen and lots of pieces of paper and draw your tables out.
are you developing on android? you didn't really mention anything about this from the glance i took - the line height here is a little too close together for me to be able to read it all properly. if so, sqlite really doesn't manage fulltext searches all too well and the relevant info has to be put into a separate table. if you need that ability you're going to have to do some reading on sqlite.org
the simple answer is, no one can answer the question except you. you need to group the data together in a way that's sensible for your application.
and yes, it was all a jumbled mess. i'm sure you haven't thought it through clearly in your head yet as you can't explain it!
you could make this really funky with photos, gps coords etc etc, but again, without a solid foundation, you'll be redesigning your tables every time you want to update. so think it through!
oh, and one more thing: security.

oh, and one more thing - you do realise that with giving all that information you have, you're showing your bosses that you're not really that comfortable programming. that puts you in a dangerous position.
Thanks for your reply-
No worries on them realizing I'm not the all-star programmer, the prototype I developed last season / after I got laid off has already demonstrated its worth and enormous savings annually. Since being brought back on (now specifically for this project) last week, I've worked to turn a functional concept in to something a little more reliable.
This includes cleaning up my code (through continued learning), adding helpful features (none that will take weeks to code), and developing a database that will last AT LEAST a season.
My software was developed for windows mobile 6 classic last year on an Ipaq 111. The state has purchased several new ES400's by Motorola per my suggestion since they were already running WM and were more reliable than any cell phone (plus barcode, finger print, etcetc).
Every bit of the code seems to be fine and not require any modifications, it's just working on my database. In 2012 all devices (over a thousand- if pilot goes ok) will be live on one central database - I will do this through occasionally connected functionality offered with SQL Compact....
In the mean time, the state was hesitant to invest in a server and data plans for each mobile device... leaving phase I as a daily syncing operation. I'll basically have to sync .SDF files from each individual PDA and then merge the SDF files in to one, which can be reloaded to each PDA again. Hopefully I can accomplish this programmatically.
I suppose that last bit is outside the topic of table structures. I've given it the afternoon to think over and I'm not sure I can benefit from multiple tables with no static fields short of vessel registration #. This may demonstrate my lack of understanding for databases in general. I'll get there some day.

[APP DEV] Calendar Droid. Would like some feedback on my new app.

I'm developing a calendar app to replace the stock app for Google Calendar.
Link to app: https://market.android.com/details?id=dk.alxb.calendardroid
The app is in BETA stage and I would love to get some feedback from you guys. You can write here, or you can email CalendarDroid [AT] gmail com and I will respond quickly.
I would love to weed out the Google Calendar related bugs on the BETA and focus on adding new great features.
The philosophy behind the app is a calendar that is easy to use, clean, intuitive, and highly customizable.
What is currently implemented:
Month View / Week View / Day View / Agenda View
A few settings to customize
What needs done before release:
Removal of all bugs
Search
Custom "add/edit event" windows
More views (14 day?)
Selection of shown calendars
More intuitive navigation
National holidays
WIDGETS! Lots of them. (Might be Paid version only)
Your suggestions!
Hi there,
Very nice app,better than stock
I would like to give you some suggestions. If I were you I would do these.
If you compare your app with others, they are similar in view aspect. Since screen is not that large for everyone, the word "presentation" for ex. wouldn't fit the box and square boxes appear nice too instead of rectangle. Something like iphone calendar ( I appreciate what is good in ios or android)
To solve the space issue, you could put color codes or words and make them customized.
PPl can assign red to school, brown to office....
When you click them, a window pops up and shows the complete schedule
Note I have exaggerated things on images, not all boxes should have too many colors, by using square you can use the extra space down there for quick note or whatever you like. Didnt have time to make eeach box different
Again Im sure you can find better ideas, You can sell more if show something extra

Wow thanks for your suggestions. The color coding for the events you mention are just different calendars right? I for example have a Google Calendar for school, one for work, one private and so one. Each with a different color. Color coding of individual events would take some time to do manually.
You mention a window popping up when you click on one of the square day fields. What about making the lower part of the screen a scroll view with events of the day you have pressed? Then if you press on the square again you go to day view, but this way you can more quickly see the events for the day without loading a new view.

