Hi, been away from the forum, as i have just got back from holiday
i am having a prblem with my desire.. i went to florida, left my phone at the theme parks, desire s, zte blade, ipod touch in the car for 8 hours in around 30-40 degrees. since then, my desire s has been faulty.
my touch, and zte work fine, but my desire has a major problem now. it works normal in use, but when i lock it and put it into sleep mode, when i try to unlock it , it will start up the whole phone again. basically, it powers off on its on randomly in sleep mode.
The problem is really annoying. it is also very common on the desire hd..
http://www.google.co.uk/search?sour...360GB360&q=htc+desire+hd+randomly+turning+off
Im running leedroid port from dhd. i thought the rom was the problem, but it isnt. i flashed other roms, hydrogen, but the problem still exists. shoud i test the stock unrooted ROM?
i dont think it is a software fault anyweay. the phone was working fine for 2 weeks running leedroid, then suddenly i have the problem now.
i have emailed htc, and awating a reply now. so will i need to get it repaired? or replaced as a faulty unit?
Hmm.....does sound like the heat has done it in....damn!
Although there are plenty of other countries where the temp is close to this all the time, you would have thought....
Try installing close to stock ROM with no apps installed, (Yes perform wipe). I'd suggest installing battery moniotr widget and get iot to log full details (including apps), force log in sleep mode so that you can at least see when it dies and what temp it's at when it does and what apps are running at the time.
Although does sound like warranty return issue (at least this way you get a new motherboard and possibly even a new device)...(you might want to check the recommended running temp levels in the warranty book first - just so that you get your story straight)
Positive note: at least its still functioning so that you can re-install RUU etc and mask S-OFF before returning it?
ps
Mines done this a couple of time over the last few months...although I always figured that I've hit the buttons in my pocket?

Cheers Ben! Love how your always here to help!
I'll try installing battery monitor widget , and go back to stock, s-on
So do you think it was the heat that damaged the phone? My ipod touch and zte blade were left in the car, but they work 100% fine
I've checked the warranty thingy, it says do not expose battery to 60 degrees or higher.
But to be honest, I dot really know how hot it could get in the car... Florida is very hot!
I'm just waiting for a reply from HTC now
The phone works fine everywhere else, its just this problem.. I tried cooling the phone by switching it off and taking the battery out, and leaving it for an hour.
The thing with this problem, is that it is entirely random! It sometimes last ages in standby before the problems occur, or within 10 minutes.
How can I prove it to HTC??
I wouldn't worry too much about your phone doing the same once in a few months or so
Mine is happening at least 6 times a day!!
I'll try to keep the thread updated to how it all goes
Cheers Ben

Hello,
Could have been the heat, but could simply be a faulty motherboard....either way a new device might be a good thing, 1/2 way through your warranty period.
Don't know how hot it gets in cars in Florida....but I know that it can kill pets let alone phones!
Cheers, not worried about my phone, just trying to relate that's all
You're just going to be have to forcefull in your email and exaggerate...even
best of luck

Though my phone was not left anywhere where temp was extreme, mine is also doing this since this week,, Also a few months old and I blame the apps installed . I ahd battery monitor and suspected just that prog..
I have not yet gone to a clean rom yet but selectively remove apps till I find improvement....
Meaning there are others with the same problem !

Yeh, some of them have the same problem after a couple if weeks old (not exposed to heat or anything) what causes this problem?
How often do u have this problem??
My old Nokia 5230 has the same problem
Mine has the same problem and has never been exposed to extreme heat. I think the power button is faulty and after some use it get stuck some times and closes the phone down. I started pressing the button with less force and the random power downs stopped happening.
What happened? I have not found a relationship yet. It seems random too me so far. If it happens once more i will go to factory default plain htc stock rom (i have not fiddled with the device or rom)
If it then happens as well i know enough. I will see and report me experience in due time.
Btw its android 2.3.3 build 1.47.401.4

