Updated findings: Bad audio out thru headphone jack to car fm transmitter - Nexus One Accessories

First off I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this and I also searched for the past few days and have had no luck finding anything much on this. Most stuff I come accross is talking about the phone having a built in fm transmitter that doesn't work - blah blah blah. So here goes, I'm now on Paul's Froyo ROM and for the first time decided to try using the phone for playing music in my car thru a wired fm transmitter and it was not good. I now have three fm transmitters (2 I bought and the final one my brother gave me his that he used to use in his car with no problems) all give me the same results which is it seems okay playing through parts of songs that don't have much bass but once bass starts to hit it gets all awful stattic sounding and the Stereo (ST) indicator on my radio blinks so somehow the sound quality goes all bad. I've narrowed it down to obviously being something with the phone somehow cause I've tried with iPhones and another MP3 player and they (FM transmitters) work perfectly. I've also tried it with IntersectRaven's and CM's kernels for Froyo to see if the kernels might make a difference and no luck. So my question is, is this a known issue with the N1 or is this an issue with Froyo and isn't the case with say CM 5.0.7.1, anyone with experience can shed some light? Was thinking to go back to CM but after seeing all the threads of the issues in doing so decided not to but if this is not the case with other ROMs then it would make me switch back until a official Cyanogenized Froyo is out. If this is the wrong forum then my apologies and Dev's plz move to correct forum.
Update: I've messed with it some more and have been able to get it to play fine with Pershoots kernel but I have to turn down the media volume to approximately 70%. So it seems to me that with the media volume up all the way it must be drawing too much power or something from the headphone jack to make the output all distorted. I haven't tried with IntersectRaven's kernel to say if I get the same result since I'm just happy the darn thing works now. I'll also do a post in the Develoment forum linking to this in case anyone there may want to investigate this issue.

Sounds to me like every experience I've ever had with every FM transmitter. They just don't transmit loudness or bass well. I don't think it's the phone, I think its the FM Transmitter technology.
edit: could just be the volume boost or something on the specific kernel (not even sure if the kernel's you are talking about have a volume boost) but that may increase the max volume out and cause the problem.

yes exactly, try a vanilla kernel and see how that plays out... I am curious of your findings...

what you are describing is quiet normal if you drive the input of the fm transmitter too hard. You even found out the solution; lower the volume.

Yeh, but the thing that was baffling me was that the iPhones I tried worked fine with volume blasted and so did a MP3 player and that was with 3 different FM transmitters. I originally thought it was the transmitter so that's why I ended up buying another one to try then asking my brother for his which I know he used to have running with no issues. But after thinking about it for a while and searching some more I found posts in the kernel threads about audio boost so that's what made me think to turn the volume on the phone down.
Would like to try a vanilla kernel if you can link me to where to find one that's compatible with Froyo.
And actually I think I'm using CM's Froyo kernel but from what I understand it has pretty much the same tweaks as Pershoot's. Also need to go back to IntersectRaven's and try again with the vol down a bit but I don't have enough battery life left to feel comfortable flashing it.

For the FM-transmitter that I use in my car it's actually stated in the manual that you should keep the volume at about 50% on the device as to not ruin the sound. So I guess this is quite normal and just means you have to adjust the volume on the car stereo a bit.

All kernels are compatible with froyo, just go to the kernels thread and find a sock one

Can anyone boost the FM radio volume through the earphones?

Please, my eyes bleed from reading in the forum, but as far as I can tell noone has succeeded...
I am looking for a tweak or cab or ROM or anything that can boost the audio output of the FM radio through the earphones!
I have tried everything and nothing works.
It is important to me because I ride motercycles and I want to be able to listen to the radio.

But none of these work.
Audiopara increases all the sounds except the radio through the earphones. I have tried it.
If you could use your skills in helping people rather than making fun of them you would be much appreciated.
currently no one has been able to increase the vol on the FM radio i think that it is more of a hardware limitation than software, i could be wrong and yes all volume boast cab, and audiopara files does not work on FM Radio, i guess we got to to wait and see
I guess a setting in audioparam3.cvs can change volume for FM raido.
Some version of Energy ROM has very low FM volume and very loud mp3 volume but it has been improved a lot.

