Man im going to change to Sprint now that this is going down. Im just waiting for that Nexus S 4G to come out and they also will have the Motorola Xoom. And hey it dosen't hurt i have a causing that works at Sprint

comcast has 250g cap. and i went over it a few times this year. thats when i was collecting all my favorite movies in mkv 720/1080p quality.. and a lot of xbox360 games... but yeah i got them all and only a few good ones come out every week so i average around 100 to 200 every month. i dont hulu or stream any video i rather download the damn thing and play on my blueray

In 2000 I needed to find a new provider, mine was sucking pretty hard at the time. I switched to AT&T. I brought my new phone home, (some kinda peanut shaped motorola) and waited for service. 2 days later still waiting for service. I called customer service to find out why my service wasn't activated yet. The csr I was speaking to, couldn't give me any kind of a reasonable answer as the "it could take up to 48 hrs to activate" time frame had expired. I eventually asked to speak with a svc mgr, which they promptly brought on the phone. He eventually sent me to tech support and here is what I was told. this is the honest to Gods truth. "When the shuttle was landing 3 days ago, it was rerouted from cape Canaveral to Edwards air base in California, it passed too close to our 'programming' tower and caused it to fail and has not yet been restarted." I immediately went back to the store and returned my phone and cancelled my contract, and signed with a company called "voice stream", which eventually became T-mobile.
Since ATT and TMo are merging, I got to thinking, this SHOULD result in better service (and by service I mean signal strength, 3g availability, etc), shouldn't it?
But, I'm left to wonder. When I had cingular, I loved them, and I loved their service. Didn't ever really have deadspots. Once ATT bought them though, my house became a near dead zone >.<
I would love to think that ATT would use the existing TMo equipment to strengthen their network, but I'm not so sure...
What do you guys think??

I think that any time that you reduce competition, especially when the US Government spent a decade and billions of dollars to split this exact corporation up, the customer will always lose.
I honestly don't think that AT$T will do jack **** to give their users a better experience. I think that their "4G" initiative is a perfect example of this - "Hey, I have a great idea. Get this - we'll take our existing 3G network and - now this is brilliant - we'll call it....."4G". Boom. Done. We don't have to spend anything on upgrading our infrastructure." Now I realize that I'm not being entirely fair to AT$T on this, but they are really not using any new technology in this supposed 4G network. It's all been around for 2+ years. To me, this equates to seriously and fundamentally misleading customers - which they have become seasoned veterans at.
Additionally, their network is severely overloaded. They don't have the trunk bandwidth to properly service all of their towers, even in rural areas. When they acquire T-Mo, they will get a lot of customers to add to this already overloaded system. It is unclear to me how much work they would be willing to put in to this new joint infrastructure. I'd wager that T-Mo will will operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary for a fair amount of time if this acquisition gets approved (and I hope it does not).
In short, I think that this will absolutely not improve AT$T's network; I think it will do the opposite at least in the short to mid term. I think AT$T will continue their deceptive and manipulative business practices (forcing grandmothers on data plans because their phone has a screen big enough for them to see the phone numbers, etc) for a very long time. Reducing competition in this arena is a very dangerous game and it will only lead to the government having to spend a ton of our money to split up an evil monopoly. Again.
Just my $.02 though.
Completely agree with the above comment. I believe that the worst post of this is going to be the lack of competition that will result.as most companies already have a relationship of sharing cell towers service improvements will be limited if any at all

I dont use my cell data really at all, there is only Edge out by where I am and I am just fine with it. Always around a wifi connection and 95% of my data goes over wifi. Over cell i maybe do 100megs a month. Never had a dropped call that was not because i was in the middle of nowhere or my fault in 6+ years.
It is exciting to see what the network will be like once T-mobile towers get changed over. just think of the 4G coverage area.
While i do agree that less competition is a bad thing, the network i already pay for and am getting just fine coverage for my uses is about to get much bigger and much faster. That I am all for.

