[GUIDE] Pattern Unlock with Exchange Server Security Policy for 2.1 & 2.2 - EVO 4G Android Development

This actually maybe more of a bug than a setting.
1) Do not setup your exchange account settings yet
2) go to menu > setting > security and set a screen unlock pattern
3) set up your exchange account settings and sync
3a) if your server security requires a pin unlock it will ask you now
3b) go ahead and setup a pin
4) now you'll notice when you turn on the screen you have to swipe down with the htc lock screen then a pin then a pattern unlock.
5) install lockpicker and disable the exchange screen password requirement
6) Now you will swipe down then do the pattern unlock
I hated typing in a pin every time i used my phone when i was on WM and find this is a decent alternative.
To change your lock pattern once you have everything set:
"to reset the unlock pattern, simply enter the wrong pattern 5 times, and then login with your google account. As soon as you've done that, then you are prompted for a new pattern." -- kitstable (Thanks!)
Also here's a nice widget to toggle your lock pattern
http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.curvefish.widgets.lockpatternonoff
Hope it helps.

Updates for 2.2:
Look at this thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=655649
Follow the instructions as you will have to run the script to edit the mail.apk or email.apk depending on whether you are using ASOP or Sense client.
I am running this using the vael rom and it works very well.

Exactly what I was looking for thank you.

Thanks for that, just what I was looking for.
I started with a easy pattern, so found this out trying to change it - to reset the unlock pattern, simply enter the wrong pattern 5 times, and then login with your google account.
As soon as you've done that you're prompted for a new pattern.

Thank you.

You can grab Quick Settings off the market, this will allow you to toggle the pattern on and off, and change the pattern.

cant seem to change the unlock pattern with quick settings but putting in the wrong pattern 5 times then changing seems to work. Also found a cool widget called lockpattern onoff that allows you to toggle whether you want your lock pattern or not.
http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.curvefish.widgets.lockpatternonoff

Very helpful. Thank you.

I followed the directions here and entered the password for Exchange when prompted. I let the screen go and went to unlock, but I didn't have the pattern unlock. I just typed in the password and that is it. Looking at the security settings I now see options for the password and not the visible pattern.
Do have to use a pin for this trick to work? Or did the latest OTA improve security?

You sure you set the patern unlock and verified it worked prior to setting up your exchange account?

With Froyo, I think this functionality is built-in (i.e, you can use pattern unlock for Exchange) without having to go through all the steps mentioned.
I remember being able to do this with one of the CM6 nightly builds.

Yes, I did verify it before syncing with Exchange. I also created a NAND backup before syncing and after verifying pattern unlock. And if I restore I will go back and it will prompt me to pattern unlock before going into phone.

So even though the Exchange guy told me its just a pin, it appears the policy on the mail server is requiring a password, something strong than just a pin. So I think that is why I am unable to make use of this.

are you running 2.1 or 2.2?

I have not tried this, but I am unable to use a pattern unlock by default because of the security requirements. I am only able to use pin/password. I'm on 2.2 rooted now.
What sucks since GOING to 2.2 is that I can't use Swype to unlock the phone. I didn't mind the password since I could draw it with Swype. I hate the password/pin stuff . . . WITHOUT Swype.
Anyway to reenable Swype's use for password entry on 2.2?

lockpicker says its not supported by 2.2. it worked great on 2.1, but i guess the new build really messed it up.
if the dev of lockpicker would make the app work with 2.2, I, and many other would donate pretty good, Im sure.
Or if another dev could make an optionin teh security tab to lock screen after , say, 24 hours of no activity, instead of 15 at teh longest, that would be great...

Just updated first post to reflect some development regarding this feature on 2.2

Swype works fine for me on 2.2. Just this method doesn't seem to work at all for me. I think the requirements from our Exchange policy are on the strict side.

There was a post on xda forums that used adb to go in and change the settings on the phone to force it to do what lockpicker did but this didn't require an app or even a background service to be running. I am unable to find that post now but I wonder if those same adb commands would work on 2.2. If so we wouldn't have to wait for lock picker to be updated and we could get rid of that background service and save some battery life. I can't remember what section it was in and searching returns too many duplicate posts making it very time consuming to look through that mess to find what I am looking for. If i ever find it I will link it in here.

I have this saved at work, I'll test and post it to see if it works.

How to get rid of the screen unlock pattern?

Hello.
Well in October I have set the screen lock pattern just for fun and haven't used it till now. Now by an oversight I have activated the "Require pattern". Well to be honest I have no idea what my pattern was. Could someone tell me how to get rid of the pattern without wiping the phone or installing a backup with fastboot? I have root access and I would love to see a solution for my problem.
At the moment I have the screen timeout set to "never".
I'm looking forward reading your answers.
Regards
Ok it is easy. Just lock the phone and try the false patterns several times. Until that you will be able to log into the phone with the own google account.
are u sure its ur phone bcoz even if u dont know the unlock pattern u must be knowing the email id and its password assigned with that phone
it asks to login into ur google acc if u forgot pattern...

replace swipe unlock with unlock pattern?

hey guys,
any of you found an app to replace the swipe unlock for the unlock pattern, rather than having both?
not urgent as this is the best phone I've ever had, but would be a nice touch.