So flywhc are you saying that if I change ROM, since I am currently using ENERGY, the radio might be louder?
Because the stock ROM was equally low volumed as ENERGY ROM
I believe it is related to some settings in the ROM so some ROM has louder volume some has lower.
I guess settings are written in audioparam3.cvs

You should consider one of the Bluetooth helmet headsets, like the Parrot SK4000, or the Cardo Scala Rider with Radio.

Thank you, but its a rather expensive solution, although much safer...
Besides I use 3 different helmets, according to what I am driving and the outside tempereture and weather, so it would be a lot of trouble to adjust the bluetooth to another helmet every time!
I tried itech clip radio bluetooth that was cheaper but it was impractical and had a very poor sound quality.
After all apart from me many would benefit if someone could come up with a solution.
search this forum and play with that audioparam3.csv you may get a solution.
alternatively you can change a better 3.5mm earphone. I am using SonyEricsson w series phone earphone. It has much better quality and loud. It may be dangerous for driving because it blocks noise!

[Q] Bluetooth Audio Quality Issues Fix?

I've just got droid charge last week and I like everything about it (only after rooting and installing Gummycharged), but there is one huge problem for me. Well, it might be 2, but one of them is slightly better with Gummycharged and voodoo lagfix.
Here's the issue - I love listening to music in my car through bluetooth and until recently I've been using my Ipod touch 4g and it has been working flawlessly and music quality was great. Now, once I got the Droid Charge, I've noticed 2 things - every minute or 2 the songs would skip (interrupt), and the sound quality was pretty terrible (mainly with the high end - sounded like tweeters were being overloaded).
Rooting the phone helped with skipping - it now happens once in 10 minutes or so, so that's acceptable, however the sound quality is still pretty horrible. I've looked around on these forums and people had similar issues with quality with their stock phones and most people suggest CyanogenMod. I'm not all that familiar with what different ROMs are available for Charge, but as far as I can tell this one isn't. Does anyone know if there is way to fix/configure the quality of bluetooth transmission on this phone? Is there any mod I can install? Anyone having similar issues?
Any help is much appreciated!

Thanks, but the problem is more fundamental, I suppose. Looks like HTC and Samsung use some custom bluetooth code in their ROMs. Apparently it limits the bitpool value at 32, which makes the audio quality terrible over bluetooth. Surprisingly, everyone knows what the problem is but so far the only reported solution is the cyanogenmod.

I'm running GummyCharged 1.85 w/ the voodoo kernel (pbj) and also getting skips over bluetooth to my car stereo. It's seriously distracting and annoying. My Droid 2 worked flawlessly in this respect, but it seems like any time the Charge does any "thinking" it makes the BT audio skip.
Any hope of a fix for this?
My Charge is stock and I haven't had a chance to try the bluetooth audio streaming yet, but when I plug my phone into my car to listen to music through the aux jack it does the same thing, about once every song it skips. Seems odd. I'll try bluetooth today on my way to school and see what happens. You'd think with Bluetooth 3.0 on board the signal would be strong enough to stream decent quality music...
I can confirm this issue is there and in your face a lot. I tried it on the way to school (about a 40 minute ride), it skipped once or twice every few minutes, no big deal. The quality was acceptable for wireless transfer, nothing to write home about. Not a lot of low end, and just a hint of static and slightly over-boosted highs. However I tried it again on the way home once I realized I had forgotten my aux cable, and it skipped so often I just switched to FM. It was so annoying. I can confirm your suspicions that it seems to happen when the phone is trying to do something. Switching towers, background apps, turning on data and checking traffic with Google Maps really freaked it out, but it was fine once I was done. Kinda sucks for those who wish to use the feature regularly.

