City Caller ID (free old app - same as payware CityID) - Droid Incredible Themes and Apps

I rooted and uninstalled CityID. Between the force nag and then the ridiculous monthly price I got rid of it. But I kinda liked the feature so I found an old thread about City Caller ID which was a one man app which was sued by a large company to make $2.99 month from CityID.
It works great and its free!

Niiiiiiice...Good find....Works great.

works like a champ awesome find!

Awesome find, dude! Probably won't use it, but looks great.

Thanks OP!
Awesome

will i get sued for using this app?

Negative...

Only if you email cityid and tell them I think you should let them know and see what happens.

Recommended settings for this app. Click on it in your launcher first and scroll down to font size and set it to small then click space from bottom and click bottom high. leave the font default. Works perfect. City Id can suck it. Someone wanna recompile to 2.1?

Do you have to be rooted to use this? I can't get it to open.

No. Root is not needed.
If you mean you can't install the apk after downloading, try navigating to the file with Astro and opening it from there.

Astro or apkinstaller apps will install this.

I am using this app and it seems like a great replacement for CityID. However the text placement of the City is off. It appears along the bottom of the screen where there is either the "slide down to unlock" text or the answer and decline buttons on an incoming call.
Is there a way to put the text where the CityID text was?
Thanks for such a great find!.

In the settings you change the placement of the text. I have it set to bottom middle-high and it's perfect.

9th post of this thread.....

Isn't that still on the 1st page of the thread....

Great find thanks

can not download says that the Droid X doesn't support the file.

I'm sorry if this is OT, but does anyone know why we don't have proper Caller ID (i.e., you see the phone number + the name of the person that owns the number). I know it would be pointless for the most part, I just never understood that restriction.

Speed dial APP for Nexus one?!

I used to use "Speed dial" on my Mytouch and I have tried it. I also tried the native "direct call" shortcut and they are too small to see.
My phone freaked out and went on the fritz. I go a new one today and that whole "back up my apps" thing didn't work.
I HAD an app on the N1 that let me put like a 2x2 widget/icon on the home screen and when you pushed it it said "Call, Message,Email, etc". I cannot for the life of me find this in the Market. any ideas?
Thanks in advance!
P.S. Any cut only makes 1x1 icons as well.
..canĀ“t help you, but I would like to have that too - a nice speed dial app for N1
Bump. Anyone have any ideas?
The easiest way to speed dial, is to create shortcuts on the desktop for specific contact phones - the shortcut will also get the contact's image and name, so it easy to work with.
Then, one click, and it calls the contact, without any extra menus/questions.

Please re-read my post. I am currently using that method, but on the Nexus one the icons are so small because of the resolution of the screen. It makes them very hard to see. I am looking for a 2x2 option instead of the default 1x1. Thank you for your reply!
try NubDial from the market.
i am using that on my N1.
Thanks. Looks cool, but not exactly what I'm after.
I personally love the speeddial function in acontacts, but if you already found what you're looking for then that's good. Still, 2x2 on your homescreen is huge
2 x 2 isn't huge on the Nexus. I think it is the resolution. I had one I was using and my first Nexus one crapped out. I sent it back and Android did not back up all of my apps as had hoped so...no gotta. but still, I haven't found one.
Anyone?
Found an app called "Quickdial". Pretty close to what I wanted. I just wish I could make each contact a link or it operated as a widget. Cool app though.
Old School Speed Dialer
You could also try Old School Speed Dialer. With it, you speed dial by just bringing up the dialer, entering the speed dial shortcut number, then hitting call. Saves on home screen space.

We just released a speed dial widget, Sign. Sign will let you you call or text any of your contacts by simply drawing a gesture (signing) directly from your home screen. It also prevents misdials/incidental calls which are more prevalent with direct dial icons. There's more information here.
Anyways, give it a shot and let us know what you think.
Speed Dial in market from CRinUS makes a larger icon you might be able to see. Kinda blurry if you look at it up close though

SMS on Android

Hello chaps
I've just got an HTC Legend and love pretty well everything about it ...except...
The SMS side of things is awful - you access it via the "Messages" widget, not sure if this is a native Android app or an HTC add-on but it's rubbish. All you get is a list of messages you've sent and received with no indication as to which is which and messages from the same person are bunched together into one on the list - it's just awful and there seems to be no way to change it so just an "inbox" view or whatever.
In addition, when you compose an SMSthe text entry box statys tiny and docks at the bottom so yuo get the recipient at the top and the message at the bottom with a big space in between unless the message is really long.
I'm amazed how bad it all is. Is there a good market replacement for it?
Cheers
K
Check out Handcent. Not only does it make the list more similar to an iPhone-esque style, but adds a bunch of extra features like colored trackball alert if you're rooted, or a Quick Reply function, where you can quickly send a message to anyone using your hardware buttons.
Is this some kind of joke!? April 1st has passed!

Handcent is the best IMHO....
There should be a messaging application you are using... not just the widget.
I would have to agree that Handcent is a pretty decetn app!
is it possible to disable the default sms proggy and let handcent be the only one?

Yeah, It should just be a matter of going into the stock Messaging app. On the main screen that shows all your threads, press menu, go to Options/Settings (whichever one is there, cba to look at my phone at the moment) then just disable notifications. That means it should never bother you again (unless you want it to - in which case just re-enable that)

possible to get sms preview on the lock screen instead of the puzzle pieces?

just wondering? lock screen seems lack of features and would like to enhance
I downloaded app called SMS Popup. Its pretty cool. When you get an incoming SMS it turns the screen on and shows you the txt, you can then close, delete, or reply right from there.

