Hey guys. Just spent the last few hours creating an easy way to root your Evo, as well as unlock nand protection and install a permanent custom recovery.
Big big thanks and credit goes to toast, koush, and any other developers working on HTC Evo 4G hacks and mods!
Jiqqaman has been working hard to fix what I couldn't in my script and he has a working gui for windows which can do it all for you. Head over to this link to check it out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=6878393#post6878393
Nice work man.
awesome work!
although I would love to see a Linux script if possible
i am glad you didn't make this til today it forced me to learn adb on my mac lol
Haha I guess since a Linux script its already being asked about in the first post I will get to work on it first thing tomorrow.
Also, its uploading as slow as possible so prepare to wait for awhile, sorry bout that.
Oh and for the record, as my device is already rooted and everything, and I cannot get nandriod working, I was unable to test it completely, although everything outputs ok. So just post here if theres any problems.
F it. As i've only used the unrevoked root, and just have been too burnt out lately on android to do the full root process....
ill take the first shot at this...?
bring the pain.
About 37 minutes left on the upload. While we wait, im gonna thread jack myself and see if any of you can help me out hehe.
After doing the full nand unlocking and everything, I cant create a Nandroid backup. I would post a logcat if that command worked. it seems that not everything is unlocked, but i have access to it when im not in recovery. Any ideas on fixes?
I have been using ROM manager and using clockwork recovery and actually replaced my recovery now that i had nand there is a thread here
Rom manager is nice for flashing and managing your roms, but it wont root or unlock your nand for you. Posting link soon, check the first post in about 5 minutes.
Now available for download here: http://mast3rpyr0.homelinux.com/android/EVOEasyRoot.zip
I will post any updates to the batch file here, as well as update this zip so you dont have to download the whole thing again. Hoping it works the first time though
Mast3rpyr0, I am interested in featuring this method at http://www.AndroidPolice.com - many people expressed desire for a one-touch root.
Feel free to ping me at http://www.androidpolice.com/contact.
In the meantime, I'm downloading it but it's very slow and cuts off every few seconds - the whole download says it would finish in 2 hours. Can you perhaps upload to megaupload in the meantime?
Thanks for your contribution! Comments like "if enough people want it then ill spend the time to make a Linux / Mac OS X script too" make me really happy and proud to be part of this community!

Oh man is my network that slow? I will get it up on megaupload at once, and there will be another mirror in a little bit as well. Not sure if ill keep megaupload updated though. Go head and spread the word, just be sure to link back to this post as this is where any updates or help will be posted. I only wish i could do more for the community. What I would give for the skillz of the devs. Thanks for your interest.

Sounds like you didn't flash the custom recovery
-------------------------------------
Sent via the XDA Tapatalk App
I will try this when I get home today. I haven't unlocked it yet so we will see how out goes
I flashed Koush's custom recovery, which did nandroid backups before unlocking nand. afterwards however after flashing it permanently it would not do the backup, nor could flash the update.zip of the recovery.
This should make it easier for a lot of people. Below is a Rapidshare mirror.

I would like a Linux script also!

Sorry i cant work on this anymore because i lost defy. Sorry guys
Hello guys,
first of all, i am no where near a developers level, but being somehow geeky at linux and android stuff, i am trying to port MiUi ROM for motorola milestone to motorola defy. I havent succeeded till now, but i will try my best to bring MiUi goodness to Defy phone users. I worked all night last night, trying to do different stuff every time hoping it works, but everytime i do anything, all i get is the big a$$ motorola logo. I need some developer's help on doing this.
The main problem has been motorola's locked bootloader, which does not let me flash updated zip files, unless i flash the original sbf, log into motoblur, root it, install recovery, boot into recovery and finally install. And trust me, i did all of that like 10-15 times last night. Even my phone must be pissed off at me right now cuz of that If there is an easier way, please, please please let me know.
I have tried everything from replacing apps, extracting boot.img, replacing framework files, installing directly, using kitchen for htc to automatically replace and almost eveything i could think of, and still no success. I really need help from someone who can debug kernels and sneak into bytecodes.
You are really welcome to help me if you think that you could help in any ways. Please shoot me an email at zed [at] wireshock.com (i will usually reply asap), or add me in gtalk admin [at] wireshock.com so that we can talk about it. Lets all hope that we can see miui in defy some day. Wish me luck
Edit: Here is the final thing i came up with, if anyone wants to examine, here is the link -> Click Here
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS WILL NOT WORK! IT WILL NOT BOOT! THIS IS FOR DEV'S ONLY!
March 29
Update (9:40 AM): Another night without success. I am trying my best to make it work. Few people have contacted me about this, and some have helped a lot. Thanks to them. I contacted eugene_373 about this, lets hope he replies fast.
Update (11:48 AM): @KSubediTweet My Defy no longer works... So, not much help I can give. <- Eugene's defy doesnt work, need some devs who work for defy.
Update (5:54 PM): Me and Landroid from xda worked for almost the whole day trying to make it work. No success till now, but i think we are closer than before. If anyone finds a way to run recovery without booting somehow, please let me know, that will help a lot. And be sure to say thanks to Landroid for helping me out a lot.

