New to Android, which phone should I pick? - General Topics

About a week ago I decided that it's time to give up iPhone and try something new. I was checking the HTC Wildfire and thought that it would be an okay first Android phone, and also I can buy a brand new one when I've sold my iPhone 3GS 32GB. But then I started to look at auctions and such, and I saw that ppl actually want to trade their HTC Desires and Nexus Ones for a iPhone 3GS. And now I don't know if I should, once again, get something used or if I should for once buy something brand new. I also like that the Wildfire is a tad smaller than the iPhone, but the screen and power on the Desire seems a lot better. The Nexus One seems pretty decent, too.
I'm also afraid that the response on the screen of the Wildfire will be lower since it will be a budget phone. And in my understanding the Desire seems like a updated knock-off of the Nexus One?
So I would appreciate some help with this, since I have no experience with Android phones. Never even held one.
And if I was to get a Desire or N1, then I could get it tomorrow or so.
Thanks!

HTC Desire! The desire is not a knock off of the Nexus One, the Nexus One was handled by Google and HTC. The Desire is handled by HTC's own design team, and own interface, and its own support. IMO it loks better then the nexus one because of the trackpad.

Yeah, the Desire is looking more and more interesting. And since people really want to trade without any money in between, it doesn't seem like such a bad deal.

Plus, it has Sense UI.

The Desire is very appealing but I think I'm holding out for the HTC Vision ( a Desire with a hardware slide out keyboard) , hopefully it will have a better camera though.
I could end up waiting forever if I'm always wanting something slightly better than what is available. Tis lucky I'm still happy with my Hero, still will be for the next 3 - 6 months I reckon.
You've already made the best decision by going with Android.

A friend told me to buy HTC Legend, but I think he only likes the name. Is it any good?

Nexus 1 is freedom. And the optical pad isn't nearly as nice on the desire that I had on my xperia x1.

So with a Nexus One I can pretty much do what I want?
EDIT: Oh, and how about the battery life? That is something I really hate with the iPhone. I'm a frequent user of my phone and the iPhone barely lasts a day (read around 16hrs).

Evo battery life blows
If you don't like bad batteries, you should stay away from the Evo. I unfortunately don't live in a 4G network, but my battery still gets drained. It's probably because I'm playing with the phone so much though. I've gotten about 10-11 hours of battery using some wi-fi, messing around with apps, sending lots of texts, taking some pics, playing back media, and streaming some stuff (but never for long periods of time, more like just showing a ton of people the different features).
I have a suspicion there's no way around a bad battery when you have a gorgeous, HUGE screen to power up.

Yeah, that is probably true. My gf's iPhone 3G lasts about 2-3 days, but she barely touches it except when she's listening to music on her 10 minute walk to school. Also she has roaming and such turned off.
EDIT: And it looks like I've found someone willing to trade their HTC Desire for my iPhone. :O Maybe even give me a few pounds since the device had some scratches on a corner.

This is a very easy debate and can be solved by 1 word only.
Froyo.
The nexus one has it, no one else does.
Also the Sense UI is very will known to slow down your phone. Personally I also do not like the look over it and prefer the stock UI of android.

like jz said, the nexus one is Google's baby. Google makes android. Therefore its safe to say the N1 will always be out front of any android device, and will likely have less bugs. I have the htc hero and while I do love it, I wish I researched first and got T-Mobile and the N1.

the evo for sprint

+1 The Nexus & Froyo is a powerful combo!

Got a Desire yesterday. Even got £20 (guess I could've gotten more) between.
And i'm happy with the device so far.

Right now... get the Galaxy S

for android... get the EVO !

Just had a play with the Desire - wow is simply the way to describe it.
Leaves the other phones for dead and makes the current Iphone look sick imo.

Would be interested to hear how you get on, am thinking the same, have an Iphone....can we have a fair, honest review on your change from Iphone to Desire ?

