Hello everyone,
I looked around all of the internal forums and general appeared to be the best.
In short I am looking for a good dual sim phone that doesn't need a soft reboot to switch between sims. I have to be able to get calls on both, essentially looking like call waiting is working.
Here are must haves:
Unlimited ring tone assignment (the dual I have now limits me to 10 ringtones). I have a ton of referral sources calling as well as personal calls and I need to know who I can ignore by sound and who I have to answer.
External memory SD or Micro (for the ringtones) unless it has a large enough internal
Dual sim of course...
AT&T service currently, and would prefer to stay but not married to them. Lesser of 5 evils basically (1900MHZ)
My preferences:
I've had my fun playing with all of the stuff from here for windows mobile, but I just can't take the slow speed anymore. I am open to a smartphone or non smartphone, but if it is a smartphone I need it to react nearly instantly.
I would prefer a flip phone, mainly because I'm getting frustrated with applying new screen covers to protect my screen so often. So I guess I should say, if it's a touch screen non flip then I'd like to be able to buy 50 precut screen covers out the gate (not really concerned about price). (currently have a Fuze and I'm sick of the snail speed and still can't find the precut screen covers - although I have determined how to increase speed, and will do so once I get my new phone... drive 80 MPH and throw it out the window!)
I really think that about covers it. When I do a Google search for a dual sim I just end up at one of a hundred Chinese wholesale sites, and most of their phones have their own OS with tons of limitations.
Thanks ahead of time! (btw price isn't a big issue, although less cost is always better)
So in browsing through old posts here I found Expansys and in looking at them I found this...Samsung B5702 ... it may very well be what I want. The price seems pretty over the top for a non smart phone, but I'm guessing it's cheaper elsewhere... Does anyone happen to have this phone who could give me their take on it? Thank you,
So I bought the LG Ks660 from Amazon... could have paid about $30 less through another lesser known, but I figured it's worth the $30 to know I'd get it and it would be easy to return if it blows.
I paid $260 for it, which is about $160 more than your typical dual sim/dual standby Chinese cells but I hope it has what I need. The one dual I have from China limits the ringtones, which to me is a must these days on phones.
I'll post the results of my first few days of testing in case anyone else has two cell lines but is sick of carrying the two phones. Due to arrive tomorrow... I had to choose impatient shipping...
I'm pretty sure the G2x doesn't come from the factory with NFC hardware. I've read about a few bolt-on solutions (NFC implemented through microSD, SIM or external stick-on hardware), but most of what I've found seems out of date. Is anyone aware of what's out there today or on the horizon?
You know, because my day-to-day functionality isn't already dependent enough on my cell phone.

