Hi all. This is my first ever new thread so go easy on me. A while back we had a think-tank to make GoogleMaps work for navigation outside of the US. I figured if that was allowed then this request should be...
Skype makes SkypeMobile for android but it only works on Verizon. I figure there is no reason the smart people here can't mod the APK or phone ID to force it to work on my T-Mobile G1 (even if only over WiFi).
Is anyone up to the challenge?
-Sorry if this has been discussed, but I did try searching first and only found links to an old Skype Lite, which is not the same as Skype Mobile from Skype.
As far as I'm aware, even the official skype app on android uses minutes to call a cheaper number to call your skype contacts cheaply. If I'm not mistaken, on the verizon app there's no way to make data/wifi only calls. Fring's better for that
Skype Beta is available for T-Mobile Android devices. it does call out to a number to make the skype calls, but it calls out to the same number every time. THE SAME NUMBER EVERY TIME.

You can also do something similar with Google Voice's call out feature, I believe it's option 2 from within the automated menu to make an outbound call. Ofcourse you would need to add it to your 5 Faves first.
By the way, I can't remember if Skype's number is a 1-800/1-877 number or not, but T-Mobile prohibits those from My-Faves.
Technically, they frown upon you adding GV's number as well, but I don't know if they've figured out a way to track that yet.

T-mobile no longer has myFaves and they found out people were setting the Voice number as a fave and it still costs now.
The only way you have myFaves with the G1 is if it's an old plan it's not available now.

Skype on Android is exclusive to Verizon. You can install the apps marketaccess or my market and change your carrier settings in there to make google think you are on Verizon for you to see the skype app in the market. I am not sure that it will actually work if you download and install it though.
I was disappointed by this too (coming from WinMo), but I have figured out how to use sipdroid in conjunction with google voice to get free voip calls to the US and Canada (I had a gizmo5 account which is no longer open for registration, but you can choose from a number of sip providers). Another option that looks interesting, but will not work for calls to non android/iphone phones (yet anyway) is a new vonage/facebook app which gives free voip to your facebook contacts. i haven't tried that one out yet though...

Don't people say there is a loud echo when they speak with you on skype?
Everyone i spoke with said they hear themselves and very loud echo.
you can get skype if you use market enabler. However, it has not been said to be a good app. The Skype to landline calls still use minutes etc.
Hey guys I havent been able to find anything current as if this was possible on android device.. I have JB IP4 and im using google voice sms through bitesms as my native app using the sms google voice extension. The way it works is that when the google voice app sends a push notification on the phone the google voice sms extension catches the push notification and sends it through bitesms as a normal sms. That way I was able to ditch the unlimited sms plan from ATT. Is something like that possible on android? Thats huge for me since 20 bucks a months is a damn ripoff. And i do lots and lots of txting lol. Thanks for any info =)
I've been an SMS GV Extensions user since it launched and finally bought an Android phone last week.
I took it for granted that Android would either do this already or be able to do this more easily (iOS required a jailbreak), but I instead find that you can only integrate incoming messages with the native Android messaging app and there doesn't seem to be a solution even with rooting your phone. This is disappointing, to say the least.
The fact that the Android GV app has an option in integrate inbound messages with the native messaging application but not outbound implies that is is a deliberate decision on Google's part because it is an obvious feature that is only half implemented. It is probably less a concern with cutting into the carriers' SMS revenue and more to do with constraining use of the service (Google has taken actions to curb heavy use in the past). If it integrated seemlessly, people would use it more.
This is something Google is just going to have to get over if they hope to remain competitive. There is some hope in that the new iMessaging that integrates with text messaging on iOS will put competitive pressure on them to do something similar with Android.
I will be first in line!

I have not used this personally, and am in no way associated with the developer, but I found this app when searching for this exact functionality today. My Nexus S is currently integrated with GV on Sprint, so I have no way of actually testing whether this works or not, but if it does, its definitely worth $0.99!
I've been contemplating a switch to Verizon because of Sprint's slow network speeds, and would do so if I could have this functionality. If anyone has tried it, please provide feedback.

I just tried that app about 20 minutes ago. It shows promise. If you compose a message using the native SMS app it will send via Google Voice.
However, it doesn't integrate incoming messages. If you use GV's built in text forwarding, messages will come from your contact's alias (406, 973, etc) number. Also, you won't see messages you've sent using the Google Voice app or website in the native client.
I refunded it but I'll definitely buy again after improvements are made.

just search for mdrtools and u will find it.
This works, I am using my tablet as a speakerphone, plus sending and recieving text messages.

Thanks for the link but I'm having trouble getting it to work. Calls come into the tablet, I'm able to answer them but the connection doesn't seem to complete. While the tablet says it has connected, the dialing phone continues to ring and eventually goes to Google voicemail. Anyone have any luck getting this to work? I'm on Vegan 5.1.1

This is because you are only setting up a free account with CallCentric. You can only talk to other CallCentric users for free over the SIP connection. Unless you are going to purchase time there this will be of limited use for voice calls.
Texting however is another matter. This is working QUITE nicely for that. Texting on my Gtab....didn't think I would see that.
My only question is if sending texts counts as usage on the IPkall account. If it doesn't I will have to make a point of actually calling the number once a month to keep it active.

