I've very new to all this, having used a non-PDA/smartphone (SE637) for many years before purchasing a Tilt. While quite PC-literate, I find myself very intimidated with all this. I read as much as my mind allows before requiring large quantities of diet-coke -- then I need a nap to calm myself down from the soda before reading any more, or my head explodes.
I think that I need a new ROM, but I'm not sure why! Everywhere I read, that's what I'm told.
This community is very knowledgable and seems very helpful. As this appears to be more for developers than users like me, I'm hesitant to ask my question for fear of offending a developer, which isn't my intent. I'm looking for information that might assist me in choosing which ROM to use.
I suppose that I want the phone to run faster, be easier to use/see (I don't see as well as I did 50 years ago... ), and have the latest of whatever is the best at the moment, spending as little as possible in the process. A truly never-ending story...
Before you start flashing decide what's important to you. Are you looking for a certian look & feel? Is fuctionality more important or do you want spped/stability?
Then research the different Roms, most include feature lists & screen shots in the first few posts of the thread.
So what it really comes down to is a lot of reading.
Oh and be sure to HardSPL your device BEFORE doing anything.
Also, like kyphur said read and do the hardSPL first but for me I found it's most helpful just to try some. Download a few, flash them give it a whirl and see what you like. Once you try a few you'll find options and programs you love and will start looking for roms that have what you need and more importantly what you don't like. And if you never find anything you love then start cooking. There are a lot of great wikis here to guide you step by step.
Hope this helps.
Start with Wiki first. Once you hardspl, load your first rom. You will find how easy it is and start to flash more roms like crazy. Experiment, and then you will find what you like. After flashing your first rom, you will realize how much better your new rom is compare to the stock rom.
just start off by choosing a few roms...then read about it as the chef would describe their rom...see which one fits u most...then make sure u read teh wiki and faq before u actually start ur flashing...to make sure nothing goes wrong...and then if that doesnt fit u..try another rom..but all the roms here...are better than stock for sure
I knew this wasn't going to be easy... Rating system anyone? I suppose I'm also nervous about doing a first flash. What about CID and SIM unlocking?

HardSPL removes the Carrier lock (CID) from your phone. As for SIM unlocking, I haven't bothered yet because I don't travel anywhere that AT&T doesn't provide service.
Once you've done your share of reading, if you are still confused about what type of ROM you are looking for, check out whatever the latest Dutty release is at that point in time. Dutty's Kaiser ROMs are probably the most popular on XDA.
I use a [somewhat] clean ROM myself, with the bare minimum preloaded. This way I can install what I need, and not worry about wasted space for programs I don't use.

j/p
however, for Christ sake, please have hardspl installed.
Just pick one by reading the changelogs usually located in the first couple of posts.

Is there a Tilt-specific version (currently with ATT's latest released ROM) of HardSPL that avoids all the headaches I'm reading about?
I'm still not sure how this works, but if I were to go Dutty's, should I look for UC - from what I'm gathering, I could then get a minimum ROM version, choose what I want added, then somehow update that bare ROM to include my choices, keeping all my settings in the process? A hard reset, if needed, would restore the new UC basic ROM along with what I added -- do I have this right?

The version of HardSPL required is determined by what version SPL that is on your phone. If you reboot your phone in bootloader mode, you will see a version number for SPL. As long as you follow the directions for that version, you will be fine.

Thanks, NotATreoFan. I found info on what a bootloader is, and this is the info displayed:
KAIS1*0
SPL-1.93.0000
CPLD-8
What should my search criteria look like to find the HardSPL that I need to use?

Thanks for the help, XtreMe_G. Just so I have this straight, out of the 4 files listed, I only need to download and run JumpSPL1.93-KAIS.zip and I'm done? The Tilt is now prepared to accept any appropriate ROM?

You need JumpSPL to get started, and then you need HardSPL to flash. 2 zip files total. Memorize the steps prior to starting, and do NOT skip any of them for any reason...
man...I thought I gave you advice yesterday on what to do. Literally, thousands of people have hardspl their roms just fine. Even a couple blonde girls in this forum have done it. It is not that hard and you shouldn't have too much trouble. Just follow the instructions and you will be just fine. After your first flash, you will move couple levels up in knowledge.

Will do ask you suggest. Just a thought... by doing this, will anything on my phone be affected (programs, settings, etc.)? I'm, obviously nervous about all this, and while I will follow your instructions with hardSPL, I'm not yet ready to flash a ROM.

