Here's one: (from when I first got my milestone, aka, a newb)
I believe it should be added, as a new user to milestone would not know this. I had some trouble understanding this from searching the web when I first got the phone.
Q: What is the difference between the droid and the milestone?
A: See below
BOOTLOADER: (ability to load custom roms, custom kernels, etc)
Locked on milestone, open on droid.
* we do have some workarounds to modifying the kernel, such as kernel modules, but they are limited...
MODEL #:
Droid: a855
Milestone a853
RADIO: (what we use for phone calls, 3g etc.)
CDMA for droid
GSM for a853
2g: Quad band GSM 850 /900 / 1800/ 1900 Mhz
3g:
850 / 1900/ 2100 MHz for thailand, brazil, canada (telus).
900 / 2100 MHz other (europe, hk etc.)
* note motorola canada incorrectly shows that canadian milestones do not support 2100 mhz , but i am able to see wind mobiles network from my phone. however I am unable to join as wind mobile uses two frequencies (1700/2100 aka AWS/2100) for uplink and downlink
Now all this information is coming from the top of my head. I may be missing some information as I do not know what the droid is completely capable of. This may be because I am a milestone user from canada/telus and have only used a canadian milestone, not the droid. feel free to update / criticize the information here. I will update this if needed or when i have time. If you do not feel this post should be here, just delete it.
Q: whats the easiest way to root my motorola milestone on android firmware 2.1?
Is there a guide on how to buy a Milestone and get it to run on ATT 3G network? I know the milestone has the right radios for ATT 3G right?
Can I root and straight up load a Droid image?
Need some help
Thanks

Droid and milestone are different from each other, a droid image will not load up on a milestone and vice versa. you can get a milestone from telus (canadian provider) it has the necessary frequencies for at&t 3g.
or a brazillian or thailand version, but those are harder to find..
european milestones do not contain the right freq!!
Milestone bootloaders are locked, so the amount of things you can customize are severly limited, take a look at milestone development forums and then take a look at droid development forums. there is a big difference in the amount of modifications...
there are many guides to root a milestone, but it involves flashing a vulnerable recovery, and then either rooting via update.zip or via openrecovery (openrecovery the easiest)..
make sure you read the guides (search google i'm a little tired at the moment) for a definitive answer.
Why there is not Roms for it's XT720 i have search but i can find any rom ............
Is there any quick way to change a milestone boot logo?
Can it be done with terminal emulator?
Thanks for help.
Q: How do I change the Boot Logo on my Milestone?
A: **THIS REQUIRES ROOT**
Before making any changes make a nandroid backup using openrecovery.
First find the boot animation of your choice, search google or this site.
Change zip file name to bootanimation.zip and place in root of your SDcard.
Run Terminal Emulator(available in the market) and type the followings exactly as its written.
su
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2/dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
dd if=/sdcard/bootanimation.zip of=/system/media/bootanimation.zip
reboot
You should see some processing as you typed in the third line.
If you see an error, there might be a typo and retype the third line.
After reboot, you will see the custom bootanimation of your choice.

Q: Is there a way to change the font size in the stock email (exchange) app on the milestone? It's 2.1 Update-1, not rooted.
Is it possible to have the US version of the Milestone xt720 with open recovery?
how do you install motofrenzy image?
i wiped my phone with openrecovery already . and now i just don't know how to install the images . it tells me to put it in nandroid/adbrecovery , but there isn't a folder in my phone like that . do i make one myself ?
Can't open recovery menu
Hi,
I installed G.O.T's open recovery on my Milestone and did a nandroid backup & installed flac support + root (though my phone was already rooted, don't know why I did that
Now I can't open the recovery menu anymore. The device boots nicely to recovery mode with power+X, but camera + volume up doesn't open the recovery menu as before. Any ideas what's wrong?
Otherwise the phone seems to work just fine. Any help would be appreciated

I don't think so, you go into recovery first, that's when you apply the update.zip, you can't just run your own recovery, that would be too risky.
There a way to change the boot up sound? the beeps are annoying and I'd like to have the "droiiiiiiiiid" sound like i've seen in a few Youtube ROM demo's.
Is it possible?
Below is the apk file 1.1 I got from the internet:
http://www.mediafire.com/?l8gqi9egdna5vps
BUT,
I cannot install the apk file of Google Earth v1.1. onto Motorola Milestone (non-root). The system informs "application not installed". I uninstalled the apk of v1.0, then tried to install again this apk 1.1. However, it happened again: Application not installed"
I downloaded the apk file v1.1 from the internet. I tried to 3 different apk files, but the same wrong thing: "Application not installed". Though i got the apk v1.0 installation succefully before.
Please help to install!
Thank you so much

INSTALLATION:
Use G.O.T Recovery / Open Recovery to install this rom.
Currently require you to install a 2.36 stock rom, before you install this one.
Radio Band Requirements for different countries
Some countries require the original 3G files of your current ROM to work ie.
Canada, Brazil, Venezuela, Germany and some others countries uses a different band for 3G. If u dont backup the 4 original 3G Files and restore it over this nandroid once installed u gonna have poor signal, sms problems and HSDPA loss (even if u set apn and get conection its gonna be crappy one).
Files should be in the /system/etc/motorola/bp_nvm_default/ of your phone.
This can be done using OpenRecovery and a adb shell.
You might check this thread , if a update-nosign.zip file exists for your model. which makes it easier for you to install.