I'm not really good at writing reviews, but I'll write something short and then you can ask questions!
I've now had the Desire for two days and I'm starting to get the hang of it. It's really different from an iPhone (no ****). I think it would have been easier/better to have a PC for this Device (or any other Android I guess) since there seem to bee some problem connecting it with the macbook. But maybe I just haven't found the best software yet.
The phone is very nice. I like the big screen and how clear it looks. The touch is working better than expected. But I think I need to recalibrate the touch since I need to click a bit higher than I would want to on buttons at the top of the screen. Otherwise it's probably as good at touch as the iPhone. Don't really feel any real difference.
I had some problem with the phone unlocking in my pocket, but I put in a lock combination to prevent that.
The battery life is about the same as the iPhone. I think at least. Hard to tell since I've been using the phone a lot these two days.
Hmm... what else? Oh, I like the keyboard better. But that's probably because of the bigger screen, thus the bigger keyboard.
And of course the Android Market doesn't have the quality of the App Store. But that's understandable.
Ask questions! It's much easier two answer than to write reviews.

[Q] Should I make the switch to Android?

Hi everyone!
As the title suggests, I'm thinking about making the switch to Android I'm currently at windows mobile, on a HD2. It's a great phone but I can't help but feel that WinMo just doesn't make such a great mobile OS.
Custom ROM's do improve the experience and all, but still, it's WinMo.. So, I thought "Okay, I'll sell my HD2 and buy myself a Desire". At this time of writing, someone is willing to pay € 250 (keep in mind that this phone is almost a year old and has some scratches on the side).
€ 250 is okay, but I'm aiming for € 300
But, now I'm getting second thoughts.. Should I wait to switch to android? Or should I keep the HD2? The Desire seems pretty solid and futureproof...
I really don't know anymore.. And since it involves quite a lot of money, I thought I could use someone else's take on this
So XDA, what do you think is best?
Wait for something better than the desire, and in the mean time, use the android rom for the hd2
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Yeah, that's why I'm having second thoughts There are a lot rumored phones which should out somewhere around the holidays I guess.. But, is it worth the wait? Because the rumored dual core cpu seems kinda overkill.. And 1.2 GHz cpu's don't really seem to make much difference to me.
I mean, 1GHz is already a lot of horse power for a phone :O
Edit: In the world of gadgets and technology, something new and better is released daily, I could keep on waiting for something better?
It depends what you want from your phone. I've had the desire since probably about April, and whilst it was already an amazing phone, I rooted it yesterday because I didn't want to wait around for froyo update. Now what was a great phone is a Stellar phone!
But that's just me. As others have said, HTC are bringing some new phones out but hardware wise they're not too dissimilar to turf desire. If you want either a 4+ inch screen an 8meg camera, or a slide out keyboard, then wait for the desire HD or the Desire Z.
If these are not essential, a desire will be future proof for a least a year yet id say. But hey I'm no.expert