Why ppl keep thinking AT&T bought Cingular?
It is other way around. Cingular bought AT&T and decided to drop Cingular name and use AT&T name instead.
I was with AT&T wireless before Cingular bought it. I have better custom service and can buy new phones as many times per year as I want on Premier account. Ever since Cingular bought AT&T, it's all going down hill. Not only I have to wait 2 years to qualify for discounted phone but also the price on Premier is usually $50 higher than non-Premier.
Same here.. Kinda ready to try new waters. Just bought the Thunderbolt. Want to try it out and see how it is..

Nope. The history is too long for most to remember. Cingular (often referred to as Orange) first purchased AT&T wireless division (often referred to as Blue) and AT&T wireless name in 2004. SBC purchased rest of the AT&T in 2005. Google it. SBC is an evil corporation that everybody hates. Changing the name to AT&T is one way to try improve its image. It worked as most today has no clue who is AT&T really.

Anyway, I agreefatbas202. AT&T really should invest to improve its network. Both coverage and data speed. Also stop blocking updates.
Backbone and Cell towers will now be shared, so better service for users, but the spectrum used will be intersting sonce not all phones are quad band for all their capabilites.
TMO users wil get the biggest boost.
Now about the user a few posts earlier complaining about ATT 4G.
TMO did it first and has a slower network. ATT was the last of the major carriers to call the small upgrade to their current tech 4G.
ATT users will get a possible boost since they can use more towers in their areas and this also depends on phone capabilities.
Everyone wins in this merger even when you look at price points and devices and plans. The monopoly point of view is ok, but with two other major carriers and multiple minor ones that argument is a smoke screen.

Interestingly enough, AT&T held a majority of stakes in Cingular and Bell South (SBC) held the minority. Once AT&T and Bell South merged into a new company they dropped the Cingular brand and started marketing their wireless service under the "AT&T Wireless" brand name.
So when you loved Cingular, you were really loving AT&T/Bell South.
As for what is going to happen with the TMo network when AT&T sucks them up... who knows. However, if the deal does go through, I don't think they will dismantle the TMo 4G network, since AT&T needs it.
AT&T gets accelerated 4G, and T-Mobile gets expanded coverage.

Without competition AT&T is going to have even more ridiculous policies. That's what I'm most worried about.
T-Mobile was putting a brake on accelerating prices and also gave consumers more options like contract free pricing. I'm sure as heck that AT&T doesn't care about continuing that....

Also, I thought ATT users would benefit most... all my friends with TMO have much better signal strength everywhere, higher speeds too lol so I'm surprised (though ATT's network is much larger and so it makes sense) that you are predicting the opposite.
But yeah, hopefully this will result in price drops... But w/o competition, it may result in price jacking >.<

I'm not sure what to make of it, even if it does succeed. I prefer T-Mobile to AT&T for better data speeds and cell service where I am. But AT&T has decent cell service, too. Their data speeds aren't as good as T-Mobile's. Regardless of whatever happens with the acquisition, T-Mobile would be wise to market quad band 3G data phones because just the idea of AT&T buying them will severely hamper any sales of phones. If people know their brand new T-Mobile smartphones will continue to work with AT&T, then they will continue to buy. But if T-Mobile doesn't take steps to ensure the continued operation of their phones with AT&T, even if the acquisition fails, then sales will plummet.

I agree. Some T-Mobile devices already support AT&T 3G. To my understanding the Vibrant does already. Although I haven't tried it for myself. They are also releasing several new phones in the near future that got me all excited such as the HTC Sensation. I love pretty much everything about that phone and I can't wait until it's release this summer! BUT! If I can't use it on AT&T's 3G network... then what would be the point of buying it? Unless AT&T adopts T-Mobiles 3G spectrum which is also a possiblity. But honestly, I am having second thoughts now about upgrading to a new phone because what if this merger DOES go through and worse case scenerio DOES happen? I'm on a T-Mobile Loyalty plan that I love! After this deal goes through (assuming of course, it does) I don't think that AT&T will want to keep me on this 'special' plan.