Changelog history
v0.51 1-november-2010
- Finally beat the reload issue with SenseUI, it should work alot better now
v0.5 12 august 2010
- Corrected WorldClock bottom slider icons
- update HTC Camera to support more resolutions and moto recording.
- Changed Motorola VideoCamera & VideoRecorder to work with HTC framework for optimal use of Moto Camera.
Changed Moto Gallery for proper playback of your recordings.
- SDCard is now always "on", so you will notice status is "0 bytes" when you connect to pc. No conflict with wifi anymore.
- Apps2SD support, EXT2 supported.
Use G.O.T recovery or other application to partition your SDCARD Partition no. 2 should be EXT2 formatted
(G.O.T will do this automatically)
- Apps2SD remaining space can be seen in settings -> SD & Phone storage. Look under "Internal Phone storage" which is your EXT2 partition.
- optimized internal storage space. Most apps are now in /system. leaving your with 171MB free internal storage on your milestone.
- WIPE is 100% supported but you loose the following apps, if you do.
(Dock , GreekIME , Maps , MotoCarDock , PersonalPortal , VSuiteApp , QuickOffice , teeter )NOT SOLVED
- Reloading of Rosie (HTC Launcer)
Reason for not fixing it is that Motorola Milestone simply do not have enough memory for HTC SenseUI to run stable with only 256MB.
the launcher is very memory hungry for all its plugins and graphics.. so sorry, no fix, unless you add 256MB more memory to your phone.
- Bluetooth headset

you brick your phone.. Image has been tested on a UK milestone and works fine if all files in ADB recovery image is used.
woah, nice work buddy. just got a question, if i apply this rom to my North American Milestone, do i lose the ability to access 3g/hspa network from rogers?
is gps working
i got one guy on IRC from Canada(im from europe, so im not sure on networks you got overthere), he tried it, and it works fine for him
You should try to only flash the system+data image of it, as the cust.img contains telephone info, which might be what you need to keep.
GPS is not working atm..

Porting is no easy task, when its not about development, and zeusdroid actually do have some customized wireless driver.
But i managed to use the existings drivers from Milestone..
And im probably not going to do programming to make the port perfect, as that not so easy, although i got some experience.. but none within driver programming.
im really happy with the progress dext3r, this is awesome.
just curious, any ETA for GPS fix?

if you know your way on a few linux commands,
then you're welcome to make it work yourself.
1 . copy the /system/lib/libgps.so from the original milestone 2.36.0 image.
2. flash motosense image.
3. mount /system
and copy libgps.so into the flashed image into /system/lib
and GPS works after a reboot.. So fixed!
of course all done from adb shell.

10.1 for 2.1 senseui roms are not real, it just looks like 10.1,
but the flashlite already reports that number.
and yes, flashlite works fine. tested on a few flash websites.
I have a Telus Milestone and I will consider trying this ROM at some point.
Just to crosspost from the other thread... in another thread I was told the following. Could be useful for keeping 3G.

cmstlist , there is an easy way to retain your baseband just flash the HK sbf , then , copy paste these files and make sure you set the permissions correctly .
Probably safest to do via adb if you dont make sure you reboot ...