I was under the impression from the original write-up that calling and texting were completely free using this method.

I could get a call to make the tab ring but no voice so I went looking at the websites...
Right off CallCentric's page per the link:
"IP Freedom does not allow you to call traditional landline and mobile phones. If you like the idea of the Callcentric IP Freedom plan, but need to make calls to traditional phones please take a look at our Pay Per Call plan."
I may be missing something, but I assume that is the issue. I am not sure why they have us install the dialer software since you can dial through CSip.

Well, I stand corrected. I messed with it a little more and I am able to get incoming calls.
The outgoing cannot be made directly. You have to call Google Voice and have it place the call/call you back. The directions have us installing an old version of Voice which I am not keen on.
Gonna play with it some more.
Tablet as Phone
Ok, I can text successfully to & from the tab and I can take incoming calls.
Not having any luck making outgoing calls. Google Voice Callback is not seeming to intercept the outgoing call to have Google voice place it and call my back so CallCentric is denying the call since it is not to one of their clients. Not sure what the problem is here.
Further I can't use Dialerone at all. Every time I try to use it to place an outgoing call it gives the famous android.process.acore error. I reviewed my complete contact list & cleared out entries causing prior problems and cleared my contact storage, but it didn't seem to make a difference.
Anyone here having luck with this?

I use Skype to make calls. It works pretty well. I don't receive calls with it because I don't pay extra for a phone number but I do have a Skype acct to make calls to land lines.
On skype the microphone works pretty well while it sits in my lap.
I have the C&C Froyo setup on my gTab.
Oh. I should have mentioned that I have not been able to use Skype video calling. At some point I'm pretty sure that will be working but I'm been following other threads for now and I find 99% of my calls are not video anyway. My laptop works better for that anyway because of how I can set in on the counter.
GrooveIP works directly with your Google Voice number - no need to redirect to another system. GrooveIP is not free, but for a few dollars,it gives you the ability to make and receive calls. Paired with the Google Voice app, you have voicemail and SMS all on your gTablet.
I've been happy with Skype as well.I actually think Skype works better with the mic compared to GrooveIP, although both do work well. Of course, with Skype, you have to have SkypeIn, SkypeOut subscriptions, or Skype credit to make calls to landlines.

I can make video calls on skype. Video quite bad, but it works. Im on TNT Lite 4.4
You need the latest skype, and have to enable video in the settings.
For those of us on sprint google voice is exceptionally awesome. I have google voice on my gtab combined with my sprint cell number and I am able to make and recieve text messages. It's pretty awesome. I've been told using gooveip works very well with it but I haven't bought it just yet. Right now I just don't see the need for it.

You are correct this is up to date and all of the links should be working. I continue to update my thread to make sure everything still works. I just ported my moms old land line number that she has had for like 20 years over to Google voice and then did this same setup for her so she can still have her land line number and a "home phone" with out having to pay a dime extra for it.
Hi, I'm looking for an app that would allow me to use my secondary Google Voice number .. I hope this question is in the right place.
I searched Google and found only few posts where something like this was asked and no real answers there.
I am currently using GVoice with Sprint integration so the android Google voice app is being used by my sprint number and that takes the option of even signing out of the app away. What I need is a second app to let me sign in with my other Google Voice account and able to text and maybe make calls as well? but mostly I need it for the SMS.
I believe I can use grooveIP to make and receive VoIP calls with Gvoice.. but GrooveIP doesn't have SMS.
I know there are other options for SMS such as Pinger, TextMe, TextPlus and many more and I did try those three but none of them as good as Google voice and one reason is they don't give permanent number they will delete it if not used for 30 days and that's a problem for me.. also they don't save history but only for few days or weeks where with Gvoice my history is there however long I want to keep it.
I hope I made what I'm looking for clear

Recently bought N5 (play store), also bought activation kit from T-Mobile for the $30/month unlimited data prepaid plan. Works great. Was my intention to use GrooveIP to make VOIP calls using the data only and never touch the 100 mins portion of the plan. Then I hear about Google dropping the XMPP support in Google Voice. While I understand that this isn't supposed to happen until May of 2014, my question is this. Are there any alternatives that will allow me to make Data only VOIP calls on my N5?

Im not going to even begin to worry for about 4 months. Gotta give Google some time to possibly introduce a Hangouts voice calling alternative. If they don't, then I guess I am going to have to switch to Straight Talk. It only ends up being 6 dollars more a month than the Tmobile plan when you buy 6 month cards off Amazon and as an added bonus you dont have to worry about minutes anymore and you get much better coverage. Only major negative is your data is cut in half.
Get a s4 with wifi calling.
The stock rom allows you to make "Internet" (SIP) calls or you could install an app like CSipSimple. Either way, just find a SIP provider you like.

