Joeykrim's Custom Android Application Backup and Removal Update.zip
Disclaimer: Use this at your own risk.
ALPHA version - not very pretty. quick and dirty but its working!
Description:
The default is nothing. If you select nothing, it does nothing. This will ONLY backup and remove the applications manually selected.
This does not effect anything on the /data partition - meaning no data or settings will be changed by using this update.zip
Background:
This will allow stock applications (.apk and .odex) to be backed up to the sdcard (/sdcard/sdx/backup) and removed from the phone (/system/app). If an app is selected to be removed and its already removed, the script will keep going, it will not result in any kind of error or boot loop.
Requirements:
Custom Recovery - Few Suggestions:
[RECOVERY] Permanently replacing your recovery with ClockworkMod Recovery Image
[Recovery] [18-June-2010] RA-evo-v1.7.0.1 - Not compatible because it forces all .zip files to be signed and this online kitchen doesn't java sign the .zip files. In order to stay compatible, please manually sign the .zip file.
Instructions:
Check any combination of boxes below to combine actions into one custom-SDX-update.zip file.
Download this file and put it onto the /sdcard of the phone.
Boot into a recovery mode using a custom recovery (reboot recovery from adb shell or vol down + power).
Select Apply Update.zip and choose the zip.
Reboot.
Let me know if it works, doesn't work, etc. Thanks!
NEW HOST
http://www.joeyconway.me/evo/custom/index.php
Added more applications to the list. If there is an application which isnt on there that you want added, please post it and I'll add it!
To Do List: - Please post what you want added!
Add more safe apps to remove
Add boot animations
Custom Kernels
Themes
Potentially Other ROMS
Moment to Evo you make it happen

Could you add GSD.apk, the sprint_promo apk, and all the stock and newsreader apk's?
Also does this remove the .odex files with the .apk?
Thanks for your work

yes, .odex files are also removed, ive added that to the directions.
i also added everything you mentioned above. for the stock and news apks, i might have missed one but tried to grab them all, i read if they are removed there are sync issues ... haven't heard it confirmed either way so i added a warning.
thanks for the feedback. hope it works? let me know!
Joey, so good to see your skills being applied over here! One quick question, if we use this removal script and select an app that is already removed, will it cause any issues like a bootloop or failure? Or would if just ignore the missing app and move on?

good question. i can add this to my main post.
if you select an app which is already removed, it will attempt to remove it again and when it finds it not there, it will skip over it. will not cause a bootloop or any kind of failure!
update: added a few more requested apps to the list! let me know if there is anything else!
easy as can be, worked great!
Works great to remove not so much putting back unless there is a trick to it. I can't get mail to reinstall or nav

good point!
perhaps i could add a feature that allows apps removed using this method to be restored using this method.
putting back should be simple thru adb. i'd recommend doing it from recovery.
adb shell
cp /sdcard/sdx/backup/Mail.* /system/app/Mail.* (this will copy apk and odex if you're using a ROM with odex)
hopefully that helps! thanks for the feedback!
Will we be seeing some boot anims and custom boot logo's in the kitchen soon?

So here's a question from a n00b
Which mods are permanent and which ones are not? I have Eng bootloader and JF r30 1.3 which of course gave me opportunity to do all these things that you guys took time to figure out so n00bs like me can punch in some commands without knowing what it does or how it works. All I see is the end result and I love it!!!
So far I have
Custom splash1 and splash2
Auto-rotate browser and system
All cashes moved to SD
All apps moved to SD
Ringtones moved to SD
Removed Amazon.MP3 and Alarm
Installed tether-1.6.tar (whoever came up with that - THANK YOU!)
Windows7 theme.
Prior to updating to this theme I had removed amazon and alarm and they reappeared after I installed this theme. Now I'm scared to try out another theme because I don't want to re-do all the mods?
Can someone explain to me (and all of the n00bs out there) which mods are permanent and which ones need to be re-done after every theme change. Fell free to elaborate on the mods that I did not mention
Thanks to all for your past and future contributions, it's all greatly appreciated
Nothing is permanent.
The reason those apps returned after installing a theme is because those apps are present in the app folder in update.zip.
You can remove them again or simply remove them from the theme update.zip and then apply it.