So perhaps if you want to try Motosense on your Telus Milestone, then you should backup these 5 files (and take note of the permissions) before flashing the nandroid image. Then afterwards if 3G doesn't work on the Motosense image, restore the same 5 files.
Ok I wasn't able to flash only certain parts of the nandroid backup so what I did was make 1) a full nandroid backup of the Thai firmware (leaked from GOT) on my Telus Milestone unlocked for Fido, 2) a partial nandroid backup using the options --backup --nodata --nocache --nosystem
Then 3) I flashed all of the motosense backup. Trying a first boot. Will report on whether my NAM 3G is gone.
All I get after the M boot logo is a black screen, followed by a force close notification for system. Nothing else comes up. Long-press Home and I get no recent applications. Oh wait - spoke to soon! Wow, just got the HTC lock screen. Unlocked and now I have the setup screen. Asks me to insert SIM to place calls as if I don't have one inserted. My only option seems to be to press "Skip". Okay, home screen loading up now after the tutorial.
So yeah it's not seeing any phone service and I get "Unable to start Wi-Fi". I'm going to try a second reboot. This time the Droid eye shows up promptly (BTW this is very odd to see because Milestones don't usually have that animation). The phone boots up considerably faster than on the Motorlola firmware. *This* time, I do see cell service. In fact I just got a text message. Wait it just dropped again.
Trying to search for network operators. None showing. Strange! It does see wifi though this time. As the OP implied, DHCP not coming through. Meanwhile my Fido service just came back... VERY weak. Dropped again. Normally both EDGE and 3G are quite strong at my apartment so it's odd. Is it possible this ROM has weaker RF somehow?
Ok trying to set up the APN. Noticing the keyboard doesn't light up. APN set up but still no service. Reboot #3: Yes, wifi works now. Mobile network still very weak. Briefly connected to mobile data and it was EDGE. Test phone call fades in and out. Maps manages to wifi-geolocate me.
Alright, so I'm obviously having connectivity problems and only getting 2G. Let's try flashing back the partial I took from the Thai firmware. To be continued next post.
Okay! Flashed back my partial backup from Thai 2.1. Rebooting. Droid eye comes up, glares at me a couple times, back to the homescreen. Connects to Fido. Disconnects, connects again. I am still connected via EDGE, not UMTS. I try going to *#*#4636#*#* and selecting WCDMA only - no dice.
Alright well this has been fun. But obviously I need my phone service to work so this ROM is not for me. Despite having dutifully pasted the info up above about the 5 files to backup... I neglected to do so. So it's back to the full nandroid of my Thai firmware. But one thing for sure, Sense is very pretty!
Before doing this, I made one attempt to install Superuser.apk using the app installer, and then to install Root Explorer. Root Explorer was unable to get root. Maybe if I installed Superuser via OpenRecovery it'd be happier.
Okay back to normal. Goodbye for now Sense!
Backup restored successfully. I used Root Explorer to back up the 5 files in question to SD. Then I restored MotoSense one more time, and before even booting it up the first time I applied root from OpenRecovery. This time it booted much faster. (Is there any way the stock ROM can be hacked to boot this fast? Wow.)
Again, wifi fails to start on boot #1; succeeds but no DHCP on boot #2; works on boot #3. Signed into my Google account and installed Root Explorer (previously purchased). This time Superuser pops up like it should and we're in. I entered Airplane mode. I pasted in the 5 backed up files from the Thai firmware to /system/etc/motorola/bp_nvm_default after mounting read/write. Then I made sure to fix the permissions. Rebooted without exiting airplane mode.
After reboot I disabled airplane mode. Hey, FULL SIGNAL BARS! I did it. But now it's telling me unable to start wi-fi. Let me add in the APN next. Done.
YES! The little H pops up. I'm getting 3G data! But as soon as the icon pops up, it drops out again. In any case I know I'm connected to UMTS because my cell tower ID in Maps > More > About is 1957869 which is my local UMTS tower. Test phone call is *much* clearer and signal isn't dropping anymore. One more reboot.
On the next reboot, wifi is back. Upon disabling it, the lovely "H" shows up and then flits down to "3G". Testing in browser... hmm nope. Something still missing, don't know what. One more reboot, trying again. Internet works on wifi, but not on HSPA (even though the 3G/H icon comes up).
Sanity check: Dialed *#*#4636#*#*, Phone information. Run ping test.
Ping IpAddr: Fail: IP addr unreachable
Ping Hostname (www.google.com): Fail: Host unreachable
One more sanity check: Switched to GSM only, verified in Maps>About that it's connected to a 2G cell ID (57322). Full signal bars, good call quality. So swapping the files improved both 2G and 3G voice performance.
Since I had a bit more success with this approach, I'm saving a backup for future reference, and on my rare moments of idle time I'll play with it again. But back to stock for now.
G.O.T 2.2.1 released
G.O.T is proud to finally be in a position to present to you the 2.2.1 firmware files you have all been waiting for.
We have also finished our work on our OpenRecovery modification for this and previous builds.
Lets start with the Credits:
- The entire G.O.T theme for sticking with me during the past week and the numerous IMs/calls/chats we have had to get this done in time. I, personally, feel honored to work with you guys!!
- The great nadlabak and skrilax_CZ. None of this would have been possible without your continuous dedication and support. Nadlabak, go-go-go with your CM6 We are sure once you launch your new edition of CM6, our firmware will no longer be needed by the users!!!
- DAGr8 and -fufu-. Your ideas and cooperation with us (especially our coders/scripters) took our OR to a whole new level. As such, the incremental jump to V2 of the OR is all due to you guys.
- he_stheone64 for agreeing to “licence” his Theme “SummerBlues” to us as the new and improved G.O.T theme. Thank you so much.
- All the other help we had from the people that worked with us day and night and who would like to remain “silent” contributors. You know we owe you a lot!!!
Here is what you need to know:
a) Contrary to previous releases, we would strongly recommend you to use our GOT OR V2.0.
One of the first things you should do is use the “Fix 2.2.1 bugs” selection in the new OR 2.2.1 menu after you flash the sbf file.
This tweak will fix some of the issues with the generic sbf build such as dual USB notifications, replacing some stock Motorola applications such as the old launcher/mediagallery and adding the Wireless Tethering application.
DO NOT USE after installing the G.O.T. theme, as the services.jar is different between both versions. If you did it anyhow, simply install the G.O.T theme again.
b) The sbf firmware files are all modified by us including the vulnerable recovery, so you can flash and root straight away (same as with our previous releases)
c) If you flash the firmware, you might encounter a reboot after the first boot. This is normal and expected behavior, so do not be alarmed
d) We can only provide you with full sbf releases at this moment. We strongly recommend not to use any backup from 2.1 related kernels as you are bound to get into trouble. The best approach is to install the apps you need from the market, set up your accounts and customize your device by hand. This is the only way you can guarantee that any issues encountered are not due to an incompatible data/settings backup.
e) Performing and restoring nandroid backup from 2.1based kernels will result in a bootloop unless you use our G.O.T V2.0 OpenRecovery (or any other ORs that have been updated to V1.44 of skrilax_CZ base). The simple reason is that we have worked together with Skrilax_CZ as we, and him, encountered issues when trying to restore 2.1 based nandroid images on top of the flashed 2.2.1 firmware. We are very happy our cooperation with him was as good as it was, and as such be in a position to already have solved this issue at launch.
f) We are extremely proud to give to you the new G.O.T Theme for 2.2.1. Some of you may see the familiarities to the SummerBluesTheme of he_stheone64. There is a reason for it – we are proud to be able to announce that he_stheone64 has worked with us, and agreed, that his SummerBluesTheme is now the new G.O.T theme.
g) NOTE: On some devices, we have encountered that rooting directly after flashing without rebooting after the initial flash can bring some issues with RootExplorer not asking for root permissions. To be safe, reboot after flash so that the “welcome to milestone” menu comes up, set up the device in general, then reboot to recovery and root the device as well as apply our 2.2.1 tweaks with Launcher, Services.jar fix and Wireless Tethering app.
Testing experience from our team regarding features and functionalities:
- AGPS works reliably, no trouble found
- Bluetooth works reliably, no trouble found
- WLAN works as before, no trouble found
- GPRS/HSDPA data works fine, no trouble found
- Framelimit of 30fps lifted
- Kernel 2.6.32 includes and supports the generic 2.2 features known
- Tethering app (3G Hotspot) included, but did not work for us (network provider needs to support this feature failures). We don’t know whether this is possible with your operator, but we have included the wireless tethering app in the Stock 2.2.1 tweaks
- Market needs fixing to show protected apps, bug solved by using the G.O.T fingerprint of build.prop and market fix (provided in 2.2.1 menu)
- Overclocking works fine with the modified overclock2.2.apk written (2.2.1 overclock menu will install it)

