Email popup for gmail? So simple and basic yet doesn't exist - Android Apps and Games

Or does it??

you already get a notification when an email arrives, what more do you want?
an intrusive, iPhone like pop up box like in the 90ies?

Sounds like he does. To each his own. Does Gmail Notifier app do that maybe? Worth checking out, OP.

Guess I get tired of dragging down the notification bar to clear the notification every time I get an email throughout the day. It takes more movements that way and it builds up to annoyance throughout the day. Seems easier to take that away and just have a popup that shows me I have an email and gives the option to close the popup or read/respond.
The option exist for SMS and it works great - figured it'd work great for email too. Surprised it doesn't exist.

I'm glad you asked - I happen to have just the right thing for you
Just search for "Gmail Popup" on the Android Market. There's a free trial version as well which works until the end of this month.
Looking forward to your feedback!

[WANTED] Growl push notifications on android

I'm wanting something like Prowl for android, so my growl notifications get pushed to my phone.
I was thinking something along the lines of:
Growl gets a notification > send SMS through email to the phone > APP intercepts SMS and pops up the Growl notification as an android notification in the pulldown
Possible?
Tasker (tasker.dinglisch(dot)net/index.html sorry can't post links yet) has the ability to intercept text message I believe. And I know you create many types of custom notifications based on the input. You could make a notification bar message and play a custom sound. Or even trigger application loads, and well, too many other things to list.
You'll have to play around with it a bit first to get the hang of it.
For the PC side you will have to find or write a program that will forward the growl notifications by text to your phone though.

Best i've found is to just set growl send an sms to my phone through my email.
This is something that I will hopefully starting work on shortly, However I will most likely utilise C2DM on android 2.2 (Froyo) though I may add a fall back to use SMS's with the app intercepting them.
Bump!
I'm switching all my notification stuff to Growl for Windows and it's awesome. I was looking for a way to forward them to my Android phone and found this topic. With Froyo now supporting push, I think this is easier to make without the hassle of WiFi, Bluetooth and other non-solutions. Unfortunately, I don't know Java so I can't code this myself, but maybe some other dev is interested in this? I'd gladly donate.
Edit: Hehe, only read the first sentence of the post above me..
When tasker intercepts an SMS, can it delete the sms? That way you get a notification in the status bar without having to delete a text msg.
There is: http://nma.usk.bz . It's just like Prowl, but for the Android.
Right now there is pretty much just the Android client and the public API to send notifications.

Hi uskr,
So does that work in the same way? You just fill out the details in Growl for Windows and it'll push through notifications to the phone?
If so that's exactly what I want Coming from an iPhone with Prowl to a Galaxy S2, and the Prowl notifications would be sorely missed.
Yes. We actually support both Growl for Windows and for MacOS. It's just like Prowl, but for the Android platform.
Enjoy!
Lovely, thanks Now the long wait for the SGS2 to get here

[Q] Facebook Push Notifications

The Facebook Push Notifications doesn't work for me. Chat is working fine, but not comments, Friend requests and so on!.
Does it work for anyone here with Facebook 1.5.1? If Yes what are your settings?
Android 2.2.1 DHD Leedroid 1.5.1a Facebook 1.5.1
it does not work for me either ...
I haven't had it working for me either..I will get notification bar updates but no push notifications.
damn it ... I think they removed this function.. but why? What is with a downgrade.
Should be 1.5.0
Yep, it's been quiet for a while here too.
It has been quiet my end as well for some time.
I remember we used to get them
Does anyone have the Facebook 1.5.0 version, I would try this out!
I tried it with fb 1.50, too.
Doesnt working either!
My understanding of Facebook push notifications is that they SUCK!!! Sorry about that. When normal people think of push notifications we think of notifications of things we actually want to be notified of like wall posts, comments, likes, etc. Unfortunately for us when Facebook thinks push notifications they think about pushing us notifications for things we don't care about like event invites and inbox messages.
I don't have much in faith in facebook in that we will ever get push support for all notifications :-( It seems to me that facebook's strategy for android will be to integrate features into the phone instead of delivering a stealer app people. This means working with OEMs as they have been as of late. I don't think we will ever get a useful app from facebook.
Currently I think Tweetdeck provides you with the most comprehensive facebook notification support and when you combine that with the actually facebook app all notifications are covered I believe. The only downside is that Tweetdeck is poll driven.
I used to get it for comments, wall post, inbox bla bla..
now didnt get it anymore.. oh well, thats fine... it's not like my world will end without push noti anw
I think 1.5.1 broke or disabled the push notifications feature.
flow
Have you guys tried facebook flow? I just installed it testerday. I has the option of utilizing gmail push notification to send/recieve facebook notifications.
Ive liked it more and more since I have installed it, and the push works great
Yeah man. Sad that Facebook not going to deliver an application for android users. Sigh..

