I updated to FRF72 today and noticed that typing in the BBC iPlayer url now links to an optimized mobile site using Flash. I have been unable to get any pages to load though. Can anyone else try it?
I'd be interested to know if this is only for the latest update. I'd also like to know what the quality is like once it's live!
Just thought you guys might like to know
Re: BBC iPlayer weblink now live for Android...FRF72 only??
Pretty sure this was also in frf50 as well. Noticed it the other day. As you found videos don't seem too play though either over 3g or wifi which is a shame.
Cant get the video on beta.bbc.co.uk/beta to work either. Haven't tried a PC yet.
Same here... page loads but no cigar!
FRF72
It doesn't allow you to even TRY and load up the stream without WIFI, whereas mobile streams on other devices allow streaming on either. I have my suspicions that these streams are going to be much better quality than we have seen with any apps...
Have you tried switching to desktop mode instead of android?
That would be pointless as it just plays unoptimised, stuttery full flash streams. The promised optimised streams for Android devices should be much higher quality - hopefully as good as on iPhone.
Won't let me because it knows I am not in the UK. I even tried spoofing my location, but no cigar.
Just to confirm - it is working now. Stream is VERY good quality, much better than the jerky video when viewing full site. Its also nice and loud.
Best if you leave your browser settings at default NORMAL font size and MEDIUM zoom, otherwise the stream seems to glitch and become unwatchable if you exit the browser.
Very happy with the quality, much better than other devices with mobile streams, probably on a par with iPhone (although higher resolution of Nexus is slightly less forgiving).
Makes Myplayer/Beebplayer streams look like a load of crap....they'll still be handy for conserving data over 3G though

This is just an idea I have been thinking about.. How about an app or a tweak so that the youtube app thinks its on wifi meanwhile its actually using the 3g... is that possible?
I have a feeling that T-Mobile's 3G can't quite keep up with most YouTube streams. Sprint and VZW are the only real 3G providers in the US unfortunately
I wouldn't be so quick to say that. the G1 handles pretty good quality streams through others apps such as the weather channel app and a few other entertainment apps that have very high quality streams compared to Youtube over 3G. With google rolling out higher quality (HD) support on their website, they should be offering the same quality on mobile devices.
lol i suggested this in the irc channel. yeah, the 3g speeds are very fast and load regular quality videos MUCH faster than they play. i would say it could definately handle the high quality videos. just have someone edit the program so u can toggle between regular links and links with "&fmt=18" at the end.
i thought i read somewhere that the over wi-fi the youtube videos are more hi-def..
guess that's obvious though
i wish they come up with something like mixtube like the iphone~~it can allow user to select the qualities of video either in 3g or wifi~~it stream the video in to internal memory~~and can be play offline ~

you can actually choose the qaulity of some videos on Vtap...go to m.vtap.com...unlike the 'wikitap' application you can actually view the videos from the site

Doesnt seems to work here in the Netherlands... (I guess its america only... )
So ive noticed that there is a new (maybe old) feature on YouTube when i access from my PC for watching vids in high(er) quality...since it is YouTube that is offering this option does anyone know if we will be able to watch Vids in higher quality from our G1's??? they are still very choppy (opinion)

not sure if you are aware of this, but youtube plays at a higher resolution if you are connected via wifi vs 3g/edge.