I was kinda thinking the same thing Although I'm hoping to get by a little longer with such a phone, so that's why I want to make the right decision this time. I mean, the HD2 feels like a mistake.. It was and still is, a quite expensive phone so yeah..
En pff, a 4" screen is nice but I don't know.. It's probably going to be the same resolution? And the design of the Desire HD looks less attractive compared to the one of the HD2 or the Desire. Well, that's just my opinion
and oh, do you have any remarks on your Desire? Something that could've been done better or..?
I'd definitely make the switch. With the help of a friend, I was recently able to put Android (2.2) on my Acer L2R Geeksphone. Since then, I've just been addicted to the phone (mind you, my Tilt2 has got super specs in almost every single aspect than the Acer L2R).
Everything that wasn't available for me with Wm is now on Android. My Tilt2 has just been laying on the floor since I got Android on this device. Now I'm looking to get a Captivate.
I've been with Windows Mobile since PocketPC 2002 on my Toshiba e740. I liked the OS because it was hackable. Swap out components, make edits, and new features.
What I didn't like is the sluggishness.
Android on my Nexus One is amazing. Here are a few thoughts that I've come across. The trackball is better then an optical pad, but don't buy anything without either one of those. You could get by without it but the trackball has really been useful in games and emulaters. I'm not sure how the optical pad would suffice. I had a Samsung Epix with an optical sensor and 1 swipe was 1 direction. So gaming is out right there. Selecting text is a pain but better then nothing.
The larger screens may seems nice, but the same resolution things will start to look blocky/pixelized. My friend has an AT&T Captivate (Galaxy S) and the screen looks good. It is a bit too big for me. The bigness of the screen make the phone very thin. Which is a good/bad thing. The Galaxy S is sweet but it lacks a trackball/sensor that is very handy.
The Desire is basically the same as a Nexus One. If I could trade my Trackball for a few physical buttons... I wouldn't. The phone is responsive and fast enough to use the onscreen controls. Being able to hit the green send button to quickly bring up the dialpad would very sweet vs having to launch the dialer from my homescreen. Honestly I don't miss a physical button though.
Life is a trade off though:
Nexus One
Trackball is the best of the best if you want to do any kind of gaming.
Trackball Notifications is a treat, presenting 255 programmable different colors for various notifications.
I think they got the FM radio working on the Nexus One.
Software updates are glorious.
You can make the Nexus one look like the Desire (which is sexy)
Desire:
Physical buttons make it easy to bring up the dialer from anywhere to make a call. I've noticed on Android the End Key doesn't really do anything beside hang up a call. I guess some programs could remap those keys for other uses.
Optical sensor is middle grade. Makes gaming basically useless unless it is all touch controls. Given the quirky multitouch issues of the screen in the Desire/Nexus one, that is also limiting.
I think the Desire is sexy
Galaxy S
I'm not too sure about it yet. I recommended my friend by one, and he did. He complains about the battery being very very short (half a day on light use).
The screen has a blue/green hue. Very noticable.
The screen is easily visible in direct sunlight. Which is awesome.
No trackball/sensor. Ouch.
Hummingbird processor/GPU
Screen has a great multitouch screen. So multitouch gaming is easily possible.
Phone is so THIN that you could probably afford a thicker longer battery to make it last throughout the day.
My opinion... wait. If you want one now the Nexus will start to get Gingerbread probably starting in October (almost a month). Maybe try to find one second hand or cheap. Stay out of contract because some better phones with better processors will start coming out very soon.
The wait for a new phone like desire hd or desire z is not to long and will be a big difference. But no one would blame you if you jumped the gun, especially if you like the design better and feel 1 ghz is enough.
Yeah, the Nexus One has crossed my mind already.. but it's a bit more expensive than the Desire and it's kinda hard to order one and get it shipped right here to Belgium.
I don't know why, but Google doesn't ship to Belgium. It did to the Netherlands but, Google has stopped shipping Nexus' and right now, I don't find a webshop which has cheap shipping or even the Nexus One.
And concerning the Desire HD/Z, I don't think there'll be much difference, the Z will have a physical keyboard and the HD will have a huge screen, just like de HD2 does. But, I noticed that with the HD2, holding the phone can be problematic sometimes. Operating the device with one hand can be kinda tricky, you could easily drop the phone that way..And oh, the Desire HD is not likely to have a trackbaal/sensor And just like player911 says, it's something which is very handy! Most of the time when I have a Android device in my hand, I use the trackball/sensor to switch screens etc.

(rumored spec's of the HTC HD, although I guess most of you already knew that )
Are there any more rumored Android devices? :O
One of the only things I would have improved on the desire would have been speed of the OS as it ran slightly slow at times. However now that I've upgraded to froyo I'm struggling to think of anything. The minor gripes I had before are mostly ironed out in froyo.
The biggest negative for The desire is the battery life, but this can be remedied in a # of different ways. I have a spare battery for instance. Also, froyo supposedly improves battery but I haven't run any tests personally.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I'd wait for better and more powerful android devices as i can't see much difference or generation gap between the HD2 and Desire/Captivate etc.. HD2 is still a powerhouse device and it has great android rom ports. In addition, it looks like WM7 port will be available for HD2,too. So hd2 is also very flexible between different platforms.
Sems.

Good point. But the Android ports for the HD2 are nothing close to the real deal, it seems. No? And personally, I don't like WP7 at all.. Way to apple-ish for me. I want a phone which lets me do whatever I want to do with it. That's something which is not going to be possible with WP7 - unless it gets hacked, and it probably will, but still, I don't like it
Battery on desire will get you through about a day on a single charge (pre froyo) but its not drastically worse than other smart phones I don't think. I always charge my phone everyday anyway.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I wouldn´t think on make the switch
My Leo is capable of having the best of both OS and still has same or even better specs than "newer" devices.
And now that WP7 is just around the corner, I´ll stay with WM/WP!
After owning an HD2 you won't to go back to anything with a smaller screen, i did and hated it, so bought a streak! So much better than the HTC in every department
Personally, I think 4" is the biggest screen size I find comfy. Anything bigger is a bit of a risk in the hand.
Ive had the Nexus one and the desire. ALthough near identical, I much appreciate the hard buttons as opposed t o the softkeys on the Nexus.
The Nexus Trackball acts funny after a few months of use (or did in my case) and the optical joystick on the desire randomly breaks with most CM based Roms. so
Btw HTC Sense has a pretty good text selection feature making it easy to deal w/o any sort of joystick/trackball.
I'd wait and get the next range of HTC phones or a samsung galaxy phone. Both will have huge android dev (galaxy coz they simply sold so many!) and HTC because the community has been built around HTC Devices.
The two biggest things on my Desire wish list include:
- better GPU not that I really play games , but hey! I would if I could!
- Multi touch issue (you wont notice it in the browser) but a lot of games are soooo frustrating because of the multi-touch bug
THe Nexus one had the following issues:
Power button has a mind of its own
hard to press soft keys
Bought a Galaxy S to review so will let you know what thats like. Im sure it'll have its quirks.
Hope this helped

