G1 (DREAM) or the Hero? - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Hello
Im new here, so excuse me if i posted in the wrong section.
Im failing at taking a decision between these two
I know that hero has better specs, but ii think that you can mod the G1 more.
is there also alot of hacking and modding aviable for the Hero?
If so, what do you guys think about the hero? Is it really a "hero"?
-Thanks :3

Hero
The Hero has better specs. I personally would get the Hero since it not only has more RAM, but Sense UI on top of that. I do advise you to think about the keyboard on the G1 cause I sure miss my G1 keyboard. I'm about ready to throw my MyTouch out the window if it misspells my words one more time :/

Go for the Hero. I have a G1 right now, its fun to mod it to get better performance. The G1 just doesn't have enough memory. Personally I think its time t-mobile stops selling the G1. The low memory quickly becomes a pain.

thanks for the answers guys, but does the hero have enough modding available?

New HTC phone with WM or Android?

So its almost time for a new phone, I pretty much have it narrowed down to the HTC Fuze or the G1 google phone. I am leaning towards the G1 since its the latest greatest and hopefully the future but at the same time these WM phones have tons of mods and active chefs, and it would stay pretty close to what I am already used to. I am leaning towards the G1 but any input on what you guys have chosen at this crossroad and what you would do differently would be greatly appreciated.
all depends on your personal preferences... since they're based on completely different interfaces and OS...
If i were you... i'd just go to the Dream section and read some of the threads related to whether you should or shouldn't buy one.. usually when a device is out the first few threads discuss it's pricing, problems... and advantages..
i'm not familiar with Android enough to give my input tho.
Hardware-wise, the Fuze is much newer than the G1. It's got more RAM, more ROM, and a higher resolution screen.

Check into the G1 because a G2 has been rumored to be in the works and possibly losed on the public sometime early 2009! Apparently it blows the G1 out of the water and will be 4G compatable!

But then, he would probably have to wait a little bit more because the G3 will be on the works... endless loop really. I would not go with the G1 simply because it is a "test" imho. Google and HTC will try to get as much feedback on bugs (which it has plenty from what I understand). It will definitely get better, but I wouldn't spend that kind of money on a "beta". Just look at what happened to the iPhone owners when the 3G came out... nuff said...
I hope this helps you on your choice...

Getting new phone. Need help choosing.

So I've been a smartphone person for a while and the last good phone I had was the Nokia N91 which broke. I've been using a crappy Samsung slider to make/take calls and send/receive messages.
I'm getting a new phone and have narrowed down my choices to 2.
HTC HD2 (Leo) or the HTC Hero.
Now, I love the HTC Hero but the only thing keeping me is what I've heard about it being very laggy (and ive seen some videos, opening the mail takes at least 5-10 seconds). I have used the Android OS several times at the store and really love it (recently tried the HTC Droid Eric by Verizon).
I have also used Windows Mobile and find it okay, but seem to like Android better. Also, HTC Hero will NOT get 3G in the US...
I'm looking at the HD2 because it packs a lot of horsepower... 1Ghz is pretty dang nice, and from the videos I've seen lag does not exist AT ALL.
So now I have this dilemma... should I buy the HD2 or Hero. I guess it comes down to whether or not WinMo is better than Android (FOR ME. Please don't start a android vs winmo flame war).
What do you guys think?
P.S. I need to buy an unlocked GSM. No other options. Will probably get it from Middle East/Europe. Availability in a certain region is not an issue for me.
Welcome to HTC XDA! We highly recommend HTC HD2 top of the line PPC!! See the LEO section for the specs, answers & info...
I am personally waiting for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 which runs android, a very high resolution, and the snapdragon processor, in my opinion it is superior to the hd2 and the hero
Thanks galaxys for the warm welcome.
I'm not sure what you mean by PPC, but why exactly is it that you recommend it? The superior hardware?
and thanks jad for the response... I have considered the X10 and think its pretty cool but I'm not willing to wait and need a new phone NOW
PPC means Pocket PC. Anything that runs Windows Mobile is a pocket PC. It's not a term you see much nowadays.
The HD2 is probably the best PPC/WM device out there at the moment. As far as I'm aware (others please correct me if I'm wrong) the Eris is the Hero in another casing spcifically for Verizon. If only the Leo ran Android....
Ah okay thanks TheBrit
Yes you are correct about the Eris. Just different case.
Also, I've really fallen in love with android... so I guess I'll go for the Hero.
There's also the Samsung Moment that runs Android and has a physical keyboard.

