SIM Cardless Optimization

I'm an early adopter of the N1. My G1 will now only have wifi connectivity and I am wondering if there are any roms that are optimized for non-phone use. I think the desire for that kind of optimization will only grow as people start replacing their first loves. I might be completely off-base, I have been up for a couple days. I'm not even sure what I want when I say optimization. But I didn't know what I wanted from custom roms when I got my first G1 and now I can't wait until Cyanogen drops his first full rom for the N1.

I see where you are comming from.. as I LOVE my G1 and at the same time lusting for the N1. I would like to have another use for the G1, something like a media center remote.. or anything.
I think this is a good idea and look forward to some of the dev responses.

You dont need a special rom for it without service. If you dont have service then phone and the like just wont work. Uninstall what you dont want. But there arent going to be any devs making roms just for g1 without service, it is a complete waste of time. There wouldnt be anything different, minus no phone.

i dont really see the point of that tbh - you can change the call button to open something else for example

lol.. OMG dude your sig is so right. I used to love helping people with anythign electronicall or software related... Since I joined here I realized, noone wants help... they want someone to hold their hand and do it for them. Bunch of ungreatfull spoiled brats.

If the device no longer needs to maintain the functionality of a phone, the door is even wider open. It could, for example, be a rom with debian cooked in, or it could be something like no6969el described.

you are asking a question, not contributing to the good of the android community
they answer is simple - yes...but pointless
i am far from close minded - i am always up for expanding the capabilities of my phone....not detracting from them like this idea
you can use the phone as a media centre remote with the aid of a simple app on the market
you can disable mobile data and use only wifi
you can reprogram the call button to do whatever you want
you can install debian/ubuntu rather easily and use it with vncviewer
all these things can already be done using stock android - nevermind having to modify it

Nothing I have said or asked has detracted from android. Asking questions has its place in development, it causes thinking. Re-purposing old gen hardware happens, sometimes with fantastic results. First generation android devices, like the G1, have many possibilities other than telephony.

I am wondering if there are any roms that are optimized for non-phone use.

a new keyboard

i was looking though the touch wiz sys dump and i liked the keyboard so i put it in an update format. Just flash it, i gurantee youll like it. If not just remove it. I included the lwp as well that were posted earlier the lwp from it too, they work great on the phone though, I need someone to test it for me, cus swype is a pain to remove w/o wiping, and i already have all this on my phone. you just need to flash it like a rom. It contains 4lwp and 1keyboard app and their libs...dl the new lwp and kb HERE ​

Any chance of just getting the KB?

no time, sorry. you can rip them out and just install though, just make sure you take the lib files that go with them in your libs folder and the apps in your sys/app or data/app folder.

thanks for testing it and the quick feedback. i stated that it included the lwps in the op. they are from the new touch wiz dump. Ill check to see whats up with swype, just figured id throw it out there for those that didnt see this stuff yet....also, did you remove your old swype completely? or did you not have it? cus its VERY hard to get rid of.....just wondering so i can fix if something wrong.

sorry about that, and thanks.ok, soon as i get home ill post a link to a really sweet htc skinned swype mod. i use the red one in my newest rom, but the green one is slick too. im going to hang out for a little bit, when i get back ill put it up, and just take it out of the other one and ill mess with it, since its a full version.....

You saw something you liked, but didn't test it because its too much work to uninstall what you already have but that's ok because you already have it installed so you need someone else to take a blind leap of faith and install something you "gurantee" they'll like but if they don't that's ok too because they can just uninstall it (which really they can't do easily) but if you want to see what it is in the first place tough luck because you're out and about and have no time to post a screenshot for your own quasi-release?

I strongly recommend that if you want to be taken seriously, you put a little more thought into your release posts. I applaud you for taking the time to share with the community, but frivolous posting of root-level patches without some form of quality control on your part could lead to a dangerous precedent of buggy and/or malicious code being introduced in the same channels.
I know you probably have the communities best interest at heart, but holding yourself to a higher standard keeps the bar high for the rest of those issuing releases to demonstrate an aptitude for solid documentation so people know precisely what to expect from dedicated contributors.

Do you really think i need YOU or ANYONE else to take ME seriously? my work speaks for itself, i could care less what you think of me, but just dont be disrespectful or snotty about it when you obviously have no clue as to what i do, if you say " which really they can't do easily" when you are speaking about removing a single app.I take it youve never been to dev? cus thats what ive been doing for the past 3 days, is working on my last rom. Then when i finish something that takes more than a day i take a break. I am not a developer nor have i ever claimed to be one.i have many contributions to the site,and taken a **** ton of time making sure my theads for them are maintained and everything i work on i support. Not a blind leap of faith, i have many pps that ASK to test for me because i dont have time to when im working. I have a 8mo old and fiance to take care of as well, this cannot be my ENTIRE life(though i might enjoy that)ive been asked permission to port 4 of my roms to other devices, and about 100 pps i talk to on a regular basis,you can talk to that will tell you another story about what I can DO. ? is what can YOU do? and WHY would you be ragging on someone who makes regular contributions to the site to help members enjoy their newest hardware just a little bit more? you want to see more go to hero-cdma and tell me some more about quality control. Thanks for this magnusragnarok! Any chance you could try to get an update zip with the t9 ime in the i9000 dump? I'm curious to see how the Sammy virtual keyboard looks. Also, that guy apparently doesn't realize how big of an asset you've been to the hero and evo communities. Keep up the great work!

lemme check that out. i completely overlooked it. pretty sure i can. i can use all the practice i can get, i just have to rm it from the dump and find the libs that go with it, should be just like ours though. SERIOUSLY, why whould you make it 2wice as bad by requoting the entire post in ITALICS? GOOD JOB. PLEASE try to remain on topic, this is a thread about a kb and the touch wiz lwp i put together in one update for everyones convenience, not about my choice of font and color. If we were not allowed the choice we would not have it available to us.