Should i trade My Captivate for Desire Z?

As the title says it, should i trade it for desire z? ive read some stuff online, like i know captivate has an amazing screen, looks good, bigger screen , samoled, but the thing is it sells for less like 350$ if your lucky.. should i do it?
Should i wear the Blue Shirt or the Green Shirt?
green btw b honest lol .
I, personally, would take the trade. I prefer the look and feel of the Desire Z (though the keys are a bit small), and being an HTC device, it tends to have a much larger community following/support (like cyanogenmod and the like)... but that's just my opinion on it
inital rooting and stuff is a bit more in-depth than captivate but it is totally doable and had many of the same options. i originally was going to get the Z because it has keyboard too. after looking into the extra crap i was kind of releaved. check out the XDA wiki on that phone for more info
I like the desire z, I'm partial to HTC products and the use of adb tools mainly because I have zero formal training in any computer training. Using adb to root has a certain wow factor for me. However I had the inspire for a week and returned it after bringing it back to stock form. I just couldn't justify paying the full retail price for it. So, now I'm back to the captivate using cog 4 and have a new renowned love for this phone. Ultimately its up to you. I personally think the captivate is a great device especially with a base froyo and GPS being fixed. Build quality would go to HTC though. I hope this helped as its a long rant.
I was really not impressed with the inspire, or sense for that matter.
After messing around with the inspire for two days and seeing how much stuff sense adds in it actually makes me feel less bad about t-wiz. With touch wiz after you delete the launcher and some samsung apk's, alls that's left is twframework which besides adding some small cosmetic stuff adds the shortcuts to the pull down menu, which I like. The inspire had more htc apks than almost the total amount of apks in my rom. There was almost 60 framework files before deodexing the inspire. The inspire is generally quick as far as cpu stuff, like app to qr. I use this app sometimes for a real life cpu task tests when testing kernels and whatnot. The inspire will generate the apps 2-3 times faster than the captivate. Despite this, the captivate just feels waaaaaay smoother and LESS laggy mostly I guess because the GPU is so much better.
i have been using my HTC Vision (Tmob G2) unlocked with my ATT card (most of my time is spent on wifi anyway) and while i absolutely love the battery life i get with the DesireZ rom on it, i hate the keyboard. i have been trying to force myself to use it more and more, but i keep wanting to go back to one of my captivates and swype....i feel the trial period wont last long now...my cappies are calling my name
Dilli, my exact feeling. That's why when I had ilthe inspire I removed sense completely. Its a beautiful fast phone with launcherpro minus the tiny battery but I could not justify the full retail price.

Yup I did the same thing. Instead of wasting my early upgrade on a phone that's hardware is gonna be outdated very(if not already) soon when it seems like this year is gonna bring some crazy phones and cpus and whatnot. I paid the full 450 for it, returned it about a week later and bought the atrix for 400. Despite the whole bootloader issue, the atrix IS without a doubt the fastest phone I've ever used, even if the system is not fully utilizing its dual core yet, which I kinda hope its not cause when it does, its gonna be insane. And running app to qr on the atrix is even almost twice as fast as the inspire, probably 4 times faster than the captivate, plus so far is buttery smooth. The inspire was almost a tradeoff for a little bit of speed but greatly reduced smoothness. Atrix so far has both, plus I actually like the screen a lot.
wow damn, but if anything i can always sell it for more, in canada desire z sells for 400$ plus, captivate.. barley sells and its furstrating since captivate is better in aspects of screen weight and stuff and battery is better!! Inspire is the Desire HD in canada? seriously you guys didnt like that/ that looks like a sick device, anyways might go for a red torch xD sell it and add about 100$ and buy a new iphone4 front facing camera <3
I would take a captivate or an inspire for that matter any day of the week over an iphone 4. Had one of those too, along with every other iphone and was very involved in the jailbreak scene, up until I tried android. There's no way ill EVER go back to ios. This is my opinion, but ios completely sucks compared to android. You'll be bored with it in a week, even if you jailbreak. I would literally rather have a captivate on stock 2.1 than a jailbroken iphone 4
really? dont get me wrong android is nice, but i like to have that GPS option working on an iphone than not workin on a captivate + i personally dont like the touch buttons prefer the one form i9000

Will I like the Sensation?