Thanks. The first link is pretty dated, but the second is encouraging.
i searched through the internet but there wasnt a solid answer to this question i could find.
the question is, which tablets have sim card support and if so how can i tell if the ones in retailers are different from ones offered from carriers.
like are there 2 models of galaxy tab 2 10.1? one with sim slot and one without? and could someone compile a list of all the current and popular tablets with sim card slots?
A tablet that does phone and uses AT&T or TMobil (assuming you're in the US) has a SIM slot. The SIM is used for the phone portion of the tablet on GSM phones. If the tablet doesn't have a phone, or it has a CDMA (Sprint, Verizon) phone, it has no use for a SIM card.
Well, of course. So the question would be "which tablets include a phone device ?" Nice try for an answer, dude ! BTW, it's not absolutely exact, as I'll explain below.
Ok, then, most SMALL tablets (7" or less) generally include a SIM slot because they allow you to phone without you looking as if you stuck a frying pan over your ear. This includes for instance the HTC Flyer and all Samsung Galaxy Tabs, just to cite the ones I know for sure, but of course there may be many others.
Classic "large" (10" or about) tablets can have a SIM slot too, even if NOT being able to phone. The reason is they allow 3G networking. If we are to cite another example, there is one on some Asus EeePads (not all models, so be careful when choosing).
Now the Eeepad is a bit special, as it has a true PC processor instead of most other models scaled-down 1 GHz ARM phone processors (the same my good old HD2 has already), and when you attach the separate mechanical keyboard to the tablet, you also get classical USB ports, allowing you to add a 3G dongle in case you bought a SIM-less model.
Apart form the Asus that's a bit out of the crowd (though not being more expensive BTW), you'll then have to check for the SIM slot when looking for a tablet.
Your question is of general interest IMHO. It wouldn't be a bad idea to keep a list of tablets with SIM slots to help people choosing, either here or on a dedicated topic, maybe put elsewhere (though I can't find where right now).
Now if you'd ask me which tablet I would choose if I had to, I'd answer "none" at first thought. The reason is, I do need a mobile device, but it has to do ALL : phoning, taking notes and noting down meetings, firing alarms, email and web browsing, remote access to the company's billing and accounting software, and my Word and Excel documents handy. And all this, of course, has to be with me all the time.
So, of course, the 4.3" format is just perfect. So why would I want a tablet ? The answer is just "I don't want one. Period". Now, why would I would want one anyway ? Well, maybe because it would be more confortable to show documents to other people, or just to get a larger workspace, after all.
So maybe the 7" format would be just fine. This, plus the fact it's able to phone, and the special stylus, always made me think about the HTC Flyer. Because I love my HTC HD and HD2, so I may stay sentimentally linked to HTC, so I probably won't be absolutely neutral here. There's also the Samsung galaxy Note, why not ? But if it's just for a larger phone with a stylus, is it worth the change ? Well, maybe for the stylus. The 7" tablet also still allows to phone whithout looking completely weird, though the limit is reached there IMHO.
Anyway, the point is, I want only ONE device to do ALL, and I want it with me everywhere and every time. That's why my HD2 is always in my belt pouch. I wouldn't want a phone PLUS a tablet to bring along. That's why I'm not really considering buying one, despite I really miss the stylus, as I often have to draw sketches and using the finger is just way too imprecise.
Now there's an interesting outsider, and it's once again from Asus : they threw some weird concept, a tablet containing a detachable Android phone ! All documents automatically synchronize when you stuff the phone into the hatch behind the screen, so you can actually always have the exact same and up-to-date documents on each, allowing you to bring and use any of them (or both !) according to what you're going to do and where you're going to. A concept at least worth a look IMHO.

Very good input. The truth is i'm a sales rep at TigerDirect in Canada. And whenever a customer asks me if the tablet they like has sim support, i'd have to give them a general unsure answer. It's unfortunate because not all tablets have it, and the specs on most sites never really specify either. Furthermore, it's not very realistic to open a sealed box to check if there is. Especially if the customer might not buy. I think it'd be great if everyone on the forums contribute and compile a list of model numbers of tablets that contain a sim card of some sort.
as a user ot the samsung galaxy tab 7.7 i would recomed your customers one of the 7" tablets there are wlan only and wlan/3g devices for each model. with a 3g module it allowes you to send sms or use it as a general mobile phone.
the bigger tablets only use the sim for a mobile 3g internet connection not for sms or phone, like the 10.1.
the wlan only version of the 7.7 is the gt-p6810 and with 3g its gt-p6800.
in canada the tab should be available very easy, but in my country i had little problems to get one of the 7.7 (the old ones 7.0 , 7.0+ , 7.0 2 are easy to get)
because apple sued samsung and said that the 7.7 looks like an ******* ipad.
Oh, maybe we should launch a contribution to offer Apple staff some glasses ?
OK, you did sum up what I thought : 7" tablets either allow phoning or are WLan only, and 10" tablets or bigger are either 3G or WLan only.
Each maker apparently offers both, for the same generic model number, so customers (and sellers) have to be vary careful about small details printed on the box and/or small sub-numbers in the model reference that may help finding more information on the web (preferably on makers' websites rather than half-informed resellers').
It's quite a puzzle, so maybe opening a Wiki here on XDA to list the "good" references could help people sorting things out.
Hi Guys!
I am the proud owner of a Moto G from Germany. Unfortunately there are no plans on releasing the dual sim version here in Germany, so I was wondering if maybe the dual sim functionality might already be on board, but hidden.
When you remove the back cover you can see, that there's some plastic where the second sim slot is supposed to be. Has someone maybe opened the back any further an can provide images of what's behind it. Maybe you just have to remove some plastic and it already works. But it might be that you'd have to flash one of the dual sim images (once they come out). I don't really know, but maybe one of you guys does and is willing to share his thoughts or experiments.
Thanks,
Sebastian
I think there isn't a funtional slot for a second sim card. Look at the picture in the link. I'm not allowed to post links (not enough messages). Add a dot after areamobile or google for areamobile moto g teardown.