I agree with you! Very customizable.
Do either of those pop up ONLY when locked?
The iPhone's popups are truly a PITA, I love the way Android does it when I'm using it... But I wish there would be some sort of popup preview when locked.

It shows up on the home screen like iphone does, only little better, you can quick reply right from the window.
It reminds me of BiteSMS for jailbroke iphones.

I have heard that, not tried it yet. Gonna roll with SMS Popup for a week or two then try handcent.
So far what I like about SMS Popup is the fact that it gives you the popup with the quick reply, close, delete option, but it doesnt interfere with or override the default built in messaging app (which I kind of like too).
I tested out a Droid last November for 30 days. And after using an iphone for 2 years one of the biggest gripes I had about android was the way you got almost no notification of an incoming sms, except for a tiny little LED. If I had known about handcent or sms popup I may have never taken the Droid back within the 30 day window. I was missing tons of txt messages because of it.
i have a request can someone post a picture of the puzzle pieces when a message comes

Its the standard lock screen but its made to look like a jigsaw puzzle. You have to slide a yellow puzzle piece over to the right into the blank space where it belongs. And on the yellow puzzle piece, it tells you how many missed messages you have. Like a 2 with an envelope. I think its a little cheesy myself. I'm sure if you google it, there's a picture of it somewhere.

any hopes to get a S2U2 style setup for the lock screen? I loved it on WinMo, but love this device so much more than to be stuck with that ancient O/S anymore.....
EDIT - Lock 2.0 Demo and Full are iPhone style.... but with no SMS preview and all that good stuff that S2U2 is known for, so I wait!
Any way to get google voice sms messages to show on the lock screen?

I honestly like this feature. I do a lot of texting and it's nice to be able to unlock and go directly to the sms app.
It would be nice if there were similar puzzle pieces for other notifications though.
I actually like the little puzzle piece. I just wish they had a piece for everything. Like one for missed calls. One for voicemail. Something like that.

they do have different puzzle peices for different things...ill try to take some screenshots...post back soon.

missed phone calls are orange and placed higher
missed sms are green and placed lower
if both missed phone call and sms they will both show on the screen and you can choose your puzzle piece

But not at the same time though, as in if you had a new email AND a new text message, it won't show TWO puzzle pieces at the same time, and you choose which one you want to "unlock" - now THAT would be cool!

I uninstalled them because they both are somewhat buggy (SMS Popup notified me twice, even with the default app's settings shut off, and then if I was already in the texting app, Handcent didn't seem to be able to know that I had looked at it)
I'll just deal with it until Samsung releases a fix.

all credit goes to those stated in the link where i got this theme from...all i did was port it to the mesmerize

ill have to make an edit then...is it all dark or all light...the text?
the text is all black, blends in with the background. In the messaging app, the bubbles aren't quite black, so you can just BARELY see the text. White text in both of these scenarios would make this look just about perfect in my eye.

Same issue still... For example:
1.) Press the "Menu" soft key (from a home screen)
2.) Press the "More" option
Can't view text
Also, in notifications, it's white text on a gray background. Any possibility of making the text a little more visible?

It's all covered in this reference; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=831715
For the secondary menu i'ts under "expanded.menu" or something like that, for some reason that one won't work if called with @/color so what you actually need is the original code that was there (something like "?SmallTextInverse", and just remove the "inverse" from the end, and that will change the text color properly.)
For notifications, you'll have to edit XML located within the Layout folder, i'ts listed in that guide too. Let me know if you need help!

The Unicorn SMS App

I'm looking for an SMS app that doesn't seem to exist, so I thought I'd post here in case there's a cool project I'm missing or some interesting ideas anyone has to share.
What I'd Like:
An SMS app with the following features:
-Both SMS and MMS work reliably and consistently
-Material Design compliant
-Swipe to return to conversation list
-Quick reply
-Avatar images in the conversations
What I've Tried and Why I'm not a Fan:
-Hangouts: No swipe or quick reply, the workflow/2-tab system in inefficient and ugly
-Textra: Weird font and no avatars in the conversations
-QKSMS: It bugs out on my phone...it thinks I have on-screen buttons (I have capacitive) and it puts a giant bar at the bottom of the screen, but stuff I can't see or interact with goes under that bar.
-Evolve: So much going on, it's so busy and sort of laggy and clunky even on my brand new Droid Turbo.
-Chomp: It keeps yelling at me that it can't find my APN settings even though every other app including Textra made by the same company works fine. Also only partially Materialized. OCD.
_Google Messenger: No quick reply or swipe.
-Go: Too much stuff for my taste
-Verizon Messages: Super ugly.

try YAATA
i think it meets (almost, if not) all the above mentioned :good:
I use YAATA and love it
YAATA would be perfect if it would turn Wi-Fi back on after sending a MMS
Thanks guys, I'll have to check that one out. Just got it installed and I'm playing with all the settings. When I initially opened it the font and pictures were huge and I felt like I was holding a Fisher Price toy but it has a ton of settings it looks like so I'm feeling a lot better now that I've played with a few of them. I figured there was a great app I was missing, so thanks for the help guys!

There's a fix for this in the advanced settings of the app
Someone pointed out the navigation bar fix option to me over in the G+ community for the app, but it didn't work in my case. Nothing changed.
Never heard of qksms before. Absolutely love it. Thanks xda and all members for suggesting approximately 70% of all my installed apps. ?
Indeed...actually QK started working for me again after I rebooted my phone. Not sure why I didn't think of that. I originally found out about that here too, and YAATA is actually really nice also. QK is still prettier, but YAATA seems to have fewer bugs right now.