The actual theme only consists of modifying framework-res.apk. In /system/apps is where you would delete stock programs, but it generally leads to stability issues when done so.
As far as permanence, if you do a wipe, then install a new version of an os, you will be stuck with whatever is in the update.zip package. You would need to pull the framework-res.apk from that new version, and then resign it, then install it in recovery mode.
The splash1 image is permanent, the splash2 isn't permanent if you decide to change themes, or wipe your phone (from my experience.)

Actualy, theming has to deal with modifying every apk. Yes majority of the work is done with framework but a good deal of work is done to launcher.apk, contacts.apk, and various other apks for custom icons and things related specifically to the apps theselves.

Now see, this is why I said right away that I'm a noob in this. I don't know what framework is, how launcher.apk works, etc, etc etc...
I kind of figured out that I will need to remove alarm and amazon again (from my earlier experience) but I really need someone to basically go thru the list and say "this will stay" or "you will need to do this again". This way I will compile a little "to do after theme install" list. I also would like to know what would happen if I end up doing the same mod twice, like running a command to move move all the apps to sd, not that I want to do it but hey, sh** happens.
At any rate, thanks to all for your replies.

DI14_pick-n-pack_0.2 ROM for the Samsung Mesmerize
I have reworked this ROM to make it a little easier to work with. In the 0.2 version, you will be able to flash the main package without any need to add files like in the 0.1 version. As for the removed apk files, they are now flashable either individually or in packs depending on what they are. I felt this would be an easier way to still get what you want but not having to put things together before flashing.
I still recommend that you take a backup before you flash anything. I am not responsible for any damage you do to your phone while flashing any or all parts of this ROM. I also recommend that you download both the ROM and Addons at the same time so that you do not have to wait for a second download after you have already flashed the ROM.
Also, to be clear since there has been confusion, MMS is 100% functional in this ROM because it uses stock MMS, not AOSP.
*****This ROM contains these apps:
ADW Launcher
Browser
Camera
Clock
Contacts
Gallery
Gmail
GTalk
Latitude
Maps
Market
MMS
Music Player
My Files
Navigation
Phone
Places
Quick Boot
ROM Manager
Settings
Superuser
Task Manager
Titanium Backup
Video Player
Voice Search
*****Files in the Addon Packs
AllShare
BuddiesNow
Car Cradle
Daily Briefing
Days
Desk Cradle
Dual Clock
Email and Yahoo EMail Pack
Facebook
Galaxy Help
Live Wallpaper Pack
Memo
Mini Diary
My Contacts Backup
MySpace
Samsung Weather, Stock, Calander Pack
ThinkFree Office
Tone Room Deluxe
Touchwiz Calander, Calculator Pack
Voice Commands
Wireless Modem
Write and Go
*****IF YOU HAVE VOODOO INSTALLED, DISABLE LAGFIX FIRST*****
Download the ROM and Addons. Unzip the Addons and decide which packs you want to flash. Put the ROM and individual Addons on your sdcard and boot into recovery. Flash the ROM first. Then you can flash the Addons individually. When you are done, reboot. If the phone hangs at the boot animation for more than 5 minutes, pull the battery, do three button to get back to recovery and do a data wipe/factory reset. Reboot and things should be fine.

Awesome! I'm reading up some more on how to flash these roms in and I plan on using this one. I'm new to this and just learning.
I installed ROM Manager and installed "flash clockworkmod recovery" (it said I had to) and then I clicked backup current ROM. I have tried twice, and it said failed each time.
I'm afraid to try it again, as I don't want to ruin my phone.
Any ideas?

Try going in to recovery by turning off the phone, hold the power and volume down button. Once in recovery, select apply sdcard:update.zip. That should get you get you to clockwork recovery. From there select install zip from sdcard and then choose zip from sdcard. Find the zip and flash it.
Let me know if that works.

