I was thinking that a Generic Android Tablet Discussion thread would be a good idea. No matter the brand , maker size etc. Talk about them here.
Im debating between the Archos 101 and waiting to see if the Moto tab is good.
Whats Out There
I have been keeping a keen eye out for the variety of higher end tablets and here is what I have sort of come up with so far:
Samsung Tablet (7")
Motorola Stingray (10")
Viewsonic viewpad (7")
LG Optimus pad
SteamTV Elocity pad (7")
Archos Family of pads (3"-10")
They all have there merits, and the minor things that make them not so great. But here is a list of the gamot of features you can look for. Some of the tablets have alot of them, some have none, its basically what you want to do with it:
3G
WIFI
GPS
Bluetooth 2.1 or 3.0
Capacitive Screen
USB port(s)
(Micro) SD card slot
HDMI
G-Sensor
Accelerator meter
Geomagnetic sensor
Light Sensor
Front Camera
Back Camera
Google Apps Integration
NVIDA Tegra 2 versus 1GHx CPU w/ GPU
1024 x 600 resolution versus 800 x 480
RAM
Disk Space
Version of Android (2.2 now 3.0 later)

I know they are poppping out of the woodwork now. My biggest thing is that the majority are really expensive. Like the new Toshiba announced today is $540. THat is why Either the Cruz or Archos will match all my criteria. But the nice thing is that there seems to be a ton of different options.
Toshiba Folio 100
10.1-inch capacitive touchscreen
1024 x 600
Android 2.2 (Froyo)
NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor
16 GB internal storage (32 GB available SD expansion)
Adobe Flash 10.1
1.3 MP front-facing camera
Mini-HDMI
USB 2.0
Bluetooth 2.1
WLAN (802.11)
Mobile broadband (available Q1 2011)
I've been disappointed with the IFA ones as almost all of them have 3G which means here, onerous data contracts or ridiculous prices w/o.
Archos underwent feature regression(e.g. no GPS), and has some whacked prices for the 70 & 101. The rest seem kind of useless to me too small and at least the smallest two don't have any way of expanding storage which makes them kind of useless as anything other than a portable music player.
The Viewsonic is the Olivepad one? Didn't seem to be all that great.
Toshiba Folio MIGHT have been nice, but that Tegra will likely make it expensive.
...just too many hawking 3G and not enough that have useful extras like higher res cameras, GPS, mics, and maybe bluetooth... i.e. I'm just meh'ed by IFA offerings... Witstech A81-E is still looking good and they just got another new fw release 8/31...
Good catch, forgot the toshiba one. Here is what I am looking for a tablet:
3G (mainly so I can have google apps)
7" Display
Capacitive screen (OMLED prefered)
1024 x 600
Android 2.2 upgradeable to android 3.0
front camera
1 GHz CPU (perferably the tegra 2)
GPU (if no NVIDIA CPU)
front camera (dont care about a back one)
A-GPS
Bluetooth (at least 2.1)
WIFI B/G/N
USB
8+ GB internal storage
SD card slot is nice but not manditory
HDMI is nice but not manditory
Which matches up with the samsung tab, but the British price I found had it at over 600 British pounds, which converts to over 1000 US dollars.

Damn that is expensive.
Im mainly looking for a ereader, web surfer, watch some videos on trips, and check my gapps when on wifi.
Check out the stream tv elocity pad. No 3g, but no gps ether. the reason why everyone puts on 3g is because it's the only way to get google apps on it, until google changes their requirements for google apps.

My wishlist is 2ghz processor at least 50gb harddrive maybe even (dare I say it) windows 7. I would like my tablet to replace my laptop. Android just isn't ready yet.
I saw talks of honeycomb "here on the samsung tablet. That might be nice . Or that isn't going to be outdated in a few months