Long story short, I lost my Samsung Vibrant (my previous upgrade 5 months ago) or it was stolen and T-mobile offered me a Free phone if I extend our lines for 2 years. (couldn't get the deal in the future or I would have waited for the Galaxy 2 probably) Which overall wasn't a big deal as we have been with them for 5 years and everything works out well. (plus we can still downgrade/upgrade our plan)
Anyway,
I chose the Sensation and had a few questions.
Will I like it? It seems very promising and I loved my G1.
More importantly, can I root it and throw on the roms I see floating around? Some people In reviews said the boot loader is locked? But not on newer versions?
the phone is GREAT. rooting and s-off is very easy. go into android developement and there will be the thread for it. the roms are all mostly sense roms. cm7 is out but still in beta but its pretty stable. so is MIUI, a iphoneish not really rom. only things wrong with miui is wifi calling and bluetooth. i think so with cm7 too.

Have you noticed any signal issues? I've read a few but the majority of the people didn't have it.
I'm excited. HTC is awesome build quality. Should be plenty even with the slower dual core compared to the galaxy.
Only thing I was really worried about was screen but it seems this one is pretty good.
Also, is the Zagg shield worth it? I really want a decent screen protector but hate trying to put them on.
about the screen,
maybe it's not as beautiful as I-PHONE, but I think the quality is very good already.
It's a good phone, I like it very much
so~~~many things here, you can discover to modify you phone, and improve it performance.
Don;t worry, just check it out ~XD
I think you'll love it. I used to have an iPhone4 and love this phone. The build quality is real good. The speaker seems a little on the quiet side. I'd recommend rooting it ASAP and installing CM7. Yes, it's in the alpha phase right now, but it's real fast and CM is so nice imho of course.
So yeah, the Sensation has a great screen, a good feel, and is pretty quick. Much faster than a stock SGSII if you install a modded ROM and overclock it ;-)
I will for sure root it and put a rom on it. Not so sure I will overclock it.
Can you comment on call quality and speed? My vibrant only had 3g so looking forward to 4g.
I'm almost thinking of downgrading my data plan too. The last 4 months of use on my Vibrant I did maybe 350MB's total out of 5GB.
Any comments on a Zagg screen? that or is there something easy to put on it off Amazon? ( i have 2 day shipping)
Any clue when t-mobile will get the Galaxy s2? That's the only other phone I would have wanted but, I had to go with one today as I couldn't get the deal again.
im not really a big fan of screen protectors so i really cant recomend one. i do know that the zagg sheild is a good screen protector. i have used one in the past and i liked how it feels. its really solid and thick so you will get the feeling that nothin will scratch it unlike any of the other screen protectors out there. tmobile sells one as well. but i had one on my hd2 but i didnt like it cause it has a matte finnish to prevent smudges and it just felt awkward whenever i move my thumb around. you can always look around on ebay for a really cheap one. but like i said i really dont use them. i buy them and i wind up removin them a few weeks later. idk y its just the way i am. and i never had a problem with scracthes. with the exception of the hd2 but i had that phone for over a year before i got that scratch and you really cant see it plus i replaced it with the sensation a week later.
as far as the galaxy s ii i believe it comes out sometime next month. most likely at the end. anyone can correct me if im wrong here.
i for one love htc phones just becuase of build quality and sense ui. but some people dont like sense so its really up to the user on that. just go to the store and play around with the sensation and the galaxy s ( i know its not the s ii but its close to it.) and see for yourself. i think youll love the htc sensation.
edit: get the zagg sheild. i think its the best bang for your buck
I'm much in the same boat guys, going to be coming from an iPhone 4.
I've had a Nexus S and an Atrix, but didn't like the Atrix due to the screen and motoblur (at the time development was slow), and the Nexus S build quality was appalling.
I just want good battery life and great build quality, good screen and fast.
Will I like it do you guys reckon ?