Thank you for the link. You might be right. It really seems, that the gray plastic part with the contacts for the sim-card ist missing there. You can see them in the image previous to the one you linked to.
It's clearly the same mainboard shared between single/dual sim parts, so I wonder what components, other than the sim reader, are missing from the board... If it is just that than I'm sure many Moto G owners, myself included, would be willing to source the sim reader part and, with a careful soldering session, attach it, flash the appropriate firmware and enjoy being able to use two sims a once (as easy as that... right?? :silly ... particularly those in the UK and US where the dual sim Moto G isn't as easy to come by, short of an expensive import.
Naturally if there are other passives (smd resistors/caps) that have been omitted from the single sim flavour of the board, that would probably place the effort required beyond being worth the hassle...
maybe...
that said, I'm a sucker for hacking a device to give additional functionality...
Any more detailed board shots of the Moto G out there, other than the teardown shown. Ideally looking for shots around the location of the 'potential' second sim (ideally with shield removed)?
Cheers,
Graysters
OK, to answer my own question,
I plucked up the courage to take the back off and take a closer look, and as feared, the are about 12 passive smd components that are present around the first sim connector, but not the, absent, second. it wouldn't be impossible to add these missing components, but we'd need to identify what each of them are. it may even be possible to 'jumper' them (i.e.just short the appropriate pins where the component would be sat to electrically connect the sim to whatever ASIC it ends up talking to), as seems to be a common practice for many mobile phones to fix sim connection issues... trouble is, we're still working a bit blind. I'd love to see a schematic for this phone...
One other issue that comes to mind: I'm pretty sure the dual sim Moto G would have two IMEI numbers to allow both sims to be in use at the same time, which begs the next question. is it possible to transfer a IMEI number from an old (and no longer in use) mobile phone to use for the second sim in the Moto G. if so, where is the IMEI stored on android devices, and is this modifiable, or is it in some read only memory?
It's not looking particularly feasible at the moment, and there's no point continuing this investigation, unless we can positively answer the above IMEI question...
I wish Motorola would just sell the dual sim Moto G more widely!
For anyone else that's interested, I've attached two snaps showing:
A shot of the single sim moto-g mainboard around sim1: (moto_g_single_sim_sim1.jpg)
A shot around the blank sim2: (moto_g_single_sim_sim2.jpg)
Note the 13 missing smd components around the blank shield... would need to figure out what these are... (these must be common interfacing components for a sim reader that are shared with many phones... anyone got any pointers to circuit diagrams of sim readers in other phones for reference??)
Still no wiser on the 2nd IMEI situation (see my post above)...
Cheers,
Graysters

half decent job pays €30/hour if you spend more than 5 hours researching and trying to modify your phone, plus the cost of parts, you should have just bought a second phone, or sourced a dual sim version from ebay. I love these kind of projects, but sadly you have already shown it to be too much work to be worth it

Interesting thread.
I am interested in the dual sim version of the phone and also possible hardware modification to enable this feature. Does anybody know if the dual sim version is the active type where both sims can be active at the same time in the phone and calls can be switched between one sim and the other without dropping either call?
I am surprised dual sim phones are not in higher demand in the UK. I have always expected this to be the future for business/personal users. Nobody likes carrying around two mobile phones really. What is the difference in cost in the regions where one can purchase the dual sim version, vs the single sim version? I suspect it is not a huge amount anyway, so it is more about the availability world wide.
In terms of hardware modifications...as you said above Grayster, it will depend on the IMEI issue first and foremost?
It's definitely been a while since last I've been here. Anyway, I currently have the first Razer phone which I love but it's starting to run on its last leg, which sucks. Because of this I've been trying to search for a new phone with similar specs since it already fit my needs but with other things added. I honestly care more about performance and storage over the things that are marketed nowadays like the high end cameras. So a few things I'm looking for in a phone, though I don't know if it exist now, are:
3.5mm headphone jack
micro USB (I absolutely HATE USB-C)
micro sd-card slot
spec (storage, Ram, etc.) similarly to what I have now, the Razer phone
Does anyone know if a phone with all of some of these? I know that Japan kind of has the largest phone market, so I'd search there but don't know how/where. If anyone has any suggestions I'd greatly appreciate it.

Wow, that's a tough one.
The mirco-USB thing is almost impossible to find. Oneplus would fit for storage/performance , but not for Jack, mirco-USB and SD Card.
Xiaomi tho could fit the headphone jack, and the SD card, it has also some good performances. So if you search, I think Xiaomi would be great for you.