I believe both beejive and trillian use push notifications.
trillian is half the price of beejive and if you use trillian's desktop or web app you can have your im conversations on your phone synced to those products.
beejive on the other hand saves your conversations to your sdcard and also has the ability to email the transcripts to what ever account you want.
trillian lets you set a custom ringtone for notifications where as beejive only lets you pick from either the yahoo, msn, or aol im sound. I think this is unfortunate though beejive lets you set a different sound when the app is active and when it is idel which is cool
beejive will notify you in the status bar when you receive an im as well as blink the led, though I think the status bar notification is timed (by that I mean the notification disappears from the status bar after some set time. This is what I have noticed idk anything official)
I believe trillian also notifies you in the status bar. trillian also allows you to suspend the app. this logs you out of the app on the phone but keeps you logged into all your im services on trillian's servers. I think this is prob similar to beejive's idel stat in that it is designed to use less battery when not actively using the app. If the app is suspended you will receive an email notification that you have received an im.
As far as support goes, trillian has a forum that you can post any questions in. The only support for beejive that I know of are their email addresses listed on their website and the market-place and I haven't had much luck when emailing them questions.
beejive also lets you set your status: available, away, busy, and invisible and also have custom status messages for each service. You can also delete, appear offline, and block contacts though I haven't had success with those features.
I think that they should re-add those features back.
For a second there, I thought I was the only one that noticed that Facebook push notifications actually existed for a short while and then died. I've done multiple phone wipes and rebuilds to try to correct the problem. Now it's clear that it's a Facebook thing and not my phone.
I setup a gmail account just for facebook....I get instant notifications....I gave up on face book notification. And only reason i setup another gmail...so i can have a diffrent tone and nothing but FB mesages. THe moment you get your message its sent to your gmail you setup.
I think the lack of notifications is on purpose, and it makes sense. Here is why, an average person has well over 100 friends on FB, if you leave a comment on any post you recieve a notification on facebook each time someone responds, if you "like" a post, the same thing happens, now figure that you commented on 20 or more different posts and made a few yourself, Do you people have any idea how incredibly annoying it would be to get a notification everytime someone "likes" or comments on those same posts or links anytime after? It makes perfect sense why FB only pushes Friend Requests, PM's and Events. I won't even get into the amount of server bandwith it would be using. It's common sense.
I suppose it would be nice for them to offer an option in the settings for the people so incredibly obsessed with every little thing that happens on facebook but I myself would go insane if my phone vibrated or beeped everytime someone responded to a wall post.
Uh....Facebook allows push notifications for everything. Just not push notifications from app. Everything you mentioned is pushed to my gmail account or sms. Yes does get annoying if 50 people reply to a post but FB does push notifications.

A very key missing feature from Android...

First off I love my GNex... such a great phone and I love Android. However there is one feature missing that is probably keeping it from being used more in business. That feature is per folder notification. What I mean by that is if you have an exchange account configured on your phone and in your Mailbox you have a rule to move email from certain senders to a certain folder you will not get any sort of notification that you have received that email (yes the folder is set for Push Sync). If you check your email and click on your account name at the top you can see if there are emails as they do sync and show how many unread messages are in that folder so the possibility is there.
It seems like such a simple fix for something that would have a large impact. I had 2 co-workers all set to get an android phone and when i told them about this limitation one got an iPhone and the other is going to wait for the Windows 8 phones.
I am aware there are third party apps (not cheap) that supposedly provide this feature (touchdown) but aside from providing that feature I havent heard great things about them (and all seem to negatively affect battery life).
I was really hopeful that it would be addressed in JB but it still remains untouched after all these versions