T-Mobile keeps saying that nothing will change.
AT&T says that nothing will change.
But we all know that AT&T is not going to be offering T-Moble rate plans to new customers so they will probably be grandfathered. Which means once you change your T-Mobile rate plan to an AT&T plan... you can't go back. Also when you change your phone by upgrading it is possible that you may have to change your rate plan and services.
So worse case scenario here, you go with the merger, become an AT&T customer and two or three years down the row you want to get the newest and latest phone. By that time AT&T will more than likely NOT be able to allow you to keep your current plan.
But... all of that is just my own personal assumption and again... worse case scenario.
AT&T haven't acquired TMobile. Only T-Mobile USA as I understand it. Either way, my feelings are nothing. I nothing it as I'm English and really don't care nor understand the politics of choosing a phone provider in America!

My opinion is that it will only benefit AT&T customers (maybe)
T-mobile customers will be screwed. We will be grandfathered in until we want an upgrade and be forced to switch. It will also create a GSM monopoly which will benefit no one (customers, I don't care about shareholders or CEO bonuses) I truly hope they block this merger.

As one of the oldest people in this forum, this will not be good for the consumer. I do mergers and acquisitions, and this one will not be a price reduction to us. Bottom line this will not benefit us the consumer. It will help ATT... but for us....... we will come up short and most likely have to look at going to Verizon or Sprint I hope it does not go through.
It is a terrible concept. At&t claims it will save consumers money, but as soon as new phones come out, and T-mobile customers want to upgrade to them, they will have to move to AT&T's expensive plans. I think the reasonably priced underdogs should have teamed up (Sprint and T-mobile) And I mean teamed up not bought out. Then they would be able to afford their cheap plans, they would be given the newest phones, and would make it to number one. Instead At&t will suck everyone dry until Sprint is out of business, and At&t customers realize how much they are getting ripped off. Then it will just be Verizon on top.

There's a reason Ma Bell was split up in 1984 due to an antitrust suit. Slowly they're sucking up the competition again. I don't think that having a GSM monopoly here in America is a good choice at all. It's bad for consumers because it's taking away our choices. I prefer GSM at this point to CDMA because I like the flexibility of a sim card and the fact that as far as 3G is concerned, the speeds are faster. (I'm not factoring in anything that has to do with LTE sim cards as it's still too new) I don't want to switch to Sprint or Verizon, I get too good of a deal on T-Mobile. I've had AT&T in the past and I lived in an area with a TON of dropped calls. It was horrid, and I hated their customer service. I do NOT want to be a part of AT&T again. I really hope this does not get approved. At least then T-Mobile gets 3 billion dollars from AT&T, some spectrum, and roaming agreements.