If you took a moment to actually absorb what I posted, you would recognize I did not besmirch your contributions, but was offering a point of constructive criticism.
Regardless of the quality or lack thereof of your "releases", your posts are plagued with you getting into flame wars with people because you feel like you have to defend yourself against any form of critique you don't agree with.
But hey, if you have five people who think your work is on par with some of those that I have donated to, by all means cater to that denominator. I'll gladly keep my feedback to myself and save it for someone who can handle dialogue with a little more class.

Well i have different questions that should be in different parts of the forums, I dont understand while people insist on submitting that on the forum. If you wish not to help just move along.

I am helping you. I told you to use the search, which is going to help you a lot more than you think. Even browsing through these threads, I'm sure you see that a lot of these processes can be a bit extensive. And, especially when you ask vague questions like in the original post, no one can help because you're not saying anything specifically (WHICH launcher are you looking to change to? etc. etc.)
Get it? Gonna' use that search? Hope so.

I normally don't like this kind of answer but in this case i would have to agree with TJ, start from the beginning first, have the device rooted and flash your custom ROM then everything will come easier

These guys are just morons. In the time you guys wrote all that crap, you could have just answered his question or atleast guide him.
Even thought you can somewhat modify the appearance, and customize it to your linking, you will need to root your phone in order to modify certain elements.
For beginner I suggest you download a few apps that will allow you to do some minor tweeking. Here's a list of a few apps to start you off.
Launcher pro
Beautiful widgets
Pure calendar
Flickie
Switch pro

So we're morons because we didn't post a broad answer with suggestions of five different things like you? I think you should wisen up before you start slinging around insults that describe yourself more than anyone else.
There's an old saying that goes, "If you give a man a fish, you feed him for the night, but if you teach him to fish, you feed him for a lifetime."
THAT'S the mentality that goes into showing people the usefulness of the search tool. Unless it's something profound or newly developed by that particular person, odds are it's been discussed and can be found with the search tool.
You above just gave him tips to different kinds of launchers, and suggested things like rooting his phone, but didn't post any kinds of links to tutorials or downloads for the apps themselves... are you expecting him to SEARCH for these things himself or what?... exactly.

I didn't give him a smart answer, and I not only respected him, but gave reasoning as to why I gave the answer that I did... in fact, the only person to be dissrespectful and give an answer that doesn't truly help is... well... you. LMFAO. IN fact, I think I called you out pretty in depth, and your response was a childish sentence with a "name" inserted. Get real. I will apologize for all of my noobiness in advance. I'm new to rooting and all of this stuff. I am coming from jailbreaking and what not with my iPod Touch. They are quite different so I am finding out. I just have some or a lot of questions. If you would be so kind to answer.
I am confused on which order to do things in. Do you root then install CWM then kernel and ROM?
What is the kernel exactly and is it needed?
When you use a ROM it comes with a theme already. I read another post that you should really load a system wide them over it. Can you manually change everything theme wise on that ROM that you are running?
I've noticed that there are different types of themes being HDPI or MIUI. How do you know which ones you can use? I'm not sure if they are phone specific.
I know I have more questions I just can't remember them all. lol I get my phone tomorrow and just really trying to grasp all this.

Thanks for that. After further looking throughout today I have come upon most of what I needed answered.
One question I can't seem to find the answer to exactly is how to change the status bar and those icons.

A problem as come up though because of how crappy Verizon is. The price of the Charge is 299.99. After being with them and having a contract before their new upgrade policy I should still get a good discounted price on top of the 299.99. Well I only get $10 off which is more then my parents are will to spend unless I put some more towards it too. Been looking for a job for forever and still looking. Might have one soon.
Should I wait it out and still get it when I can or go with something my parents are willing to buy being like their Droid X or around that price?

I don't want to offend anyone, but I'm curious about something. I noticed a couple of years ago (at least, maybe more) that some forum posts had the following added to the signature line

And I thought, OK, so you have an iPhone. I don't really care, but oh well. And I wondered if it was something that Apple added as a way to advertise (wouldn't surprise me) or if it was something that some iPhone users liked as way of saying "I have an iPhone" (that kind of ego type statement wouldn't have surprised me coming from some iPhone users). Next I thought that maybe they just didn't know how to turn it off (again, that wouldn't have surprised me either).
Then I noticed a lot of Android users are doing this too in recent years, so I wasn't really sure what was up. As a group, we don't tend to be the advertising type. Personally I find it kind of annoying as I'm reading a series of forum posts only to get the my phone is blah blah blah and I use blah blah blah. My first reaction is... Who cares? I can look up what you use if I really want to or ask. I was reading something I was interested in and now it is like a forced break for commercials. Maybe I'm just old, or maybe my attention span isn't the greatest, but it gets in the way of my reading forum posts enough to be mildly annoying.
What do others think about it? Anyone understand why people add this stuff? Is it that they want to trumpet they use such and such device? Are the forced to use it because of the phone or software they're using? If so, that's a phone/software company I want to avoid. Or do they just not know how to turn it off? Other reasons?

Most of the time its actually for good reason... say you have a problem with your phone and post about it, having all of that information there is a big help for people trying to help out... if you don't have all the info (phone, rom, kernel, mods) it makes it harder to help out and clutters threads because the "helpers" have to ask what rom/kernel/mods they are using... if its in their sig already, much easier to debug and figure out what's going wrong or if its just a bug with a certain rom/kernel/mod... make sense?