Update (10:53 AM): Spent the last week trying to figure out a way to run recovery without booting which would help me save 80% time. Need some more Dev's help. I have tried contacting some chinese miui developers so that they could help me on porting the rom. Waiting for reply.

Update (8:14 PM): After few days of being idle, i am back to the track. Now as i have 2nd init, pre boot menu and everything i need to work, i will try as fast as i can. And racca pointed out some stuff i didnt know before, so i am kind of positive about getting it to work this time.
P.S. All times are MST (GMT -7)
I don't have much technological knowhow to add, but good luck and its great that someones finally making the effort, so don't give up!

Thanks, ill try my best.
Eugene made some adaptations on system recovery to apply update.zip. I don't know exactly how that works but maybe help you.
link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=995131
Thanks a lot for the link, if i can get the keyfile, i think i can make an update.zip for the recovery and can open clockworkmod from default recovery. Ill try it
Edit: or i can sign the zip file so that i can flash it from default recovery.
Dexter_nbl did the port of sense for us. In his rom he used a file on sdcard to boot on recovery. Like, if the file called recovery_mode exist on sdcard execute the script to boot up on recovery....this helped a lot!

That might have worked if the room booted at all, the problem here seems to be with some hardware driver that is preventing the phone from booting. Only if someone who knows what is preventing it from booting could help me out, i would work on fixing it somehow.
good to see a new project coming up.
got a bit quiet here in the past week, devs probably waiting for motos official froyo release.
anyways, kepp us updated on your progress and good luck!

That ideia is for you access your system recovery to restore your system without flash a sbf, get root, install system recovery (that take a long time). This way you can try more things. Dexter call the script to verify the file on sdcard in beginning of the process of boot, i dont know how but if you want see take a look the first version of his ROM.
i dont think you can sign the update packages. maybe you should try to ask eugene how this whole cookie cutter thing works

would be awesome to get miui on defy...

I have contacted miui developers to help me out. Waiting for reply now. Lets hope that we can bring miui to defy as soon as possible. Need help from some devs.
What do you mean go to recovery without booting? Without booting to Android you cannot use any other means to write to the Filesystem, so how would you do that? You can't replace the recovery that's installed with the phone, so I don't really see how that would be possible.
Recovery without booting is possible through charge-only-mode, but no one is capable to do it for Defy. And probably it is possible in Defy Sense ROM, if you read the thread. But I did not tried.
an option would be to look for an exploit in the recovery, that allows us to make something like open recovery on the milestone... i would ask the devs from openrecovery
There is the way using the second boot used on milestone (2nd-init) and the way used by Dexter in Sense ROM;
- included ClockWorkRecovery custom edition for this rom
• - Do NOT install the apk release, or it will ruin bootup of sense.
• - activate Recovery by putting an empty file in the root of your sdcard called "recovery_mode"
• content can be anything or empty, just make sure filename is correct.
• - reboot, and it will load into recovery.