HERE IS MY REPLY / VIEW ON THIS from another post. We need to show our resent to FCC and DoD to stop this deal. Is there any cases/notices/appeals/votes going on ?? I am no lawer but i seriously believe that we can win the case by just presenting some of the FACTS from these posts.
Every company has flaws. For ATT it happens to be their network. As another member said pick your poison. I will agree with you that verizon is even more expensive than ATT but i wont agree that TMO-ATT merger can be good. I wont compare services as they are location dependent. But just for the competition sake. For e.g. :
1. TMO offers completely different plans than ATT. (and one of the cheapest data plans for $10). Also international users still have a choice of unlimited data plans. Its just what suits you.
2. TMO has more choices of top smartphones. Some of the current and future dual core phones for TMobile are - LG G2X, HTC sensation, Galaxy S2 while Atrix is the only dual core yet announced (Both are supposed to get LG 3Ds). TMO even beats ATT selection in single cores. Almost a year old Iphone 4 and Captivate are next best phones on ATT. While TMO has/had plenty of HTC, Samsung and motorola phones to choose from.
Just answer if GPS on captivate didnt work what choice were ATT customers given - none till this feb, meanwhile all the other companies released tons of android devices to suit everybodys needs. I know ATT supposed to release 15-20 android phones this year but when ? we are done with 1/3 year and all we know is LG thrill 3D and Infuse without any dates. I am sure even then TMO will have more choices to select from.
Its very important for US customers to have GSM competition as all new phone technology in world is first released in GSM. CDMA versions (IPhone, Bionic) are always months late.
3. Again right now TMOs 4G is ON while ATTs not. Atleast some GSM customers have a choice to select a working service.
4. As for what you said "Better coverage, lower prices? ", I seriously doubt less GSM competition will result in lower prices. Plus GSM coverage will still be the same. Its just that ATT will have it all and customers wont have any choice.
To conclude, If TMo-ATT deals is allowed to happen, competition (all the above stated FACTS) will severly degrade with only one GSM player.
I tried to be as neutral as i could & Just presented it from shoppers point of view. I know ATT has many positives over TMo as well. All the more reason the deal shouln't happen. Just to have a choice and maintain competition of devices and services. ATT should improve their network like everybody else by investing in it rather than buying off competition.

What's going to happen is just like what happened when alltel got baught out by verizon. Here's the scoop when your grandfathered in with tmobile and the switch happens, you can still keep your plan when you upgrade. You can still have the tmo plan but att is billing you. So it won't hurt people I don't think. Just better signal all around. Besides when the buy out is complete there will still be tmobile stands in some markets, if it goes accordingly as it did with alltel and verizon. Good or bad? I say good! Now America will have a good gsm network. Very much comparable to verizon.

Although I enjoyed the data speed of T-Mobile, I am glad I am no longer paying a charge to them. This business with their future phones is a sign of how un-serious they take their consumer business. And because of that, they do deserve the lack of business their decisions will cause.
Not producing phones that will fully function of AT&T's 3G/4G service is just pure willy-nilly ignorant and T-Mobile needs to feel the heat of their ignorance. The so-called "super phone" coming to T-Mobile, the HTC Sensation, will be a no-seller because of how T-Mobile chooses to conduct their business.

Yea, I'm thinking of switching back to AT&T as well. Will get a phone that works as long as I need it to, and much better network coverage. Data speeds aren't that big a deal to me, as long as it's around 2mbps download 1mbps up I'm more than content...
And I can still get a 4GB data plan with an iPhone if I go back...
Not too concerned here. 2 of my 3 t-mobile devices fully support at&t's 3g and 4g bands. Just my hd2 will need to be replaced, and that's years away. Not worried.
edit: And phones are planned many months if not a year (or more) in advance. The at&t - t-mobile merger most likely wasn't even in the outlook when they made that phone in the first place.

Well, that's assuming that the merger goes through.
And even if it does, it's not T-Mobile themselves who produce the phones, they can only buy what the manufacturers are selling.

Why would you invest extra money into adding a whole new radio into a handset if there is no garuntee that the merger will go through? The next complaint/answer would be "tmo's handsets are sooo needlesly expensive". Probably because someone thought it was a good idea to put unecassary hardware in a phone you probably wont even remember when (if?) the merger goes through.
I get calls like this all the time, if the service doesnt work for you i completely understand- Please find another service because getting the same whiney call day in and day out costs t mobile that much more money keeping an unhappy customer.
Let me be clear id rather handle 10000 calls about our coverage and service then silly reasons like this, you dont need to justify your reason to leave a carrier.. just leave.

To be honest, that came off a little strong, but I still feel it was justified. The Original post should be re-read, then see what was more flame-bait. My statement was the truth, it was "ignorant". Ignorance isn't an insult, its simply stating the the post has no merit into what T-Mobile is doing with their products.
T-Mobile still remains a competitor to AT&T, why would they start to have manufacturers incorporate further frequencies in their devices that support the competitors products? I don't see AT&T doing that with their products, nor Verizon or Sprint.
Interesting. And maybe of interest to me. Someone from t mobile has been hard on my heels to switch from sprint to t mobile. She countered every advantage i thought sprint had: pricewise, 4g coverage etc. If I did not switch yet, cause I am a creature of habits and stick to sprint cause: it is what I started with.