Your information was very valuable. I just needed a little more detail to help calm my nerves...
Hello. I'm trying to learn how to root my htc magic wich i'm going to buy soon, i would like to know wich tecnic to use because i'm confused since they are totaly diferent.
is this one enought? and also will let me install other roms as all apps? hxxp://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Magic_Rooting
Or i must also use this one: hxxp://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Sapphire_Hacking
I've been reading and since the pages lead to one another i'm asking. Thank you!
Just from briefly going through them, they seem the same but one of them gives a lot more detail and step by step instructions.
What's your SPL? And if you're on Cupcake 1.5, you should give this a try.
http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/29/how-to-root-the-htc-magic-in-one-click/
(They have an old recovery image on that site, make sure you get the latest)
It's ridiculously easy and doesn't require all the commands on the desktop. But to be honest, all the methods aren't that difficult.
ps. Make sure you flash the right recovery image, read read read! Pick the wrong one and possible brick! Check if you're on 32A / B and yeah. You'll probably see all this reading anyways
Oh and I just noticed that you're going to buy one soon.. If you're from rogers then
But yaeh, other than that the two methods you're looking at are similar. I would probably follow http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Sapphire_Hacking as it's step by step (When I was a noob I was so confusd with everything lol)
pm me if you need help and I'll do what I can
Hi all
I feel like i am going round in circles trying to get my 32b magic rooted. Ive tried all sorts of methods even buying relentless rooter magic, but after lots of helpful emails i was told i have a perfected spl1.33.0007.
I was then told my problem would be solved by creating a gold card. I did this following the unlockr guide. Then went back to trying to use relentless rooter but I still cannot get the phone rooted.
I would appreciace any guidance at this point as I really dont know what else to do. Some of the help people give is great but it assumes a certain level of android knowledge that I have not got and will not ever have.
Thanks in advance fellas. I hope you can help as I love my phone
Regards
Del
have you tried follow these instructions?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=548218
to make sure your not on perfect spl.
for rooting check this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=547133
then you should be able to fix it
Sorry to be stupid but where do i get the following from?
* an non-perfected SPL (preferably an engineerings SPL).
* a ROM with a version that is HIGHER than your current ROM version.
Im sure this is all straighforward stuff to all you guys who do this all the time but it just seems like one obstacle after another for me
Thanks again for the help
i don't know much about the 32b version, but the second thread i posted to you is the one to use, try read very good the first post in it, cause the first thread i posted he tells 32b user to go to the second thread, so try study the second thread thats what i can do to help, hope you find something in it.
Again please excuse my stupidity but i have not a clue what ROM is appropriate for my phone. This is the problem that I always encounter, that others assume that your level of knowledge is comparable to theirs. I know im not a total moron but this is a whole new language to me and the last thing i wanna do is ruin my phone. It seems the more i read on forums etc the more i get confused as there are a seemingly infinite array of different methods to get your phone rooted.
well can you provide info on which spl radio you have now first?
He mentioned in the original post he had perfected spl1.33.0007.
How about telling us what you did with the goldcard process, what happened and what went wrong? Any errors received that you can tell us etc will help us to help you.
just wondering cause he messed with the phone after getting the info of perfected spl so just wanted to be clear what there is to work with so he can get a working good phone
I followed the gold card process on the unlockr webby and all went fine. No issues there at all.
Im now stuck as to what to do next. I bought relentless rooter software and the guy on support has been helpful. Just wondering what my next port of call should be. Like I said im no Mr Android but Im not totally clueless either. I would just like it if someone could tell me what should be the correct/best/simplest procedure for getting my phone rooted and getting the best/closest ROM to 2.0/2.1
Sorry to be a pain but there is so much info out there its really difficult to determine whats right and whats wrong.
BTW Ive got 2 magics so if a totally brick one, Ill know to definitely stop. Unfortunately they both have the same spl
Thanks again in advance
Just tried another method from the relentless support. Ive put SAPP.nbh on my goldcard and restarted with vol down and power. Tried to apply the image and got an error of
model id incorrect!
Update fail
Do you want to reboot device?
any more advice please?
first off im not trying to be a **** here... but..if your having this much trouble rooting, and you admit you dont know much, then why are you bothering rooting??
if you root and get a custom rom on your phone, you will NEED to know how to update said rom, as you will not get support from your carrier.
rooting is not hard, there are MANY guides out there that hold your hand and walk you threw rooting, installing rom ect ect...
for you i would recommend cyanogen mod (www.cyanogenmod.com) JUST because it is stable and works great.. i dont think you want a rom like super d , cdsi , fasttest or something like that where you will probably have to update your rom somewhat often.
please see this guide and READ it fully, its not hard to understand or to follow....just make sure you are on a 32B, if you are not then this guide will not work..
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_MT3G/Magic_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod
also you are looking for a rom that is 2.0/2.1, first off they are not fully functional, there are issues with all 2.0/2.1 roms out there (some are great dont get me wrong, but in my mind not fully functional) so again i would recommend cyanogenmod its based on 1.6 but has bits and pieces of eclair(2.0) in it. before you try a 2.0/2.1 rom i would say get root first, run cyanogenmod and go from there..
again.. im not trying to be a ****.. but it really isnt hard rooting.. and hearing you say you dont know anything is kind of rediculous.. i came into the android scene not knowing anything, its easy to learn if you want to, if you want the easy way out without learning then dont root...
edit: Im sorry i sound harsh, but i still stand behind what i said.. please please please try the cyanogenmod wiki guide, and also please post EXACTLY what sys ver your running, which carrier your on, and confirm please the SPL..
i started out knowing nothing too, but reading and do what guys say in their guides gets you far, and when keep wanting to tell in every post (i know nothing) is kinda saying, don't use custom roms cause if something goes wrong, you will be more fustrated and angry on the android system (also not trying to be rude, but think about it, do you really want to root?)
In the normal course of events I am capable of following the simple instructions found on forums like this to do whatever I need. In the past I have chipped my xbox and flashed my 360, but I am really struggling with my phone. The reason I went for the relentless piece of software was because it was supposed to be simple.
As far as I was concerned I was having a problem following the instructions until I was told I had a perfected SPL. Thats why I had so much difficulty in the past getting it rooted. I thought using relentless might help me out in that respect. It didnt.
So I then find out that I need to create a gold card. Got that sorted ok, then proceeded with the root process. All systems stopped again as I get model id incorrect error. I posted on here to see if anyone else was having the same problems and would be willing to help.
I am really thankful for the suggestions so far and if anyone has any more I will endevour to use them. But my main problem is that there is so much info out there its difficult to work out whats right and wrong especially if you are encountering problems like I am. Ive seen many videos and read many tutorials on how to root so I know it should be straightforward but that has not been my experience thus far
have you tried the wiki link i posted??
start over.. forget everything you have done.. and try that wiki link..
again we need to know your phone model, carrier, spl and sys version(android 1.5, 1.6, ect ect) to move forward if you still are stuck..
Thanks again for your help