ya ive tried and noticed a slight difference but wifi connection is not always available to me...
if you've only noticed a slight difference, then the video you are watching was low quality before it even made it to youtube
The higher quality option within the standard Youtube site utilizes h.264 with AAC.
As far as I know the G1 uses only the old standard .FLV through its built-in player when using WIFI.
When running on EDGE or 3g the G1 Youtube player player connects to the mobile .3gp stream.
The iPhone on the other hand uses the h.264 stream when wifi is connected, or the .3gp stream when in EDGE or 3G coverage (although downloading of the higher quality stream is available through the device with MXtube.
I own the two devices and will be doing a few comparison videos in a week or so. It is interesting that no reviewer has commented on the fact (or what I believe to be a fact) that the Youtube viewer on the iPhone is a lot nicer to use and watch on the whole, despite Google owning Youtube. Really they should have offered the best mobile Youtube experience on the G1.
One GOOD point about the use of .FLV streams is that they load a LOT faster. The same stream in h.264 on my iPhone can take many seconds to buffer - even with my 10mbps broadband connection - where the same clip on the G1 buffers almost instantaneously. I suspect that Youtube throttles their h.264 streams (for reasons best known to themselves) since I have no problem streaming the BBC's lovely h.264 iPlayer streams.
I suspect it is HTC who actually made the Youtube app, and that it will be improved, or even replaced with the Cupcake release.
Another problem which is slightly off topic and will NOT be improved with updates is that the G1's loudspeaker is vastly inferior to the iPhone 3G's (though much better than the pathetic iPhone 2G speaker).
Sound quality for me is very important when I'm watching videos on my device, and as I've swapped and changed between my G1 and iPhone over the past couple of weeks I've found the speaker quality of my G1 to be a source of great irritation being as it is just so tinny. and annoyingly positioned. Despite being only monaural the iPhone 3G's speaker is one of the best out there.
Me and my friend did a comparison, he has iphone and i have g1 obviously. Both of us are in 3g are and his quality blows g1 away. I agree youtube videos looks pretty horrible on g1 with or without 3g. Speaker is definately behind in the iphone wars also. I have noticed that i pick the videos up much faster than iphone but i would wait for quality. Alot of youtube videos are low quality video's however.
maybe someone can impliment a "force &fmt=18 string" at the end of every youtube video link that gets played to force the quality to be good. but of course, you would have to wait for it to load too, so they should make it an option when you press the "menu" button, maybe they could do something in the next custom firmware for root users.

thts actually a great idea as this code provides excellent resolution on PC's, and i wouldnt mind waiting as stated above i would rather have higher quality...
Has anyone compared the video quality when launching videos from the youtube.com website instead of searching for them with the youtube app? I believe the app normally searches m.youtube.com which has videos that are reencoded with a lower quality.
WOOOOO
so keeping in mind the "&fmt=18" code at the end of the actual vid URL i tried this...
1) go to the actual website www.youtube.com (not app)
2) search/click on any vid, it will ask you if you want to use the "youtube app" or "browser", Click browser
3)once the page opens you will see the flashplayer error, hit the menu button and "go to url" add the code "&fmt=18" to the end of the url then copy
4)go to www.keepvid.com and paste in the blue box then click download
5)scroll down and you will see 2 options to download make sure u click the mp4 high quality link...(not the flv link)
6)WAHHLAAAHH enjoy looks 5times better even though takes 5 times longer lol hope this is worth it for some of you
nice find. you can also use the fmt=22 addition to get HD videos from youtube.
on a side note, i was trying to find an easier way to do this and found that if you look it up in the application, you can just use Menu/share to send it to yourself. before you send it, you can add the URL extension of choice and when you get the email and click on it, it will ask youtube or browser. select youtube and it will play, but it seems to drop the added extension. if we could find a way to make it keep it, it would effectivly remove the need to use www.keepvid.com
and the 720p vidoes (if available) do play very well and look AWSOME on the phone!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pXfHLUlZf4&fmt=22 (the one i d/l to my phone to test a HD video)
I found a way to not have to d/l the video. just copy the link from www.keepvid.com and put it into the Meridian Video Player from the marketplace. It will stream it no problem, including the HD ones... (does not work with the youtube link and the added extension, but at least you dont have to d/l videos anymore)
If there would be a way to use longclick to have an option to open it in Meridian, you could do this probably from the youtube page even. Or if a similar option would be available from the mail app, then you just send the link and click!
Just to comment, but none of the youtube videos are anywhere close to 720p in resolution. They are indeed pretty good for streaming videos but those are probably about 800x480 or something along the lines of that.

The way they do flash is a pretty neat idea. Heh. =)
It is back up on the Market, you can download it there.
someone try hulu -- i can't do it myself at the moment and i'm curious to see how it works(if at all)
Just tested it. Gotta say.
It's bad.
The pinch to zoom is horrible and I don't care if they can play flash. I'll wait for Froyo. Lol. Stock browser seems to be the best for me so far. Haha.