Actually Sprint and Verizon both work on the same 2 frequencies. We're allowed to roam on Verizon as much as we want, included in the plan (there's no hard limit, but don't overuse it), and Verizon customers get to roam on Sprint.
AT&T will become the only GSM phone provider in california when this takes place.
Not surprise one bit. T-MobileUS is notorious for false advertising or even intended false advertising on a bunch of their handsets. How can you trust a company who intentionally commercialized the whole "4G" craze by simply stating that actual 4G infrastructure wasn't worth it and HSPA+ was more than just enough? Good thing they got bought out.

I'm in Columbus, Ohio one of the Wideband LTE markets and my speeds haven't gone any higher yet so not sure it's activated in my area yet. Still good speeds without Wideband LTE.

I'm still kind of pissy that T-Mobile pulled a fast one and sent me renew later for my discount but dropped the association. lol I told TmoNews about and they did a story on it. Back when T-Mobile tried to drop discounts but didn't because customers were pissed they said current people with a discount would be grandfathered in. I have 4 lines and the savings was over 20 bucks. Not all about the money just the way T-Mobile messed up the discount thing not once but twice and I'm not alone. I have a discount AT&T and Verizon and looking into Cricket Aio.

I was with Sprint 14 years and left them a year ago for T-Mobile because they kept telling my slow web speeds was because of four of my phones were defective. lol If the Sprin T-Mobile merger happens I'm probably gone even if T-Mobile is running the show. I don't see how the will lower prices like the Softbank owner says but probably awhile before it happens if it happens at all. The good thing is T-Mobile is lowering prices for all the carriers.

I had Sprint for 10 years, and actually liked them alot, until they were bought by Softbank; then they became just as tough to deal with as ATT/Verizon, plus, their network went to hell, and even though Chicago was one of their first cities with the new network, we couldn't even make calls in our house, let alone get any reliable data speed..
I am counting on the FTC to not let this merger happen, and if they do, I will probably just buy a Virgin Mobile phone and go that route; all the "major" carriers really suck now, except TMO, IMO, and its not worth partnering with any of them at this point.
Well apparently the rhapsody deal is only for the credit check unlimited plans. If you're on the no credit check unlimited plan you have to pay Four to Ten dollars for service. I've been having issues the past few day with my service in Dallas getting 5-10megs where I normally get 35-50 megs down and for a long time. Apparently there is something going on that should be corrected in the next 72hrs said the T-Mobile rep. I'm hoping they're upgrading or something, but I don't see getting much higher than I'm used to atm.
EDIT: Well after reading Dallas is also one of the cities supposed to recieve volte today so that could be the reason for the current troubles.

Tmo has not dropped state employee discounts. I switched from Verizon because they were cleaning me out even with their discounts. Tmo costs me 80/mo less than big red. And the coverage in the sticks with Tmo is not as bad as I thought it would be.
Btw just got my G2 the other day and I am loving this phone!

Yep. this is the most all-around pleasing phone I';ve ever owned.
My dad is retired from the military so I'm going to make him a authorized user so we can get our discount back.
T-Mobile couldn't tell me what 16 Wideband markets were active. Then another T-Mobile told me "although wideband LTE is available in 16 markets every tower in that market may not support it yet. We will continue to improve and you will continue to see advancements in the future! A customers reply "if T-Mobile doesn't have the info on when these cities would be activated why would T-Mobile announce that they are in 16 new cities now. They didn't say it's coming they said we are now in 16 new cities with wideband LTE. This is very unprofessional to say the least. Good point...
I really liked the G2 but the curved design got me with the Flex. The G2 would probably feel small now.