[How To] Install The New GOT Update On Milestone
[Info/brainstorming] Compiling modules for the 2.6.32 test kernel
got it up and running and synched so far so good, quick question how do i install marketplace apps to the sd card I cant seem to see the option?
Overall speed wise its great. The theme is slick. Battery life will be tested. But my wifi will not work. It does not like my linksys 400n router. It refuses to connect, it will try then stop and say disabled. Help would be appreciated
Bravo G.O.T!
Anything special to install the OR 2.0? SBF flashed fine for me and phone works, but when i run the update.zip it just stays on the logo without going into open recovery =/
EDIT: nvm, forgot to copy OpenRecovery to the root of sdcard..
Just flashed.
But I have no idea what's "One of the first things you should do is use the “Fix 2.2.1 bugs” selection in the new OR 2.2.1 menu after you flash the sbf file. "
I've mirrrored them all on my server.
Happy downloading
Great News but i will have to wait, cause my Operator use 850MHz here in Brazil , Claro
And i dont want to loose 3G, if anyone in knows if its possible to save some items to replace i will be glad
I've been running it for the last 4 hours and so far so good! I have the cpu set to 900mhz any recommendations for the vsel speed?
Sent from my Milestone using Tapatalk
After the initial sync with google everything went speedy.
Did the 2.2.1 fix before even setting up the phone.
I'm getting 1mbit more from my hsdpa (running 2.3mbit now, barely hit 1mbit before). Still way too low for hsdpa, but I suspect that's my carriers fault.
Rooting and theming (standard GOT CM6 theme). Very pretty.
But the phone seems sluggish for a few minutes after each bootup. I have not yet changed CPU speed.

both go straight to 1000mh and keep the stock vsel. aka 56vsel no point for the gaysh 900.
apps installer is crashing for me.
How do i install this Rom???
wlan doesnt work for me either. later i found a "dns fix" inside OR 2.2.1 mod menu but it didnt work as i thought it would. my HSPA works like charm tho. so i cant really say its a dns issue (or maybe it is, they might use different route table)
I'm feeling a little crazy so I'm currently at 1.33GHz / 1330MHz with a vsel of 88. If that is likely to kill my phone and / or fry the CPU I'd appreciate someone telling me but the highest available overclock with the Milestone Overclock app is 1200MHz and 80 vsel.
For those running the themed version can you throw a few screenshots up? I don't mind the stock version and I'm cautious about installing a theme without seeing any images.
How do you install the ROM? It's an SBF file so you need RSD Lite. Look at the thread about rooting your Milestone for details on how to use RSD Lite to flash your phone with the SBF file. It'll also tell you how to install OpenRecovery which is a similar process to installing the new recovery with this.

Using RSD Lite , same as with any official ROM from Motorola. It makes this installation pretty painless.
See here for a decent guide. Skip step 1, and in step 5 you choose the SBF from GOT.
Hi All, This is an All-in-one thread with available roms (for both Eclair and GOT 2.2.1 leak), how to root + apply roms for GOT 2.2.1 Leak, petitions, projects, etc. Please read everything carefully and good luck
(SCROLL DOWN FOR LIST OF ROMS, PETITIONS, ETC!)
Disclaimer: I am not responsible if anything happens to your device. Please read the whole text over before applying roms. Use at your own risk.
It is strongly recommended that you wipe data + cache + dlavik (may not be spelled right) cache before applying ANY roms.
Also, make sure to have vulnerable recovery and root installed (I do not think you need vulnerable recovery for 2.1 BUT ROOT IS NEEDED) However it is acquired, root is needed.
Also, MAKE SURE YOU NANDROID BACKUP BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING TO YOUR DEVICE!!! GOOD LUCK
How-To Root (On GOT 2.2.1) (All the files were taken straight from the GOT homepage)
Note: Please, make sure your device is fully charged before you attempt to do this!
The following files all have vulnerable recovery pre-installed:
DACH – GERMANY :
http://www.multiupload.com/G9PP7JN78C
DACH AUSTRIA :
http://www.multiupload.com/P8DDXCWW03
RETAIL EUROPE (RTEU) :
http://www.multiupload.com/6X7H39HGCG
FRANCE RETAIL :
http://www.multiupload.com/PK28LXE4SE
ITALY WIND :
http://www.multiupload.com/3KYMZNRZW2
UK RETAIL (RTUK) :
http://www.multiupload.com/60B78PRKNY
TELUS CANADA :
http://www.multiupload.com/5S2CYGP3VW
Download the file according to where you live.
Now, you must install RSD Lite (taken from http://tinyurl.com/3xg5xwj):
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=N1MPCX1U
mirror: http://www.multiupload.com/jw25luksh2 (not tested by me, found from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=983516 thanks nagi603 and eXtink please report in comments if it works!)
I'm pretty sure you may have to install the drivers for your device, a simple google may help. - This may be required.
Next, open RSD Lite and click the "..." and navigate to the file you have downloaded above.
Next, plug in your phone in bootloader mode. To do this, turn your phone off, then hold the power button, the top volume button and the camera button at the same time. Then you should enter bootloader mode. It should say Bootloader at the top. Make sure, at the bottom it says "Battery OK". Please, make sure you have fully charged your device! Then click the start button. Wait for a while.
Once its booted, plug the device into your computer via usb, then go to memory card access. Then go to the root of the sd card (on your computer)
Now, download and OR (For this tutorial, I will be using Androidani 3.3, the link is a the bottom).
In the rar file there should be two things. One should be a folder named "OpenRecovery" (Note: Make sure thats the file name!) and an update.zip file. Next, put the OpenRecovery folder in the root of your sd card. (If you have never used an OR before, you should NOT have to replace anything!) Also put the update.zip in the root of your sd card.
Next, turn the phone off. Now, while turning your phone on, (THIS MAY NOT WORK FOR SOME PEOPLE) hold the camera and power button until you see the M logo, then release the power button but keep holding the camera button. You should see a caution sign. Next, click the up button (on the volume rocker) and camera button after. Keep trying it if it doesn't take you to a menu. Next, slide out your keyboard then using the d-pad navigate to "apply update.zip" and click the middle button. Once its applied, you should have a bigger, longer menu. Then navigate to root phone in the new menu. Once this is done, you should be rooted.
How to apply custom roms:
Now that you have root and an OR (Open Recovery), turn on your phone and plug it into your computer in memory card access. (Or, you can navigate to the OR [By above method] and click memory card access, it should be the first or second option in the menu)
Once you are at the root of your sd card, go to OpenRecovery folder, then click updates. After that, put a rom that is an UPDATE (Some roms are not, some can be nandroid backups. It should specify on thread) For example, as of now, cyanogen mod by kabaldan is an update.
If the rom is a nandroid backup (Again, it should specify on thread) (For example, as of now, MotoFroyoSense is a nandroid backup), then navigate to the root folder then go to nandroid folder and click one of the folders within the nandroid folder (any, it doesn't matter) and put the nandroid backup (AS A FOLDER, not rar) and finally, turn off your phone.
Then navigate back to the OpenRecovery menu and click updates (if its an update rom) and click it, or if its a nandroid, navigate to nandroid then nandroid restore, and restore the rom.
Remember to wipe before you apply any roms!
Now, as an addition, here are all the roms available for milestone! They can be found in a cleaner thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11593755#post11593755