I think a 2Ghz CPU, as of right now, is over powered for android. I have a Gentouch78 tablet that runs at 600MHz and it seems to run OK. My 1GHz nexus one has had no issues, and I have it multi tasking several apps at once sometimes. It will get really hot, especially when I toss the car charger on it while its doing all that, but never seen it slow down to unresponsiveness. As for the HDD space. I dont use mine much for multi media, so 50gb would be overdoing it for me. Just the ability to have an SD card slot would be enough for me, that right there is 32 gb.
Now dealing with the android OS itself, this is where things are starting to get wierd. You have 2.2, which is really a phone OS, you have 3.0 which is really a tablet OS, and so the current samsung tablet is supposed to be 2.2 and will get 3.0, but now this 3.5 is where it gets confusing. Some of the stuff I have been reading is stating that 3.5 is going to be an entirely different OS completly, or at least have an entirely different usage beyond that of a tablet or cell phone. And that you will have to buy an entirely new piece of hardware to use it because samsung already said their current tablet wont get 3.5 when it comes out, but i twill get 3.0. This is making me think that 3.5 may be the google chrome OS, which from what I am hearing I am not a total fan of. So basically, the idea as I understand it, is that the hardware will just be the input/output device and all the applications will be stored on teh cloud as well as the work being done will be done on the cloud. This is all nice and dandy until either 1) everyone gets on all at once and bogs down the system or 2) the cloud or network goes down and the device is worthless. Thats why I like android right now. If you have no data connection you can still do work. Now some things on android that do run off the cloud, like the GPS, if you need to reroute and you loose the data connection, since all the work is done on the back end you cant get anywhere until the data connection comes back.
Since Android is a full fledge Linux OS I think it can do whatever you need it to do, you just need to port the apps over. So i think it can replace a laptop, but there will always be certain things that make a laptop easier to use that are unrelated to the android OS, like a real keyboard. With phones, for instance, I still feel more comfortable texting on a physical keyboard on my blackberry then I do on the virtual keyboard on my nexus one. Now can I develope a web page, photoshop some images and toss them on the web page, with android? If they ported the apps over then sure why not, the physical keyboard will just make it easier. But as soon as you start talking windows 7 you are changing the entire hardware requirements (ARM CPU versus an x86 CPU) which will allow you to run your favorite web development software and photo editing software, and now your 50gb of disk space will be all chewed up with the OS and applications but no room for media, and with the new hardware requirements the price goes up (not like the samsung tab isnt expensive either) but then the bottom line is its still awkward to use because of the lack of a physical keyboard.
Now I am just using web development/photo editing as an example, simplier tasks, like email and web surfing, will require less and are easily done on the android OS. But the bottom line is to use the right tool for the right job, outline your requirements and find a solution that best fits your needs. I believe that android will be a decent laptop replacement if all your doing with your laptop is surfing the web and sending email but if your trying to do less casual stuff, like photo editing and web development, then android right now is obviously not enough, but in the future it might be. It goes back to the age old question, does hardware push the software industry, or does software push the hardware industry?

Hmmm.... looks like they took a screenshot of an android VM running on ubuntu and photoshopped it into their device. If they don't have any pictures of the tablet in action, I'd be really dubious...
Finally I ordered this one, so will post some review when it arrives.
So I tested tablet I ordered few weeks ago and realized that this is the same device as Advent Vega. I test quadrant benchmark and got 2200 points without any customization of rom.
Screen is nice and response is fast. I can recommend this one.

I have a htc touch pro that i want to gut and place in a htc g1 case a white new one. I have a non working htc g1 and i want to use that touch screen and the question i have the touch pro has a 528 mhz processor and 512 of rom and 288 of ram. I want to add the g1's 256 of rom and 192 of ram the the touch pro to have 768 mb of rom and 480 mb of ram is this possible. Also is there a way to use the g1's 528 mhz processor to make the phone a dual processor phone 2 528 mhz processors to make it super fast. Any help schematics guidance would be awesome.......
Thanks
Matt
No offense but. What are you smoking?
Resolution on both devices is different. So video chip versus screen incompatibilities would arise. Main board could not accommodate having or stacking 2 different ram chips. Also main board could not even identify or utilize 2 processors. Do you have extensive knowledge of mounting or removing surface mounted integrated circuits? Watch video below and wait till he shows the penny. And its way easier to mount an ic versus trying to remove one with out damaging main board or the ic.
good day.
Theres got to be a way whether its getting a new board and buying ram and rom chip sets and and mounting an existing processor or buying a new one as well. I figure if i replace rom and ram chips the phones existing os should remain intact or at least i think it would. Its an idea to build a phone with the hardware you want then unlock and flash an os of choice to it. I would love to find a gig ram chip and a gig rom chip and place a faster processor in it but i have a 528 pn hand.
You're proposing concepts that exist in pc building and modding. That just doesn't translate to mobile devices. Yes there are some older mods where you could send your device to a technician and he would turn your 64mb device to a 128mb plus that came with a noticeably higher battery drain. But I couldn't even imagine trying to unsolder the estimated 110 legs (which are about 5 times the size of a human hair) of a processor and expect that it would work after mounting it on another main board that may not be expecting it. Why do you think repair facilities just throw the mobo away and mount a new one or replace device. Because the guy hunting down the multiple micro ic's that might be bad and replacing them would get paid as much as a surgeon.
good day.
I am looking to purchase a G Tablet to use for work to capture signatures on a pdf etc... However I was also looking at the http://www.amazon.com/Superpad-Tabl...XDEQ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1300477511&sr=8-2
as I could use this as a way to program Cisco routers in the field plus do some testing on the network.
So I guess my question is which one is better.
Of course I know both will need some new ROM's and some other software added to them and whatnot. But The second one seems to me that its a bit nicer that it has a RJ45 connection on it. The reviews are pretty good for the G Tablet though. So I am not sure what to do. If it is possible to add a USB to RJ45 dongle for the G Tablet I am for sure down for that too.
So I guess what I am hoping for is that someone here has had both or knows enough about both that they can give me some input as to what would be my better choice.
Thanks,
Nathan

Be wary when you are dealing with a product that has an unnamed producer and the specs don't even tell you what kind of processor it has. Usually, these devices were pumped out super cheap in a factory in china somewhere for them to make a quick buck or two.
The other thing is we have no idea what kind of users those reviewers for the superpad are. They could be dumbasses for all we know. With the gtab, at least we know real devs have been working with it and have given it their approval.
Go with the gtab, dude.