To be honest, I think its more of a hardware problem!
My phone was running fine on stock and custom roms for 3 weeks, then it just started last week when I left my phone in the car
A lot if desire hd users had the same issue as us!
I'm awaiting a reply from HTC now
Will update on what they say.
the heat probably was the culprit
my phone reaches around 45c at times due to the high outside temperature here, but i don't have any problems so i guess yours was heated more
but if you can, try changing the battery it may help
Random shutdown
I also suffered from this. A new Radio + ROM + cleaning some apps has solved the problem.
Thanks for the replies everyone!
I received the following e-mail of HTC today:
Dear Oliver Loh,
Thank you for contacting HTC regarding your HTC Device.
I understand that you are currently experiencing difficulties with rebooting and random restarts.
I believe that the reason for this is because of a hardware issue.
In order to rectify this I would like you to perform the following actions:
) Make sure your device is fully up to date:
Menu - settings - about phone - system software update - tick box - check now.
) If possible test the device with or without a (new) battery, SIM, SD card.
To assist you further I have attached links to the HTC Support Site which will enable you to work through the above step by step:
http://www.htc.com/uk/support.aspx
Once the above has been completed you may be required to do a factory reset, for your convenience I have detailed the steps below:
) Restarting or factory resetting your phone:
Restarting your phone (soft reset):
If your phone is running slower than normal, an application is not performing properly, or your phone becomes unresponsive, try restarting your phone and see if that helps solve the problem.
Please remove the battery, wait for a few seconds, reinsert the battery, and then turn the phone on.
Performing a factory reset (hard reset):
Note: Factory reset will not remove the data and files that are in your phone’s microSD card.
Factory reset is not a step to be taken lightly. It will permanently delete all your data and customized settings, and will also remove any applications you've downloaded and installed. Be sure to back up any data and files you want to keep before you do a factory reset.
Performing a factory reset via settings
Performing a factory reset using phone buttons:
If you cannot turn on your phone or access the phone settings, you can still perform a factory reset by using the buttons on the phone.
1. With the phone turned off, press and hold the VOLUME DOWN button, and then briefly press the POWER button.
2. Wait for the screen with the three Android images to appear, and then release the VOLUME DOWN button..
3. Press VOLUME DOWN to select CLEAR STORAGE or (Factory Reset), and then press POWER.
4. Press VOLUME UP to start the factory reset.
Should the above solution not resolve your query please can you confirm the following and reply to me:
1) Has the device been recently updated/upgraded or changed:?
2) Has a new application been recently downloaded:?
3) Please can you turn off all applications and UN-install any which are unessential, As they may be causing issues:?
4) What have you already done/tried to troubleshoot your issue/s:?
5) When did your issue/s occur or re occur:?
6) Is you device or applications fully up to date:?
Should the above fail to restore your device to full working order, the device (MAY) need to be sent for repair.
I hope that this information meets with your requirements, should you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us again.
If this response has resolved your query, and you have no further questions please close this ticket by following the link below. Upon closure of the ticket you will be invited to complete our Customer Satisfaction Survey which should take no more than 1 minute to complete.
To send a reply to this message or let me know I have successfully answered your question log in to our ContactUs site using your email address and your ticket number xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.
Sincerely,
Robert

And today i can confirm the problem has occured 8 times today. Now it can do the problem up to 3 times in a row, when the device is in use.
It happened this morning 3 times, 2 in the afternoon, and as i am typing now, i just booted into recovery and the phone crashed on me twice at the recovery screen.
I will reply to HTC and tell them i have the stock rom etc, and will s-on my device and send it for repair soon hopefully

If the problem persists through multiple ROMs, it definitely sounds like a hardware problem. I'd return it to stock and have it sent in for repair under warranty.
Haven't read all replies... but this is a well-known battery fault (and isn't necessarily triggered by either heat or humidity... it is most commonly a manufacturing defect).
My very first HTC Desire S handset had almost exactly the same issue, only the battery from that handset would power off the phone only when the GSM picked up a signal (I.E.... you get reception, but the phone kills itself instantly. No reception, phone ran fine).
O2 replaced the entire thing under warranty (but I sneakily kept the battery to prove my theory). I placed that battery into my replacement handset, and behold.... EXACTLY the same thing!
Put the new battery in, everything works perfectly.
Bottom line: don't replace the phone, just replace the battery!

Hmm.. it does make a bit more sense that the heat could have affected the battery rather than the phone itself.
The battery is probably unable to run under low power that is used when put in sleep mode so it just cuts itself out altogether.
My hypothesis...
i have the exact problem!!
i thought i was the only one... mine turns off at least 3-4 times a day for no apparent reason.
at first, i thought it was the heat during the summer.. but now that the temperature is getting milder i dont really think thats the cause.
sometimes when i place it on the desk and i tap it or just bump it hard enough it'll turn off.
i think its more of a hardware problem then software.