Have you tired Tasker?
Oh I'm aware there are apps that can help you with this but it should be a core functionality of the email.apk.
More apps doing stuff means worse battery life and more to backup/restore. Its hard to sell to business customers when their argument is "well with the iPhone it just works"
that's one thing that I really miss from my TP2 running winmo is the "persistent notifications" (that's what I call them anyhow). If you dismiss the notification in the curtain on android then its just gone. My old TP2 would show notification bubbles anywhere and everywhere you could think of.
if you had a text it would show on the text icon, if you were looking through your contacts it would show notification bubbles for text/call/email right on the contact info
i guess gmail.apk has that

Many custom launchers (Nova, Apex, etc) give you the option of showing unread counts on the icons of apps such as SMS, Gmail, etc. Those shouldn't disappear when you dismiss notifications, so that would at least solve half your problem!

[APP] SW2 Notifier.Send all of your phone notifications to the watch

Hi!
In the last month we developed an app to send all the notifications that your phone receives to the smartwatch2.
It uses NotificationListener Service instead of Accesibility, so it only works on Android 4.3
Personally, Accesibility permissions are very compromising for an app that only send notifications to the watch, and that's why we started developing an app using the new NotificationListener Service.
The app will grab all the text of the notification (not only the tickerText) and will send it to your phone. You can also mute some applications (i.e. PowerToggles post notifications every few seconds) and set a period of time when no notifications will be sent to your phone (ie. During the night)
The link to the app is:
Mod edit: Removed paid app link
We also have a Free version of the app. In this version you won't get all the text in the notification in your phone, you'll only get tickerText and you cannot set periods of "Do not disturb"
Hope you find it useful.
Hi!
I tried many different apps that bring notifications to the sony smartwatch. I'm currently using a HTC ONE with Sense 5.5/Kitkat 4.4.2 and most of the notification-apps have at least one of the following problems:
-) no smilies in whatsapp notifications
-) the sense mail app groups notifications as soon as there is more than one at a time, so if I get one email and 5min later another one, the notification on the phone and on the watch as well just shows me something like:
sender1
subject1
sender2
subject2
but I can not access the content of the emails... the content is only available as long as there just one new email... I don't know if the notification app can do anything about that, but it's something that bothers me
-) some apps don't allow me to exclude certain services like the htc backup service from notifying me on the watch because there is no dedicated app for that
-) some apps don't allow me to scroll through longer notifications
what about your app?

AFAIK, SW2 doesn't have Emoji in its charset, so any notification app won't show that emoji characters. We are working in a workaround transforming some emoji in an alternative which can be shown by the watch

Our app will send to the watch all the text contained in the notifications, instead of sending only the abbreviated text which is what some other apps do.
This was one of the motivation behind our app. We wanted to read the whole email in our watch so we developed SW2 Notifier
I cannot tell you about HTC sense mail app, but I can read full mail text in Gmail, Google's mail app and CloudMagic (which are the clients I use). I think that the situation will be the same in HTC sense clients, but I cannot tell you 100% how that will work.

You can select which application notifies you in the watch and which not. You can leave htc backup service out, and it won't send any notification to your watch. So that's a yes, you can filter out any app you want.

If I understood you well, yes you can scroll it long way down in the text of the notification. I.e, If you receive, let's say 10, messages in Hangouts, you can read them all.

I just tried out your app and here's my feedback:
-) it would be great to have an option to define if the notifier should by default enable notifications for a new app-notification or not (as it is now you have to disable each app you don't want to get notifications from and you have to wait until you receive a notification from that app, so for a while you will have to open the settings over and over again to remove an app from the whitelist)
-) unfortunately I have the same problem as with all the other notification apps when I receive two or more notifications about new emails, attached you see two screenshots that show what I mean... as you can see the watch just shows me that I got two emails from "Kamil" and both have the subject "Test2" (if you scroll down on the watch you see just another line telling me that Kamil sent an email with the subject "Test2"), but I can not see the content of the emails (the content is only visible when I have just one email-notification)... this happens with the HTC-mail-client and with the default android-client as well... maybe the notifications-grouping is a sense feature?