No problem at all.
You can for ex say you just wanna see work schedule, so instead of general window, u see a new one with let say brown color and only work related. new window for school and so on.
If you wanna see everything then you can have a general window that shows everything together.
Cuz it's hard to fit all the words inside the box (like in my first image) you can use colors or words or any other shapes you prefer.
Yes that's better idea use the extra space for scroll i like that may be more buttons, shortcuts, it has so many potentials. This way you keep it really clean, easy to access and havent seen anyone doing it
Make copy and paste of events possible and easily done from one date to another. Please see http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=2618 for a list of people who are angry this isn't already implemented. This is a pain if the event does not regularly reoccur thus has to be entered over and over by the user or the user has to go to a desktop or notebook to fix it from the web client. My Razor did this so it is just weird it can't be done on stock Android.

Thanks. That is a great idea. I think my next larger feature is custom add/edit event windows. Right now I use the ones from your default calendar.
With my own customer views for adding and editing events the possibilities are endless. Of course copy and paste will be a simple thing to implement. Then there are the ability to make more advanced recurrence rules, easier selection of dates (on a month like view), and much more.
Yeah! A useful month view!!!!
IMO, the month view is the winning feature. I can actually see is going on! What this isn't stock if beyond me. Thank you for, well, using your brain.

You will win a lot of people if you handle the full range of recurring event options.

I wouldn't waste time implementing this in the app. I don't know about other countries, but there is a Google calendar for the US. I just subscribe to it.
- WIDGETS! Lots of them. (Might be Paid version only)
I am curious to see what you have in mind, but, IMO, these could wait. I currently use Android Agenda Widget, because it integrates with Astrid.
Anyways, I think you are off to a great start. I look forward to see what you cook up.
Calendar functionality: Holidays

I most definitely agree with @weareallkosh that national holidays are not worth investing your time (at least not at this point, there are many higher-priority issues to deal with in the stock calendar app).
Since even Google couldn't implement holidays right in their calendars you can subscribe to (and they declined to answer why), I think your time is best spent elsewhere. So many people were complaining about the defects in Google's "US Holidays" calendar, most particularly that it does not extend far enough into the future that I created one from scratch that incorporated "recurring formulas" for all future dates, and I generated and merged in all "irregularly repeating" holidays, such as Easter, and "nudging" dates such as "Tax Returns Due" to the following Monday when April 15 falls on a weekend day, etc.
Since anyone can subscribe to this (or any other nationality/ethnicity/belief-based) calendar, there's little incentive for you to duplicate the effort. Also, particularly if you wish to support multiple nationalities, cultures, contemporary versus traditional versus orthodox religion variants, and so on, you can quickly get bogged down in endless debates over which dates ought to be included in which calendars, as well as having to investigate frequent reports of "your calendar shows X falling on Y date, but that's wrong", many of which are inaccurate. Just sucks your time away from more urgent issues.
Cant wait to test this app. Will the calendar have a bi-weekly event capability?
@weareallkosh, @tgi007
Thanks guys. I will put national holidays way in the back. Your solution is much better tgi007, and hopefully someone will make something like it for other languages and traditions.
From the input I have received I have decided that the next feature is custom add/edit event views. This will make copy/paste of events, advanced recurrence rules, and intuitive date selection possible.
@Rico ANDROID
With the next feature implemented I will look into the best way to specify advanced recurrence rules. I have read the specification for the recurrence rules and biweekly is possible in the standard together with many more features.
The hard part will be how to specify these rules because the standard is really flexible. But I think some templates to select from is the way to go. Like the stock calendar, just with more options of course. AND the possibility to specify an end date to the recurrence or the number of recurrences.
But maybe I find a great way to specify it without making it too hard to understand.
Thanks all. More feedback is welcome. This is great!