I have a droid charge, and the bluetooth streaming quality really sucks, like the OP pointed out, highs are really bad.
Tried with my friends iphone and it worked flawlessly.
CyanogenMod is still unavailable for the droid charge as far as I can tell.
Is there any other fix that anyone has found that will fix the bluetooth sound quality when streaming music?
Any help or places to look is appreciated.

Persistant Volume Issue in Gingerbread

So basically the first sound you hear after a short or long idle time will always be quieter than your actual setting and then keep using the device and everything sounds normal. I almost overslept and missed calls several times cause my alarm and ringtones are so quiet now.
Anyone have any ideas what could be done or taken a look at here?
EDIT: FYI, someone else claimed they had it since MR1 update but I had no issues on Froyo whatsoever. This only became introduced to me with the first 2.07 leak.

It is easy to see this with gingeritis all you have to do is turn the volume up to max for your ringer, and then turn the screen off and let it sit for a minute or two. Then turn the screen back on and push the volume up key, you will notice the first sound it makes is really soft, and if you push it again, it makes the normal loud sound.
I hope someone sheds light on this...I for one would like to stop missing calls

aosp roms are louder but not loud enough. we for sure need a volume boost. i cannot imagine it would be that hard to do.
I was just getting ready to start a thread about a possible volume booster.. I can't remember if it was the tb or fascinate i had it on but, adrynalyne had a program called drm i think in his roms that enhanced the volume.. the problem I'm having is the media volume.. I'm trying to listen to MLB at bat here at work but can barely hear the broadcast.

Hmm volume booster does seem to be a good workaround idea but I think the main issue is the fact that the volume level automatically changes regardless of the volume loudness. If only someone might be able to figure out what this can be caused by.....
Also I noticed something interesting today. On some sounds it actually seems like it starts off quiet and then makes it louder while the sound is playing. It's hard to tell cause it's so fast but it's definitely noticeable in some cases.
On cm7 there is an option to play notifications and ringtone through the speaker (even though I thought they did anyway) but I haven't noticed the problem with that selected.

someone should look into the lg vortex volume and try to port the mod over. my wifes phone is 10x louder than my tbolt. hers is aosp too.
FYI, I have only tested this on the official leaks. No custom ROMs or AOSP yet. Though I'm quite tempted to find out if this occurs on other ROMs as well (especially AOSP).

It takes a split second for the audio amplifier to fire up. The kernel is probably not accounting for this. The audio amplifier suspends after usage just like the screen does to prevent battery drain.

Hmm that's an interesting theory but just FYI, the screen times out later than the volume begins to idle to quiet (if it matters). You think flashing another kernel might fix the issue?

Sorry. I didn't mean they time out at the same time. Just meant that it also suspends to save battery. I have a feeling this won't be solved until the gingerbread sense kernel source is released. A really good kernel dev might be able to look into this with their current source. You might also notice a pop or crackle sound due to this same issue. Again it is coming from the amplifier powering up WHILE the audio is playing instead of BEFORE. There could be an underlying latency in the hardware but I doubt that's true since it wasn't really noticeable on Froyo. Android has always had a problem with audio latency although it has been pretty much "worked around".