Miui ROM original site is miui.com ( Chinese Developers ). There is also miui-dev.com ( Run by Markhuk ). Then there is Lalit's MOD.
I would suggest to also add a section that deals with HOW TO , like how to nandroid / how to get your phone to stock etc.
There is the european froyo leak, its in the general forum.

Hi, it may be possible to extract to other roms. However, it is included in this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=929646. For best results, I would use the nandroid backup created by sileshn

Just a question. I live in South Africa, and I got my Milestone here. If I check my version with the motorola software update application it just tells me I have a Motorola Global phone. So which vulnerable recovery will I need to download? Also, how will this affect my baseband versions etc?
I am currently running the latest stock Eclair on my Milestone, and found this thread as the most thorough instructions available. I am new to android flashing, but not new to phone flashing.
So, basically in order to upgrade to the Cyanogen mod, i would need:
1. Download this for vulnerable recovery (same as open recovery?) UK RETAIL (RTUK)
2. Install it via RSD Lite
3. Wipe everything in the data + cache + dlavik folders on my phone. (do I have to wipe the SD card at any point?)
4. Install Cyanogen Mod via open recovery
Did I get this right? Did i miss something? Thanks!
Is there are a step I should pay extra attention to in order to not screw up my phone?
Thanks and sorry for being such a newb.

If I were you, I would update to GOT 2.2.1 as the vulnerable recovery is already there. You would just flash using rsd lite (link in first post) I am not sure if any drivers were required. To be on the safe side, I would google (34 bit or 64 bit) windows xp, vista or 7 motorola milestone drivers depending on which one you have. I had drivers when I did this. I will try to find links when I have time. I would flash the according GOT 2.2.1 leak and use androidani 3.3 OR to I install basebands if they are the wrong one. It is really eqsy to root and install roms on milestone with this. I would just use my tutorial to install got 2.2.1 and install cyanogen mod 6.1.2 (best experience for me).
Good luck