He said Hero not Leo

hey guys, new here and wanted to ask your opinions

ok so here's the thing, i have an upgrade on sprint and am deciding between the touch pro 2, the hero and the samsung moment. the only reason i really like the hero is because of sense. but if if someone here knows how to get sense on the moment i would snap it up immediately.
however the touch pro 2 looks amazing with the big screen and that awesome keyboard. not to mention i looked around on the forums last couple of days and have seen all the crazy stuff for windows mobile with cooked roms and stuff. not to mention u guys have android on WM so yeah.
i'm coming from a pre, and was part of the first homebrewers so i doubt i'll have to much trouble with modding or rooting the WM or android phones. i dealt with alot of coding with the pre and it was a bit of a pain but enlightening.
so i'm just wondering what u TP2 and Hero users have to say. and if anybody can answer about getting sense ui on the moment that would be great.
tl;dr what should i get Hero, TP2 or Moment.

My advice...
Drop the Moment...
Go with a TP2. They are working on porting Android for this and will not be long before you can see a port with Sense on the TP2 (if there isn't one already).
Hope this helps.
so any other responses? or opinions.
Go for the TP2 which as mentioned has many cool stuff & more in development. Very reliable with a nice screen!
But if U want the cool Android stuff now, then of course it's the Hero...
so about the TP2 does it run sense like the hd2 or touchflo? and where do i go to get all the cool stuff for it, anywhere specific.

HTC Hero or Palm Pre?

I have the option of buying either, a htc hero or a palm pre.
The problem i have with the hero is because android moves so fast (the hero is already old) developers may move onto other things, which is not good for the long term. Palm has a great community of homebrew, hacks and the pre already has 5000 apps atm on preware, so your opinions?

Coming from an unbias view I would have to say the Hero. Based on development here.
HOWEVER, from what I have seen of the Pre, you are able to hack it to install .deb files I think. That really makes what the Pre is capable of limitless.

Hmmm... deb files? thats pretty cool i guess, but your first reaction was the hero, so i think I'll get one of those. Thanks for the info
I had the pre before my hero... I made a couple of crappy videos explaining why I think my hero is better than my pre was!

HTC hero, anygood?

Heyy everbody,
at the moment i have a htc Pharos, and im looking for an upgrade. Ive seen a few HTC Hero's on ebay for around $450 and that fits into my budget, so i was wondering if Hero's are any good? Also i have Bluetooth activesync setup on my Pharos and it works great with passthrough, but is there a way to set up the same thing on a android. btw i dont have wifi, so thats not really an option.
The hero is a good phone, but its a little out dated. If you want android, get a desire, legend, nexus 1. If you want to stay on winmo, get an HD2, they are only ~$300 on ebay right now

Pretty spot on. Hero is outdated a bit...
Thanks, ive been looking at android phones as they are in my opinion much better than winmo. The legend seems like a good phone for the price but ive heard its a bit outdated, but then again if i buy a HD2 and can i put android on it?

The Legend is the Hero's replacement. I own a Hero, and I can say that it's definitely not a "new" phone for mid-2010. Yes, it's nice, and the development community is active (90% functional Froyo? I'll take it!), but its features have been superseded a million times by high-end Snapdragon+WVGA phones. If you like the Hero, then take a look at the Legend instead - it has slightly (very slightly) better hardware plus a different/better version of Sense UI that includes some widgets and features not found in the Hero's.
Like some others have said, the hardware is outdated and by the end of this year with the 1.5Ghz Snapdragons coming out, the Hero will be long forgotten but still sellers on eBay will try to get $400 for it Personally I like the Hero design but looking at the lifespan, I'd say the Hero should be worth $200 max at this point due to the RAM, CPU, and display limitations.
You can always get an HD2, put android on it, but it will never be like owning a native Android phone. I know, from experience. But, I would suggest the Desire or Nexus One. I personally have a Nexus and LOVE it