Thanks. That was my thinking. A lot of people were asking for apps to be put back in to jt's super clean ROM so I figured this was the easiest way that anyone could just drop in what they want and it would be custom tailored to their needs.
Since I've seen over 200 people look at the page but only 2 download the package, I'm thinking that there's got to be something to the hesitation. Feedback is welcome here, and encouraged. If this is too scary and people want something that they can just flash, throw some ideas out to me. I'm definitely open to suggestions.
I think the holidays may have something to do with it. Personally, I plan to use this once I get my phone rooted (for some reason z4root locks my phone up every time) But I want to wait until the rushing, travelling holiday is over because I cant go without my phone =)
I'm happy with the SuperClean Rom and Voodoo 5 right now, otherwise I'd have given this one a shot.
I'm still using this and I have had no issues. I like being able to choose which programs are going to be on my droid, instead of having all or none that I want.
I am getting same errors also..
I have done super one click..
Run Rom Manager and chose ROM it asks to reboot I get error.
When I choose SD update.zip it boots back into a image that has sceens that have black widgets.. All other Samsung and USSC stuff is still there as well as ROM Manager..

You have to do some work on the files to make ROM Manager working.
Get Clockwork Working
That will let you make the backup.zip and install from the SD card. Threw me for a loop as well.
One thing I do not want to lose or at least be able to find in another app is the SMART ALARM ..
I know... I got used to it in just a couple days. Love the way it sort of eased you awake instead of a full on GET UP..
So question would be. Which apk and dependencies would I need to keep and or anyone know of another app that would give me same with more options.
As requested by some I have deodexed the Chinese 2.2 Froyo ROM from Here
It is the full package for now based on the exact ROM, but I will be putting out another two later one with most Chinese stuff removed and another with a fair bit of the blur social stuff removed.
Flash the package by Clockworkmod recovery in the usual way, over the 2.2 ROM. If you have removed apps they will come back, so you will have to remove them again.
Credits go to:
H5u for posting the original stock 2.2 ROM in the above thread.
Sorensiim for the hosting!
Download Here
Enjoy
NB:
If you get an issue with the camera flash after installing 2.2 chinese ROM with it flashing once and then stopping working/being ot of sync, I don't think its related to the deodexed files, however I fixed it by wiping data for camera 2.21 in Titanium Backup
Thank you!
This is exactly, what I've been waiting for.
Could someone please explain what this Deodexed Framework is and what it does or what it's for?
Thanks

.odex files are present in the system by default and accompany most apps (generally apk+odex). The process of deodexing (afaik) removes these files.
As far as purpose goes, Odex system: generally faster, more stable, Deodexed system: easier to mod (bootscreens, lockscreens, themes, etc)
if you're new to the scene that's basically the nutshell version of what you need to know.
Does this still contain Chinese? We really need it.

I don't know if it's signed version, but use "update from zip" in the recovery mode, i've used like this.
Also you can delete some unneeded apk before updating by open zip with winrar (or other) and delete it directly, because older deleted apk will be installed again...

update zips don't need to be signed for clockworkmod, if you remove apk's from the package and flash, make sure they weren't there before or they'll still be in system minus the odex files.
Oh, clockwork mod. I don't have that. Where to get please.
To be more specific I go into recovery and all I see is
reboot system now
apply sdcard:update.zip
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
that's it.
Is clockwork mod suppose to replace this?

Hi Guys,
Every ROM I flash I try to Freeze/Uninstall and remove from Boot Many, the YouTube App.
I don;t use it ever, but even if it says freezed successfully it still comes back after reboot.
What's so special about it and will it creat a problem if I delete it and main question is how?

In my other android device experience, Nook Color / Simple Touch, YouTube is instrumental in the Google Apps authentication process. For instance to get market working on nooted versions of those devices you had to sign into YouTube first.
Why are you trying to get rid of it?

Fair enough. Why don't you give it a try? Make a nandroid backup and then delete the file via ADB in recovery mode (or move it to /data/local/tmp for easy restore). Clear Cache / Dalvik reboot and see if anything isn't working properly.
I would say you can delete via ADB in ICS but many people, myself included, are having issues mounting /system in ICS. It could be possible that this failure for /system to consistently mount could be why TiBu isn't freezing it properly.
Use root uninstaller, its how I have removed all system apps since my gb 2.3.1 days on my x10. A very effective method
Thank you for responces.
The proper way I found would be to transfer it to a User App and uninstall.