well, not exactly a FAQ...
I write this as a user of a Korean Motoroi XT720, in Korea. I do not know or care much about using this phone elsewhere, but some things here may still be useful for people in that situation.
First the Korean version Motoroi XT720 is not exactly identical to the international Milestone XT720 and certainly not identical to the original Milestone A853 (Thanks to Mioze7Ae for pointing out about the original.. also see his comments in next post about more detail on the subject.)
For one it has DMB, the internal storage apparently varies on other versions (I think), radio frequencies and APN settings are not compatible if using ROMS from the wrong device.
It may be possible to make a ROM from another version work, but that's not my thing.
Roms from for the non-Korean versions probably will not work without some changes
And therefore, custom ROMs from English sites probably don't work. There are android developers in Korea, but I don't know if any develop for this phone.
Updating
repeating:
Roms from for the non-Korean Milestone XT720 probably will not work without some changes
And therefore, custom ROMs from English sites probably don't work. There are developers in Korea, but I don't know about this phone.
Froyo (android 2.2) gives you apps 2 sd.. which you need if you have many apps.
Froyo update linked from first post of this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=881801
Don't worry about the bugs reported there if you are using the Korean model. The bugs (except for maybe the mediaserver issue, more later) are related to the fact that people are using the rom on non-Korean phones.
The rom there is the same rom as available officially on the Korean update site. It's just much easier to get it from the above link.
To flash it,
1)get any version of RSD-lite (I used 4.9 and it worked). I used windows xp to run it. Mileage may vary with windows 7.
2) Run it. Load the sbf file.
3) Check that the file stats get filled in (otherwise you got a bad download which happened to me once).
4) Put your device in download mode (keep reading for instructions).
5) Connect the USB.. use a good heavy gauge cable like the stock cable, and plug into a rear connection on the computer. This really can matter.
6) Hit start, and wait a long time, this phone's flash process is REALLY slow. (compared to Samsung)
Within a couple of minutes though it should be clear that something is flashing and progress indicators should be incrementing. Don't wait hours.
There's a good youtube video somewhere for the milestone.
**Official Update
Unlike the manual suggests, OTA does nothing.
The latest official ROM version seems to be reported here:
http://www.mymotorola.co.kr/product/PrdRsdPhoneList.aspx
So in the unlikely(?) event there's another significant update, we should see it there.
Official updates are flashed by a web app from here:
http://www.mymotorola.co.kr/product/PrdRsdMain.aspx
A thread discussion roughly how to traverse that complicated Korean web page process to do the update is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=908314
Notice the non-Koreans failed, but that's because they had the wrong phone. Your phone should be connected by USB when you start the web process. It took me two tries and a computer reboot to get it to work, but it worked. It probably helped that I can read most computer terms in Korean writing.
**Download and Recover Modes
Download mode allows ROM flashing. Recovery allows wiping data cache, and applying update.zip files (which can modify your rom).
Download and recovery modes keys
Recovery (mostly quoted from someone else):
Turn off phone
Press Power key + Camera Mode Key to power on the phone and bring up the recovery screen
(Trianlge with exclamation mark shows after motorola logo)
Press Volume Up + Camera Key to show the recovery menu.
Use Volume Up/Down Key to highlight and Camera Mode Key to select
Be careful.. selecting wipe data, will obviously delete most of your apps.
Download Mode:
Turn off phone
Press Power key + Volume Down + Camera key
Camera mode key is the little one next to the cammera key.
Volume up means the one toward the top of the phone.
If the battery is out of the phone and if it turns on when you put it in... then replace "power button" above with "insert battery". You don't have to contort to do both as some people say. Either way, the power key or battery should be the last part of the combination.
**Rooting
Super one click is said to work, and certainly it should. I used the rageagainstthecage exploit with adb (the same exploit as super one click). There's a similar hack described elsewhere here. I can try to improve this section if needed later.
**Market Games etc
Many applications are blocked to Koreans in the market. This includes all games. Use the Market Enabler app from the market to fix this. I use it to set my provider to [us]T-mobile. If you get the pro version it can be made permanent on boot up. The free version isn't.
**Some Tweaks and tips
Launcher
The stock launcher is a little jerky on this thing, or was in eclair, (update.. I think froyo and/or the mediaserver fix solved this)
Anyway.. you can try ADW launcher or launcher pro or something else if you have problems. These sometimes pause to reload though when you hit the home key.
mediaserver bugginess
A few people using the Korean froyo on the Milestone report that there is a mediaserver issue where mediaserver consumes battery and slows the phone. I may have detected this on the Korean phone too, but not sure yet (not pateint enough). The solution offered around here is to replace the media server binary. Here's the link I found for a new one:
http://dateno1.egloos.com/28452
It is a Korean page, so it probably is an issue for the korean phone. I installed the mediaserver_d file, and the phone still works and yes, maybe better, but if you do the fix incorrectly, you can boot loop your phone and need a reflash. I don't know the difference between the two files offered there.
so the way to do this (assumes basic knowledge of adb use)
1)root the phone
2) cd to the directory with the mediasver_d file
4) do all this...(this has not been cut and paste tested, but it's what I did by hand, check for typos).
Code:
adb pull /system/bin/mediaserver mediaserver.original
adb push mediaserver_d /data/local/tmp/mediaserver
adb shell
$ su
# mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/yomama /system
# mount -o remount,rw -t roots / /
(the mount type and device name actually don't matter for a remount command)
# rm /system/bin/mediaserver
# cat /data/local/tmp/mediaserver > /system/bin/mediaserver
# chmod 755 /system/bin/mediaserver
# reboot
Keyboards:
If you want Korean and English entry, and want spell checking in English and an overall much better keyboard, I highly recommend Smart keyboard Pro, and download the English and Korean language packs for it. I've tried many keyboards. Keep in mind though, I don't like swipe. Don't forget to configure the spell checking stuff. You must enable it in settings and you must select it as your input method... long press on an input box.
Lockscreen
If you don't use pattern lock, skip this. If you use pattern locks you probably see no need to 1) press power 2) do a slide lock 3) do a pattern lock. On many phones the pattern lock disables the slide lock. On some, including this one, it sadly doesn't. The only unlocker toggle I found that fixes this is Anti Lock from the market. It uses a little battery and it flashes between screens real fast in an un-appealing way for half a second when you press power, but it gets it done. I like having it better than not having it.
Tethering
There's a 3G hotspot app included for this.
**Overclocking:
This device is potentially very overclockable/underspecced. (but don't take my word for it, I only know rumors and such.. do this AT YOUR OWN RISK This may damage your phone (if you overdo it) and you may be denied warranty repair.. real examples of this exist I think(questionable source)
First root the phone.
Get Milestone Over-clock. You must find version 1.4.2. On the web site you must click show all versions or something like that on the download page. Newer versions don't work on the Korean device.
Run it. Slide the slider all the way to the right to get custom mode (you really should use custom mode) Hit menu key. GO to settings. Do *NOT* check apply on reboot until you've tested your setting. There's a thread around here, I'll link too soon, with people's experiences. On my particular device I cannot get as a high a speed with as low a "vsel" (chip voltage I think). I run about 4 vsel higher or more to stay stable for long times during angry birds.
I found that 1 Ghz, at 60 vsel (most people run 1Ghz at 56 I think) rebooted my phone after half an hour of heavy use, and became pretty warm. I backed off to 900 Mhz at 58. I think this is ok for me. I may just be unlucky.. chip variation does exist, or maybe the Korean models are a little different (see Mioze7Ae useful comments in next post).
**A little about ROM file manipulation
This is just here to point the curious in the right directions. I have not explored this stuff much yet and some info may even be wrong.
Anyway, this is just a FAQ not a development thread.
Again custom ROMs from English sites made for Milestone devices won't work without some changes.
Kernels are locked by the boot loader (at least that's true for the Milestone), so no custom kernels exist (well not in a very practical sense).
Official Rom files are SBF files. SBF files are packed together smg files.
SMG files are apparently yaffs2 image files and can be mounted with loop mounts on a linux system or the phone.
update:
So actually you need yaffs2 support and you need to create a nandsim device on a ramdisk, so that's a bit involved:
http://www.aleph1.co.uk/pipermail/yaffs/2005q3/001356.html
and it seems you can probably dd the image file onto the ramdisk then, or unyaffs it.
but in the end that should allow actually editing the image, and possibly even producing modified flashable images.
but unyaffs works to extract the contents of CG39 (/system) and CG33 (/cdrom.. whatever that's for).:
http://code.google.com/p/unyaffs/downloads/list
You can google a windows version too.
MotoAndroidDepacker or sbf-recalc are two tools that can unpack sbf files to smg files and repack them again (possibly even making modified flashable ROMs). sbf recalc has a linux version but I only found a binary which dynamically links to the wrong versions of libstdc++ for my system.
It seems more popular around here to create "nandroid" images (which I think are also just filesystem images, but I haven't really played with it).
Open-recovery seems to be the tool of choice for making and flashing nandroid backups, but I haven't looked into this at all yet.
Nice!
About overclocking--be aware that according to paper specs Motoroi XT720 and Milestone XT720 have different CPUs. Supposedly, the chip in Milestone XT720 is rated for higher clock rates (800 vs 550 according to TI iirc, but Motorola put it to 720 to be cute, I guess). It has been claimed that it's actually the same die and manufacturing process but TI sold the chip slower initially. Motoroi has the same CPU as A853, iirc.
There are some korean ROMs. We don't know a lot about them here unfortunately due to language barriers. Another phone very similar to the XT720s is the XT701 sold in China. It has an exploitable bootloader.
From what we've been able to figure out the biggest differences are the TV tuner and the sensors. Things got really confused over here (XDA) because the froyo ROM we had was based mostly on A853's froyo (Dexter's ROM). Lately were working on a ROM that's mostly based on the Korean froyo. The file differences between the two are much fewer.
For now, the most important part seems to be running the right kernel because sensors don't work correctly when you're running the wrong one. The partition tables are baked into the kernel, so the Motoroi has a partition table better suited to froyo. The total internal memory is the same, but the Motoroi sbf has a larger /data and smaller /cache and /system.
Sent from my XT720 using XDA Premium App
Good info. I don't know these days, but years ago chips with different speed was largely the result of random variation and QC checks. If they sold it slower originally, then slower chips may have gotten through QC. I don't know if that logic still applies much anymore. I heard that many many years ago.
oops this post was in wrong thread somehow..