Ok if anyone can help me out on this. I would like to put a list of things you Need to do AFTER rooting your Inspire. Long story short I looked around countless of thread and find bits of pieces of things to do after your root.
Just would like to start something where this is a list to what you need to do after your done. So if ANYONE can help me out and may help others out with just the same ?s. This would be awesome. I know there are somethings like Titanium back up, ROM Manager, ClockWork. But if anyone can help put this together. Thank you.
Also if you have any videos that you can share that shows how to install something(because who does not like a Tut Video lol) rather it be a ROM or making a NANDOID(if thats right) backup if you need or not maybe just some how To's because I had to Root back to stock and this [ROM] AT&T Stock ROM - Sense [Unroot] and the user helped me out, thanks again friend, very informative.
thanks again for any help hints and walk throughs.
I for got to add this in once your done rooting you can check it with super user to see if everything is good. Also I found these guys to become very helpful major Props to them.. ANDROID Applications (How-To Backup & Restore) Titanium Backup just look that up on youtube or something
Not trying to be mean, but did you even take a look at the guide? I could be wrong, but I vaguely remember there being a video posted there.
As for what you do after you root your phone, you can flash a rom if you want... I mean its really a subjective question..
yes I looked just any video dealing with the inspire I hoping that this thread could kind of be one place for some ?s I see all over the place but its worth a shot to see if it turns out that way but for others that see the title of this thread could get some help with out ppl being "mean" for a ?s thats been asked and yes there is a search bar but...hey not everyone use it as much as we reply with "There is a search bar you know" or any other remark..
So Im hoping with that said that this thread could help other out with some Very common ?s. Because other user dont see a thread that looks like what they are looking for so others make a thread asking ?s that has been asked many times so with in time maybe this could help a lot of others.. Idk we will see..
Also after seeing a lot of videos about this there is so many different things that are said to do or to get and its get confusing and I can see how it could throw some user off..Because what through me off is the Making of a Nanadoid back up.. I kind of still dont know how lol.
That would be why the guide is stickied at the top its meant to be a one stop shop for "new rooters". There is about 20 pages of questions and answers, and many of the members will stop by and answer including devs.
And there a four videos posted in the opening post, one for the hack kit (outdated) and one for bubbys root method. There are also two other videos one that shows you how to recover from a soft brick, and how to flash a rom (including a nandroid back up).
The main reason for the guide to be stickied was to elevate the general forum, from getting a lot of redundant questions, which it has helped.
To answer your question, after you root you really don't have to do anything. As I said before you can flash a rom and make a nandroid backup, which is covered in the guide. You can flash a radio, which there is also a link to the thread for this. You can flash a theme for a rom, which is generally the same as flashing a rom. You can install market apps that require root access.
The only thing that "would/should be" required after rooting would be flashing a recovery ie. clock work mod recovery, which is covered in both rooting processes.
As I said before I am not trying to be mean or rude, but that is kind of why the guide was stickied.
I got you chief.. And I dont take it anything personal its the internet LOL! but If you dont mind can you past the link about making that nanadoid back up. and btw your not the only one with videos more then four. But yeah I hear about the same ?s being asked and yea your thread is like 300+ with a lot lol.. but Idk was hoping that this could be more organized I see that you have a lot of fixes and radios..etc..good stuff though.
I hope Im not steeling you thunder for post..

A nandoid back up is as simple as this...
Assuming you're rooted, and haven't flashed cwr yet...
Download ROM manager
Open it and choose flash clockwork recovery.
Once that's done, choose backup current rom
Provide a name for your backup
Let it reboot and do the backup.
If you already have clockwork recovery flashed, you can reboot into recovery and select the appropriate menu choice, though if you initiate the backup directly from cwr, I don't think it let's you choose the name.

That's correct, but the backups are stored in /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/$datecode$ It's very easy to rename them after the fact.... so long as you do it within a reasonable time period.
you can also do it from rom manager and name the backup.
sweet.. I just re rooted like an hour ago just re setting some stuff up
After a lot of frustration and just a bit of sheer luck, Im 100% positive I've found a way for people to root their sk4g as well as modify the recovery so that they dont have to do adb (im pretty adb retarded). I came up with this method after i had soft bricked my phone and couldnt figure out how to put CWM on the phone after i Odin'd back to stock. All i did was take the correct recovery from the cwm, replace both recoveries in the 1clickrootexploit and run, reboot phone, install Rom Manager from marketplace.
Credit goes to Noobn1 and the guys for creating the 1clickrootexploit, and Krylon360 for the CWM.