That's sounds like a bad battery connection, I'd take it back under warranty {if possible} as the chance of a fried eMMC chip must be high!
Hi
just want to ask if anybody have encountered my problem with htc sensation.
my phone reboots and/or shuts off intermittently.
i had it fixed on the service center but still the problem persist.
i ask what action did they do, according to them they just re-flash it.
after a week the problem re-surfaces, would like to ask about your opinion on how to fix it. thanks in advance
best regards,

are you running custom roms?
Got the same problem and i know one other Person who does. Problem stopped appearing for some time and now its back worse than ever with random shutdowns even during calls. Running Stock HTC ROM not rooted or anything. Found some clues on the internet that it might be caused by a SW Update that came from HTC. Nothing for sure though. All i know is that i am seriously looking for another device at the moment. HTC and Android devices are annoying me more and more lately. No Official Updates (or they take 6 months), Compatibility Issues... The list grows longer every day. I used to love Android Phones, especially the HTC Ones but they appear to be stuck.

you have just been unlucky...i'm running custom roms and sometimes i get random reboot but now it is all ok!
send it back!
I had exactly this problem, phone kept turning off at random. Mine was totally stock, first time I sent it back they re-flashed but it started turning off again after about 2 weeks. I sent it back again, they changed the motherboard and its been working fine since then (touch wood!).
Also had random shutdowns. Got a new battery and the problem was gone. But now 4 months in on the new battery same thing starts to happen again. Beginning to thinks there's something wrong with the power management.
Sent from my HTC Sensation XE with Beats Audio using XDA
there is actually an issue on the power management, which is fixed with the ics update. If you can wait , you'll get an update from htc
if you cant, go ahead and flash a custom ics rom
I had the same problem before I bought a new battery and i hope it wont come back when the battery gets older. The problem was with 2G networks. If you turn the mobile network to WCDMA (3/4G) only in the settings, the phone shouldn't shut down. I hope the ICS update completely solves this
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA
I had the same problem as well. I flashed ICS and it would still shut off. I noticed it wouldn't ever shut off if it was just sitting on my desk except one time it shut off when on my desk and someone called and my phone vibrated. Turns out the battery connection wasn't tight enough and when moved around, it would lose power. I folded a small piece of paper to make the battery fit tighter and it hasn't shut off since (about a month)
Hi all, I have gone through this problem... I have done all troubleshootings S-off S-On different roms new sim car everything even flashed by service station not helped...on solution for random shut down for me was changing motherboard and after they changed my motherboard I haven't faced single issue... get board changed.
Issues
1) random shutdown
2)while calling some shuts down
3)If it shuts down it will again shut down imd. on 2-3 attempts then start properly.
4) when screen is off and u push power button u find phone down
5) Random shut down some time imd or it will not happen for for next 8-9 hrs.
Get mother board changed.
I was experecing the same issue.
Random reboots or random shut down !
Never when my phone is charging, only when it is on battery.
But I'm trying something, the auto brigthness ! I desactivate auto brigthness, for the moment no ramdon reboots or shut down anymore, was testing 2 days now ! Perhaps try this solution !

3 users in my office are seeing this
3 sensation users in my office are seeing this too, the UE "powers up" when you attempt to wake the screen i'm taking logcat but i'm yet to determine if the phone is powering off at some time when the screen is off or when you attempt to wake it.
i am seeing the battery stats are all over the place after it boots up.
this does not happen when it is being charged.
the logcat from my phone sometimes say a process has crashed (latest 03-06 17:06:18.995 I/ActivityManager( 321): Process com.htc.ereader.drmengine (pid 2742) has died.) but not in the majority of my logs they just appear to stop,
if anyone is proficient at logcat analysis i can share a log taken of a failure.
the 3 users in my office have:
1X S off and ICS ARHD
1X S off and ICS (trips)
1X S off GB unbranded
any help would be gratefully received
**EDIT**
having just pressed the power button to wake the screen(19:00) the phone booted again i was able to check the logcat log file and it stopped logging at 18:02 so it appears to be crashing when going into sleep or when in sleep mode rather than when the wake command is issued
also: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1500966 looks like the same issue.
Same problem on HTC Sensation with ICS
Hi,
Sorry to crush your hopes for ICS solving the problem but I'm running Android Revolution 6.5.0, a custom ICS ROM, on my Sensation and I'm having the same problem. Never had it with the stock ROM, though.
Also, it's never happened when plugged-in or when the battery is full. Seems to me that it shuts down more frequently when the battery level gets lower.
Anyone experience it the same way?
Anyone solved the problem by replacing the battery?
Cheers,
Stefan
Hi
any news about this?. Is this problem caused by a hardware failure finally?
Thank you!.