Tbh I can't tell much different between the quality of this screen and the iphone 4. Except that ours is bigger of course.
I love this phone. Now that I am sense free with cyanogenmod its easily the fastest phone I've ever seen.
The only real ***** is the usual one with htc phones. Htc always put **** external speaker in their phones. Its still useable but compared to some of the other smart phones out there it could be better.

Any former Nexus S users want to comment on the Sensation V. NxS?

Any former Nexus S owners on the Sensation boards who can give me some good feeback on their Nexus S v. the Sensation now that they have had the phones for a while? I'm really not a power user, I do email, web browsing, and listen to some podcasts and audio books, and take pictures and that's pretty much all I do with my phone. As such I was actually thinking of downgrading from my Sensation to a Nexus S, just because I want to try out a Nexus phone and I can't afford to get a Galaxy Nexus. I'd love to hear some feedback on every day speeds of the UI (lag etc) and battery life especially. Screen, etc.
I had my Nexus S as a daily driver for about 5 months (give or a take a few weeks), and have had my Sensation since around the time it launched-- so very comparable timespans.
In my experience, emailing and audio usage had effectively no difference between handsets; I used Gmail and PowerAMP on both, so I cannot comment on any performance differences between stock AOSP and HTC Email or Music apps.
The camera is IMO a pretty notable improvement on the Sensation. Not just the qHD resolution (more on that in a sec), but the image quality in general. Not to mention the 1080P videorecording ability. Looks ace. I believe I had a ROM that handled 720P videorecording, but IIRC the framerate wasn't as good.
Honestly, I can't say as I felt that either one had smoother UI-- although I've gone to lengths to either clear out some of the Sense 3.X bloat on my Sensation, and exclusively used custom ROMs for both phones.
Battery life was a bit better on my Nexus S-- although a CM7-based ROM and an undervolted kernel undoubtedly affected that. Comparing stock kernels, though, I think it's fair to say that they were about equal, with the NS maybe a *smidge* better.
The biggest reason I prefer my Sensation is the screen size/resolution. qHD is really excellent, and I don't think I could go back-- even though the NS has a reasonably large screen as well. Larger resolution and pixel density makes the text easier on the eyes (and that's coming from a young-ish guy, so it's a pretty dramatic improvement if even I notice ), and fits more content on the screen than I remember having on the NS. Reading webpages also feels better by comparison on my Sensation.
Since we live and die by the touchscreens on our devices, I'd say that's the most convincing reason why I personally would never go back to the Nexus S. Or even my trusty, beloved Nexus One.
EDIT: Hopefully someone who kept their NS stock would be better able to speak to some of the issues above where I wasn't able to comment as well. NSCollab and Netarchy's kernels were just too sweet of a combo for me to want to stay stock, though :]
Hm, that was some good insight. I honestly have been considering trading my Sensation for a Nexus S if I can find someone local with T-Mobile who is willing.
I'm still on the fence. Unfortunately, I feel like my Snesation has caused a lot mroe headaches than my Nexus One did. I am really starting to miss that phone...
Oh. God. Also, the fact that the Sensation has a microSD slot is a big deal for me. I'm a media hoarder, so the 16GB limitation on the Nexus S was terrible for me. I know the OP said that media was one of his factors.
As for sn0warmy, they really just don't make em like they made the Nexus One, eh? (As long as we sort of gloss over the ****ty touchscreen errors on the N1) :]
What sorts of headaches are you having with the Sensation though? Hopefully I've gone through them too, and might have some advice?
Hey guys. Any of you Nexus S owners have any problems with lag(like major lag) on everyday tasks like composing a SMS or any issues making phone calls? My mom just got the S and I've seen it do it to her. She types something and it just stalls like an old Windows 95 machine with an enormous work load. It also refuses to make calls sometimes, with the same stalled out results. Its on Sprint but it's got to be a bad handset right? Should I have her take it in or are these problems with all Nexus S sets?