I actually didnt. I hunted around on the forums for, I guess i just overlooked it.
Haha it's all good, I never actually released it, just kept posting it for everyone who was having issues. Good work, glad to see more people releasing stuff :]
Thanks man. I was hoping that Revolution would stick this thread in his bible so that way people know right off the bat that as soon as they are rooted they have the binary files for the recovery all set and just need to download Rom Manager from the market
Actually, you don't need (and I don't recommend) Rom manager at all, it just ends up having issues with our CWM versus the build in Rom manager that has issues.
I was wondering why we've never seen a TWRP build from TeamWin for the TF101. I remember when the tablet came out that a few team members had the device and there was talk of builds upcoming for our device. Then there was the long break and TWRP2 and everything that happened at TeamWin, finally with 2.1 builds showing up. But there was nothing for our device, while the TF201 and TF301 were getting love.
I pinged dees_troy on twitter and found out some interesting info:
The Recovery Partition is only 5MB on the TF101
The Kernel needs to be less than 3MB to leave enough room for TWRP, meaning a custom recovery kernel.
Without a device in a devs hands, we'll not see TWRP
https://twitter.com/Dees_Troy/status/216631211366424576
https://twitter.com/Dees_Troy/status/216631556863836160
If I didn't rely on mine daily, I'd send it over for some builds, but that is not feasible for me.
Maybe we can get a developer to notice and build this, because I'd love to see a refined touch recovery like TWRP. I mean with the kernel though, how big is it with a stripped down version of it?
Darn shame about the partition sizes, those can be moved around.. but that's not a really great fix. I'd compile it and do a tad of bug-fixing since it should be the same process, but I really don't want to mess with partition sizing being too small and stripping recovery down. X.x
I've asked before and pm'ed about being a tester, and if it happens I'll be on top of it!
See, that's one thing Moto did good with their phones. I would have no issues with partitioning being similar, but I think they did go a little over board on what the system got versus what the consumer should be able to use for storage, IMO.
If there was a guide and I knew I could do it without creating to much headache trying to get it right, then I'd start on a similar project. My biggest problem is, I don't know very much about this at all. The last time I did any programming, I was in highschool and was learning C++ and did some PHP coding, but that doesn't apply here. HaHa.
TWRP has a step by step compile from source linux guide
Just the partitioning, I think it would work straight from source pretty well, but considering that the partition is too small that's where it gets tricky

just build it and see what the size is then we might be able to engage one of the kernel devs to help strip stuff out

did the recovery with the clockworkmod recovery thing,
restarted and exectued this website's tutorial to jellybean (start with WWW stuff.androidauthority.com/g2x-p999-t-mobile-cyanogenmod-10-cm10-unofficial-115536)
and then, look like it failed..
this morning, I managed to get back to the recovery boot screen and found that if I press the house icon it show up a menu.. but this menu giving me access to reboot, wipe cache, data or install update.zip (which was supposed to fix my problem) but this menu is blued out and unaccessible..
dunno if it helped..
right now, I am trying to get acces to my phone doing the no battery boot thing but my pc doesnt seem to recognize my phone + I am at work hehe so I am pretty much limited in acces due tu the it protection and firewall stuff
I am gonna try to redo that stuff tonight at home but meanwhile, if any of what I described may give you a clue on how to help me, I really appreciate the effort!

I say you needed to use the g2x android development forums on this site to find a suitable jb rom, not this other site. The one click method isn't very stable, so nvflash is most definitely what you need to try to get working. There are very thorough tutorials on how to get that to work. Do you know which clockwork recovery version you have installed? Should be 5.0.2.0. Once you get home, I suggest you read read read. Do as much research you can to make sure you can follow nvflash instructions to the letter. I know I personally spent about a week researching to make sure I had a solid understanding of the procedure.
I recommend getting nvflash going to get clockwork properly installed, then download a rom from xda, nowhere else. I would even say use a gb rom before trying a jb ...the jb roms are hackfest versions, so they have (from my experience) much poorer battery life, and lack hardware acceleration. Netflix and many 3d games won't work. You can use adampk or mazout's roms but they don't have working radio, i.e. no phone/SMS functionality.

Boot into recovery, there should be an option to format or wipe system. Do that then flash the ROM. It won't boot if you flash it over stock.
Also, use the paranoid android rom found in the development section, same cyanogenmod base but works better.

Ok, wait I think I understand what you're saying now. If you can, pm the op of that thread you used to unbrick. Ask that person if you need some kind of different file in that .zip file to work on your carrier.
I remember having to use that guide to get back to stock. Glad to see you're making progress. I know it can be frustrating when devices get wacky. Good luck!

hehehe sorry, I am not fully used to the right terms so I rather stay in the gray zone by using words like ''thing''
but I can now oficially say I was talking about ROMs
finally, I managed to bring back my phone to the stock mode everything seem to work!
now I can brick it again!
thx for the help!
I began to wonder if it was just a matter of changing APN settings?