Well I got my battery replaced. Worked fine for about 3 months. Now the issue is back. I think it has something to do with the power management on the phone wearing down the battery. When I plug in my charger I feel electricity in the back cover and a humming sound in my headphones. Somethings wrong with the hardware. Going to send my phone in now

I get a weird humming feeling too, like a vibration as you run your finger over the back. Whats also weird is that if im holding the phone and then someone runs their finger on my hand, they also feel the static/vibration feeling. However as soon as I put the phone down the vibration feeling goes. Its so weird, if I send the phone off I'll be phoneless for weeks!
Very simple solution
Hi guys,
Most of us (myself included) are sometimes blinded by our knowledge of custom roms to not try the most obvious fix for this finally very simple issue...
I have a park of about 20 HTC sensation on my company and had the problem on several of them (mine is running a CM9 nightly , but all the others are stock). Had the motherboard/battery replaced on some of them, tried many settings (and on my phone, different roms) but it only offered a temporary and random improvement. I found the solution on a forum and I'm ashamed I never found it earlyer as it's so simple:
Remove your back cover and place a spacer (the thickness of one or two visit cards) between the top side (right part, just opposite to the connector) border of the battery and the chassis. This will ensure that the battery presses a bit harder on the connector. Without the spacer, you may notice that the battery is in a slightly skewed position, not totally parallel with the compartiment and therefore not pressing hard enough on the connector. We never had an unexpected shutdown since then !!!
Hi,
My Sensation (the 1.2ghz model, stock battery) has started rebooting after heavy use. I'm not sure if the phone did this when it was completely stock as I didn't use it very much before flashing.
I flashed to stock ICS first. After playing Temple Run for a solid 2-3 hours the phone gets very hot, then it randomly reboots. (and my damn stats were gone). I let the phone cool and played more yesterday, again after 2-3 hours it rebooted again.. I wondered if it was the ROM so I super wiped and installed Android HD Revolution 6.5 - exactly the same problem.
I tried plugging my phone in to my PC and looking at the logcat but it wasn't rebooting when I did get it in. It was setting CPU time or something fairly frequently - is this normal?
Has anyone else had this issue? My PC used to do this all the time when it was overheating so I think the same problem is occurring here.
Is it my phone? I bought the phone from a friend and it would be a pain in the ass to get it sent off on his insurance (especially with this problem, they might turn it on, find no issue and fire it back)
EDIT: Just to confirm - it's not only when Temple Run is on. After it rebooted the first time, I scrolled through the apps whilst it was still fairly hot and it rebooted again so its not specifically Temple Run which is making it reboot.
You can try flash sebastiankernel and see if there are any overclock, underclock, overvolt or undervolt problems. But most likely you have a defect model, send it back and describe to problem to them so they will know how to fix it.
if cellphone temp goes over 50 it automatically turn off , there is no defect in ur phone but this happens get cpu master add powr eidget on screen n keep a look out n u b fine
hit thnx if i helped

Thanks for the replies. I've actually been using a temperature widget. The hottest I've seen it record is 43c. Also, after it turned off it was this temp aswell so I don't think its quite getting to 50c.
So no one else has this problem after heavily playing 3D games? (or at all?)
Is there anything else I can try to fix this?

Hi Zeus,
Firstly - Never, ever pull the battery!!!
There - over and done with. Pulling the battery runs a high risk of causing permanent damage to the eMMC chip. You should (I have never locked up my phone so badly that this doesn't work) hold down the Power, Vol+ and Vol- buttons until the phone shuts down on its own.
You say your phone is no-rooted? I guess that means that you have not run any kind of mod on it, obtained S-OFF or anything else and the phone is, basically, as you bought it? If so then I would recommend that you simply go via HTC or your service provider to obtain a replacement.
If you have not felt the need before now to unock/root your phone then now is not really the ideal time to start doing so if you have a warranty still.