Thanks for trying the app and thanks for the feedback!!
We take note about that, we'll add that option to settings, in order to deactivate notifications by default.
About the other comment, did you try Free or Paid version?, In Free version we don't send all text of the notification to the watch only what Android calls "ticker text" which is the text you can read in the notification bar when you receive a notification.
In the PRO version, we send all the text which is contained in the notification (if you swipe down in the notification it will expand and will show extra text, and all that text is what we send to the watch).
I use Google's default mail client (have a nexus) and even though in the notification bar i cannot read whole text, in the watch I can read all the email.
I tried the paid version, it looks like as soon as there is more than one email notification the notification doesn't contain the email text anymore but just the sender and subject of each email

Hi,
I bought the PRO app yesterday, and from a quick test I am very satisfied with it. My biggest problem with others was that they couldn't show extended notifications of Hangouts, and this one does it nicely.
So, great job!

Congrats on the development and thanks for contributing to the SW2 community.
I am experimenting with the Pro version. Interesting the way you need to turn off notifications only after your phone/watch have a notification from that app or service (as opposed to WatchIt where you can do so when you first install WatchIt). I am running 4.3 on my phone, so I reckon I am the right target market.
Does seem to show more content on some notifications, but like others have also reported, if your phone gets a number of emails and notifications at the same time, SW2 Notifier only lists them out and provides the same amount of content in the list as WatchIt. Same is true with Google+.
Its a small $ investment and hopefully encourages people to develop for the platform, and its a nice looking extension. Don't know if it is enough of a difference to get someone who already has WatchIt to switch to SW2 Notifier. Since WatchIt is free I believe, and also works well with 4.3 phones (benefiting from same notification access), I think the SW2 Developers need to do something more to replace WatchIt.
btw, I am still trying to find the perfect notification extension. I use a few (WatchIt, Watchify, SW2 Notifier) to receive email, Gmail, and Google+, and the stock extensions to get Twitter, Facebook, Messaging, Slideshow, RSS, Missed Call, Music Player, Calendar Reminder. Seems the stock extensions that are dedicated to a type of notification still seem to work a bit better than the WatchIts and other broder notification extensions. Fortunately the SW2does not limit the number of extensions (apps) like Pebble does.
A suggestion would be good to select what notifications you want upfront as opposed to case by case as they come in.
Trying the free version. It's splendid so far. One "issue" I have is that I use Hangout and when a person sends me one message, its fine but if they send another afterwards and I didn't check the first, it comes up as 2 messages.
It would be nice if either my phone or watch could read the messages seperately but it doesn't which is a bummer. Other than that, its great!
ok, I've bought pro version, but it is as good as annoying. After 15 minutes of working I can have over 30 messages on my watch. Offcourse I've switched off non neccesary notifications, but for example for deezer I've got triple multipled notifications. Also really annoying are 'ghost notifications'. On my phone i;ve got 0 notifications, but this app shows me some empty notifications without any message. How can I rid of that?
Thanks all for using the app. It started as a personal need for us but it turns out as a useful app for everyone. We are carefuly reading the comments in order to improve the app in future versions.
There are some interesting things we'd like to comment.

In Free version, the text sent to the watch is shorter than the paid version, sorry. In the paid version you should read the whole hangouts notification including messages.

Thanks for the feedback, we've been noticing something similar. Android notification system is a little bit messy. Sometimes, the notification service notifies the app saying, "hey there is a new notification posted", but it is not. Filtering these notifications out without affecting some others is not so easy as it should be. We are working on that in order to provide a better experience.
Hi there, I bought youre PRO version, nice app, IMO only missing one feature, a feature that lets you set a delay between notifications of the same app, eg when a app fires multiple alerts, it would be nice to get only one buzz on your wrist
I agree to some previous post, have an option to have the new notification services disabled by default
So I've been using this app now for about five days. I've pretty much got most of the notification apps for the SW2 all except Watchit were unreliable. I'm glad to report that this app hasn't missed a beat. I've replaced Watchit with this one. I'm really looking forward to the updates! Finally a decent competitor to Watchit!

Does this app currently support or plan to support in the future, features similar to those shown on Android Wear smartwatches. For example being able to select archive on gmail notifications.

Not sure if I follow this, is this to replace my Gmail app? Or run alongside it?
And if it is to run alongside it does that mean I will have two apps draining the battery receiving emails rather than one?
great app so far, ive been dying for this very feature.
some comments:
1. if i delete the email that is the only notification, the popup should close.
2. often i cannot delete an email (a toast message tells me so)
3. often my notification tone does not play
other than these 3 annoyances, right now im very happy. keep updating!