I agree, not running the way it does on the HD2. I will wait till the official beta release of flash 10.1 mobile!
It's nice, and playing flash is great, but it's pretty choppy.
I'll stick with Fennec for now, I can wait for an official Flash release.
Haven't tried pinch zoom, but flash playback worked flawless for me on tmo 3g. loaded up thedailyshow.com and was able to watch a full episode without an issue
Why don't they have this running like it was on my T-Mobile Dash 3G? This is garbage. No flash in the browser. Only flash videos. For example, Strong Bad Emails loads up on my Dash as it would on my PC, but with Skyfire for Android, all I get are those damn boxes with question marks in them. This is a huge let down. Not at all what I expected from Skyfire. As far as I'm concerned, this is fail. Especially with true Flash support around the corner from Adobe. Skyfire had a chance to beat them to the punch here, and they failed. Embarrassing if you ask me.
Doesn't seem to work with all flash videos but its still pretty quick. Anyone know of a good way to test this cloud speed compared to any other browser?
After trying it out for a few minutes i figured out that it does load most videos. I cant check hulu since im a canuck thought. sometimes you simply need to refresh the page and it will find the video. i also found that if you load up the video and it just shows a white box it will always freeze at 25%. This is easily fixed by backing out and reloading the video. Whenever i saw a screenshot of the video while it loaded, it always loaded full.
sites tried and all worked.
crackberry.com
ign.com
xvideos.com ( hey... its strickly educational!)
I cannot actually tell whether this is using the cloud as claimed or not.
For example, using opera mini and visiting what's my ip will show an Opera ip confirming that your days is traveling via opera and is bring compressed etc.
Skyfire doesn't - it shows my ip and renders almost identical to the stock browser. Pages do seem to load a but quicker but that could just be because I'm expecting them to.
maybe I'll run netstat and see whether skyfire actually connects to a skyfire server when rendering a normal page..

No need, I can tell you the answer:
All web pages/normal browsing is done on the device, and is rendered using webkit, and not through a proxy, a la Opera. This is the same reason videos can't be displayed inline. The only time the cloud is used is for transcoding video. If you were to watch a netstat while watching a flash video, you'd see your device connecting to Skyfire's servers.

That's pretty crap. One of Skyfire's attractions was that it worked like Opera Mini but rendered pages better. If its just the stock browser essentially with the ability to watch flash videos then it's of little value.

In my opinion, it doesn't work any worse than the stock browser, so it's still worth using. You're still getting the ability to watch flash videos(which has worked well in my experience), plus you get sleeker tabbed browsing and easy user agent switching right in the toolbar.
The only Flash Video I have been able to get to play are the ones on the sites pre-bookmarked on the Stock Skyfire Homepage. When it doesn't work, I get the Video popup, click on it. The video loads, looks like it starts to buffer and then, instead of playing it reads something to the effect of, Content not available for your device. We're sorry for the Inconvenience.
I haven't tested a lot of sites but no Hulu, no YouPorn, and worst of all, no Sirius Satellite Radio, like i could do on WinMo a year ago.
On the plus side, its nice to have the full Google Voice site available on the phone and Google Wave seems to be rendering nicely.
Great start, flash works good for me on tmo 3g. Videos look great. Rendering is good and quick. Like others said pinch to zoom needs work, but this is now my second favorite browser behind HTC sense browser.

Gametrailers - Doesnt
Espn - Works

Yeah, I tried it on the daily show as well, and it worked great. Due to the way this is set up, it'd be impossible for them to cover every site. I noticed they do have a 'report non-working video' option in the menu, so people may want to try using that to help improve the service.
I noticed that you can pinch to zoom and with two fingers still on the screen you can scoll around the page.
Full-featured browser (Uzard) support flash
Similar speed and Opera 10
Please forgive my poor English