If you are in Mumbai (as on ur profile) , You can visit the HTC Support Centre @ Borivali (Thakkar Mall, near Borivali Station) - http://www.htc.com/in/help/service-center/
Please Note : They will most probably repair the phone (I don't think they replace the phones here in India after the initial 15 days period in which u can claim the Dead on Arrival policy).
Thanks for all the Suggestions,
Have read all the issues regarding emmc chip being fried on Desire S, but being out of town for some day, didnt had any choice but to try, however i let the battery drain completely yest.. recharged the phone to full and then booted again.. and its working fine as of now (didnt worked earlier).. without any issues from last 5 hrs.. lets see how it holds, havent yet installed any of apps yet.. guess will wait for another day or two to see the software fails again to hold.
went borivali, but its not yet started (confirmed with customer care of HTC) still being completed..
but yes.. will visit the Dadar branch if any issue arrises afterwards
Glad to hear its working fine as of now.
Btw , regarding the Borivali Service Centre . . I have been there last month & it is well up & running !
Been there on Friday evening at around 6 but it was closed....then I inquired on customer care which told me its non functional as of now... Will check tomm....
The phones working f9 now...no issues in past 2 days...hope it holds

Guys, I have seen this kind of problem with one of my colleagues phone (Not Desire S but Wildfire S). The reason was (assumed) pretty weird though, it was because of some electrical problem. Whenever he would charge his phone at home - it would start having this kind of problem, but when he charged it at office or through his PC - the problem would vanish!
Although I am not sure if yours is the same case.... but then could be..
Another thing: I got my phone's mobo replace free of cost from HTC (Salora) when it was under warranty even though it was S-Off, Rooted - so I think HTC is a bit lenient in India
The issue it seems has vanished, no issues as of now..no hangups or freezes and yes....both the time the issue arised when the phone was in charging.

Hi, I have been looking all over the internet and search the xda thread but I couldn't find anything related to my problem.
So this morning when I wake up, I turned on my phone and after I used it for awhile suddenly my phone stopped working (freeze/hang) and started to reboot itself. After it reboots my phone's screen as per attached below.
The problem lasted for a day and started to driving me nuts!
Anyone experienced same problem?
I am running KK4.4.2 fyki.
Thank you very much for your kind help!
are you unlocked, rooted, custom recovery, rom, kernel, anything? can you access the bootloader?

Nope, I am all stock without any modification nor and fancy stuffs.
Just pure android 4.4.2
I am thinking that the hardware might be faulty..

If you're stock, it could be hardware. Though have you ever attempted to root?
Is it just randomly happening?
Definitely hardware

Yes, it just randomly happening. It started yesterday morning until now..
The phone started to not responding at all and then my screen goes broken (same screen as broken TV I might say).
If I let it cool for 15-20 minutes the phone is usable, but then after 1 hour of normal usage the phone started to freeze again.
Just curious, none of you experienced the same?
this kinda looks like the static i was getting on screen on my n7 2012 when i let the battery get too low. charging it up and a few reboots fixed it. but im not sure if that's what is going on with yours

I just got mine, 32gb from the playstore, a few days ago, and nothing like that.
If it's happening when your device is hot | overheating, you may wana see if you get it replaced.
It happened to me once. The phone was with his screen off and when I try to turn it on that exact same screen came. But it just happened once, also I experienced random poweroffs and reboots. I did a factory reset and power off issues and freeze stops, but had one reboot once I start installing my apps. I think its a software issue but I'm not sure.

I'm glad (and kinda of sad) to know that I'm not the only one with this issue.
The problem started about two weeks after I bought mine(Telus). It's done this about 5 or 6 times, randomly.
I found that having someone call me will "unfreeze" the device and the screen gets back to normal.
The first couple times it happened, I was running stock 4.4.2. I since rooted it and installed Xpposed/GravityBox and I'm still getting the problem...
I think that I'll have to return it...
Idk if i need RMA the phone. Its a great phone and the reboot issues has stopped. What should i do?

Hi, I have the exact same problem, I posted a video on youtube /watch?v=m0EkC_ak01g but I got to the same conclusion that it might be a GPU issue. So there is nothing I can do right?, the worst thing is Im in Argentina and LG dont take my warranty because I bought it in Germany. So there is absolutely nothing I can do?, I know how to avoid the flickering a little bit, when I hit "Ok Google" button it seems responsive and as long as I touch the screen it works (you can see it in the video) but as soon as I stop touching it, after 2-3 seconds it becomes unresponsive again, and when I say unresponsive Im saying the screen doesnt reflect what Im doing, I can still push the buttons and all. So Im not 100% sure its a GPU issue, but a software too. Thanks.