There are tons of them out there. Just search for "sip provider" or "voip provider". The right one for you will depend a lot on what country you're in, what your calling patterns are, how many minutes you expect to use, etc.
In the US, callentric, broadvoice, voip.ms, vitelity are just a few.
I think OP will have to wait for google to change their api. I am kinda worried too using OBI100 at my office.

Gateways such as pbxes and Sipsorcery are not using XMPP, so they should work after XMPP is shut off.

"If you are using OBI, GrooveIP, csipsimple via PBXes, or your own * box etc., they will cease to function as they use Asterisk PBX modules on the server end to translate XMPP (Jabber) in to SIP protocols."
Therefore, according to him, PBX is no longer possible?

My misake. You're correct, PBXes.org will no longer work because, yes, they use XMPP.

Sipsourcery does not use XMPP, but rather HTTP, so they should continue to work.

I have used the following process even before I discovered GrooveIP was going to stop working on May 15 because of Google dropping support for XMPP.
Setup a free SIP account on (say) www.callcentric.com and select a DID.
Use the Internet Phone setting on the N5 to create a SIP account to your Callcentric Number.
Go to Google Voice on a desktop and route your GV number to that DID. You will have to verify the number by installing a SIP client either on the desktop or set it up on your N5.
Download and install Google Voice Callback (available free at the Amazon app store).
Then when you want to make a call over data (WiFi or 3G) call as usual, let GV Callback intercept the call and do a callback. It should callback your Google Voice number which will be forwarded to your Callcentric number and ring on your cell. When you answer Google Voice will call and connect you to the original number.
Similarly if people call your GV number it should ring your cell over the SIP connection to Callcentric.
No airtime minutes should be consumed in this process.

Why are you stressing that we own a Nexus 5? I do not think that this is supported in regular JB systems? Would you mind writing a small tutorial and iron out the fine details you are outlining here?

First of all this is a N5 forum which is why I assume that users will be using the N5. In fact this process works for the GN and Nexus S (and Nexus 4) but I can't vouch for non GED devices since I don't have any.
To expand a little (and as they say in maths texts, the rest is left an an exercise for the reader).
I have used the following process even before I discovered GrooveIP was going to stop working on May 15 because of Google dropping support for XMPP.
Setup a free SIP account on (say) www.callcentric.com and select a DID.. That means go www.callcentric.com and register an account. Then choose their free DID plan and select a number in one of the New York area codes they provide. I think 845 is one of them; It really doesn't matter what number you choose - just remember it.
Use the Internet Phone setting on the N5 to create a SIP account to your Callcentric Number. This is Phone/Settings/Call Settings/Accounts.
Setup a SIP account using the username 1777nnnnnnn which is assigned to your new account, password as you provided and server callcentri.com
Go to Google Voice on a desktop and route your GV number to that DID. You will have to verify the number by installing a SIP client either on the desktop or set it up on your N5.
Confirm that you can receive calls on this number in that your account [email protected] is receiving calls. Confirm that by calling you (e.g.) 845 number and make sure it rings on your phone. This will be a SIP call and not use any data.
Go to Google Voice and set the (854) number as a number for GV to forward calls. GV will then ask you to confirm that number by calling it and asking you to enter a 2 digit number into the called phone. You will need to make sure you can receive call on your cell on that number.
If you are successful, then your new number (callcentric) will not ring on your cell.
Download and install Google Voice Callback (available free at the Amazon app store). This app is not available at the Play Store since apparently it violates some rule Google has about apps but Amazon host it fine, The author is Xinlu,
What Google Voice Callback does is, it will intercept a regular call on your cellphone and ask if you want to use GV Callback. You do. The call will then be hung up and Google will now call your back on your (845) number (over the Internet) and when you pick up, it will present you will the ringing tone to the originally called number. When you connect you are now making an Internet call rather than using your TMO minutes,
Similarly if people call your GV number it should ring your cell over the SIP connection to Callcentric because you have forwarded all your calls to GV to your SIP phne.
No airtime minutes should be consumed in this process.
FYI if you are already a magicJack user, that is also a decent alternative. If you already use magicjack for your home line, you can download the app and make free calls to North America via wifi/data etc. You can get a new free number and route calls to your google voice number to your magicjack number. Unfortunately I'm not sure you can integrate your outgoing magicjack calls via google voice.
The quality of voip calls via magicjack is pretty decent over wifi and LTE from my experience. However if you're stuck in an area with 3G data, your call quality may vary. I have been using the app to make free calls on Nexus 7 tablet via Tmo data plan and it works well...

I suspect that's going to break also with the loss of XMPP support. To quote their site
The Google Voice Gateway service will be discontinued on May 15, 2014, due to policy and technology changes being implemented by Google. Please see this blog posting for more details and the SIP Providers forum to discuss SIP provider alternatives. Thank you for your support in helping to make this service excellent since November 2011.
What I plan to do is use Google Voice callback and a free SIP provider like Callcentric. It's a bit more fiddly but I think it does not rely on XMPP support and you can still make free calls using data.