Individual Test experience: play video, support WIFI hotspot; can upload / download files; most important thing is can quickly . . . . . . . BUG: prone to dropped calls, I do not know whether use the connection (network) related?
All in all; is a powerful browser
download experience will know..
This browser is very good better than skyfire.plays flash 10 videos in full screen its stable tabbed browsing favorites superfast( close to opera 10 )
i gotta mention that the videos are a bit laggy but then again its still in beta
Really recommend to try this browser and share your feelings about it with us
I have to say, although I have barely used this new browser, I am very impressed with what I have experienced so far.
Excellent job.
It's similar to Mach5 Web, is there anything to do with it?
I like the browser. It will play Hulu videos. The only thing I don't like is that it detects videos and plays them in its own player. In its own player the videos are playing normal. If for example a site has a video ad then the clip you want to watch, the ad opens in the player then the clip stays in the browser and is very slow. If you try a video with Hulu, you will see what I mean.
Just to compare: Skyfire is blocked with Hulu, Opera seems to work but needs Flash 10
Brill
Fantastic - must be a catch somewhere. If i had to pay for this I would. Only issue so far is TVcatchup.com - won't play vids because it says i'm non UK - but i am. Any woraround for this?
Good browser only thing is that if video is detected it work like a charm
But if not you can't even watch the video it is very slow and you got now sound ...
So the only thing that should be improved is the video detecting mode.
Here is the website: uzard.com/en/main/main.asp
does it have multitouch? because if not, why should someone change fromopera 10 when it's so similar to it?
_edit_
the download is the P version... the H version should be a better choice? am i right? like opera mini vs. mobile.

Well for example if you go to youtube. And you select a video you get:
Video detected do you want to watch it now. You press ok and you get the video full screen in Uzardwebs own player. As I already said this works about 60% of the sites sometimes it don't work.
And this is not opera this is just a complete different browser. So like you got opera, skyfire and Uzardweb.
Pretty fast and most of the sites I tried worked without issues. Much better than skyfire, but still not in the vicinity of opera mobile 10. Got a lot of connection errors, but that is to be expected considering it's still in beta. Scrolling is pretty bad, but at least I always got the desktop version of the webpage(especially irritating with opera). Gonna keep an eye on this one for sure!
I tried it just now..
Flash ,Browsing works for me without issues
Good Work
Best Regards
REALLY NICE ! Videos are working very well and speedly ! ANd not only on Youtube : all flash in working great !
Simply very fast !
Already love it !
Ps : skin editable by open the exe file on pc, but it's about 1000 files to change ...
also works with megavideo. although beta, is certainly one of the best around.
Tx a lot for this tip ! Wouldn´t have found it on my own.
It´s the first browser that fully works with my online aviation weather planning program "Skyview". Also shows iGoogle-page fully and clickable. Videos work nicely (with sound)
Although beta, seems to have good potential to beat skyfire, maybe once even opera.
The only pain ita is that it doesn´t save pwds and that rotation has to be done manually. Will try now to add it to rotation in BsB .........
Will have a close look on further devs of this nice browser.
Once again: Tx for hinting

Just wanted to let everyone knows that playon works great on honeycomb, even though it's not officially supported yet on it, I bought the premium license cause I had the basic one and to my surprise, everything streams and works great, hulu, Netflix and so much more, local wifi and remote wifi too.
I hope they will update it soon to support honeycomb with higher definition and better bitrate. But for now I love it, plus there is a plugin like tv show stream that pulls all shows and stream them.
What is the app for? Any link?
Edit: got it! Cool stuff, I'll give it a try!
I have a play on subscription and i can view all the titles but when i click to view video, it says failed to load

I use PlayOn and even though the video quality is so-so and the videos take awhile to buffer it does work for me.
just got an email from Fred at playon support and honeycomb support with better quality is coming soon
PlayOn will currently work for Honeycomb, but we are working on changes that will improve the quality. As Honeycomb hasn't been out that long, we have had to adapt, and this should be out in the public soon.
Please let us know if you have any other questions.
Thank you for using PlayOn!

I paid for the premium support too. I sure appreciate how good their tech support it. They usually respond very quickly.
I paid for a one month sub to try it out but I found that I like Plex more. Just a personal preference. It would be awesome if PlayOn & Plex could be combined.
i think that once flash gets better and smoother on android, the picture quality will be better from playon cause it uses flash, i have it on my ipad2 and it runs smoothly and great image quality, also on remote wifi too, which plex couldnt on my pc
