I recently changed from a tp2 to a mytouch..I wanted to know if there was an app that can do that when I connect it to the computer..any tips thanx
If I recall there were some tethering apps in the app store. Most probably require root.
Of course, if you're going to root the device, just go ahead and load Cyanogen's latest mod. It has tethering built in.

so in order to have the tethering app u would have to root it??
Dude, did you even bother to search the market? A quick search on the word "tether" returns multiple apps, some paid, some free, some require root, some don't. Take your pick.
I was just saying that if you DO go the root path and load an alternate ROM like Cyanogen's, tethering is built in.

Pdanet has an awesome tethering app. Theres also EasyTether which is 10 bucks but works great!

I just got my first android phone recently, and I've gotten pretty hooked on Grooveshark.
Unfortunately I have a very limited data plan, and as such I need to be sure it doesn't keep streaming if I accidentally lose my Wifi connection.
Does anyone know of any program that could maintain a blacklist/whitelist of apps that are allowed internet acces, that's also dependent on the nature of the current data connection?
After further searching I found DroidWall
I don't know of an application that meets your specific criteria, but perhaps you could achieve your goal with 'Tasker' . It's not an free app, so I suggest you ask around on its forum first.
Droidwall does it

I use Droidwall, and if I forget and install a new app I go through a "Why doesnt this work" then remember droidwall, open up that app, and it does. There's a widget that lets you toggle the wall on/off. also useful for something that doesnt really need to access the internet, like a game. Lookout might also work, but I havent really dug in to everything it does.
Im new to smartphones. I recently got a DroidX...now I'm hooked. But being new to the technology, I need some help. I don't want to pay Verizon any more money but could really use the 3G HotSpot for work. Ive done the research and want to root my phone...I hear z4root app is excellent!!! Its no longer available on the marketplace, so how do I download it from the web and get it onto my phone and functioning? Please all the info I can get will be usefull.
For the free hotspot, it depends on how u want it to run. (ad hoc or infrastructure mode). Infrastructure is the equivalent of a home wireless router. If you search google for "team black hat wireless hotspot hack" you should probably find what u are looking for.. This allows you to use the Verizon wireless hotspot app for free (disclaimer: this is theft and is technically stealing from verizon so I don't condone this. This is merely just info).
If u don't care about the original app, u can root the phone and search the market for wireless tether for root or barnacle tethering.
As for z4root, google the app, and then download it and use your computer to move it to your SD card. Then you can use a file explorer app (i use astro) to install the .apk file.

Thank you!!! My DroidX is now rooted! Thanks again for the help.
It looks like they (AT&T) removed the option to tether or use my phone as a hot spot! Can someone please help with finding another way around this. I need to use my phone as a modem. My Captivate has been rooted but I dont know wut to do now.
try EasyTether app. you can find it in the market
EasyTether is no longer on market!
I'm looking for the same thing for as close to free as possible. I tried downloading the file off google/android (i can't think if the exact file right nite) but for whatever reason it keeps saying I don't have permission when in reality I'm rooted and have rom manger but running stock everything . Any advise?!?

If you are rooted, most of the froyo roms have tethering and mobile internet access point with them
Maybe you could try market enabler from the market and make it think you have T-Mobile or something cause att blocks out mostly all tethering apps. I read that works although I have T-Mobile and haven't had anything blocked so I have not tested personally.

I have Andromeda 2.1 on my Captivate, and so far as I know, it doesn't have a tethering app preinstalled. I'm going to ask and find out, and a few other questions I have, as soon as I get to the 10 post limit! gah...
Anyway, before I installed Andromeda, I was running the stock ROM rooted with wifi tether from the google code page. The app would run, but I could not connect to it (though I was trying on my Tab). Comes to find out that the wifi tether app creates an ad-hoc network, with the Tab won't connect too. I need to get an AP app. Still working on that solution (though I haven't had much time to test it).
Paragon 5.1 ROM has tethering.

Well, as already said most custom roms have these options built in under Settings > Wireless & Network... But in lieu of flashing an entirely new ROM for one feature, you could simply download barnacle wifi from the market.
In the event that it's not in your market (hadn't heard of carriers being able to remove certain apps from the market) I'm sure you can find the apk (the extension of Android App Installers) via google.
I have a new, unlocked and rooted D2G. I didn't use the stock phone for very long before I installed the Fission Rom. I didn't pay close attention to what was on the phone to begin with. I wasn't thinking clearly; I thought that it would just stay behind and I would have the option to uninstall it once rooted.
I realize most of it is considered bloatware. But I swear I saw a couple things that interested me. I can't remember what they were, though. Does anyone have a screenshot of the app drawer of a stock D2G? Or just a list? It would be much appreciated.

Thank you. Looks like it was Swype and Skype I was after.
Skype I already have downloaded. Swype, I looked for in the market and couldn't find. How can I get it on my phone?
also, this 'mobile 3g hotspot' thing looks interesting. Currently I tether using USB but maybe that is pointless. Is there a way to get this, or a comparable free app?
To use tethering besides VZW stock app, you need root access (which you probably have already). There are various tethering apps available on the Market.
Swype Beta for Android is available on Swype web site.
Wifi Tether is the app I use
Verizon removed these from the market I believe.
Google search "wireless tether for android"
First link, go to the "downloads" tab and download a stable release
Copy to your sd card and launch the file to install.
lost my widgets
I used Titanium Backup to back up my apps to my SD card, and then tried to uninstall the blockbuster app on my Droid 2 Global. It seems like at the same time that the user downloaded apps' widgets stopped functioning, and the phone will no longer create new widgets for the apps that i have downloaded either. Any help?
At about the same time, I used ROM Manager to try to back up my stock ROM, it rebooted my phone both times that I tried it, I don't know if that would have something to do with the widgets? Any help would be much appreciated
Hello,
I was browsing around XDA the other day. I stumbled across the name of an app with a GitHub page. I am trying to remember the name of the app and cannot. It said it would allow root apps to function without actually rooting your phone. Does anyone happen to know what it is called?
I have a Pixel 4xl. I can and have rooted it before. However, even though I hid Magisks and excluded a app for a real casino I got banned. They tried to say it was because I was not able to be geolocated. However, the app confirmed with a message stating my phone was rooted.
I would like to be able to run AdAway without having to allow it to work via VPN. I already have a VPN which I use when I am not playing one of my online casinos. There are also a few more root apps I like. I would like to use them without any worry.
Thank you,
Rocky

Pixel 4xl I ended up finding the app. It was Shizuku. I did not get a change to read all about it when I first heard about it. The page I was viewing almost made it sound like a magisk replacement. Then, my phone died and I couldn't remember what it was called.
I wish there was an app or something that will allow this permissions for apps that need them to work better. However, remain undetectable at the same time. That would be great. There are a few root apps I love to install. However, root is not as popular as it once was to me at least.
that app allows running as adb shell, no root access can be provided.

Only caveat: ROMs available are only Android 7.1