Good to see that you are reporting wrong location to us, we will check that location out shortly. You probably didn't know this due to our lack of instruction in the app, but the app does have a feature where when you are at a location that isn't accurate, you can correct the location on your device.
The way to do it is. 1. Click on the detail of the location(Walgreen), 2 Click on the triangle sign(button). 3. The app will search for a GPS signal and when it lock in, press the fix button. That will send us the right coordinate for that particular location and it will also reflect in your device right away. No need to way for us to correct it. This will also help order people in your area out too .
Thank You for using YAH !

thanks a lot

I see flags, lot of flags on the map and list, what's wrong? I see some retailer graphic, but lot more flags now!!! Though when i click on flag it shows me a list of retailers and flag next to it. Not as intuitive as having icons. Can you get the retails logo back?
dumble_bee,
I had this same problem the first time I installed it yesterday. It was in the middle of loading the icons and then my data connection dropped. It left with a bunch of flags and restarting the app didn't help. I found a fix for this, by wiping the catch and data in the setting->management application. Once I did that all the icons came in.
f8andbethere,
Thanks for this pretty useful app. I now know there is a RiteAid store that is closer to the one I normally go to because of this. I will take it for a drive this weekend and will report back.

Did that, helped only partially! i can see bevmo yay! but I still see lot of flags i.e. AutoZone is a blue flag? and so are others...
heeellllppppp...do i have to reset the device to clean it up?
We know about the bug Carlos mentioned and will fix that in our next major release. The work around is what Carlos has described. Go the setting->manage application->you are here->clear cache and data.
dumble bee,
If you are only missing some icons then that is because we are a bit behind on icon creation as we were focus on pushing a lot of new data last week. We will fix it shortly.
You probably saw some local food places with just flags in your area. Those we will probably never fix unless they are very well known.

dumble bee,
Pushed some icons last night. Give it a go and let us know if you still have issue. Autozone should be there now.
Enjoy,
F8
Took this out for a last minute shopping in San Francisco yesterday. Worked out pretty good. Data came in pretty quickly. The only problem was in the middle of downtown the GPS went in and out because of tall buildings. Other than that it worked great.
Carlos
Nice concept. Would be cool if it could also access one of those online coupon databases and show you coupons/sales/deals for stores around you.
SwiftLegend,
Thank you for your input. We are actually working on the exact feature you are requesting. It will probably be in beta in a few weeks.
Thanks,
F8
F8,
If you need someone to test the coupon/deal beta when it is ready let me know.
Carlos
This looks awesome. Giving it a try.

This baby has social network integration for sharing deals, coupons etc. If you find a deal you can post it and it is visible to others (TagIt) using the app. You can also share a tag on social networks.

Looks and sounds great. Reminds me of Google latitude. Been looking for something like this. Unfortunately play store tells me it's not available in my country (Germany). Could you provide the apk, then I'll give it a shot
why is shows "This app is incompatible with all of your devices." i have nexus ????
Hi, tried your app for a few minutes, but I realized that you are focusing on your home country, I am sitting in Germany and could not verify my account. But I must say, the setup and the UI is wonderful. Just the way I would love to see such an app. Way better then google latitude and all the other alternatives. If everything functions as described, then this is really an outstanding well coded app.
I will keep an eye on your app and as soon as you go global I am sure its worth a try. Also if you need a translation into German, I'll translate the strings for you.
Another question I have, what happens after the one month premium test subscription, which option still function after premium subscription ends?
The app says not compatible with OnePlus One running stock Android 5.1.1
Looking forward to try it out
I currently use Glympse for this. I am always open to try another app. This sounds like it is more like what I need. I have 3 teenage daughters. I also use the LOCATOR app provided by SPRINT APP store. This allows me to locate, but, it does so with all sort of notifications and emails, which are not able to bypass. Sometimes I just need to know where my daughters are and not send them a text message saying so without my doing so.
Thank you all for the feedback!!!
I developed this app on Nexus 7,9,10 so I'm not sure why it's saying they are not compatible.
Looks like I need to make this available in other countries!

Please do would love to test it with some other folks here in Germany. Could you also tell me what happens after the premium test month is over, what functions are premium and which aren't and how much it costs.

I'm going to be reworking the entire premium stuff. Currently when premium expires, you have to manually press a refresh button to get the latest data. more of an inconvenience for the user.

Makes sense, if you want to live from this great work of yours, then inconvenience is a must, in order to have users buy premium.

We are removing the premium features completely in the next release. This application will be entirely free. forever.