You need to make certain that your gold card was made properly. My first attempt at making a goldcard failed for no reason what so ever. The second attempt went fine on the same micro sd card. I would follow the directions of using Flashrec. That process has been flawless due to the fact that it takes advantage of a bug in Android 1.5. It's easy as long as your goldcard was made properly. Good Luck
p.s. once your able to flash an engineering/non-perfected spl, Leave It Alone.

I finally pulled my head out of my ass last night/early this morning and got a handle on what i needed to do. And now I have a rooted magic with a shiny new hero rom on it. Very pleased with myself. Now off to try to get the second one done. Fingers crossed
Thanks everyone for all your help and patience. Its really appreciated
Back to square 1 again. After the excitement of havig a working root and displaying a rather lovely hero rom, I though all was well. So I decided to have a crack at rooting my other magic. During the process which was unsuccessful this time my original rooted decided to shut itself down for no apparent reason. Whe i tried to reboot it would get to the splash screen and no further even though it had been working perfectly happily just hours before.
Any help please?
The details are:
32b ENG S-OFF h
HBOOT-1.33.2005 (SAPP10000)
CPLD-10
RADIO-2.22.19.26I
I rooted using the gold card method and flashed with a hero rom. All the instructins taken from theunlockr.com as I couldnt get the cyanogen wiki instructions to work.
I did try the cyanogen wiki method having already rooted using gold card, but that phone also stops at the splash screen after flashing bot images. I waited several times for 15mins+ but nothing
I would really appreciate some help mainly on my first issue
Thanks in advance
First, I'm sorry if I posted this in the wrong section.
I know this is the G1 area, but need help.
Well, I was looking at some tutorials from TheUnlockr.com and they seem pretty easy on a mytouch 3G. I have successfully installed Cupcake (1.5) on my phone.
But before I do the actual rooting, I wondered if anyone would be so nice to
guide me with installing [ROM] KiNgxKxROM Sense Hybrid Version 2.3 "Back to Work We Go" <11/9/09> - xda-developers onto my mytouch.
I don't know what to do, and I've tried reading the steps but I'm completely lost.
IDK if the steps are for G1 users or mytouch. I hear all these "spl"s and "radio"s and don't know what it is.
All I want is to install that ROM on my phone. the Unlockr says to download the ROM's .zip file and simply flash it, but idk if that's exactly what's required for the above ROM.
Anyone suggest other ROM that has the HERO Sense UI?
and what's a gold card? do I need that?
and I only have a 1GB MicroSD card...idk if that's relevant, thanks so much!
*facepalm
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=519523
well that link doesn't work.
All I'm basically asking is if I can just load the already downloaded "ROM" and simply dragging it to my SD card to be able to install....since it's for the G1 and idk if it's the same process as the mytouch.