You're right... but it's such a shame don't you think... really no need for the swipe, if you have the pattern....
I thought that was the case...
May look into how hard it will be to create an app to do it
The swipe unlock can be replaced with iphone/hero/donut/eclair style unlocking using the lockbot app. So I think an app should be able to solve this (However I'm not capable of making suck apps).
there is a free app called "No Lock" which simply disables the lock screen apparently. If you have the pattern lock underneath this then i guess you would just get that.
i haven't tried this, but just came across it by accident and it reminded me of this thread
Thanks for that, but no luck
It disables both the lock and the unlock screens (if that makes sense)
It is quite handy if you are at home and have the phone on a table and having a text conversation where you keep turning the screen on and off, but not quite what I wanted
I wonder if this is something that could be built on top of to give us what we want, I will email the Dev of this app and see what they say about it.
I will update when I know more
Right then guys, I have had a response from BoD
I sent them this:
Good afternoon,
I have downloaded the no lock app for android. It is great app, however, there are quite a few users of android who would like to see an app that would remove the lock screen but keep the pattern unlock screen or pin screen etc. Im hoping you are open to suggestions, and as you have created the app to remove the lock screens completely (which is pretty much halfway there), I was wondering if you were thinking of creating an app capable of this?
If you are and would like beta testers, I'm sure i could get a few volenteers together to do so.
Thanks,
To which they responded (very quickly too):
Hi!
Unfortunately there is no way (that I know of) to do that currently.
I hope you'll enjoy the app anyway.
Have a nice day,
So.... It looks like they are not aware of how this can be done, IF it can be done, which is a shame.
Thanks sungrad for pointing the app out though
no probs sorry it wasn't much use

I have the pattern unlock enabled.
The problem is that to unlock my phone now I have the swipe (with the triangle and the curve) and the pattern unlock. I want the pattern unlock to replace the swipe unlock, rather than be requested as well as the swipe unlock.
It's only a minor issue I have, but it does get annoying when you are using it a lot (text conversation etc)

it is really annoying but i have an idea the application mananger if we could know its name we could deactivate it like what they do with htc devices they deactivated htc sense
nobody has a solution for that?
Not exactly what you're after but there are widgets that toggle the unlock pattern off/on. You could toggle the unlock pattern off when texting so you only have to do the swipe. SwitchPro Widget has this feature but I haven't tested it with X10.
EDIT: Found this. It may be what you're after http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.brandongoodman.smartlock
Bump? I just wonder if anyone found a solution to this? I would really want what the OP states
just wanted to add... be careful with the "pattern lock" ... it literally disables your phone after 5 wrong pattern tries. I nearly did a system wipe just to unlock it.. Luckily for me it accepted my email account with "null" for password to re-enable it
I had that no lock app and it looked nice and handy but it messed with the pattern and slide default unlock when I went to uninstall, all I wanted was the pattern but no matter what way I set it,the swipe unlock would always be there, after loads of reboots and setting/unsetting a lock pattern it still did`nt work, this is after I uninstalled, after I dont know how many reboots even when I had the pattern enabled the swipe would come up first then the pattern, sometime only the swipe, it worked itself out, so be cautious of it....

Potential WidgetLocker Pattern Lock Fix!!!

I like many Android users use the the WidgetLocker app for its vast customization, functionality, and practicality. However the one glaring flaw that causes great frustration to many is the fact that it doesn't work well (or at all) with the Android 2.2+ pattern lock. Well after playing around with it and some apps from the Market, I might've found a solution to the problem. It's rigged up, but it works well with a couple of caveats; here are the steps to do it:
1. Obviously make sure WidgetLocker has been downloaded from the market and enabled. Make sure "Appear on boot" is checked in the "Behavior" setting.
2. I have it set on a Custom Timeout, but I'm not sure that'll affect it or not. (Once I got it to work I didn't wanna screw with the settings lol )
3. Under the "Advanced" setting, make sure "HomeHelper Component" is checked and that "HomeHelper's Launcher" and "Select System Home" have been set to the WidgetLocker HomeHelper and your launcher of choice respectively
4. ***For Rooted Users, Make sure "Root Helper" is checked (I also have the last 4 settings checked after "Always unlock to Home" which is under "Root Helper"
5. Once that's completed goto the Market and download a FREE app called "AutoLock" by mooapps
6. Once downloaded and installed, open it, make sure its enabled and set the Automatic lock delay to 10 seconds (This confuses the system lockscreen timer for some reason, but it confuses it long enough to allow WidgetLocker to work properly, but not enough where it overrides the pattern lock)
7. Set your pattern lock to your desired time and enjoy!!!
CAVEATS
- This is clearly not affiliated with TeslaCoil Software lol
- I don't know how to get it to startup automatically when you turn on your phone
- I don't know if this'll work with the pin lock or password
- I don't know if this'll even work for your phone, but I know it works for my Droid X
***If anyone else would like to test this out and add to this thread that'd be awesome or if anyone finds an easier way then by all means share the wealth of knowledge
Hopes this helps all of the frustration with this otherwise great app!!!
[UPDATE!!!] It does do a weird thing when you try to interact with the notification bar, it goes back to the regular lockscreen, BUT you don't have to go through 2 lockscreens to do it
Good job...
Followed your instructions to the "T" and it worked on my Droid X running Liberty 1.5. I no longer have two lockscreens (LS) when I use the pattern lock!
I really appreciate you figuring this out and I'm sorry that I cannot offer any feedback in regards to alternate methods for resolving this issue.
Thank you!
*Edit*
Two things I noticed after doing this:
1. This is causing is a small delay in displaying the LS
2. I completely removed the sliders from my LS (see attached) and use the back key to unlock, but now I have to press it twice to get to the Pattern Unlock.
These are not a big deal for me, but I know that some people are really picky about these things.