Unfortunately, I just can't get used to what feels like poor design quality to me. The phone pops and creeks when using it due to the way the screen and back plate are mounted together. It just doesn't feel as solid as I would like.
Secondly, I am now on my second Sensation. The first one was replaced due to dust under the screen and within 1 week of having the new one I had the same dust problem. And it really erks me that there are a large number of us with this issue yet HTC still refuses to admit it's an actual problem.
The one thing that makes me nervous about switching more than anything else is losing the dual core processor. An Ice Cream Sandwich port is undoubtedly around the corner for the Sensation with full dual core support. At which point I think the Sensation will blow the Nexus S out of the water with speed performance.
I have a nexus s as well, just got it 3 weeks ago and it's alright. Its not as snappy as the sensation and you can see the one second lag when you switch from aanother app to another. Right now I'm running the oxygen rom on it and the battery life is awesome.
More on it later, I hate typing long comparisons on my phone

Love both, been using the nexus s since December (when power button & USB port tapped out on nexus one) ... well, I wouldn't ditch the sensation for the nexus s. But there are a few things the nexus s has over the sensation. Color, sound, voodoo mods, ease of root, and unlocking bootloader, design (sensation housing engineer belongs in the dungeon, I couldn't use it without a case), power button on sensation is suspect as well, just feels like its wearing out each time I press it. I guess if you're a Google fan I'd recommend the nexus s. If you're an HTC fan, the sensation.

Well I'll start off by stating the obvious which is the Nexus S is vanilla.(Pure ANDROID!) So I bought the Nexus S sometime during the beggining of the summer, and for the first 3 months I loved it nonetheless. Coming from the HD2 prior I was use to flashing roms left & right! so using the Nexus S with stock overall felt stable & fluid. However I'm one of the individuals who had a bad pba(printed board assembly) board so about 3 weeks ago I sent my device to Samsung. Waitng two weeks for a phone is ridiculous, & recieving it broken is even more RIDICOLOUS. The phone booted up(which was the issue) , but when plugged into the computer, even with the updated drivers my device wouldnt be detected. Long story short I sold my Nexus S the same day UPS sent it, followed by heading over to a local cellphone store and trading it in for my new SENSATION! I don't regret it one bit. Sure the Prime is Amazing! however if Samsung decides on making the storage internal again, that will be my make or break decision. Oh, not to mention the Sensation has the 8226 qualcomm processor, running at 1.2ghz, which by the way is underclocked. The qhd display along with an 8MP dual flash camera gives the Nexus S a run for its money...Just Saying

GSM i9250 Galaxy nexus vs HTC Sensation.. Why i kept the Nexus.

Well hey guys. I've been getting alot of questions on whether people should go and get a nexus or keep the sensation since i was an extremely early adopter of the sensation and a huge HTC Fan. To be honest, i like the nexus, probably 10 more times than i liked the sensation, and here's why.
NO OVERHEATING. As many of you know, the sensation likes to get all hot and bothered. But, it gets a little too hot. its gotten hot on me to the point it burned the inside of my gel case i bought for it. The nexus has YET to even start to get a LITTLE warm, and trust me i charged it exactly how i did the sensation. Probably one of the main reasons i like the nexus.
BUILD QUALITY.Personally i love the way both of these devices are built. But in the end i have to give it to the Nexus. Reason being i like that the device literally feels PERFECT in the hand to me. the perfect mix between not too light but not ridiculous like the razr. I've had alot of experience with the lte nexus since i work for verizon and i like the gsm version more because its more thin and light.
GPS. Now i don't understand why people hate samsung for their crappy gps from what i read. This is the first smartphone i've ever owned that picked up my location at my house DIRECTLY THE FIRST TIME. Not two houses over or a block. My exact home address. Every other phone put me somewhere else, including the sensation.
BATTERY LIFE! I've never, ever, EVER, EVER had a phone thats lasted longer than this nexus has. im on 1 day,3h,24 min on battery with 34 percent left! NEVER have i had battery life this good. Most will say "hey shaq, your not using the phone thats why its lasting so long.derp derp derp" You want to know what i say to that? " NO boy, i've been using this phone constantly especially since its new and i've only had it for two days. Silly ass. "
Besides the screen which obviously goes to the nexus, this is why im keeping it. I don't know if many of you will even care about this, but this is for those who were wondering thats all. This isn't a biased review AT ALL seeing as i never liked samsung, don't like the sgs2 or any of their devices (yes even the Nexus S) and this is the first samsung device i've ever bought, and i'm extremely impressed. Hope this helps those on the gate about this phone.

No issues here.

Felt the nexus, ain't worth ****. Just like an LG Optimus 2x

Fast fix, here the same. Unrooted phone.