I couldn't have said it better....
thats what i was thinking... but the thing about the superpad i like is the fact of the built in RJ45 connection to be able to telnet in to cisco switches in the field.
edit:
just found this... seems like if this generic tablet has a micro usb to rj45 connection theres gotta be a way to get it to work
http://www.aliexpress.com/product-g...3G-Camera-HDMI-1GMHz-DDR-512-wholesalers.html
I just went through those reviews at the link you gave us. Sure, there's lots of 4-5 stars. But the reviews are not helpful at all. Single phrase reviews are useless when we're dealing with something like this.
I'd rather spend $350 on something I know that works and have lots of dev support.
I'm sorry, but I'm not very trusting of these so-called companies in China. I've known too many people who got scammed by them. Here's the thing. If something happens, what are you going to do? They're sitting all the way in China. How are you going to get them to honor their warranty or send you replacement?
Processor Type: ZT-180 not support android honeycomb 3.0. If it isn't important, a variant under the reference above the best.
But even in this case I would pay attention on archos 101
Slatedroid has an entire section devoted to the Superpad/Flytouch 2 .
Alot of information and reviews by people who actually own and use the tablet.
There is also a Small Business Section on their with a shop named BuyADroid. They carry the tablet and have supplied alot of members their with tablets, very reliable and shipping times aren't too bad either.
But if you want info on the superpad, slatedroid is the place to start looking.

I would have to agree with ikoolkid but if u really want to know then:
1. Make sure your motherboard supports the processor you're trying to install (socket type, bus frequency and size),
2. Since you're trying to implement ddr3 ram, make sure the motherboard supports it, otherwise, don't waste your money buying ddr3 ram modules.
3. For graphics card, make sure your motherboard supports it.
4. make sure your power supply has the capacity of giving power to all components, add the power requirements of all devices and that should be a guide of how big u want that power supply.
5. read the specs for the motherboard and you'll find out if all those parts are compatible.

Just at a glance, I'd examine the case and PSU.
You want a case with good ventilation, and for that price, I doubt that's a great case - but pictures would help. You want one with cable management space too.
And your PSU will likely not support a decent GPU.
Not to be a jerk - but I built my first computer recently and unless this post is weird spam, I recommend you do research until you understand what you're doing.

I've done some research on the compability of CPU, MB and RAM and they seems to be compatible, it has (by the asrock site specs)
- 1 x PCI Express 2.0 x16 slot (PCIE1 @ x16 mode)
- 1 x PCI Express 2.0 x1 slot
- 1 x PCI slot
for a new graphic card, but in my opinion, looking at the card, put a nice 2 slot graphic card would be a problem because of the space.
For the HD its ok, the MB has 6 SATA ports so fully compatible. As Pennycake said, the PSU should be more powerfull if u need a decent graphic card, otherwise for the combination u wrote it would be perfect.
Like others have pointed out this is not the place for this post we are a mobile device developers forum not a computer help website, please use the off topic area
It is compatible
Although of the off topic area might be better suited to this, I'll answer it anyway. So the main components that you need to worry about, the CPU and the motherboard, are both compatible. Be careful though, I have AMD processors can be quite easy to burn out if the processor isn't inserted correctly. Everything else should be fine. Don't be too concerned about heat with that case, you are powering a dedicated graphics card and by the time you do I don't think you will be aiming for a demanding high end one anyway. Cheap power supplies can be issue, so you be wary of any sudden shut downs, as it could be that in the future. Other than that good luck with your first PC build. Every one after this will be a breeze.
Oh before I forget, make sure that you have Sata cables for the hard drive, they usually come with the motherboard, but that isn't always the case.

Cheaper what? I am not sure they could go much cheaper.
Yea make sure the motherboard socket size matches the cup, everything else is pretty cross compatible. You don't want to order the wrong cpu and be like aw grits I ordered the wrong part and wait another week.
The cpu and the motherboards socket definitely marry up, so that isn't an issue. Like I said though, be very careful with installing AMD cpus.
Hi, first .Please forgive my poor english. I will do my best to explain my problem.
In my long searches on the net for a good decent price chinese tablet to use on my laptop side, I noticed that there is always something missing : If the ram is enough than it can not adress more than 16GB or 32GB, if it can, than there is no GPS, if there is, than the camera is crap and if it has more than three of the above it can cost a fortune. and I can go on for ever.
I am looking for good tablet that can act as a laptop Substitute\fill in, that has : 2GB ram preferably more on the 3GB or 4GB direction, can adress at least 64GB or 128GB memory card, and\or an external hard drive, 9.7 -10.5 inch screen size, all the usual input out ports : USB 3, hdmi, ext, BT ,wifi, 3g, if there can be dual boot OK, quad or octa core cpu, can be software upgradable (yes, this is an issue with some devices).
didnt find anything that came even close. and I am willing to spend around $480
Perhaps I daemand to much, and there is no device that can do most of what I want ?
I would very much appreciate any answer that can direct my in the right direction.
Thank you.
Y.