I beg to differ. The link does work.
You should read about spls and radios before flashing roms. Anyway, good luck.
It should work in your case....and if it doesnt....no harm done.
So you're saying that I don't need spls?
You do need an spl.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=519523
Yes, it does work. It's a link to a thread stickied in this forum. It's called ***Informative Links*** - Read before clicking "New Thread"
There is no point spoonfeeding you information because you don't *learn* and just end up following a bunch of steps without understanding what you're doing. This greatly increases your chance of doing something wrong just because someone tells you to, this can and does happen, usually unintentionally because a certain step worked for someone else but not for you because your phone can be different in a way you don't yet realise.
You haven't even told us what phone you have, let alone any technical information about it. So, go look into specific information about your handset. Learn about what SPL you have now, this will tell you if you need a goldcard or not (Magic) or whether you need to install the DangerSPL (G1) or not. SPL is very dependent on the radio installed, if you get the versions wrong you will brick your phone. Learn about recovery images and install one on the phone. Depending on ROM, you may have to partition your SD card, which you can do from recovery.
I hope that's enough of a good start for you. If not, I would suggest not taking the risk bricking your phone and just be happy with what you have.

Could you guide me through?
I'm new to this rooting stuff and when I was looking at theUnlockr videos the guy didn't mention anything about SPL, he simply said to drag the ROM into the SD card and then wipe, partition, and flash or something like that.
But since the rom im trying to install is for G1 and Mytouch I'm not sure if the same process is for both or just the G1.
Well, I have a T-Mobile MyTouch 3G with 1.5, IDK about the other stuff, but here's some info I found on my phone:
SAPPHIRE PVT 32B
HBOOT-1.33.0006
RADIO 2.22.19.261
IDK, that's it.

You will need SPL's, a swap partition, etc. etc.
Seems like you only have the stock SD card.
Your device will not even be usable on a daily basis without at least a class 4 microSDHC
Go for a basic Eclair or Donut rom first before you do some serious damage to our phone.
And there literally is a MyTouch3g section... This is a G1 section.. if you're just getting started, you're better off over there.
Oooooooo
Can I run this on sapphire? When's the next update?
I can't even believe this thread is happening....
Hey,
Sorry if this is annoying, but I'm buying a Sensation next week and I'm confused about a few things. I've read a lot of the threads here and I'm still really confused on where to start with this phone. I'm not a total noob to android, as I have a sidekick right now but from the looks of the forums this phone is quite different with stuff like root, custom roms, etc., so I'm pretty much a complete noob with this one. So where do I start with this phone? I'm not sure in what order to do things and for some reasons I'm confused by the guide threads (what order to go in, etc.).
If anyone can help at all that'd be awesome.
Thank you!

That thread is outdated and that s-off method will not work unless the phone is still on GB, if the hboot is 1.17 then you can use that guide, but if the hboot is 1.2x (x stands for any number) then use this tool and read the first post carefully http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1668276
P.S To find hboot take out phone battery and then place it back in and hold the power button and volume down at the same time until you see a white screen, which should show you your hboot version at the top.
Like the person above me said, you first need to find out what Hboot is it. I have just started rooting last week, about few days ago I successfully rooted my Sensation 4G with no problems and installed Custom Rom. If your Hboot is 1.18 or lower, it easier to use the thread given above which is what I used to root my Sensation 4G which it Hboot was 1.18. If your Hboot is 1.2X, it not gonna be as easy. What I did before rooting ever, was find information about rooting, and Custom Roms, recoveries, etc. to learn more about how to root and to do it properly so you don't **** up your phone. If you follow instructions carefully, you will have no problem, trust me, rooting is piece of cake. Here is a thread that will guide you of rooting http://androidforums.com/desire-all-things-root/221212-faq-rooting-updated-7th-april-2012-a.html#14 It will tell you mostly everything about rooting.