Got 2 days and 5 hours with standard rom, mediocore usage. Always 3G.

Must say, the only reason I should use a Nexus is because of the Amoled. But since it ain't got sense.
It has nothing.
Not to forget.. It only has a 5mpixel camera aswell.

Android 4.0 honestly destroys what sense ever was honestly if you gave it a try.
Samsung Actually makes cameras, their 5mp camera could easily be compared to a moto or htc camera and be on par or even beat it. It has one of the best camera sensors out on a phone. Megapixels don't determine how good the camera is . Trust me, i've done alot of tests against one another.
lol about the pyramid GPS, you're wrong, i tryed it at lobby of a big complex and it found my location in 30sec.
No microSD card slot.
No mass storage mode (so I can't use iTunes Agent)
No offline sync with PC for calendar and contacts (old fashioned I know, but I just don't want to sync with Google's sevrers).
No in-built DLNA app (Google really need to up their game with core functionality like this and implement full GUI mirroring to TVs/monitors via DLNA or wifi direct as standard so we can do more with our devices)
Other than that, I probably would've bought the Nexus too.
It would be nice if the Sensation didn't gently toast my backside when it's in my pocket ; )
Guys it looks like you are trying to change Shaqs mind. Don't, it will only lead to misunderstandings an flame wars.
@Shaq, thanks for sharing, you aren't the first person which said that he likes GN more than Sensation, but you are the first to explain why. While I disagree with heat issue (mine never got that hot) the rest of the point can be only understood by direct comparison (not possible in my case). Also, we don't know what HTC is going to come up with for the next Sense, but i have a feeling it's going to be rather yummy.
But all in all, possibility of me going to GED is higher and higher every day I use Android.
I would trade my sensation for a nexus in a heartbeat if it wasn't so. Damn big

I've got to agree with you on both points, I'm a avid htc fan but from the leaked ICS sense roms htc have seriously messed it up and I'm not talking about the obvious lags as it is a leak, and yes Megapixels count for nothing its all about the sensor
Sent from a galaxy far far away
Nice nice! I've tho heard that the nexus have a rubbish battery life, but then it is better than the sensation, so that's good.
When I saw the nexus, I thought about buying it, too but the lack of SD card made me go nono ^^

That would be me. I'm too strapped for cash right now to even consider getting a GN, but I did wonder how much better (or worse) it was compared to Sensation. So thanks for this.
Lack of SD card slot does kill me a little inside, but I'm sure the overall user experience makes you forget that. I had an iPhone previously, so I'm sure I could get over the lack of SD slot.

It's not that big. Remember it has no hard keys so it's only marginally bigger than the Sensation.
The OP should have just said this:
I like the Nexus over the Sensation because I WORK FOR VERIZON
troll thread can be closed
GSM i9250 Galaxy nexus vs [INSERT ANY SMARTPHONE].. Why i kept the Nexus.
Its kinda surprising to see senior members troll. I understand you wanted to share your opinion really bad to justify your purchase but imo there is a better place to do that. I visit this forum to learn/discover something new about a device I own. I dont care why you choose GN or any other phone.
To the last two individuals, why did you read this post and comment? If you didnt care about this you wouldn't have commented..right? I dont quite understand the logic of you posting in my thread. If no one cared, people wouldnt have read nor commented this thread. Are you guys feeling good about yourselves posting such nonsense?
If i liked it because i work for verizon, i would have got the lte version.
As stated, this thread is for those who wanted to know why i liked it , silly troll.
Sorry folks, it made me giggle reading those comments.
My sensation is fine. Unless quad core phones start to come out now. The nexus got so many flaws and it's overwhelming too
That's just my opinion
you had yours too

then dont come in the thread .... its nice to see some comparisons between phones
I just bought my GN from mobile daily steals. Hasn't been shipped yet. How much are mint condition sensations selling for at present?
Thank you for the short review.
I'm currently considering getting the Motorola RAZR or the Galaxy Nexus in white.
Just can't shake the feeling that it would prolly be stupid of me to buy now, when we got new flagship phones from HTC or Samsung just around the corner.
They'll prolly announce something new at CES, so let's see
Galaxy nexus all the way..
Typical response from Sensation owners who will call you a troll if you ever say any device is better than the Sensation. Ignore them, they are absolutely ignorant. I appreciate the honest review and it seems like the same things I would notice if I switched over to the GN.