I use 7zip. open the archive and delete it, or add whatever .apk you desire. I always do this before I even flash a rom. Winrar should work fine, though.
Hey guys, i've made a MIUI Debloat Script for ALL MIUI based ROMs (even Chinese as i included crap apps such as Baidu to debloat exclusive from that ROM). The idea is to keep a simple and clean system. You also can install a Full Hosts File so you can block ads without installing a third party app.
Tested on mi-Globe
To install download the MIUI-Debloat.zip or MIUI-Debloat-Safe.zip or MIUI-Debloat-Full.zip and Hosts.zip
Download:
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=296356
Instructions:
HOW TO INSTALL?
Flash the Debloat zip AFTER the first boot and initial setup!!
1 - Download and save the choosen zip file to the folder that you use to flash zips.
2 - Reboot to TWRP recovery.
3 - Make a FULL nanobackup on TWRPs "BACKUP" section (data, system, vendor, boot, all you can/need).
4 - Select the zip you just downloaded and flash it.
5 - If you want, flash the hosts.zip after.
7 - Reboot.
What apps will it exclude from my system?

How do I add apps in that list bro??
Gonna try it later.
Just flashed it, rebooted normally, checking for review. I'm on miui 10 Global beta.

One of the apps that i debloat is GreenGuard.
I have no idea of what it do, nor i noted anything missing or something broke on the phone.
If Anyone know what it do and if it is essential, tell me so i can update the script by not debloating this app.
All others i'm positive.

Hey M8, you need to download notepad++ on Windows and 7-zip.
Save the zip file on Windows and open with 7-zip
There navegate to
META-INF/com/google/android/
and extract the file "updater-script"
Edit it with notepad++ and add the files you wish there
drag and drop the new file on the zip folder that it was and it's ready

Ok i just tested, it worked for me. Idk what is the issue.
Wow, thank you very much.
There's a long list of bloatware to freeze or uninstall, I'll try to find it again and share it, maybe you can add to the script.

Hey M8, how are you doing?
I use Orange Fox (the latest version) too so it isn't the problem.
The only things i can thing are:
If your Orange Fox isn't mounting the system partition or if it's mounting it as Read only. Do you know if it display a error message after you flash the script?
2nd is that most MIUI core things that it debloat wont show for you (except if you seek for them with an app such as link2SD) and the things that show on the launcher, such as the Google assistant/Search app, will still be there if you at a point updated it via playstore.
Why? Well once we update a system app via playstore, it wont re-write the app on the system partition, it will create a new one on the DATA partition.
Try to uninstall it via the Playstore and check if after, the green button appear to Install it, or to Update it.
If it show Install, the script did work as the system app was removed and now you removed the data trace.
If it show Update, then it still is there and i have no idea why.
Guys, i've made a new script called MIUI-Debloat-safe.zip
It is the same, how ever it don't remove some core apps.
Why? Here is where i may need your help, with a older version of the script (one that was exact the same as the "safe" version i actually had better Deep Sleep. Maybe there is such a thing of remove too much, as google gapps check for one and another.
What it wont remove?
/system/app/greenguard
/system/priv-app/GoogleBackupTransport
/system/priv-app/GoogleFeedback
/system/priv-app/GoogleRestore
/system/priv-app/MiRecycle
I do, how ever recomend to use an app such as AppDisable to freeze GreenGuard, as when i had epic Deep Sleep, it was frozen so you guys can test if it is indeed better or not this "older" version of the script.
Maybe i'm wrong as each battery cycle is different, but still i think i own you guys to share this.
If you want to test it, make 3 battery cycles with the normal script and check the deep sleep statistics.
Then reflash the ROM (to re install the apps it debloated) and flash the safe debloat script.
Check the statistics on 3 battery cycles that are close to the ones you did with the first and report to me.
If the "safe" version indeed is better with BB and you frozen the GreenGuard system app, i'll remove the normal version and make a new one that is exactly as the safe one, but without the GreenGuard app to test.

file explorer is needed. yes you can install another from playstore but sometimes its needed. example if i have a theme in sd card. to choose theme in my case using solid explorer it doesnt allow me to select browse file. if file explorer is present then you can select or browse for file.
i have my own debloater too.