Hmm I see. FYI, I also noticed this issue is extremely obvious when opening the phone dialer for the first time and just press like the number 1. You can hear for a split second as if it "boots up" the audio amplifier the dialing sound for the button grows from silent to normal volume. Then as you dial the rest it sounds fine. But cancel out of the phone dialer and back into literally after like as short as 5 seconds press a number on the dialpad again, you hear it making dialing sound quiet to louder and then normal for the rest of the dialing.
Such a bizarre issue, I really don't understand why this problem just occurred in Gingerbread builds if it's been absolutely fine on older Froyo builds. You would think something as obvious as this would be one of the first bugs they try to resolve. And it seems like it wouldn't be that hard also (assuming it's just a setting in the kernel coding or something).
FYI, if it helps anyone willing to look into it I found out the audio amplifier for the Thunderbolt is a TI TPA2051.
I am really hoping some of our higher up guys can take a look at this. I am really curious to know what (if anything) can fix this issue.
i do know the overall volume on sense roms are much quieter than aosp. what a waste of a good speaker. we for sure need a fix here.
It might not be as easy as it sounds. Audio can be handled quite differently from OEM to OEM. I'm not sure if the thunderbolt is using the native Android audio or if HTC is using their own implementation. You also have to throw the audio Codec into the mix. Here is a link that although it doesn't explain our specific problem, you can see the complexity and the inherent issues with Android audio http://groups.google.com/group/android-ndk/browse_thread/thread/1744088af0924ed9/7170773c13aabe2f i'm not sure about now but the general consensus with audio developers used to be that google needed to stop trying to implement fancy bells and whistles in the audio and get a good solid foundation to start with. Gingerbread was supposed to address some of these issues but I don't believe it did.
Anyway, i'm not positive but you may notice the problem more in gingerbread because there were quite a few changes in the native audio implementation.

Gingerbread Kernel Source for Thunderbolt just released: Link
I know this thread is old, but something i've noticed in regards to this. Im running a semi-stock ROM (xda-bolt), with a stock kernel. I noticed the volume changes don't happen on this ROM, however with a modified kernel such as IMOs 6, the problem arises. Any other non-stock kernel i've used has this problem, but stock kernels do not.

Hi all,
I have successfully rooted and flashed Paranoid Android 2.54 onto my ATT HOX and it is a wonderful ROM for sure. I love the options that it provides and the silky smooth, almost stock interface. The only real issue that I have come across is when I try to use a headset for calls. I am defining a headset as a 3.5mm plug in set of earbuds with mic (Klipsch S4i to be exact). When I listen to music, be it on Pandora, Google Music or Apollo all is well. As soon as I try to use the phone, no sound comes through the earbuds and the mic does not function. In fact you can see a noticable slow down in the dialer app when the headset it even plugged in. If I make a call, then plug in the headset, everything goes silent and the other side can't hear me until I unplug the headset from the phone.
Here is the real kicker though! I have my car stereo modded with an aux 3.5mm plug for listening to music and if I plug the phone into that it works just fine in phone mode! Now, I do realize that the Klipsch is setup as a TRRS and the car aux is just TRS (so when using the car stereo I am effectively bypassing the mic portion of the 3.5mm plug and using the phone's mic), but I cannot for the life of me understand why the headset will not work.
I am hoping that someone can enlighten me or least tell me that they to are experiencing this same issue. I will gladly provide any more info that someone might need to help diagnose the issue, and thanks in advance!
Update so far...
So, up to this point here is what I've found. If I plug in a normal set of earphone (read buds only no mic inline) then I will get sound through them no matter what I am doing (youtube, music or phone). Also, in this configuration anyone I am talking to on the phone can hear me just fine as I am using the phone's mic. However, when I plug in an earbud/mic combo the phone will not function. I get silence and the other side cannot hear me speaking either. It's as if the software has somehow told the headphone jack to act differently than it used to with earbud/mic combos. I am stumped as to why the OS would not allow this type of use when it is so standard. Anyone have any thoughts?
I actually have the same headset and I started having problems with it on the stock rom before I even rooted and flashed a custom one. I honestly just thought it was because they're really made for apple phones. Sometimes I'll just unlplug and plug them back in for them to register. Other than that I haven't seen a fix for them.
P.S. Klipsch control from the play store seemed to make things worse for me

Thanks for the response! Yeah, I think I am going to try another ROM just to see if it will help, but I have the distinct feeling it might be a hardware issue. I just can't understand why this would all the sudden malfunction right after rooting for me. Maybe just a coincidence. I will definitely respond here though if flashing to a new ROM helps...