Hi guys, I've run into the same problem but still can't get to remove the lock..
mine is as follow:
settings > security > screen lock
then it asks to "confirm saved pattern"
then i have: none (grayed out), slide(grayed out), face unlock(grayed out), pattern, PIN, password
If i choose pattern again, it will ask me to draw a new pattern and it comes back to the same.
the grayed out options are written "disabled by administrator, encryption policy or credential storage".
I'm running ARHD ICS.. i want to remove the screen lock pattern to default slide unlock only... please help

You would likely have trusted credentials set up because of a VPN or Microsoft Exchange account. In which case, you'll have to clear the trusted credentials first before none becomes available as an option. Do note that your VPN or Exchange account would be erased when you clear trusted credentials.
I had this problem a few days ago, couldn't use the simple unlock screen, the option was greyed out. Happened after allowing the Seekdroid app to function as an administrator I think, or could have been after adding my college (wpa2 enterprise) wifi network either.
I stumbled upon a proper fix though today, instead of just deleting the credential storage.
Go to:
-settings
-profiles
-select a profile and click the settings icon beside it
- at the bottom of the list there is an option "lock screen mode"
-change it to "use insecure lock screen"
*there is also the option to disable the lock screen entirely
This worked for me anyway, the simple swipe unlock is now default.
I had the same problem, but I found a solution.
The one with the profile option does not work for me, because I do not have this option.
I just chose Pattern , turned off the screen, turned it back on and clicked on Forgot in the right down corner. After I gave in my Google passswort it changes automatically back to slide.
In the settings the option none it still grayed out but its selected anywhere and it works.
I just installed "Lookout". Went to settings/security and selected "lookout" as my device admin. No i have all the options for pattern lock back.
silly little thing ICS
just managed to resolve this on my S3 after an hour-two of getting nowhere.
this was the problem:
- encrypted the phone
- after encrypting the device I did not like the lack of convenience the enforced PW unlock offered (sorry, I know it is the most secure way, but no friggin way I am going to type in a PW into my phone 50x a day...already doing this 500x at work, so.....no!)
- decrypted the phone and could not get any other unlock method to activate... not even after clearing the admin controls and credentials
and these are the steps I took to resolve it:
- found an old SD card and installed it
- encrypted the SD card
- decrypted the SD card
- made sure phone is decrypted again
- voila! unlock options became available again
Thank You

Doesn't work for me (Htc One X, CyanogenMod 10)
Went to profiles -> Clicked "Settings" icon next to Default (selected) profile -> tapped "Lock screen mode" -> Chose "Insecure".
Still no option to remove the lock screen (ie None, Slide and Face Unlock still grayed out)
I use VPN and have credentials stored, I would not wish to lose this, but would still like to have a simple lock screen instead of lock pattern.
Can I use "Slide" lock AND still have the VPN credentials stored? Is there some way to force this?
Thanks

S8+ with corporate google apps device policy?

My company uses google apps and google apps device policy to manage company google accounts.
For some reason, my S8+ is failing to pass the requirement of "Password is required to start the device." So I tap on that item in the Google Device Policy app. The thing is, it IS enabled.
Then when I tap to change that setting, it brings me to the lock screen settings and I can select password input, but that doesn't satisfy the requirement. I've tried removing all security from the device, then adding the password from the app, but that didn't work either.
As a result, I can't get my work email on my phone. This is a huge problem.
What I think is happening is that Google Device Policy is trying to find the android setting of "require password on boot" but Samsung has replaced it with the lock screen security menu and that's not fulfilling the requirement.
Does anyone put their work google account on their phone, and have they encountered this problem?
Took me quite a few minutes to figure this out too. Here's the path to resolve it:
Settings > Lock screen and security > Secure startup (which is way down near the bottom)
I have mine set to PIN and that satisfied the requirement.
Hope that helps.

You bet. Taping the missing requirement doesn't take you to the Secure startup which is the confusing part.
Glad I could help.