I have a Korean Motorola Milestone phone. I unlocked it in Korea & brought it to Europe to use. I did 'factory reset' and it worked fine. I had to 'root it' to install some special fonts. The rooting was successful and I was installing the font during that time the phone reboot itself and stuck at the first 'T' screen (Korean vendor). I tried to re install it to factory default but of no use. The problem persists.
At system recovery level I get four options:
1. reboot system now (tried & failed as the system is corrupt anyway)
2. apply sdcard:update.zip (I can't do as I don't have an update.zip)
3. wipe data/factory reset (yes I did this but still no recovery as the
default system is presumably corrupt)
4. wipe cache partition (yes, I did of no additional use)
with this background I wonder whether there is a way to recover my phone using SD card?
[ps. on two occasions the phone suddenly worked but I could never connect it to wireless network as the Input Keyboard did not work. Hence I could not connect it to Android application market (btw. the basic applications are still intact). Thus the possible way out is to recover it externally using my PC (if my phone allows me to connect it via USB or through micro SD card with system recovery console]
Any help?

Hello Fire owners!
I open this thread to keep all things of Fire together, only one thread, everything here.
So here we go:
THIS THREAD IS FOR MOTOROLA XT311/XT316/XT317, XT530/XT531, XT532 AND XT611 (aka SMARTFLIP) ONLY. IF YOU HAVE A SIMILAR THREAD, PLEASE PM ME AND PASS ME YOUR POST. LET'S KEEP XDA ORGANIZED!
CWM FOR FIRE XT XT530/XT532, SPICE XT XT531, FIRE XT311, SPICE KEY XT316 OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED
This thread was focused in the 2nd-Init for XT31X and XT530, 531 and 532. For almost six months, we worked patientlly to get the CWM working on our devices. The wait for CWM is OFFICIALLY OVER. In a couple days ago, our friend aweosomeabhijeet found a way to run CWM on Gingerbread. The tutorial (made by himself) will be posted NOW:
Hey Guys
All your wait is over.
Here I'll tell you how to get CWM for Moto Fire XT.
Disclaimer : I'm not responsible for any damage to your phone. I have tried it and finished successfully.
Try only if you know little bit about android.
This is beta version. However, a dev is working on not using a PC to reboot back into system, and is trying to make the installation simplified.
Lot of thanks to andrewidya
Required things
1. Rooted XT
2. Pc
Download these things on your phone:
1. Terminal emulator
2. Busybox(Open it and install)
3. Root browser
4. Pimp my Rom
5. ES file explorer
You can find all of them in the Play Store.
If you have done with it download the attachment.
Now main work.
It is not easy though but I think everyone can do it.
Steps:
1. Extract the attachment and copy it to your sdcard
2. Mount /system as RW.
3. Open Root Browser and copy bootmenu folder from sdcard/XT530 and paste it in /system.
4. Open Pimp My Rom and Add universal init.d support.
5.Create 97bootmenu manually.(For this using ES file explorer is recommended)
Steps:
a.Open /system/etc/init.d
b. Create a file, name it 97bootmenu.
c. Open the file as text
Type:
Code:
#!/system/bin/sh
stop
exec /system/bootmenu/binary/bootmenu
d.save the file
6. Change permissions of 97bootmenu to rwx r-- r--
7. Reboot your phone.
Now your phone will start at bootmenu.
Select Recovery>Custom Recovery
PS: If you want to get back the phone to boot normally. Just connect it to PC, open CMD and type
cd path-to-adb.exe
adb shell
rm -R /system/etc/init.d/97bootmenu
exit
adb reboot
I succeeded here's the video:

ROOTING & UNROOTING
You will follow this tutorial if you have 2.3.5 version of Android:
Downloads:
Here are the apps/files needed for Rooting -
1. SuperOneClick 2.3.3.0
2. SUT LR 1.8.2 (Doesn't seem to be working on 64-bit systems)
3. FXX_PR3_NV.xml and NvDefinition.xml [ATTACHED]
Before Rooting:
Prepare your phone by doing the following:
- Go to Settings > Applications > CHECK "Unknown Sources"
- Go to Settings > Applications > Developer > CHECK "USB Debugging" and "Stay Awake"
- Connect your phone via USB, when prompted DO NOT select USB Mass Storage.
- Extract FXX_PR3_NV.xml and NvDefinition.xml from the attached zip file in to a folder
- Now, install SUT LR, run the app
- Select the FXX_PR3_NV.xml [ensure NvDefinition.xml is also in the same folder as FXX_PR3_NV.xml]
- Your phone will restart.
It does NOT erase anything on the phone, since it only patches the ROM.
Rooting:
After the phone restarts, open SuperOneClick and select root. It will take less than a minute to finish.

about CG2.smg
Hey man I'm interested in the thread and i can help you extracting the CG2.smg
Here you are my tut. [for windows] it worked for me
1- unrar the file in the attachments
2- make sure that your file is named to 'CG2.smg' without quotes for sure, and in the same folder..
3- just run the .bat and wait for cmd to finish the job then you will find a folder called 'CG2-extracted' in the same place you extracted my .rar file
Note: you will find in the folder called 'CG2-extracted' some mbn files, systemsec.mbn is the /system folder in the xt311/xt316
extract it easily using unyaffs like a system.img file, if you need help in this PM me. i can help you extracting systemsec.mbn only, i dunno about other files also to repack systemsec.mbn you'll need mkyaffs and i think it's usable on ubuntu only and i can't help you with it
sorry for long reply but press thanks if i helped.

Anytime Sir ! I just want to help in anyway getting this device better, By the way here's a list of useless applications so far !
- 7x27_FQC.apk
- Arabware.apk < 7 megabytes and useless
- Wifipowersavingmode.apk < I think it drains the battery faster -.-
- i also removed all motoswitch APKs, And installed go launcher instead in the system. And removed pre-installed live wallpapers
Also if you have errors like "preparing sd card - checking for errors" in the status bar you can delete system/bin/fsck_msdos since i deleted i get no errors for my partitioned sd card
Q/Request: Do you know how can i customize Notify led ? Like changing color and speed ? also it doesn't work with whatsapp!
Thanks anyway ! Ps. led works by Notifyled.apk.. of course you know xD
And Yeah, i found some srs files also, time ago, i thought it would be awesome to have a panel for it ! but maybe it's the normal speakers at the back and it's drivers..

And we cannot use the control panel with the file incluided in the ROM. Needs a lot of files...
And i'm trying to por XT300 Toggle Widget to XT316. It will be harder but... it's beautiful!

Yeah, Motorola lock the bootloader, locks the customization and much more. We need a CWM. FASTER!
Edit: before 2.3 versions, Motorola odexed the roms. All of the files were odexed. But Motorola now deodexed everything. So it will be easier.
And i think we can port the CWM from XT300. So, let's try!

I didn't know that there was cwm for xt300, but i think, if there is cwm for xt530/xt531/xt532 it'd be easier to port, since xt53X is to close to our xt311/xt316 and it also have 2.3.5 while xt300 2.1 only
Edit: i think xt311/xt316 users will never have custom recoveries/roms unless the bootloader is unlocked, and it'll be so hard to unlock such bootloader since the phone is not popular

Some guys tried to do an 2ndInit to maybe try to get CWM work. But didn't worked. A file from the battery (when you turn off the phone and conntect the charger, the big battery icon) was missing. But works without this file.
AND I FOUND WHERE WE CAN ACTIVATE SRS! Is in cda.prop, it's configured to false.
So what happens if i changed the value to true ?
i don't think cda props apply actually i tried to change the value of lock screen support rotation to true and nothing changed.
And Yup i read something about that battery icon too but i didn't understand fully how does that relate to unlocking bootloader
i think the bootloader must get hacked easily since as i see it's a common bootloader in many fones for ex. xt530 xt531 xt532 xt300 xt311 xt316 xt317 or am i wrong ?
If i can test the ROM in my computer (i don't know how to do it), we see if works. And Bootloader it's not the same for every phone series. XT300 executes 2.1 WITH UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER. And XT316 with 2.3.5 WITH THE LOCKED Bootloader.
The SRS file is in the attachments. Just take a look on the 'st line:
BLOCK... I understand that is blocked.
And the battery icon maybe is on a apk or anywhere. We might look better.
EDIT:
I googled around and i found a thread that talks about CG2.smg. They tried to do the same what i doing, and didn't finish very well. The phone was bricked, but they use some files, replace and the ROM was going on very well.

i actually didn't understand what you said in the "EDIT" but i read that even with a locked bootloader we can have a custom rom, but not a custom kernel right ?
so you can recompress the edited cg2.smg files and re sbf it again after customizing it or am i saying meaningless words ?

OK. I will explain the edit first.
They edit the systemsec.mbn, repack the mbn and repack everything. but they've got an error. Then, the phone was bricked and RSD doesn't saw the phone.
A custom kernel will be pretty great, but we have to unlock the bootloader 1st.

so what kind of error did they get, cause i wanted to do the same as they and repack the rom as sbf and flash it..
also, can we try porting as .nb0 rom? i can see our stock recovery have the option to flash nb0 files

This is cda.prop right?
it has some tweaks like build.prop, if you tried to change the mobile model that appears to the market from build.prop it won't work, but if you change it from cda.prop it will work also it have some other tweaks that i actually don't know what's it's use
And Don't Forget Thanks Button ^^
XT316 bricked
Hello guys, sorry if this is not the best place to post a problem but, this is the only one active discussion about XT316 that i have found, i have this phone with Brazil Claro stock 2.3.3 Gingerbread Android installed, then i have installed the ChainFire3D hoping to have better experience with some games...
But i got a bricked phone... when powering on, the phone shows only the Motorola logo, then a black screen with no response, and continous reboot
I started the phone in recovery mode and tryed to perform a Factory Recover, but no sucess, same with Wipe Cache Partition option, so, what is left to do now is my question...