I've never tried paranoid but King kang(which has paranoid elements) works fine for the most part. nocturnal'd dirty rom, miui, and cm10 have all worked for me tho. I'm currently on the unofficial cm10.1 4.2 and that's working for me as well, except when I have the headset plugged in while booting.
Final Update....And SUCCESS
So, it appears that it was some sort of ROM specific issue. I flashed CleanROM 5.1 to my phone and "wah-lah"! The headset works perfectly in all modes. I am not sure what it was about Paranoid Android 2.54 that would not allow the headset/mic combo to work with the phone, but I am free of it now I guess. I will miss the interface of PA, but boy does CleanROM run FAST!!! I am in awe of the speed and responsivness. I hope the battery life holds up like PA did for me and I also think that the quick settings on CleanROM basically RULE.

[Q] Skyrocket Low Earpiece Volume Question

My Skyrocket has always had low earpiece volume. It sounds normal until I get in a noisy environment, then I have to press my ear totally against the phone which barely helps. My wife's Galaxy s2 i777 has louder volume and doesn't have this problem. I have tried all the available roms for my device to no avail. Is this normal for this phone, and if so, is there anything I can do to fix this problem? Any app that will work? I love this phone as it meets all my needs except for the volume. Thanks for your help!
edit: i bought this phones 2 months ago from Ebay. I researched it before i bought it, but the main issues others had with the skyrocket was the battery life with LTE. Well, the battery life has been great after custom rom, But the volume is terrible. I first thought i was sold a defective phone but then i found out that others had the same problem, but no solutions. Even all the volume boosts apps that work on other phones (for reasons WAY above my pay grade) do not work on our skyrocket.
...Anybody?... I know this problem of low earpiece volume is common with the skyrocket and has been brought up on many different forums, but I have not found anyone who has found a way to resolve the problem. Any help or direction would be appreciated. This trouble exist with both stock and custom roms.

Well, I have replaced the earspeaker and the problem still persists. To clarify, the speaker is not as low as it was when Beanstalk 4.4 was going thru its growing pains and the volume level dropped after one of the builds a month or so ago. It is just that standing outside with normal outdoor sounds (occasional traffic, birds tweeting, outdoor noises) ihave to hold my ear directly against the speaker. I dont have that problem with my wife's s2 i777
Well, a month has passed with no replies. I have found that the volume level is good when using a headset to answer calls, so I have resorted to trying to be sure to carry earbuds with me. On the rare occasion that I dont have earbuds are the days I dread having this phone. As I us my phone for work, I need it to work as a phone first, and a smartphone secondary. As I stated before, I love the features of this phone, but there has to be a workaround for the volume levels. Maybe I'm just getting old and you young folks dont use the phone to actually speak to each other. Woah! Who let my dad in the room?!!? Anyway, Still looking for help. I am not asking which rom is better than another, but are there any roms that have louder volume levels? I have tried many here including Beanstalk, Dirty Unicorns, Liquid Smooth, Sultans CM 11...

Bean Stalk comes with am app called DSP manager which helps control volumes for bluetooth headsets. Give that a shot. It may just be your headset

The headset isn't the problem. The phone sounds great thru all the headsets that I have tried and thru the loudspeaker. The low volume level is when I am not using the headset and actually have to place my ear up to the phone(earpiece speaker). Its usable in normal areas, such as inside a room, but standing outside with normal background sounds like nature and light road traffic, I can barely hear the caller. I have to press my ear against the phone pretty hard, which usually ends up with accidental button presses and hangups.

Oh i understand, yes I have had that same issue which is why i bought a blue tooth headset.... Not sure if programming can do anything about the internal speaker.

Yeah, I was kinda hoping that maybe somebody discovered something that solve this. I don't know anything about programming, but I was thinking that back when beanstalk had those troubles with extra low volume, it was eventually fixed. And since he was able to boost the volume back to correct levels maybe it could be boosted just a little bit more. Or Since DSP works with bluetooth speakers and headphones and external speakers it seems like it would be easy to make it boost the earpiece volume. But I know that it is NOT easy...it may be impossible. If it was easy then there would have been a fix long ago. But a man can hope, can't he?
